  • War Of The Worlds The Attack Is A Surprisingly Faithful Adaptation of H.G. Wells Iconic story. But does that mean it's good? When I say this, I don't mean it's incredibly accurate and faithful or anything like that, but it's clear the makers of this film closely used the book as reference, way more so than most of adaptations of war of the worlds. This video by pupbenny is a review and analysis of The War Of The Worlds The Attack and in what ways it's similar to the book.

H.G. Wells The War Of The Worlds is a story by British author Herbert George Wells in which alien visitors from Mars arrive in space capsules first in Horsell Common near Woking in Surrey. This is at first thought to be a meterorite by the English men that discover this cylinder with the astronomer Ogilvy exclaiming that the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one. However, as the Narrator explains, Martian creatures soon make themselves present before using a Heat Ray to disintegrate some of the English people. They soon begin using massive Tripod Fighting Machines and using weapons such as the heat-ray as well as the black smoke begin to lay waste to the British army, leaving people such as the Artillerman and the protagonist seperated from everyone including his wife, and with the defeat of the ironclad torpedo ram HMS Thunder Child the Royal Navy as well succeeding in defeating the biggest Empire in human history, The British Empire at the height of it's power in the Victorian age in which H G Wells wrote the novel. The Martians very quickly establish a dominion over man as they spread their Red Weed across the Earth reaching the capital city of Britain London the Fighting-Machines cause great devastation. Other methods of transport the martian invaders use include the Handling-Machines as well as the Flying-Machines.
On paper there have been many illustrated editions of the story, the first of which were done by Warwick Goble in the original serial version. Relatively soon after, Alvim Correa drew his illustrations. Henrique Alvim Corrêa was a Brazilian artist who traveled to London in 1902 to present H. G. Wells with drawings that he'd done for the story of The War Of The Worlds and there have since been many been many illustration versions by artists such has Edward Gorey and Lou Cameron. There have also been audio adaptations of HG Wells War Of The Worlds, including the infamous 1938 Orson Welles War of the Worlds radio broadcast and the iconic 1978 album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds. There were likewise many attempts to bring the story to the big screen as well, including by icons such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ray Harryhausen, but it wasn't until The War Of The Worlds 1953 film by George Pal that this was finally accomplished. Later on, there's been Steven Spielberg's 2005 War Of The Worlds starring Tom Cruise and The Great Martian War 1913-1917 documentary style drama set in World War 1. Recently, the BBC made a TV miniseries the BBC British TV series war of the worlds and FOX, Epic and StudioCanal did a TV series starting in 2019 called War Of The Worlds that claims to be adapted from the source material. There has also been several war of the worlds movies recently as well, including 2021 War Of The Worlds, also known as Alien Conquest, which had a sequel called War Of The Worlds Annihiliation and this year in 2023 War Of The Worlds The Attack. There have also been many indie games and art with a survival horror war of the worlds 2005 game which will be a multiplayer survival game based on the Tom Cruise War Of The Worlds movie as well as a faithful adaptation of HGWells War Of The World game set in the Victorian era by GelatoDev and TeamGreen with Team Green also making their survival game a mulitplayer war of the worlds game as well and there's another announced in 2023 called The War of the Worlds: Siberia. There's also The War Of The Worlds 1913 game which is a worthwhile, fun and nicely stylised adaption of H G Wells The War Of The Worlds.

Although War Of The Worlds The Attack isn't THAT faithful (even inherently just by it's setting), it's surprisingly faithful for what this film is. It's very blatant they closely used the book as reference when making this film, far more than most adaptations, regardless of if it was done well or not, and I just felt that effort deserved to be praised somewhat.

I'll never understand why nobody has ever done a big screen version faithful to the book... it's a period piece, set in the Victorian era - and people love a period/costume drama - and sci-fi/aliens are popular!!!

7:30 Have to end/pause here as I’ve yet to watch the film, but a massive number of points awarded for an impressively unique, interesting intro, and well-thought out framing of what’s to come. This is one of my favourite books and authors (SciFi and General), whilst I appreciate certain liberties taken in many adaptations and re-re-remakes, there’s something powerful and understated when regarding a work holding as close to the OG source as possible. It’s almost like a Zero Sum or Diminishing Returns when exchanging certain elements or aspects for the sake of marketing, “artistic license” or a similar rationale. The film Trainspotting* for years served and serves as my default example of the best modern-day novel-to-film adaptation example. From the condensation of a complex, multi-plot lines, and bespoke style & voice, and the transformation from print to film! (The novel is a lot deeper and filled with many more characters and sub-plots, all of whom/which exist somewhere within Welsh’s expanded Universe in and around Leith, the Walk, and Edinburgh; and The Dam, but that’s another aspect deserving of a separate focus). The Academy Award Nomination for Screenplay was deserving and should’ve won based on the artistic performance and dedication to stay true to the author’s story, dialogue and vision. (I mean, Irvine Welsh’s cameo as Mickey F is spot-on!) The BAFTA Board did their jobs proper-like.
I know this work isn’t the focus of the of this vid, but it’s the best way I can translate what the Narrator is saying and bringing re: the authenticity and “feel” associated with the novel and this latest adaptation. Even noting the names and shifting from first and second initials, the blocking (stage & scene placement) characters during certain scenes, may seem insignificant, but the same as the credit to filming locations and UCL, it serves to capture the details making this story so incredible and enduring. Also, demonstrating the intimate knowledge and depth of respect this Gentleman obviously harbours and wields brilliantly covering the major plot material to the smallest character roles, names, and placement or a lack there of. Kick Arse!
As previously mentioned, I’ve not seen this latest version but I look forward to watching it based on the ~7mins I’ve watched on this Channel and the shared appreciation for the “little things” and why they’re so vital, esp. when discussing a novel that changed/solidified a genre set by Vernes and later, several others such as Lovecraft added credence, with Wells commonly cited as the “Father of Science Fiction”, at least the one who made the genre an established and respected literary genre vs a passing fad, and for a damn good reason. His works are accessible to everyone; sure, esoteric aspects appear throughout certain parts and works and the old “helps if you’ve read a few books before…” usually applies-can argue that one for almost every work or piece of art-but it’s the exception not the standard.
It’s this ease of access and the enduring legacy that makes his writings (Satire, SciFi, Humour, Political, and others, not all are novels of course) double as examples of his strengths as a writer and his genius as a person.
Most fans, especially the hardcore demographic, tend to dislike when their favourite writers gain popularity and appear on big and small screens (can’t be helped. Just nod along and politely excuse yourself! You/We are NOT gonna win that debate, lol) but, in this case, it’s a testament of how groundbreaking The War of the Worlds is!
A novel pushing 126-yrs old boasting so many films, TV/Streaming Services, to print and Modern-Author adaptations and (all staying within the literarily -recognised voice, type, & linearly canonical sequels or works set during or immediately following the OG work) abounds and some are rather good reads! From short story collections and stand-alone, many popular SciFi writers continue this trend and build upon a world Wells dropped in the 1800s! How cool is that? Not saying every attempt works, especially those involving print-to-screen, but the fact that writers from across the globe emulate and try to place their creations alongside this masterpiece, says quite a bit! It’s the literal “Show, don’t Tell” Rule, the first thing learned in Creative Writing 101, Uni Level, and AP/Honours Secondary (High) School courses (US).
I apologise for my verbosity and I doubt anyone made it this far down, fair enough, and I don’t blame you, but please know I’m not one to burn time typing about something or a subject I’m indifferent towards or rate as harbouring minor importance. When someone makes & posts something with so many qualities and a wide variety of POVs further securing the structure created and serving as the base for the Review/Critique (Hell, vs anything found on YT today) I feel it apropos to let them know it’s well-deserving of our attention and support from viewers as a “Cheers” and appreciation for their time and posting creation. This vid’s opening (at least the ~7mins I watched. Cheers for the Spoiler Warning), displayed this Gentleman’s abilities, capturing the essence and subtle aspects that cementing this Classic story and other literary masterpieces as such. Via such POVs, lends more influence and deserving of attention & respect whilst critiquing a film but using such a focused and learned angle-of-approach/attack method typically lacking these days. I look forward to watching this film and finishing this vid, and I am defo excited to check out the rest of this Channel, the works covered and those on-deck/yet to be covered, based on what I’ve watched so far. A well earned Like and New Sub, it’s not much, but please know out of the myriad Channels covering similar topics (in general) this one has the most genuine and well-researched/sourced “voice”, a trait that includes multiple devices too numerous to mention but refreshing in their display and the passion reflected in his voice and coverage. Thank you for posting and taking the time to inform viewers-some familiar with the subject and those with a passing fancy can follow and all can learn so much from this content. The fact he cites & sources in real-time, before explaining, comparing & contrasting each example is further proof of how much he places in these works and the (sadly, more and more commonplace) avoidance of doing things half-arsed! Nicely Played!
    Be well,
    TG
*Most ppl I know (at least those from and in the States) love the film version of Trainspotting, many try/tried to read the book-plus other, newer & older, works by Welsh-but quit after a few chapters. Not saying this as a negative, it’s complicated AF, esp when you don’t understand the slang capping an already difficult language barrier & cultural nuances. But it’s these “barriers” Welsh uses to perfection whilst creating & applying the depths necessary making each story, background, settings, characters, lice, pace, actions, internal & external dialogues, plots, sub-plots, etc. so real and the characters so relatable as heroes and anti-heroes. Oh, and, erm, within whatever category you (Meaning anyone) fancy placing Begbie. Personally, I prefer Spud’s categories: Pure Jungle-Cat through similar wild vs domesticated feline observations based on how The Beggar is acting at a particular minute during a given day! I know he’s not real, but I’d rather not risk having my arse kicked by a character. I know it’s not gonna happen but to quote (the late) Tommy, “The Beggar is foxtrotting psycho, but he's a mate, you know, so what can you do?”
    Cheers.

Wow, thank you so much for this comment! No need to apologise for verboseness, I read all of it and it's easily one of the most well-thoughtout comments I've ever recieved. I really appreciate you taking the time to write all that, and especially your extremely kind sentiments.
You've definitely managed to convey my kind of thoughts really nicely! I think quite a bit about how impressive it is and says a lot about the original novel not only just the fact that there have been so many attempts to adapt the story, but also that so many of those attempts themselves are iconic. In any medium! Film, musical or radio, whatever it may be, it's pretty amazing how much influence it's really had. And that's just the ones that are outright adapting the story. As you said, there's so many SciFi writers that continue to emulate it in their own creations.
I hope you enjoy (or enjoyed if you've seen it since writing your comment) War of the Worlds The Attack! Or at least manage to find some enjoyment out of it, as I did. I saw the bad reviews people were giving it but felt it wasn't getting credit for the effort that clearly went into it, at least in terms of in adapting the story.
Of course everything I say is purely my opinion and I'm certain I get tons wrong (I even wrote a comment on this video immediately after uploading with corrections lol.) but I do my best to learn about whatever it is I want to talk about and try to articulate my thoughts with respect to it (something I'll hopefully improve on!). So thank you again for your kind words, I appreciate it! (And apologies for taking so long to reply.)

I watched this randomly a few months back (around October I think) and was pleasantly surprised by it! While it isn't perfect, it is far from the worst WOTW films out there. Some of the acting and drama is rough around the edges, and it definitely did not have the budget it should have, but with how faithful it is to certain quirks and plot beats of the novel, along with the usage of characters and events you barely see, I found myself liking it more and more. I love what they did with the artilleryman, making him into a fleshed out character without defaulting to the "lets dig an underground utopia" element. Same with the parson, with him already being a crazed fella due to the death of his wife, and brought some amazing tension.

Is maybe the pair of rowing boats supposed to be the ferry crossing of the Thames at Weybridge and Shepperton, with the Apaches representing the masked batteries nearby which hit the tripod in the face in the novel, before the other five tripods get seriously angry and take their retribution on every living thing in sight and range?
In fact, thinking about it - and without having seen the film - the fact that they meet the Curate afterwards is exactly as the narrator meets up with the Curate in the book, after escaping from the massacre at the river and the destruction of Weybridge. So they're following the Narrator's journey - and not his brother's, who is of course the character who takes the steamer out of England and thus witnesses the fight between HMS Thunder Child and the three tripods of the Essex coast.
So I'm satisfied that this is not a recreation of the Thunder Child chapter at all.

  • @ianbeale2527

Pendragon Pictures 2005 adaptation of TWOTW's is the most accurate to the novel production so far. it includes the right setting, the right timeline and follows the novel very closely - including the dialogue straight from the book. It includes the Journalist's brother's story , too. Right up to the part where he comes across HMS Thunderchild .Such a shame that the acting and cinematography and "Special Effects"are so bad as to make it virtually unwatchable (Read Special Effects in the same way you read Special Olympics). Curious "Steam Punk" tripods. One scene where the Journalist is explaining the constellations to his wife on a horse and buggy - although depicted to be at night, was clearly filmed through a filter on a very sunny day ! Infact most of the night shots are done this way. The guy playing the Artillery Man shifts from several different accents as if he was told "OK, now let's try that as a Brummie. Now do a West Country accent ". Also, the actor who plays the Journalist, Anthony Piana, plays the Journalist's brother , too. The only difference ? A fake Freddie Mercury moustache that at one point is clearly starting to come off !
Such a shame. If a big budget version were done this faithfully to the original book , nothing would touch it. As it stands, we have a 3 hour adaptation that looks like it was made by 12 year olds for a school project. A tedious 3 hours at that. More to be watched for the novelty factor than taken as a serious film. But you would have to do it in half hour stints, rather than the whole 3 hours plus in one go.

I've tried to watched that too. Was really excited to track it down and sat down to watch. Got about 15 minutes in and gave up. I believe they reworked it - using some of the footage as flashbacks - one of the characters was telling the story in his old age

    • @ianbeale2527
      @ianbeale2527 11 місяців тому

@@sunraider0_0 I bought it Pre-Order on the strength of Pendragon's "teaser" trailers, before it was finished as it looked to be pretty faithful and the original cinematography looked good , too. Month after month, they would release new stills or footage that I'm sure convinced many to part with their cash.
They have edited it , too - changing some of the Special Effects (the screaming, writhing skeletons were particularly bad, after the people were struck by the heat-ray) bringing it down to the normal length of a film, around the 2 hour mark, but it also got scathing reviews.
The War of the Worlds: The True Story was another attempt at them retelling the story. It's done like a Mockumentary., as you say with the main protagonist as an old man telling his story to a film crew and it's cut together with supposed "footage" from back in the day. It's far better. The tripods are more menacing and the "genuine footage" looks semi convincing . But again, the acting isn't up to much and they dwell on still shots of irrelevant things. For instance, the guy tells them that "In the morning I ate breakfast" and there's a long , still shot of a plate with a full English on it. This is done several times during the film with certain things and it's annoying to the point you want to throw something at the TV. Yes, we all know what a breakfast looks like !

Going to say first I am not an american, but adaptations of War of the World should be set in the US to stay faithful to the book, as the US is the current world-power just as the British Empire was in the time of the book. One of the themes was, basically, there is always a bigger fish. Another point was, in essence, a critique on British colonialism and totally missing the point because the British weren't committing genocide, a modern take would have to be focused on america for much the same reasons.
