There's a reason why SM Entertainment get so much praise for their groups it's called the PowerHouse vocal company. The history of the groups of how they debuted is really simple. The icons and legends of kpop H.O.T shinhwa . Fly to the sky are the first generation. TVXQ. Super junior. Shinee. Second generation. EXO. NCT units are 3th generation. Super m and Wayv all right after. Now we have the two new groups NCT wish Japanese unit. RllZE
Lucifer is one of the most iconic kpop songs together with Mirotic (TVXQ), Sorry Sorry (Super Junior), Gee Gee (Girls Generation), Fantastic Baby (Bigbang) & Growl (EXO). All these songs shaped Kpop music as it is now.
Also, Jonghyun really did hold that note that long in live shows. His vocal power was INCREDIBLE. (Dearly missed, never forgotten)

SHINee debuted in 2008 which makes them 2nd gen and they are a previously 5 member group, currently 4 member group as Jonghyun passed away in 2017, he is dearly missed and SHINee will forever be remembered as 5 ❤

Songs to check out next would be their most recent songs Hard, Don't Call Me, Atlantis (these unfortunately don't have Jonghyun in them) and some of their older stuff like Married to the Music, Sherlock, View, Replay (these do have Jonghyun).
All the members do have solo content which is all incredible but obviously you'll react to those later down the line.
In SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
Onew (pronounced Oh-New in English or On-New with a Korean accent) is the leader and he is the one with the vest with the fur on the back, Jonghyun is the one with the backless vest with the crazy high note, Key has the side of his head shaved, Minho is the tallest one who is the rapper with the short hair and Taemin is the one with the red pants and the long hair.
In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc.
FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform "Lucifer" live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D When they explain to people how to do that move they say you have to "tense all your muscles and then pretend like you are being startled." Just wait until you see some more of Taemin's solo performances and discover how much of an expert he is a popping and ticking. He is considered one of the best poppers in the industry, and he can literally isolate every joint and muscle individually and make any part of his body vibrate at warpspeed.
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs. The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
"Lucifer" was released in 2010 -- more than 13 years ago -- so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with "Lucifer."
I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance.You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique.
SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and stylist of the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so his head was really shaved on the one side. What you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
Fun fact: I think one reason why Minho's hair is so short at this time is because their previous comeback was with their song "Ring Ding Dong," and all the members had pretty long, shaggy hairstyles in that MV. However, Minho has never liked having long hair. So, I think for "Lucifer" Minho decided to rebel and go really short.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair.
So, in this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18. (SHINee debuted in 2008)
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines, if you haven't yet, you have to check out a performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, ua-cam.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/v-deo.html, and/or their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" set at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul in 2016, ua-cam.com/video/mtFK7FxKdLs/v-deo.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it.
"Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise, which are designed to hit every beat of the song. (They actually refer to that tutting formation as a bug or worm. Their arms are supposed to look like the legs of a creature.) And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," ua-cam.com/video/-TLCK7KbLus/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/v-deo.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our most difficult and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D
You definitely should check out the dance practice. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever in the Kpop industry, released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and their "Lucifer" dance practice video is why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then, dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to do the same and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too. But like everything SHINee does, they were the first.

At the time (and still this day), Lucifer is considered one of the most difficult choreography in k-pop, and push male idol groups to have more complex dance moves. Fun trivia: one the composer of the song is Bebe Rexha (the singer/composer), she did the demo when she was 17.
Another suggestion: there is a live performance from SHINee World Concert V with Ring Ding Dong + Lucifer (Remix), it's amazing. The long-high note, Jonghyun did that live! Couple a days ago (24 and 25th Feb), they did two concerts in Japan (Tokyo Dome), it sold out in seconds (+100k, yeap, 100,000). Yes, SHINee is 2nd generation and EXO is 3rd.
As a non-Korean speaking Shawol, you are correct... I know every word of Lucifer's chorus and you can't help but sing and do the dance moves. SHINee has some bangers... you're in for a ride... their live performances are amazing! You'll love them!

Shinee are awesome at variety shows. They have a very early show called "Hello Baby" where they take care of a 4-year-old boy. It's the cutest thing.

This was the song that introduced me to SHINee! The dance practice for this song is the first uploaded dance practice in kpop (i believe). Onew is one of my S-tier vocalists. He's one of only two vocalists who can make me cry with his voice. Wait until you hear his rendition of Nessun Dorma.

It means the ones who receive light and we SHINee World (the name of SHINee's fandom) are the ones who provide them with the light. (Their name was designed with the same principles as the word employee, which has a double ee because an employee receives employment from an employer.) The double ee in SHINee's name is also used to show just how brilliantly they SHINe(e). Their official symbol is a diamond because, like a diamond, they absorb the light they receive and reflect it back to the world to make everything that light touches SHINe(e) even more magnificent. And when you hold the diamond up to a solid surface the shadow it makes is a five-point star, each point representing the five members of SHINee. (And that's not a metaphor, the diamond has been shaped in such a way that it literally reflects the shape of a star.)

Shinee plays around with lots of different types of music - I think the only box you can put them and their discography in is one of outstanding vocals and killer live performances (dancing, stage presence, and live vocals that had other groups watching their rehearsals from their earliest years).
I believe they have a lot of respect within the kpop world and have inspired a lot of other groups and individual performers. They also served as mentors to some extent for EXO, which debuted after SHINee.
I love their music from all years, but I have a special place in my soul for everything from Replay on up through 2017, with Jonghyun.
MVs are great, but the true key to SHINee is live performances; the Shinee World concerts are excellent examples of this and rarely get blocked). Shinee World 4 and SW 5 are particularly iconic.
All 5 members have outstanding solo discographies as well.
For other content... The Shinee Weekly Idol episodes tend to be very funny (I generally watch tgeearlier episodes most often, the ones with all 5 members). Shinee also did an engaging vlive to promote 1 of 1. There are also a lot of funny moments compilations as well as several really well done appearances on Korean SNL.
I love Shinee!! It took me a while to get into them though because one of the members passed away in 2017 and I didn’t want to find any sad stuff about him for a while. But now I like them.

My favorite show that they were on is honestly a show called Hello Baby where they took care of a little boy who I think was about 2 years old. It’s a show where K-pop groups take care of a kid or more under the age of 5 for a few months I think. They basically learn how to be parents. It’s a good show. I watched the season with an all the guy groups. lol

Agree. With SHINee, they don't have any lore or anything as foundation to build their concept. They develop their identity by their distinctive sound - which Korean music critics lovingly called as SHINee sound. Strong vocals and fabulous harmony are some of their biggest strengths.
It's almost unfair that they're also known as some of the kpop greatest performers. SHINee's live concerts are top tier gold ones and always sold out.
Try to watch some of their live performances, there's a reason why people request them a lot among those new and much younger kpop groups. SHINee is really that good 😊

If you want to know the meaning of early Kpop songs, there are YT lyrics videos with various translations (not always the best for early Kpop tho) and even coloured lines for the single singers. The first SHINee song whose video was released with official subs was from 2021, Don't Call Me (we only have Replay lyrics because the mv was remastered).
