    Good video, thanks for making it.
    You've probably covered this in other videos. Just in case...
    A useful temporary-reset trick with individual sliders: Move the pointer over a slider's name. Left-click and hold the mouse button down. The slider resets to its default position. Let up on the mouse button and the slider goes back to where you last set it.
    The mouse wheel can be used with sliders. Hover over a slider to give it the "focus" first, then roll the wheel.
    Once in a while you might have to click the slider to put the focus there.
    The wheel also works with curves. Hover the mouse over a point on the curve so that orange cross-hairs appear. Roll the mouse wheel for upward/downward movement. Hold down Shift and roll the wheel for leftward/rightward movement.
    The wheel also works to move the various sliders around in the advanced color-balance tool.
    These "minor" UI enhancements are great. They can help reduce hand fatigue a lot during long editing sessions.

    I just started testing Capture One a few weeks ago and I'm editing a few shoots I've done with my new Fuji. I've been using Lightroom since the Beta back in '06, and I find that Capture One is just such a powerful editing program. There are things I need to get used to, but I see great things ahead using the software. I'm quite excited to learn to unlock its true potential.

    If I want to change contrast using curves, I prefer using the Luma curve rather than the RGB curves as that does not affect the saturation

      Same, I like using a mix of the two, RGB for setting black and white points and luminosity for more contrast control

    Ive been a long time C1 and i started with the express version and got my feet wet then went to the pro version when i watched videos on the the benefits of the extended features...when they added luma curves i knew for sure that it was worth my time to really learn the many different ways you can adopt this software to any work flow. Thanks Ted for all your unbiased views on this program. Cheers.

    Quick tip for adjusting sliders: if you hold Option/Alt when moving them, you'll have a finer degree of control. This is especially handy for adjusting Rotation, which can be rather too sensitive otherwise.
    Also, I think it's important to note that according to a couple of Phase One webinars, the Contrast slider is actually a blend of RGB and Luminance contrast adjustment. If you just use the RGB curve to increase contrast, you'll also increase saturation quite a lot more than using the Contrast slider. Conversely, if you use the Luminance curve you won't affect saturation at all.
    You can of course replicate the effects of the Contrast slider using Curves, but it's a handy quick fix imo, and offers a nice default balance. The same applies to the Brightness slider - it's essentially a mid-point adjustment on both the RGB and Luminance curves.

    Cool tips. I never use the toolbar in Capture One. CTRL-SHIFT-C and V copies and pastes all settings. To apply only one tool setting, say white balance, to a bunch of images, select the source image as primary, shift-select the others, and then CTRL-SHIFT click the double arrow icon in that tool panel.

    Thanks Ted. I've been trying Capture One for a few months now (thanks to subscription pricing) and have been blown away by the quality of the adjustments. Images just look better when processed in C1 compared to Lightroom and I feel like I have more control. My only real hang ups with it are trying to make it fit into my workflow. I do a lot of composites and the Photoshop integration with LR makes that impressively easy with 'open as layers in Photoshop'. Also, LR's ability to stitch panoramas and HDR is something I miss in C1.
    I'm still trying to understand where my files are in a session-based workflow and where C1 keeps the edit data... I know you briefly touched on it recently, but if you could speak more to how you use Capture One with Lightroom, I'm sure many of us would love to know!

    As you might know, double klick on a slider itself sets it to default. If you want to see the effect of only one parameter in a tool set (like saturation in the exposure tool) just click and hold the name of the slider.

    Capture One really need a Slider (before after edit) and a Toggle button (before after edit) that is comfortable other than the ALT + Mouse on the icon. It is useful if you want to see how a single tab affects something, but terrible when you work on the entire image.
    Please let them know that this is an improvement that has to be done.

  • @alexanderivanoff
    @alexanderivanoff 4 роки тому

    The brightness slider in C1 only affect the mid-tones. No need of complicated and confusing explanations.
    "Popping an image" is a very complicated topic, which starts with the shooting and involving light (direction and qualities), lens characteristics - how it drops off the contrast right behind the focus plane, etc (even sensor size plays a role here), background separation (light and defocus), then specific post-processing techniques, and deep understanding of colour and the ability to create decent contrasts. There is also an important thing, called "inherent luminosity", which plays a vital role how the eyes are perceiving colour, etc.
    Besides explaining some basic controls in C1, this video has little to do with "popping an image" actually.

    • @q5sys
      @q5sys 4 роки тому

      They kinda do actually... Ctrl-Z is undo, Crtl-Y is redo, and Crtl-R is reset to original. You can reassign these in the keyboard short cuts if you want. I have them rekeyed and linked with my midi sequencer so I can flip back and forth between changes quickly.

    You seem to be moving away from the philosophy, theory and history of photography that was a staple on this channel and more into reviews of hardware and software. Don't know if this is really a good thing. I went back to see your episodes on Harold Feinstein and then to the Harold Feinstein trust and saw that his videos only have 220 subscribers. Why are so many interested in how to use Capture One or read up on gear reviews and have so little interest in learning about what makes a great photo? Is it because it's really easy to sit and manipulate photos or read about gear and actually very very difficult to take a memorable photo that is full of emotion and impact on the viewer. If I have a photo that needs significant manipulation, I know that I did not do my job in the first place.
