@JohnNathanShopper at girst yet but quickly descidrf be another class. Though the guy that saw the final desgin saw it upside down and the modelers rolled with it
@@paulrasmussen8953 yes, so I guess it is better better designed than the Centaur or Yeager, but it’s still the “hatchback version” of the Enterprise as Venom Geek says about the Nebula. The success of Lower Decks has really shone a light on the hard-working second-string ships of the Federation, but the Miranda really did it first by getting blasted to hell again and again in DS9
The Miranda Class has been my favorite design every since I first saw STII in the theater as a kid. Something about the shared components with the Constitution Class while being being more compact and having greater interior space than the heavy cruiser. As a kid I was always hoping for a ST show based on a Miranda, alas.
I've always liked the design, sharing aesthetics and components with the Constitution. Even though I like the Miranda in the form we've always seen her in, she looks even better in the TOS style. I also like her spiritual successor in the Nebula class, it makes Starfleet feel more dynamic. I often wonder how far the production design process got before she got underslung nacelles. At some point in the concept she still had the nacelles on top and the torpedo pod below, but at some point a production diagram or concept art was handed over upside down. It's hard to imagine the decks at the back of the saucer being on the belly of the vessel, that part had to have come later. My personal favourite Federation Ships are the Akira and the Parliament Class from Lower Decks. My favourite Non-Federation ships are Vor'cha and the Tonga Class from the Dominion Wars game.
While I agree with your video I am a HUGE fan of this design! I am older and was an adolescent when STWOK came out and was thrilled beyond belief that there were new designs as I was in ST3. Miranda will always have a special place in my heart.
It definitely has a lot of fans, and is one of my favorites. But I think a lot of people tend to focus on the ships twilight years in tng and ds9 when it was a weaker class that was kinda a punching bag.
Somewhere in the land of UA-cam there's a video in which a guy modeled both the Mirandas and the Constitutions, to discover that the Mirandas were 18% bigger than the Constitutions. They just look smaller because they have shorter pylons and no neck. Add to that the comment by Spock just before the Mutara battle that the Defiant couldstill outrun and outgun the Enterprise, and we can reasonably draw aome interestign conclusions about the class. I still prefer the Constitutions, but the Mirandas are my second favorite ships in the franchise.
ECHenry made the video I believe, I tend to assume starfleet ship classifications describe a ships role more than size. Helps explain the size discrepancy between the two in my mind.
the only thing that really bugged me about the design is just how close the photon torpedoes come to hitting the bridge...better not fire them while quickly moving the ship upwards. 💀
I agree, the memes are funny, but the DS9 space battles we see are visually hamstrung by 90s TV budgeting. It’s clear the CGI model for the Miranda was convenient to blow up real good. Excelsiors, Nebulas, and Galaxy classes got bashed up just as much.
I wouldn't call it underappreciated. It was never meant to be a Hero ship, but always a ship in the background or supplementary to the Hero ships in the series. I personally though of it as one of the most versatile designs in the fleet. Assuming it phased in as the Soyuz phased out, it's adaptable platform allowed it to take on SO many roles in Starfleet. Different weapons and sensor pods, freight, defense, it was a Jack of all Trades. Yes, I know that means it was a Master of None, but rarely do we see situations where a Master of one trade works well in the long term versus a Jack of all Trades for the missions Starfleet sends them on. A ship class that was in service for that many decades (granted with upgrades and overhauls) was definitely not underappreciated by her Captains or crews. There was a Saratoga previous to Sisko's ship, it was disabled by the Whale Probe near the Klingon border in Star Trek IV.
Excelsior began service as a battleship (whatever the starfleet equivalent is) but as time moved on it filled in as first a heavy cruiser then supplanted the Miranda as a light cruiser, but that time the Miranda had herself begun filling in other roles. Excelsior didn’t really replace Miranda, more like filled in a niche that the Miranda was no longer suitable for.
Why did you have the chatbox thingy switched off for the premiere? What's the point of a premiere if you do that? It's literally the only difference between a live premiere and just releasing the video, and you disabled it, what's the point?
I just love how the Miranda class went from haphazard kitbash to the ubiquitous backbone of Starfleet task forces in DS9.
It was never a hapharzard kitnash. She was a fully deisgned ship
Didn’t they have to rework the design last-minute for Wrath if Khan? The Reliant was supposed to be another Constitution class.

@JohnNathanShopper yup. The three most prolific class were oberth, miranda amd excelsior

For the longest time the Miranda Class was my favorite Starfleet class, even over the Excelsior class.

I say she looks worse in tos style

@@starshipreviews that’s because they’re younger than us Gen Xers lol
@jeffhallam2004 this is true as well
The Miranda class is my FAVOURITE class, just beating out the refit Connie......
Miranda was a great design from the start. My fourth favourite class. Nebula, Steamrunner, Odyssey, Miranda, Akira....
I envy people who can make clear choices about their favorite classes
love your reviews man. your channel is hugely underrated. keep it up!
Glad you like the videos

It's been a perineal background ship it really should be a hero ship for at least one episode.
I agree completely

The coupé to the Constitution class sedan.
I like that
and it is a sexy ship
Semi meme. It is notewirthy that she was so useful. But the dw should it was time to design a true replacement
It's a great ship!
I agree
my faverite ship is the excelciorII

The it was cool at age 11 when WOK was new. Still think it’s cool now.
Definitely still cool
Did the Excelsior replace the Miranda as the workhorse of Starfleet?
It seemed to be an all-purpose ship🖖
Excelsior began service as a battleship (whatever the starfleet equivalent is) but as time moved on it filled in as first a heavy cruiser then supplanted the Miranda as a light cruiser, but that time the Miranda had herself begun filling in other roles. @Belzediel will do, very much figuring this out on the spot here
@@starshipreviews That's fair. I probably put that a little harshly, if so, my bad. :-)
