    Capture One gives you an amazing amount of control when converting your images to black and white. Rather than just de-saturating the image, Capture One gives you access to color sensitivity sliders which allows you to control the light and dark areas of the image by their original color regions. Capture One also gives you access to split toning. This allows you to apply tonal colors to both the highlights and shadows much like you have in analog printing processes.

    Ted, thanks for another CaptureOne tutorial. This one is right down my alley. I only see muted colors, so my workflow includes converting the raw image to black and white. But so far I’ve only used the saturation slider in the exposure tab. I’m going to give a go at working with the bw palette in the color tab. Keep up the good work!

    In addition to what he says here, you can also use the saturation slider and white balance . All the color editing tools still work. I do a lot of black and white images, much of it with skin tones. The red slider is great for minimizing blemishes. The yellow slider can be used to add depth to the skin. A common setting that I use is 35 for both red and yellow , and it gives me a nice glowing skin. By increasing the saturation of the image you get better color separation and therefore better control over the different individual colors. Also, I would advise not moving a slider all the way to the left or right, strange things can start to happen at edges when the sliders get too far away from zero

    🤔 makes sense to use colors to change effects in the capture. When I use my yellow filter with black and white film it enhances skin tones and red my red filter deepens tones like the sky, etc. Great video!

    I love black and white. Your example of changing the image with the sliders for each separate colour.
    When I studied black and white with film years ago, we used colour filters on the end of the lens. Darken skies, use red or yellow. Same concept. Digital cameras do have the option of shooting in monochrome,so anyone doing this, have to remember to change the camera back to colour and remove filters in the lens. Or use the software
    As you mentioned, different toners for the darkroom. It’s a craft. You can really create some amazing moods and dramatic images.

    Hi there,
    I have used the b&w setting from time to time, (used this process all the time in Camera Raw, when using Adobe) but generally in the Xpro2 I prefer to use the Fuji b&w presets as a basis. I can then work on dynamic range, dropping the highlights boosting the shadows, and adding some clarity...
    I at time bring the brightness down and boost the shadows to get a really gritty b&w look reminiscent of say grade 4 paper..
    For the most part Acros with a R filter gives a great starting point...

    Very well done, Ted. Thanks for these! But wait, There's More!! Buy now and...
    Okay, never mind. As Ted mentioned, your RAW file still contains colour information and you can use the sliders in the Black & White tab to adjust the 6 different colour channels. That's great, but what if you want More control? Go to the Colour Editor tab and under Basic you know have 8 channels and beyond that you have the Colour Picker tool. You can't see the colours, but the information is still there. You want the leaves in your background to be lighter or darker? Use the Colour Picker tool and click on the (gray tone) of the leaves and now start adjusting the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders. You're still only affecting the luminance of the gray tones, but you have more control. Not specific enough for you? Go to the Advanced Colour Editor and use the Colour Picker tool. Now you pick a sample point but you can further define the colour tone you want to change. And if you're not Exactly sure what tones you're working with, check the View Selected Colour Range box. The rest of the image remains grayscale, but the colour(s) you've selected now show up as colour... until you uncheck the box. This, in and of itself) isn't selective colour (where a black and white image has red roses, for example); this is just showing you want tones you're going to be adjusting. Use the Colour Picker and select a different gray area and get new colour tones to adjust.
    Plus, rather than using the Split-Tone sliders, you can use the Colour Balance tool in the same way, except you have more control over the Hue, Saturation and Lightness of the shadow, midtone and highlight regions of your image. One thing C1 does VERY well is custom colour control, even when you can't see the colours.
    Mike.

  • @SauravDasGuptaIN
    @SauravDasGuptaIN 4 роки тому +1

    Hi Ted - There is something about monochrome cameras that I was thinking of late and since you are in the topic of B/W conversion, I feel its an opportunity to ask.
    Over a few years, there have been a couple of monochrome cameras and even some people got their's converted. Now with the coming of M10 monochrome, a lot of us are stoked again (forgetting about the purchasing power for a while).. However -
    While I understand there are some great advantages of the missing RGB filter array viz.
    - 1 stop additional light to the sensor,
    - no sharpness loss from RGB layer, and
    - no computation needed by image processor to extrapolate the missing color info.
    But I see this disadvantage too - As you explained the use of sliders in capture one to manipulate the luminosity of each color to get the intended look, I have been using lightroom for the same. I cannot think of B/W conversion in any other way. Unfortunately, this feature goes missing in a true monochrome image as the image program doesn't have the colors to work on.
    I understand we can use certain color filters (red/yellow etc.) like old film days, but still, I am not sure how much it helps for all the colors as we do in the post now. Also, there will be a loss of some light in using a filter anyway.
    You see I am not very experienced in analog, so, in your personal experience do you thing this disadvantage outweighs the advantages listed? I would like to hear your thoughts on how you feel about this and if any workaround is available.
    The earlier maestros have some beautiful BW works, but I am not quite sure how to achieve that in modern monochrome cameras.
    Regards

    • @theartofphotography
      @theartofphotography  4 роки тому +3

      I've shot a lot with the PhaseOne Achromatic which is monochrome as well as full spectrum. I'm sure the M10 is fabulous, but not in my budget. I think for monochrome digital, converting an older camera and going full spectrum will give you a lot to experiment with. I prefer color conversions as I'm showing here, but there's some cool stuff you get with full spectrum monochrome. I was getting up to 12,800 with no noise at all - Phase is also a medium format sensor… I enjoy using filters to control the IR spectrum more than I do sensitivity. Not sure I'm answering your question, but unless you really love the Monochrome M10, its way outside most budgets.

    • @SauravDasGuptaIN
      @SauravDasGuptaIN 4 роки тому

      @@theartofphotography Thanks for the response Ted. I was not specifically taking about the M10 as the price is beyond reach for me as well..but monochrome cameras in general.
      Some people have converted their existing cameras by removing the RGB filter, fuji xpros, sony a7 series etc.
      I was looking for an insight on a the B/W output from a true monochrome camera/with the RGB filter removed + (say) a red filter vs an equivalent camera with color output + converted in post as you explained.
      Do you thing the output from a color camera converted in post to B/W can outweigh the advantages (as I mentioned in the first comment) of an equivalent monochrome camera with color filters? Hope I am making sense to you.. trying but not sure :)
      On another note, if and when I get back to the US I will try the phase one achromatic once for sure. Right now I don't have the funds and availability

    The sad thing is that the newer the sensor, the harder it is to get a natural "non-digital" -looking black and white image from a raw file.. For me this has led to just accepting that color is the way to go forward.. Makes me angry and sad, but I´ll guess one of these days I will just have to go back to Tri-X and the analog darkroom.
