How is the view count only 163M when I've listened to this 163M times?
Many of us elders are living largely on memories and is good to keep as many of the good ones alive that we can and minimize the unpleasant ones.
This song reminds of my grandparents. They both fought in the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920. They were separated in the conflict when the train they were on was blown up. My grandmother and grandfather happened to be on opposite ends of the train when the bomb went off. Each thought the other was dead. Two years later they walked past each other on a train platform. They were married for 75 years.
Beautiful
This story is good enough to be in the film!
Speechless!!
Woah wtf...I-
Classic
In 1975 I met the love of my life. I married him in 1979 and this song, FERNANDO was our song! And still is - in 2019 we will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Thank you ABBA for Fernando. Xxxx❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍾
Congratulations for Ur upcoming anniversary.
Nice

Deirdre Ryan I hope u guys have fun
Deirdre Ryan tell me.. was the 70s awesome :) I heard it was such a beautiful time, this song is hands down my favorite ABBA song well this and dancing queen and I’m 25 and i fucking love abba more then an other CRAP RAP group of today
I am listening on March 31, 2024 - and... I like ABBA songs since the late 70s.
@DavidRafuse I am 27 years old and I like ABBA!
As a rocker growing up in the 70s I would never admit to liking ABBA..but WOW, they really were gifted..So many great songs
In the 1970s ABBA was seen as naff. Yet they've aged much much better than all that progressive progrock sh*t.
gotta be open-minded to all music , music is art
Nowadays metalheads and hard rock fans are open about their love & respect for ABBA. Lemmy in Motörhead and Ritchie Blackmore were both big ABBA fanatics and were open about it, even back in the late 70s. Any rocker that likes ABBA should check out the band Ghost, they are can fill an arena headling these days so it's likely that many of you know of their music.
Their discography has so much ABBA inspired pop sorcery mixed with an tradtional late 70s/early 80s heavy metal/hard rock and a hundred other sounds from different eras. Their newest album is recorded at ABBA's old studio and you can hear the same piano as used in Money, Money, Money on two songs on that Ghost album. Spillways is one of those two. Highly recommend. Cheers mate!
Was afraid to admit it in the 70's too! Love them tho!
I know this opinion is very controversial but I much prefer this song to the Beatles song "She loves you". "Fernando" is about the Mexican revolution. The other one is another love song among hundreds.
My Grandfather always loved this song. When he was on his deathbed, I played this for him, and while he was sick and exhausted, he cried but smiled when he heard what was playing and did his best to sing the words despite being short of breath. I'll forever think of him when I hear this song now. Rest In Peace Grandpa, Francisco Fernando Cabral.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It will get better, I hope that he is happy now wherever he is
Its very touching.
I wish my grandchildren sing songs of my favorites in my death bed.
I'm so sorry my guy
Sorry for your loss
Very good memories for you!
Sorry about your loss.
Listening to an ABBA song is like eating potato chips. You can't stop after having just one.
EXACTLY 3 mins later I’m listening to gimme gimme gimme
That's a really good analogy.
Very true
Great description, yeah 😀
True that!!!
Their melody purify the soul❤ much love from Kigali Rwanda 🇷🇼

Anni-Frid's voice is pure gold
And Agneta voice, too. Really the blend of their voices is out of this planet.
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando...

I am Spanish and I was studying in the USA, the very last day of class there my history teacher put this song just for me. He was the teacher that I loved the most. I almost went down and cry because I was leaving soon and we will never see each other again. Thanks Mr. Ryan

After 40years they still make me cry happy tears. Best group ever, the music is eternal....thank you for the joy keep me bringing me❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ABBA FOREVER
They were uniquely talented, they had so many hit songs - no other band ever sounded like them.
You mean 50 years? It has been 50 years since abba won the eurovision
@@Fred_S. It took me 30 years to appreciate ABBA.
Fernando spent 14 weeks at no.1 in Australia in 1976, a record still unbeaten to this day and one I dont think anyone will ever beat.
Did he stay at the Hilton ??

Probably the InterContinental.
+Prince Plotena just reread, totally percieve it wrong ,sorry honey I am from the Pink Floyd Gen, but what's that tell you. I love love ABBA no apologies have a nice day
You know that we were just joking right?
The thing with ABBA's songs is, they're all so good it's literally impossible to pick a favorite.

Easy peasy winner takes it all is the best. Sounds uplifting but in reality its absolutely tragic

edit: but i still listen to like 10 of their songs all the time so ...
edit 2: ok i think about it 10 minutes and i have to admit "winner takes it all" god damn it man i dont know how to write this but its amazing... No way you can pick 1 favorite song from ABBA there is no fucking way
One of the most meaningful, albeit misunderstood songs by abba. Even my old folks think this is a love song about a lad named Fernando. This song makes me think of my grandfather who fought in WW2. "I was so afraid Fernando,...none of us were prepared to die...I am not ashamed to say the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry...they were shining there for...liberty". So poignant and powerful.
My name is Fernando, my dad’s name was Fernando too. This song hits different since he passed away
I love Abba, 40 years ago l met my husband and was the first time I ever heard an Abba song. I have been hooked ever since. Fernando has a special meaning. He escaped communism, Romania and when he made it to America he knew he would come to Las Vegas, we worked for the same hotel and casino. The first time he felt real love, that is when he saw me. He told himself that he was going to marry me and spend the rest of his life with me, then he introduced himself and we have been together 40 years. He was on a battle field, people hunting him and his father over many countries, they made it to Italy, then after another year he found a sponsor to America. I was truly blessed when he told me who he was, a very handsome man. I am surprised he didn't have someone else but l guess life brought us half way around the world, we met and have spent our life together. God blessed us both.
God bless you guys :-)
fantastic story. could be made into an epic movie
that's so beautiful
My favourite song when I was young. Also my dad and mum. Now my dad has gone, so I was listen it with my lovely mom and daugthers
Abba wrote three versions of Fernando. The first was in Swedish and told the story of lost love. The second was English and told the story of two veterans in the 1910 Mexican Civil War. The third was in Spanish.
My father loved this song. He fought as an infantryman on the front lines in three wars. This song makes me cry for him.
I had the great experience of meeting and conversing with Panch Villa's widow. It was in 1971 in Chihuahua City. She was 79 years old. Her name was Maria de la Luz Corral viuda de Villa. She had a powerful voice, joyful and full of confidence. It was memory that I treasure. In her house she had the car in which Panco was assassinated, full of bullet holes.
@@tribulusterrestris27 Wow. What a wonderful happenstance. You should write about it in the newspaper or something.
@NextWorld Pancho said to Luz that he wanted to kill a certain fellow. Luz said to him, NO! he is a good man, Don't do this and he spared the man. After Pancho's death, there were four wives that wanted the big 50 room house. By then the fellow she spared was president of Mexico. Somehow he had heard of this conversation and he granted the house to her.
@@tribulusterrestris27 With a little fleshing out, that story would be worth at least a couple hundred bucks in Reader's Digest.
@NextWorld Thank you, Next, but my part was tiny. These other accounts are just in the historical record. But to share another bit, Pancho and his men were gathering money from business owners and individuals to fund their military operations. That's where he met Luz in her mother's little store. He liked her looks, but most of all, he liked that she was articulate. She was 18 years old, and he proposed marriage. She was the second wife. It is said that he had more than forty "wives." But Luz had a special distinction. She is the only wife who had a marriage certificate. They went to the Catholic priest, who said that Pancho would need to do confession. Panco said that he had committed so many sins and done so many bad deeds that the priest would simply not have time enough to hear it all. The priest then said, "Well, then let's just skip it," and the marriage ceremony proceeded as scheduled.
Luz became an important part of the revolution. At one point, for her safety, she went to Cuba briefly, then spent about two years in San Antonio, TX. She spoke to me in good English, which presumably she learned in TX.
I'm playing this at my nans funeral next week. She loved ABBA so much.❤

Their music style is unsurpassed in my opinion, more refined than rock. The sound the world loves best!
Turning 20 this year and I'm still loving Abba. I was around 4 or 5 yrs old when I first heard Abba songs and it was my grandpa who introduced it to me, and growing up I like to listen to them and now my grandpa is dead. He died way back 2011
❤❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
With small changes in the lyrics , song could easily be about the Russian Blockade runners. On all Five Poles and running lights blacked out. The battle shock effect is handled well, without screaming shells, etc
Great song.
I turned 30 in october, ABBA was a special thing my grandpa and I shared starting from when I was very young too. he passed away late in 2008. kindred souls!
My grandfather didnt know anything about Abba, but he enjoyed Tennese Ernie Ford, and Eddie Arnold. My grandfather loved me unconditionally,he died of a heart attack at 88.

Not only did they speak no English when they started before they were a group, but on this song they manage to sing flawless English with a hint of Hispanic accent also, and make it work. Astounding!

Still the greatest group in the world
We really love AbbA's music and we will be listening as long as we are here!
i am Mexican and and I am very grateful for this beautiful song that this group composed, the song is inspired by the monologue of a Mexican war veteran who tries to talk with Fernando, his battle partner, and nostalgically reminds him of moments when they participated in the Battle of La Angostura in 1847 in the context of the American War of Intervention, referring to the fact that freedom was finally achieved for Mexico.

Fifty-three years, ago, 4 million Biafrans died, defending themselves, against a genocidal war, WE NEVER THOUGHT, WE COULD LOSE. The US, UK, Russia, and Egypt, ganged-up against oil-d ich Biafra, in spite of global condemnation of the massacre of 2 million Igbos in Western and Northern Nigeria, and Lagos. In May 1966, alone, 350,000 Igbos were killed in Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, and Sokoto, alone. I joined the army, to defend a piece of earth, where my people could be free, from the constant pogrom. We would not have lost, without the UNHOLY, ahistorical alliance of America, Britain, Russia, Egypt, etc. Israel broke ranks with the US, to give us some support. The Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Tanzania, Enegal, Haiti, and other, Christian nations, threatened with US sanctions, gave us FOOD but, not arms, to defend ourselves. Abba's Fernando brings tears, to my 79-year old eyes.

This song reminds me of my cousin Fernando who was murdered for a car (during a highjack) , while his one-year-old daughter sat in the back seat. Fernando was a hardworking young man who cared about his family. He's been gone close to 30 years now, but this song with his very name, the mention of the night (he was murdered at night), makes me miss him so much, and what he could have been for his wife and his daughter! Why does listening to ABBA songs in my 50s just make me cry? Goddammit!
Their songs are full of melancholy, even the happier upbeat tunes of theirs have this element. Melancholy is something writers, musicians and artists in Sweden often have included in their art since decades before ABBA come along.. few have done it as well as ABBA before or after though:) Often makes one happy while also a bit nostalgic and sad, i reckon that feeling increases the more you age and think back on the good ol' days. It's also just masterful songwriting in general.. that evokes strong feelings/emotions as a result.
Anni-Frid is truly beautiful
