Hell of a band with hell of a CROWD, great visuals but for me it was mostly the message - great song! What do words like that say to you?

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life.
The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it.
This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it.
This was my first time here, but certainly not the last, and as you said the lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).
    Greetings from Denmark.

Just to give an idea how much life sucked at that time is that king of Sweden had to replace 20% of his armies every year due to disease and desertions EVEN when there was no major battles going on.
Also, as a result of that war in Finland there was about twice as many woman of marriage age as men. This led to certain reforms that gave women more rights than before.

Tack för din story. Inte för mig. Utan mer tack för att det är den bästa sammanfattningen jag sett. Våran historia är så fin men brutal. Vi ska inte glömma bort vart vi kom ifrån och vad vi härdats av. För Sverige i tiden.

I was in that crowd, people where litteraly singing the entire song, one of the best concert experiences I've had. Sabaton is all about War history, every song is about important battles, wars or specific notable soldiers and divisions. The 30 year war that this song is about is when Sweden became one of the major powers in Europe and it always end up with the crowd singing along when Sabaton play in Sweden. But the cool thing is that they have songs about pretty much every country, and most of their songs are in English. Some songs from them about American soldiers. 82nd All the way (about Alvin York), To Hell and back (about Audie Murphy) and The Lost Battalion (about, well the Lost battallion).

Make sure you watch the whole video, there's a lot of cool stuff. Some American/German history there. It's also very emotional) and "Devil dogs" (official music video. It's about the U.S. Marines. I'll just put it out there... That whole album is just amazing! I'm neither very patriotic nor am I religious, but the lyrics of those songs still get my blood pumping and I feel a sense of pride (I'm Swedish) as well as sorrow for all the dead... From the opening track that leads into the song about Gustav Adolf - The Lion From the North to the final track about the death march of the Caroleans after the death of Carolus Rex - Karl XII, they hit hard and I have nothing but respect for the way Sabaton handled the history behind the songs, not shying away from uncomfortable truths (Ett Slag Färgat Rött / Killing Ground is a perfect example)

This song is about the 30-year war 1618-1648 in Europe.
Are they Sweden's Metallica probably not but big enough to have huge world wide fanbase.
Sweden and Finland has most metal bands per capita in the world so there are something for everyone.
This is Sabaton's most emotional and probably slowest song, but still powerful.
I've seen this some hundred times and I get chills every time (and I was there (I'm the one with the cellphone lit up))
12500+ was there and I promise every one sang along.
    Right before the song:
Joakim: tomorrow we will perform in Stockholm (capital of Sweden) so let's have contest who sings better Gothenburg (the 2nd city of Sweden or Stockholm
(my note: well what city is on the video :) )

sabaton is put to the side by much of mainstream media over here because some closeminded people seem to relate metal with nazis or racists somehow.
couldn't be further from the truth.
(edit) i realise that this is most likely because of how sweden and the rest of scandinavia feels about patriotism. we have always been somewhat modest about that topic in all of scandinavia, so it might also be because of how our society views the patriotism in these songs as a whole, not simply because they think sabaton might be nazis or racists.

Coming from a native Swede - Landowners would give peasants (of all ages) as a tax right-off to kings and queens of the countries part of the Thirty Years’ War, and in that way, soldiers were sent to go off to fight the war (adding a small fact to the comment written by the Dane below ⬇️)

  • @jizeta

Here's my translation that also goes well with the melody. Let me know what you think.
I turn around to see my homestead fade away
I wish I could have stayed there, just another day
Not yet a man, though called to arms to do my part
Will I see my home again, I wish with all my heart
With kinsmen from my village I went out to war
    In a world of flames
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend
the father and son, who won't come home again
    But who mourns over me?
Went out to war for Sweden, baptized in blood
No gallantry awaits us, dying in the mud
In fields where friends has fallen, there’ll be no songs
Our fate once more we challenge, and marching on
    Far away from home
(To be baptized and die in war)
    In a world of flames
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend
the father and son, who won't come home again
    But who mourns over me?
And when my time is finally here
    Who’ll sing my song?
    They’re fighting on
I hope to die without much fear
I fall asleep, and fade away
    And never wake up
‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man
I give my life, for my motherland
    But who’s missing me?
    So see me as them
    the husband and friend
the father and son, who won't come home again
    But who mourns over me?
