In a later interview Paul said: "we figured out in one of our first gigs, that our sobriety while playing live was important, so the crowd could get the full experience..."
*I think its safe to say that was this show*
Lol definitely
dang.. yea paul sounds way better sober
By "sobriety", they mean swapping liquor with massive bumps of cocaine. The tour for Turn on the Bright Lights was no holds barred. You can see in the 2003 Rockpalast gig that they're flying to Mars.
0r teh chimps can’t handle a stern reflection of Johnny Thunders & teh etc…
SHE IS BREAKING THE SIDEWALK, I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW TO-...
lol all these years I thought he said “I don’t even know her” 😂
I gotta give it to Paul. For how drunk he was, he still managed to play his parts fairly well(on guitar, vocals not so).
Did he just say at 8:50 "I don't even know how to..." I guess "... sing" is missing
he was doing his tiny tim impression
Fucking A right Paul played well, I would of blew chunks!
And he spoke French pretty well too.
Nah he did incredibly well, taking into account how visibly he was fucked up.
That Obstacle 1 performance went from being unwatchable because Paul was so drink to being the best performance of the song because of how drunk he was
As was untitled
This is honestly my favorite Interpol performance. If you've read the Pitchfork article about the making of Turn On the Bright Lights, read Carlos' recent article about the alcohol and cocaine abuse during this period of the band, this all makes this performance incredible. The half written songs; Paul's sloppy but almost impromptu version of the Obstacle 1 bridge, The New's incomplete third segment, a clearly inebriated Paul still developing his vocal approach... the cigarette smoking, dancing. Carlos' backing vocals, performances of lesser known B-Sides and demos (Precipitate, Song Seven), Daniel's Song Seven vocal passage intact... love it.
dradfromthebu where is the carlos interview, pitchfork as well?
Its magic
Doesn't his voice sound really thin to you? It is so much fuller today.
Great insight. I noticed Paul's vocal.
WOW! Paul is REALLY F ed up here. I had no idea.
Well done to the drummer for holding this performance together hahahaha
Phillip Lloyd well done with that picture of yours 🤩
Philly always holds it down
Well done to my mom for not giving up on me as a child
And then in the 2019 one he's so damn fast it ruins the lot lol.
They should open EVERY concert with "Untitled." It blows my mind that they do not. This is the perfect song for an opening.
"Pioneer" is a really fun song live though, I can't complain.
well it was the purpose of the song
i agree
Untitled followed by Obstacle 1, that's a killer start for a show
@@emmanuelmartinez100 such a banger
While Paul was dancing during “untitled” I got flash backs to Toby McGuire in Spider-Man 3 dancing in the streets of NYC
lol
X2 hahahah
Jajajajajajaja I thought I was the only one.
new york cares
maguire
This is the Interpol equivalent of the Radiohead mtv beach house
HAHAHAHAH SO TRUE
This was basically 2 decades ago... letting that sink in...
I don't know how to feel about that. Probably bad.
woah
Fuck sake. Life is fucking stupid.
Now it is
I cannot believe how good the bassist is, and how the bass wasn't even his favorite instrument.
This band sucks without him. I don't know anyone from when their first album came out that still listens to them.
@@softskullbubblebrain I still love and listen to them. Seen them like 5 or 6 times live, with and without Carlos. They still absolutely shred.
@@softskullbubblebrain well, they still have 2.6 million monthly Spotify listeners, so... obviously they won't have that original fame they enjoyed 20 years ago, but they're still well-known legends

He killed it haha🔥
8:45 "she's breaking the sidewalk" lol I can't, he was sooo drunk
lol
Is this song about a heavy chick 🤔
hahahaaha
This is a year before the album was released. Songs and lyrics change.
The best version of Obstacle 1 hahahahaha
obviously forgot most of the lyrics :P
"i dont even know her"
He was so fucking drunk
Revólver Fumegante or nervous, I really think he was nervous.
I thought he said "I don't even know how."
They hadn't even finished producing the album at the time of this performance, consequently, they seem very vulnerable. I like it. I think the vulnerability is very emotionally appealing, especially in Song Seven and Precipitate.
this is almost 20 years old and the guitarrist look exactly the same wtf
Daniel doesn't seem to age 🤷
i read somewhere he doesn't drink nor smoke
well he seemed fucked up here
@@blunderless there talking about the lead guitarist. The one not singing.
@@chandlerfelty1284 i know who daniel kessler is
I read a lot of comments right here. But, seriously, the only thing I (realy) noticed on this great live (HD is rare and awsome for 2001) is the shyness of all these great new musicians who just weren't ready to play their reserved first songs on a big stage. I enjoyed this moment.
Looks like their drummer did just fine.
cause Sam is the oldest man in the band
@@Yoshixd9 I'd say he was the least inebriated out of the lot as well hahah
i do agree
Trembling voice
This was a month before Sept 11. What a different world it was...
@HULK HOGAN thats right
damn… 🛫🏙️💥. 😔
i cant hlep but laugh whenever Paul says " she is breaking the sidewalk" LOL
23:30 love this. Daniel's singing here reminds me of the clash
TheFreekickerzUK that one verse by Daniel is better than anything the clash has produced

always reminded me of Stephen Malkmus especially on the record

omg I laugh so hard on this part
23 years ago i discover this wonderful band while downloading Peel Session's on Napster!! missing those days Music scene lots!!!!
How is Paul even functioning?
he is the liquor
I don’t know if a lot of this counts as functioning ha.
Alcoholics can do all sorts of things while totally f’d up. Hence the ‘functional alcoholic’ :)

love pauls dance in the beginning
Austin Marchbanks what is name the song has starting ?
Eduardo Pozo Castro it's called untitled
alejandro they are the best interpol at live
Good to see Paul's vocal transition for 2001 to 2015.
+Micah Jones oh for sure! From 2001 to "Turn on the Bright Lights" tour is a huge difference!! I love seeing how the songs progressed from before the album came out - get the bonus track CD for some great demos.
I much prefer the vocals and production of on the first two albums.
I wouldn’t say a vocal transition but he’s very drunk here, I’m shocked he’s playing his guitar so well.
Paul is off his head.
Paul is great, the band rocks!! Viva Interpol!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Im a little drunk right now but it doesn't change the fact that this is the best performance ever.
They were just living the moment, not worried about the commercial side of being an artist, which is something that should be praised.
Also, Precipitate is a song that I had forgotten and after watching this, is one of my top 3
They were drunk too hehe...
*And probably high*
Paul is totally trashed lmao
Oh i was there ! 17 years...time goes by...
I was there too. I was 17 years old and this gig ruined my life until a few years. Chloe Sevigny was there too in my souvenirs.
damn im 17 now and gonna see interpol in june. times crazy
@@faitmaisoncontact1518 how was the atmosphere of that show? Did people really feel that power of Interpol even with Paul being wasted lol?
When I saw this exhibition for the first time several years ago, I felt inside of me that I would love them forever!
8:10 paul's hands :D
A billion thanks for this video
Interpol has been my favorite band for YEARS and I’m not sure i’ve heard anything like the end of Precipitate here. You can feel the energy. They’re all, all there. Like Paul’s awake for the first time here. 48:43 “I have inside me, some strange glow. I’m still enjoying this, that’s why I made a mess.” - kind of poignant for the performance itself, no? Can you imagine not knowing who these guys are and then just being floored like this by the last minute and a half of their set? It’s like a love letter
I'm curious how did a band, more than 1 year before their debut album even came out, play a show this big? This is before Spotify or anything, so it's not like people were streaming Interpol, all they had was the Precipitate demo I think? Maybe one other demo? But at this point you have to imagine Interpol is super obscure still, yet here they are what looks like they are headlining some massive festival? I just don't understand how this show happened or how there were so many people in the audience for a band that was still more than a year away from putting out their first album.
Probably contacts from when they got signed
I don't think they headlined it but it's crazy they got into a big festival still
Also The strokes had just gotten big so everyone was looking for more of that, and here's another ny band singing about ny too with good looking young members that were clearly drunk all the time
@@juliangonzalez2930 Interpol are completely different sounding to the strokes so this hypothesis is likely to be false
x2
One time I asked Daniel if he would play Song Seven the next night in my city. He said, “I don’t know that one.” I replied, “what about A Time To Be So Small?” He then said, “No requests.” My heart was crushed but at least he was dressed DAPPER.
thats lame. a time to be so small is their best song.
@@Pilot_Abilene I will not argue with that!
Lets prepare our skin at 18:26. What a sound dude
Modo Triunfo i loved it!!
That part of The New is outta this world
The best version of Obstacle 1 so far lol, he was very nervous
This performances is PURE GOLD
22:59 - 23:10 OMG CARLOS D SINGING!!!
Actually that’s Daniel
@@weldobot13 no its fucken carlos
I had to check if I was crazy. The vocals are so off but now the band is flawless and I can't stop listening to the latest album. Crazy difference.
that and Paul seemed pretty drunk LMAO
Genius is recognizable from the start, even in the midst of mistakes.
My favourite interpol performance, the emotions are so genuine, Paul’s drunken dining almost gives it a feel of desperation and anxiety, a feeling that I associate heavily with turn on the bright lights, it’s a masterpiece.
Awww how cute was coked up Paul. Sober Paul is much better though.
Sincerely the best concert!!!
WOOOOW, just wow, I’ve never seen THIS !!! Thanks to UA-cam algorithm. Paul drunk (that’s so funny :d) and dancing, Carlos and Daniel singing. I’m really shocked, I’m gonna watch it right now!
Paul's voice 😍
Sam really killing it on Stella.
Más borracho que Paul Banks jejejej , gigante Interpol , lo mejor por siempre !!!
George McFly is such a talented bass player 👌
rare case where we can enjoy “precipitate” live
Despite this is (probably) Paul's worst, this is Carlos' finnest
Carlos is killer, kinda sinister in a very hot way
Paul seems a little nervous haha XD
A little? JAJAJAJA
Drunk as hell you mean
Yeah, to calm the nerves he probs just had a little to drink….. a little…
It is one of the greatest music miracles that they stayed together after all the drugs and booze and internal strife.
8:46 - 8:53 WTF? Wt Said? Love Paul drunk and nervous
At the end I think he said "I don't even know how to..." Sing?
I thought he says “and I don’t even know her...”
Wow - that is fucked up.
Now remember, he didn’t get sober for YEARS after this performance. Maybe he didn’t have another performance like this one but wtf must that time have been like lol.
It's like me when I was drunk and try to sing a song by Interpol without mistakes. xD

Watching this in New Year’s eve of 2022 ❤ I hope to see these guys in the upcoming year. This is honestly my favorite performance of them
Hands Away was unbelievable with Carlos on the keyboard. Incredible
8:26 Paul is very very drunk, i don't understand this part, hahaha is very fun
amo la manera en que a Paul le valió verga la tercera parte del verso en The New XD 16:28
OBSTACLE 1 IS KILLING ME LMFAOOO HES SO DRUNK IS SO FUNNY.
June 2024! Outstanding!
cocaine and alcohol can change a person for the worst, at least he's still holding it together, Im glad Paul got over it and pulled himself together, can be one of the hardest things to do, this performance is still great however, my friend who is a music producer is heavily influenced by Interpol's sound, I wanna throw him some love as he's been there a lot for me over the years, he's just released his second track try searching Lonely Gimmick - Pessimistic Weather ,you may be in for a surprise and he would love to hear your opinion
Hands down was absolutely otherworldly. That apart in the middle with Carlos on the keys....they were so in it.
*part
Stella is a masterpiece.
Performance 10/10
Crowd 0/10
I'm guessing it was there first time experiencing Interpol live? Each song received a great applause.😁
bEST SHOW OF MY FAVOURITE BAND
Carlos rules no hay más ni menos
Paul estaba súper pedo por eso extrañándote Carlos
I like this show.
The wasted vocals really add up to the album atmosphere for me. It's different when you can't grab the song because you're not capable anymore (like Paul nowadays) than having the possibility, but being too fucked up for that.
Esas personas fueron de las pocas afortunadass en escuchar precipitate en vivo
Fernando Cruz Molano y tambien song seven
Gran performance. Me quedo con la intensa versión de Hands Away, y sobre todo la oscura y majestuosa de Song Seven. Siempre pensé que ésta y The Specialist tenían nivel suficiente para ser parte de "Turn on the Brigh Lights"
Seeing Paul dance makes me so happy
Love revisiting this one...
26:50 los primeros conciertos venían con coreo integrada (miren a Daniel y a Carlos)
Jajajjaajjajaja Carlos xdxd
I fucking love this show so much
It took me 20 years to realize Interpol is the upbeat version of Joy Division.
@vic lmao
Brilliant voice&sound
This is fu..in rock, who want to watch perfection go listen the album, there a gorgeous authenticity on this performance, had the essence of the lyrics and the feelings impress on the state of the talented musicians, this times will never go back 😢 “you’re so cute when you’re sedated, dear…”
es viernes por la noche, gracias por este live ♥
this never gets old, i wish i was that fucked up right now
This doesn’t feel like it was 19 years ago holy shit.
The best version of The New.. Sublime!
I have been a fan for twenty years. This is a testament to the eternal human spirit.
One perceives almost the surprise of the audience in front of the birth of something great!
What does Daniel say when he and Paul are singing the chorus in PDA?
Sounds like 'simple tongue' and 'canon fodder'? Not sure, never heard him sing the line that sounds like 'simple tongue' before
Simpleton, you're simpleton, can I follow?
I believe (but I could be wrong) it is:
"Yeah simple times"
"Yeah simple times"
"Get on the pullout"
"What did I do?"
15:30 YEEEAAAAH SNORT COKEEE

It's epic live. The use of strobes makes it intense 😍
