Studio Vlog #37 - A Cozy Day Sketching, Reading, & Visiting the Garden Center (and a thrift haul!)

- Happy Friday everyone! I hope you are doing well and had a good week! Today's video is another cozy studio vlog where I try to make the best out of a rainy day. I visit the garden center, do a couple of sketches in my sketchbook, and start reading 'The Girl Who Drank the Moon'. So go on and get cozy & I hope you enjoy :) ALSO, because there are so many lovely new people here, I'd love to get to know you! I was guessing at Miss Potter before the title came up! 🤣 I love that movie. Hated when Ewan died. 😭 I don't even have a private porch anymore, but I used to love to garden. It was just absolutely magical. We had a rabbit, and that was my fertilizer (the droppings; you don't bury the bunny). You don't have to compost it. It's great. My columbines were as tall as the mailbox. The philippine lily was taller than I was. We had the best dirt ever. I mixed the perennials with the herbs and the antique roses for my English style cottage garden. :)

Hi Randi, I loved your painting of the flowers in the foreground with the beautiful sky with lots of movement. It made me think of the movement in Some of Vincent VanGoah’s paintings. Did you know he was a pastor’s son and a missionary for a time to poor coal minors, then he decided to share God’s love through his paintings. Anyway; thanks for sharing your art and your day. This was such a cozy video to watch!! I love that you started the Beatrix Potter film while sketching. It's one of my favorite beginnings of a film. Congratulations Randi on having 5,000 subscribers. That is a big milestone. I really enjoyed watching you paint in your sketchbook and smiled at you watching Miss Potter. I love that movie and have it on dvd. I have read different bios on Beatrix Potter and have such admiration for her. Not only is she a great artist and writer of children's books but a great conservationist. Love her art. As for the weather here in PDX I relate to your comments about the weather. I get so excited if the sun comes out briefly and hits my sun catcher in the window and spreads a rainbow. Man it can get gloomy. One just has to make a warm comforting cup of tea and bring out a good book to read to make it better. :) I get so excited if we get sunshine as it effects my mood immensely. I get so much more done. I will have to eventually check out The Girl Who Drank The Moon. Right now I am a bit behind in my reading. I admit I pause to read Mary Oliver often as I need her poetry. Have a good weekend Randi. I always love to see the tools you use for your beautiful art! I wanted to ask about using oil-pastels in a sketchbook. Do they stick to the other paper next to the one you used them on? I got really inspired to try them out.

Hello! Thank you so much for watching! And yes, oil pastels will stick and smear on the neighboring pages, so if I am using them I will often tape a scrap piece of paper over the artwork to keep from smudging or I will spray it with a fixative that keeps it in place! I hope you enjoy experimenting with them! ✨

I could tell you were a Pacific Northwesterner when you said, “I’m going to take advantage of this sun break”. I had never heard the term “sun break” until I moved to Seattle from California 33 years ago. Now I live in Olympia Washington, so were practically neighbors! Loved this video. Thank you!
