- As mentioned a while ago, my goal is to go back and make rankings on past years of Eurovision, with 1997 being up next!
The 1997 contest of Eurovision took place in Irish capital Dublin. A total of 25 countries competed this year.
The 1997 contest was won by the United Kingdom, achieving a fifth victory with Katrina and the Waves' "Love Shine A Light". Host country Ireland finished in 2nd place with Marc Robert's "Mysterious Woman". Third place was achieved by Türkiye with Sebnem Paker & Grup Etnic's "Dinle", a record result at the time.
Italy returned to the contest for the first time since 1993, but ended up withdrawing again the next year, only to return all the way in 2011 later on.
After not having qualified from 1996's semifinal, Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Russia returned for this edition, while Belgium, Finland and Slovakia were relegated and therefore had to sit the year out.

My Favourite Eurovision Edition of the 20th century.
Here my Top 10:
10. France
9. Spain
8. Estonia
7. Ireland
6. Denmark
5. Iceland
4. Italy
3. UK
2. Cyprus- close to be my Favourite from them
1. Turkey- more then agree. Best entry of 20th century for me
My Top-3 on ESC-97:
1. Alla Pugachova (Russia) - 12 points.
2. Marc Roberts (Ireland) - 10 points.
3. Marcos Llunas (Spain) - 8 points.
Finally we're entering the really good 90s. I love the contests from 1990 to 1997! Here's my top 10:
1 - Malta (I love this entry, with the intriguing verses and the amazing chorus. And you might have already seen that a good instrumental wins me over, so yeah)
2 - Poland (Another really good instrumental, and this song is also quite different, definitely one of Poland's best)
3 - Estonia (Some might say I overrate Estonia in the 90s, but I think most of their entries are really good, and really for my taste. This is no exception to that)
4 - Italy (Such a good entry for a country that was about to withdraw. The chorus is impactful and catchy, and overall it's just great)
5 - Bosnia (I'me probably overrating this a bit, but I just can't help but love this song)
6 - Turkey (For once, I share a very popular opinion and I really like this song as well, it's very Turkish, like other Turkish entries, but I think this one does it the best)
7 - Greece (Similarly to other entries, I love the instrumental here. It also has a Greek vibe, which I love)
8 - UK (Have to disagree with this winner. I mean, I like it, it wouldn't be my 8th if I didn't, but with all other amazing songs, it doesn't feel like the right winner to me)
9 - Spain (Typical Spanish pop which I may be overrating because I'm Spanish, but I do like it, even if there's many songs similar to it)
10 - Switzerland (This could be much higher, but there's something in this that doesn't work for me. Still a pretty good song though)
This is one of those years that makes me go "oh, yeah, that is also from this year, how am I gonna make my ranking" or something like that hahah. There's just so many good songs!
Hey! Actually my all time favourite song in Eurovision is from 1997! 😍
And you put it 24th 😭
Interesting choice! I haven't really seen anyone take a liking to that entry in particular. There's an audience for everything I guess! 😅
@@ESCStroopwafel true, but I introduced this song to my friend who never heard of it before and he immediately fell in love with it. For me it has been my favourite song for like a year.
Cyprus is my number one this year. Their best ESC entry and among the best Eurovision songs ever 😍
And I agree about Netherlands being underrated. Have no idea how it finished so low
My 2nd. My 1st is Greece. I love Mediterranean and Aegean culture❤

Am I the only one that thinks that the Norwegian entry is one of top 5 worst songs in ESC history ?
It *did* finish in last, but you're the first person I've heard who says he absolutely doesn't like it at all
