- The Donkey Rig! Fishing Blowing Up All Around The boat! Bait Finesse! Let's do this!! The bite is wide open right now! Bass are targeting small baitfish all over the lake and we're taking advantage of it! Come along as Matt targets bass as they ambush bait, it's so good he even catches them two at a time!
We love this time of year! As night time temperatures drop bass turn their attention to baitfish. If you understand how to adapt to this, the fishing can be incredible! Today we're catching them on flukes, donkey rigs, topwater, jerkbaits, crankbaits, and bait finesse. It's really amazing!
Below you'll find links to the exact baits and gear Matt is using throughout the day. From the exact colors of crankbait, to rigging the double fluke donkey rig, to our favorite bait finesse rods, all the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Matt is lying...EVERY technique is his favorite 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Guys passion is infectious I fucking love these guys
As is mine 😅
Ohhhhh... snap
@@guyb5333 if it was me..7' medium action, 15 lb. Braid...that's what I'd use
These legends are the reason I continue to fish. Im always learning something!
My all time favorite fishing channel to watch on youtube and i gotta say that lake looks amazing, and all the bombs going off. Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks for explaining your rationale for selecting the spot near the bluff wall. I have some great gear but am not greatly skilled about the where and when part. More of this would really be appreciated.
Happy Friday! Thanks as always Matt and Tim!
Getting me pumped and ready to go fishing ounce the sun comes up!
Fall is one of my favorite seasons to fish. A lot of times you’ll have the lake to yourself. It’s a blast to get in the schools and wale on them! Thanks for the video Matt!
Great lesson, thx your a smart fisherman, i fish lite baits, I started fishing creeks than ponds now lakes for 50 yrs. When I moved to Tn. I started fishing a 1.5 cotton Cordell Blk/chartreuse, I caught a bunch of 5 pounders and caught my PB largemouth 8.4 on a sr-5 Rapala shad rap. I’m now going back to small baits more since I saw your show. A lot more fun isn’t it? With that being said (Donkey Rig)
The way them bass were blowing up on the baitballs was insane, awesome footage. 👍
I thank every technique is Matt's favorite..😂😂
I took a treble hook right in the thumb meat of my hand just like that. It was the best day of fishing I've ever had. I now have a tattoo right there to commemorate that momentous occasion! Lol
It was like that last weekend here in central Indiana, hopping it's on again Sunday! Awesome time to be on the water.
It never fails- you guys always get me pumped back up and ready to go try it again. I got beat down the last two weeks man- it was brutal, no mercy. I caught one thing- a snake- which has never happened before- a first. I've had them chase my bait a little and I even snagged one with a crankbait once- which was stupid because then I'm like- "What now?" Luckily, he solved the dilemma for me and came off the hook. This one though- got his teeth caught in my rubber worm, he actually bit the thing. I pulled him out from under a rock and almost up on the bank, threw my rod down, and retreated- he finally spit it out and swam off. I saved the Ole Monster that has his teeth marks in it. But yeah, other than that- nothing. I was around the fish- but they wouldn't touch anything I threw. They were cruzing up and down the bank in pairs and occasionally a loner- but they wouldn't bite anything- they ran from even little micro baits like they were scared of them. So, I put on a S-waver, and they wouldn't even follow that.
But- something I didn't think to try was a jerk bait- and in the past- in that same situation- that's what worked. I should've remembered- but watching this video reminded me- I'm going back tomorrow with my jerk bait box, some flukes, and some plopper style baits- probably some prop baits to, and a popper. I've got a good feeling about it- I think I just need to shift gears and remember it's fall- summer is gone. Thanks guys- I needed this one.
0:30 is the situation every fisherman wishes would happen
For real, that footage was 🔥
So cool to have all of that on film
Man….when that back treble hook on a topwater is right on the front of the bottom lip……😳😳 Good catch, brother! ❤❤❤
6:42 wasn't that a hybrid and you didn't even say anything haha.
Love hearing all those blowups...reminds me of CL mornings too.
Those little Duo jerkbaits are great, and like every Duo bait they are completely ready to fish out of the box. Great split rings and great hooks.
Thanks Matt for a great day on the water, very enjoyable.
Legendary stuff! Thank you MA
Man i love fishing this time of year. Bass just blowing up everywhere, i get so pumped up with adrenaline when i see them bombing shad everywhere.
There is no greater fun than schooling fish that keep on going and going. I won my local league championship on that sort of scenario last year in one hour with a small finesse jerkbait.
You guys are my favorite to watch and learn from.
Believe it or not, my go-to lure right now is a 2" or 3" spoon. The bass are gorging themselves on tiny shad and I've caught several in the 3 lb range recently by swimming the spoons horizontally.
I like you don't edit a lost fish.
Makes it real 👍
Thats just a beautiful fishery and those bass are breaking the water everywhere my goodness😅
Love my 7’5H Zodias. Just like you were saying, tons of power but enough bend to still work baits effectively. My go-to pitching jig rod too
i need to be using that donkey rig. Thanks mat goo stuff.
To think ive never actually seen a school of bass blow up on baitfish in person before. Im just dying to come across that experience
The best way to starypu weekend watching a new video thankz guy's
Great Video Matt.
Awesome! Great video!
that fish jumping around behind you was pretty cool. looked bigger than the 1 in your hand.
Caught some good catfish off that bluff wall across from the towers 🤙🏿
Nice to see you with that Duo Realis. I also like the Duel Hardcore Flat 70. I have so much confidence in the Vision 110, it's always surprising when it doesn't get bit, but a downsized one does. Also, comforting for me to see all the blowups, and you unable to catch them. Probably one of the most frustrating things to encounter on the water. Though, nice adjustments to finally get on them.
For the donkey rig I use the longest leader in the slide side and the shortest one tied direct to the main line...in cases of double strike I get a better hook set ratio in this way
That’s a good tip! Especially if they normally eat the longest one first. Thanks!
That donkey rig looks really effective. I gotta try that.
Awesome job Matt,thank you ❤
Great to see BFS used to catch additional bass.
Cloudy like here now.... tomorrow fishing session 😅
I use a similar technique with 2 power worms. Didn’t know what it was called tho. I’ve caught 2 at one time many times over the years. Cool vid
you should try a BDL rig. on schooling bass. it can't be beat.
I have been waiting for this one. Just a guess double fluke aka donkey rig!
Just did this last weekend! Absolutely so fun, 200+ fish on a bfs minions and poppers so awesome
you should try a BDL rig on those schooling bass. two at a time is a very common occurrence.
I’ll take a burrito while you’re at it!
My favorite small finesse baits are the zman Ned's it's like impossible to not catch some on them lol
You guys got me onto first bfs setup lol now don’t really see the need for spinning set ups. 😅
That nice huh?
Last fall I had the same situation fish blowing up everywhere around me. Jerkbait was catching whitebass and tiny spotted bass. After getting frustrated for 30 minutes trying everything I owned. I put on a plain white buzzbait and smashed for hour and a half caught 27 largemouth from 1 to 3 1/2 lbs. The best buzzbaits bite ever. I was worn out.
you try a BDL rig. when they are schooling on the surface, it can't be beat.
Great vtdeo! What was the spinning combo that you were using for throwing the underspin? I'm looking at the Expride B series and want to get a good all around spinning set up
Looks like a lot of fun. What power plant is that in the background?
Matt,
You are really missing the boat on those feeding bass, you could catch 10x more fish with a #8 flyrod and some streamers!!!
1. Weightless basstrix on #2 straight shank *fish it fast and twitch to constantly make it jump out of water
2. Riser bait 007R
you should try the BDL rig.
Could you do a donkey rig Carolina rig ? Or would it be counter productive?
By any chance did you guys get a chance to test out the VMC Redline trebles for Vision 110 hook replacements?
Anyone else think “popper!” At 21:02
Dude looks like the Sam Hyde of fishing lol
That looks like Watts bar?
Dude I live in Chattanooga and I’ve been getting skunked at the ponds for months. Can I come fishing with you? I need it to catch a fish for my sanity
What if its a pond and they're eating each other?
So what makes the Zodias 7'5" Heavy stand out over the 7'2" Heavy or the new 7'3" Heavy for the donkey rig? I'm wondering if any of my current rods can fill that role or if I'm gonna have to buy a new rod haha.
😂😂😂😂😂 Relax bro
Concerning baitfish size, bait that isn’t eaten grows up over the course of the year and is bigger by the next fall and soon and soon so shouldn’t the bass be accustomed to bait of all size up to the maximum size a particular bait gets? I have seen finger sized shad in my home water and dinner plate sized shad as well.
Whatever size the baitfish are that make up the massive baitballs in your lake are what size you should go with because that is mostly what the bass are targeting. There may be smaller schools of larger baitfish in your lake but that is not likely what the main forage is at this time, in my opinion.
@@adt83livewhat you said Plus I feel like the younger baitfish are dumb and the bass know that lol. Easier to catch
Matt is a fish everyone knows the rules.
How do you set up that donkey rig?
Just after the 19 minute mark he explains how it’s setup
🔥👁️🪶👁️🔥
First!
Yes sir! 🥇🏆🙌🏻#️⃣1️⃣🎣
I wish you would teach guys like me that live in Southern arizona where fish are harder to catch than anywhere else you can fish for 12 hours with no bite gets real frustrating when you throw everything you talk about for this time of year and nothing as you just pull one in after another makes me want to quit fishing how long has it been since you fished 12 hours with no bite?
You don’t fish 12 hours without a bite when you’re as good as Matt is. Lol. It’s just simply not on the menu.
Trying to get a feel as to what’s going on.. “kicks trolling motor and focuses on pan optics” 🤦🏻♂️
I used to have a g loomis glx 744.. prob be perfect for micro donkey.. it got stolen at the kayak launch.. 😮
Dude was born with the perfect speech impediment he was born to say bass-ssshh
