I’m new to your channel but so inspired with all I’ve learned already. Thank you so much! I keep joking with my husband that you are the Bob Ross of sewing because your voice is calm and soothing and no problem that can’t be fixed. Love your content!
Catherine, I'm not sure why, but I've bumped into several of my sewing friends this week when alterations came up in our conversations. Each time, I've referred them to your channel. Your demonstrations are not only helpful but fun to watch. I am motived to run to Goodwill to find clothes I can cut up and put back together. LOL! I'm a quilter, so honestly, it's not that much different. Thank you! Happy summer. Peace.
I’ve done the same thing! Told all my sewing friends. These videos are so great. Always learn a few tricks and Catherine is just so pleasant to listen to. Has that awesome teacher vibe!
You are really going to get more and more subscribers and have great success. You have all the components. You’re great on the camera and you’re a natural teacher and you show everything really clearly thank you
I was pondering how to go about adding room to the waist of a pair of jeans, and the triangle fabric piece came to mind, but I just wasn't sure about it . . . Thank you for this!
I have used this technique before, except the garment wasn't frayed, so I sewed the gusset together and serged the raw seam edges. It works brilliantly!
Morning Catherine from New Zealand.Love your channel so professional and you explain steps so well.I have been a sewer all my life but at 82 am still learning new ideas. If its only the waist band that is tight you can easily gain 1 to slightly more inches by removing the waist band completley and replacing a more stretchy band from another pair of jeans.I have done that several times. Also do away with the band and use elastic the same width as band.Ok if you dont intend to tuck in the top.All the best.
I just found the cutest 50s retro dress for 4 bucks!! It is very small and has lining!! Yikes! But you inspire me to figure out how to make it bigger so I can wear it just for fun!! Takes me back!! Lol!! Love to dress up!!
Fabulous instructions; thanks for showing how to expand the jeans waist! I’ve been just cutting the waistband & adding elastic in each side because I wear my shirts over to, not tucked in. This looks much neater! 🤗🇨🇦
This is a great tutorial to show how simple increasing the waist is! Ever since I hit mid-50’s I tend to accumulate my extra weight in the waist. Urggg…. So maddening! But this shows how easy it is to fix pants that fit everywhere but the waist! Thanks!
Nice. I have done similar fixes in the past 👍🏻 when I buy trousers if I buy to fit my waist, the hips ate too big. If I buy to fit my waist, the hips are always baggy 🙄 very few people are standard sizes, I think 🤔. It's very useful being able to sew.
I absolutely love you and your videos! I need to sit & think & get back to you via email...Sorry, it's been a while but I'd gone to NJ, CT, & NY to visit family & once back home I got wrapped up with work & housework, but I promise I will be emailing soon because I definitely need to do something that's just for me & take a chance on myself!❤
Another great beginner lesson for me - thanks!! Do you have any videos on how to turn thrifted women’s curvy jeans to non curvy jeans especially fixing a droopy or saggy butt? I’ve had them taken in at the waist but my butt is saggy 😊
She did a video where she does this to one of her shirts. I've used the method and it's fairly easy. Look for Sew a V Neck four ways. It's about 4 months old now.
There is no way I could wear pants like those; because, the metal studs would cause painful skin ulcers on me (that will leave scars later). However, I did need this video to make my thrifted, new, Jim Bean slacks fit me better in the waist. Thank you. Your altered pants look great on you.
I have a family member who is also very sensitive - it won't help with these jeans - but I always sew their things with the seams on the OUTSIDE ! :) so they always have contrast thread and a rough edge look - and their skin is much happier :)
Love the alterations and so quick! Question for you - I bought a beautiful round vintage tablecloth with a ruffled hem (about 3 inches). I thought about making a half-circle skirt with one half and then trying to make a matching top incorporating the ruffle. I had wanted a dress at first but thought that would not work. Any suggestions?
Ooooh, the skirt would be gorgeous! You could use the whole thing to make a full circle skirt, but if it’s big enough then, yes, a half circle would be beautiful. The top would be more challenging.
Hi! Ran into this episode on one of my favorite podcasts “This Is Uncomfortable”. It’s a two part report on fast fashion and it’s impact on people and resources. Loved it! Wanted to share with my upcyclers and recyclers. Enjoy!
I just did two pair like this, I actually used a piece of an elastic waistband from some old denim shorts. The only issue I've had is they were both mid rise and after adding the gusset it dropped the front down a bit lower.
I’m brand new to your channel and to sewing absolutely love the way you explain watched an old video of the swim suit which I’m scared to try . Quick ? Can u recommend a cover stitch machine .
I've done this with several garments. I don't tuck in my shirts so it isn't a problem, especially when I don't have the fabric to match for the triangles. Without knowing how to sew I would have a limited wardrobe that wouldn't fit.
Would you ever consider coming to other places in Canada to do a thrifting and upcycling event? I know your cross border trip will be great, however the exchange rate on the dollar currently isn’t wonderful. It costs $1 Cdn dollar to buy $.70 USD
How would you cut a pair of pants that have a high-rise elastic waist to fit my waist. I'm having to fold over at the waist or have them come up almost to my bra . Thanks 😊
Oh, do you mean replacing the whole waistband? Yes, I could have done that but I’d still need the triangle insert below the waistband so it wouldn’t get me much further ahead, plus I’d have the belt loops and rivets to deal with.
I was thinking that since the jeans have extra features like zips and extra pockets, a rectangular patch across the waistband section only, finished with rivets would look functional and disguise the inserted triangle.
@@elaineforan4751 oh I see! I really did need a bit more room below the waist band, so the triangle was necessary, but I love your idea of finishing with more rivets!!
I have a couple of yoga pants that a smidge tight around the waste. I don’t wear them because of they become uncomfortable after a while. I wonder if I can do the same thing as you did to mine? They’re stretchy so I hope I don’t mess them up. 😳
I know this is not on topic but did you do a video about turning jeans into s skirt. I thought I had seen something on that but am not able to find it.
Question, I am trying to brainstorm to adjust a one piece bathing suit for a wheelchair user. She can not walk. Use a lift to transfer to bathroom. She would love to wear a one piece swimsuit . We need to make sure there is a flap to open for her to use the bathroom . I’m think of cutting it below the belly button and above the pubic area. Then finish the seams and put snaps on it . Just trying to help her out since I am her nurse and she is going to the beach next month and possible cruise next year. Any help would be appreciated, thanks Diane Hartley
@@CatherineSews I was able to create the swimsuit! I used snap tape. At the highest point of the leg opening I sewed the elastic in place then cut up about 2 inches and arched it to the other side. Secured the seams, then put the snap tape on the crotch piece was squished together due to the round edges. Then put it on the bodice piece. It did not quite line up but she was so happy that now she can wear a one piece to the beach.
So much of what you show on your videos is teaching me things I’ve always wanted to know how to do properly!!!! I just Love learning from you!!!!!

Me too! The timing is perfect!
So great. Makes we want to keep my old jeans just in case.😊
Thanks for the instructions. I’ve tried this before and it’s a great tip!
I never wear short tops so no one ever sees the modification 🤣🤣

So cute AND helpful-thanks so much!
I did this once with wide elastic triangles. Perfect fit and it matched really well!

Thanks! Always enjoy your vids!!!
I would love to add an inch to some of my mid-rise jeans waistbands (ie take a midrise to a lowrise)- would love to see your ideas!

This is so informative. I did this once in the center back seem but it never did sit right.side seems are so much better Thanks for the video
Very cute!

This video is very timely--- gotta add a bit of room to last summer's pants...thanks for the great videos!

True! What area would be good for you?
How would you cut a pair of pants that have a high-rise elastic waist to fit my waist. I'm having to fold over at the waist or have them come up almost to my bra . Thanks 😊
I think I recognize the jeans you cut up. You had made skinny jeans into wider legs? Anyway, cute results and thanks for the instructions.
Yup, you’re right!
Catherine, why didn't you just finish the waistband with a copy of the original as you had matching fabric? Just curious if there was a reason.
Oh, do you mean replacing the whole waistband? Yes, I could have done that but I’d still need the triangle insert below the waistband so it wouldn’t get me much further ahead, plus I’d have the belt loops and rivets to deal with.

Hi Cathy, it's in this one: ua-cam.com/video/CdTlyAvOZJc/v-deo.htmlsi=Xw_hSU5jw5xfosTN
You can try using a zipper foot to pass a stud.

What about making it snap right at the crotch the way body suits open and close?
@@CatherineSews I’m worried about pressure points that can cause skin break down.

Those ones???? These ones??? Just those….or just these. No “ones?”
Throw out and buy better fitting pants.
Way to miss the whole idea of sustainability.
