  • Japan's government maintains that it has treated the water - enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools - that was used to cool the fuel rods of the Fukushima plant after it was damaged by the earthquake and resulting tsunami. The treated water will be diluted to well below internationally approved levels of tritium before being released into the Pacific, which minimises the risks, Material physics professor Robin Grimes of the Imperial College London tells CNA’s World Tonight.

Scientists say Fukushima nuclear water release into the ocean is NOT safe
On the 26th, the National Assembly of South Korea held the "Foreign Experts Invited Seminar on Fukushima Nuclear Wastewater Discharge". A panel of scientists told the meeting that the data provided to them by Japan was incomplete, inappropriate, incoherent, inaccurate and unsuitable for any decision.
"Hankyoreh" stated on the 27th that the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) scientist group participated by 18 Pacific island countries, including New Zealand and Fiji, pointed out at the "Fukushima Nuclear Wastewater Discharge Overseas Experts Invited Seminar" that Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. Regarding the Fukushima nuclear wastewater discharge issue, I think currently the international scientific community and scientists face the following difficulties:
    1) The nuclear wastewater composition is complex, and long-term impacts are hard to predict, requiring massive observational data and complex ocean environment simulations, while current related research is still insufficient.
    2) The Japanese government and TEPCO have not disclosed sufficient detailed analysis of the nuclear wastewater composition and treatment details, leading to the inability for independent assessment by outsiders.
    3) Scientists from different countries and institutions may be influenced by the policy positions of their respective governments, making it hard to remain absolutely neutral.
    4) Conducting cross-disciplinary comprehensive assessments requires huge investments in scientific research and long-term observations, necessitating cooperation among countries.
    5) There are certain scientific uncertainties, and different models may yield different conclusions, requiring thorough demonstration and discussion.
    6) The issue involves complex political, diplomatic and economic considerations, not just pure scientific questions.
    7) Currently the public attention and major research resource investment are limited.
In summary, this is indeed a very complex and important issue, requiring the global scientific community to transcend political boundaries, conduct pragmatic cooperation, share data and models, fully discuss different viewpoints, in order to reach scientific and rational conclusions. This entails a long-term process, but being responsible for our shared ocean environment is very important. I hope this provides some objective and rational analysis on this complex topic.

Another question to ask is will it affect the fishery industry. Answer is yes. Most affected will be Japanese fishermen. Also fish farms in surrounding countries. Just the perception alone will affect demand but over time this will subside as water quality of large sea base farms can be monitored.
Moral issues: the seas and ocean should not be dumping ground for waste. Japan should set an example. This is no difference from discharging pollutant into the atmosphere.
Again why total silence on alternate solutions. Use the water with cement to make concrete. This alternative has already being studied and found feasible.

IAEA has no mandate to approve this.
The concern has been around the fact that this water is not regular wastewater used to cool regular operations but contaminated water that came in contact with a nuclear leak likely to contain not just tritium and carbon-14, which can't be removed, but potentially a large number of other substances, radioactive materials.
So what we really should be doing is trying to minimize human exposures to radiation that are unnecessary and can be avoided. Any unavoidable exposure should be kept as low as possible.
In this case, there's a very important argument to be made about whether this discharge actually needs to happen and whether the alternatives have been properly considered and explored. Because for people, especially outside Japan, one could argue that there is no benefit from this discharge. There is only harm.
As for the ALPS devise, it's not widely used in industry practice. It's not been scientifically approved and tested in terms of its efficiency and effect.
The Japanese side repeatedly mentions the term "treated water." The fact is that of the 1.4 million tons of contaminated water, only a little bit has been treated. We don't know how the ALPS device could handle the vast remaining quantity of contaminated water.
The IAEA has no mandate whatsoever to issue a green light for Japan's discharge of contaminated nuclear water. What the IAEA can do is to set up the scientific standards, request compliance with those standards and monitor whether they have been followed or not by its member states.
This is not normal discharge. This is waste material that's projected to be discharged over many decades, which will continue to accumulate. We're not just dealing with the almost 1.4 million tons of contaminated water that's present now, some of which has already leaked into the ground water and will end up in the ocean, but many more tons that will accumulate over decades.
the final report and statement made by the chief of IAEA are self-contradictory and highly controversial. The director general stated that the treated water was drinkable and swimmable. That is surprising. If the water after treatment is safe, as he said, and can be used as drinking water and be used for swimming pools, why doesn't Japan use this water for its domestic agriculture and industrial purposes? If it's clean and safe enough, there was no need to discharge it into the oceans.
At the moment, we don't have any convincing evidence that the treatment of the water will work. Based on the evidence that TEPCO has released so far publicly, 72 percent of the samples of water that had been treated by APLS in one treatment round did not meet the regulatory standards. Some of them were almost 20,000 higher than the regulatory limit.
So we really have no proof that the purification system will work as intended. That's a very direct concern about this discharge. The one approach which the Japanese government is applying is dilution, as if somehow diluting the material, it obviously reduces the concentration. But the total amount of that material is unchanged. Dilution is not a solution, because it doesn't change affect the amount of material in total that is released at all.

In South Korea, the Wolseong nuclear power plant and the Gori nuclear power plant are 3.2 times and 2.2 times higher, respectively.
In Europe and the United States, the numbers jump even higher. The La Argre reprocessing plant in France is 454.5 times as large. The Bruce A and B nuclear power plants in Canada are 54 times larger, and the Heysham 2 nuclear power plant in the UK is 14.7 times larger.
On October 3, 2019, South Korean media reported that uranium up to 157 times the standard level was detected in 76 underground water sources used for drinking purposes. In many rural areas of South Korea, water supply is not widespread, and when the South Korean government investigated the quality of groundwater nationwide, many radioactive materials and uranium were detected, resulting in a level of 157 times the standard value, a level that could have a significant impact on health.
It has been half a month since it was revealed that a fuel rod in the reactor core at the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in China's Guangdong Province was partially damaged. As yet, the Chinese authorities have only emphasized that "no radiation leakage has occurred" and have not revealed any details. To begin with, the accident first came to light on June 14, 2021, when CNN television in the United States reported that a radiation leak may have occurred.

There is always around 3400 grams of naturally occurring tritium in the earth‘s atmosphere as it is constantly being produced by cosmic radiation interacting with the upper atmosphere. Most of those 3400 grams are in the earth‘s oceans. The water in Fukushima only contains 2-3 grams of tritium so releasing it all at once without dilution would have no measurable impact.

They can totally drink up the "safe" nuclear contaminated water, or use it to farm some radioactive fish to the market of japan, those fish should be totally "safe" to be consumed by human, or "safe" to be consumed by japanese and american at least.

The scientist keep saying its only mainly tritium..... which I call bullshit. Why don't they use it for farming. They should publish the percentage of different radioactive elements in the water. It is stupid to compare it to reactor cooling water release. Reactor cooling water is 100% tritium with a half life is 12 years, which is created from neutron bombardment. But Fukushima waste water touched the fuel. They need to tell the public how the cs137 sr90 was removed from the water and what is being done with the material removed.

Energy is conserved. Without terminating the energy reaction, or isolating the energy transmission, the radiated energy will not disappear out of thin air. The current practice is just to dilute it, and if enough people eat it, they won't die. But after the water is absorbed by the body, it irradiates the cells through the blood. What to do with egg cells, there is only one copy of DNA, if it is destroyed and develops into an adult, there will be organ function defects and limb disabilities

  • @GATE12JPN

6:20 Japan consulted with the IAEA on five methods.
    (1) water vapor release. heat up and throw away
    (2) hydrogen release; separates into enzyme and hydrogen and releases hydrogen
    (3) underground burial
    (4) geologic injection
    (5) garine release

IAEA "2, 3, 4 are unparalleled in other countries and have risks and are rejected. 1 is high cost and requires a long period of time. 5 has the lowest environmental impact and can be completed in a short period of time (about 30 years)."
The IAEA will set up an office in Fukushima. Grossi visited Fukushima and promised local residents that the IAEA will be here to the last drop.
Eleven countries participated in the IAEA mission. Scientists from USA, China, South Korea, France, Switzerland, Austria, etc. For the objectivity of the study, four independent research agencies outside the IAEA (USA, South Korea, Switzerland, and France) also collected water samples. After a complex process, they conclude that 'environmental effects are negligible.'
The point of this news is that non-scientists are fueling fears.

TBH, if they really are sure the water is safer than drinking water, they could easily do two the following things to clear the doubt.
      1. Invite experts from country that has doubt to conduct study on whether their treated water indeed is what they claim it is
      2. Have some amount of treated water used domestically, or even just have some interview and have those scientist drink it on the spot. (This is not practically economical as you would argue, but I think being able to convince people and have long term economical impact on their fishing industry and public image).
The fact that they are under such public dispute pressure that will cause huge impact on their fishing industry and international image, while there exists such obvious and easy ways to prove the their claim. The fact that they don't do it, just speaks for itself that they are not anyhow confident about their claim.

Australia and USA might think that they are far away and not affected, they are definitely wrong as ocean are connected. Some also think that they will eat fresh water fish and that will keep them safe but think deeper, river flow into the ocean but there are living creature move upstream and ecosystem happens. Seaweed and sea salt should not be taken for granted. MSG and many products need seaweed as part of the ingredient as well
