Having been married for nearly 35 years, I have had the joy of listening to his, ever evolving, musicianship. Lovely, Dereck. So much to chew on here.... The mono aspect. So many people are being raised on the idea of enhancing the reality of music with 5.1 and so forth. I am from a generation who appreciated music on record as its OWN reality. Not better but 'different'. Mono therefore was an experience with its own focus. Much like the audio on a vintage movie and yes I feel comfort and warmth from that sound too. Second thing,....oh I love the way you introduced us into the 'jazz club' upon puttinh on that record. So right. Those opening gestures...the 'head' of that opening tune are indeed indicative of a 'good night about to happen' at Ronnie's or wherever it is. Yep. You create good moments. And Ray Russell...no doubt he's on some of my records too, and I didn't know!! :)
Hey Dereck. I ordered one of Ray Russell's solo records recently called Secret Asylum. For a session player he was capable of doing some far out skronky stuff. This one sounds a little mellower but nonetheless extremely tasteful. Sounds like a wonderful release I hope to see more from the Jazz in Britain label. A lot of wonderful work being done in regards to reissues.
Ray has also done a load of compositions for major British TV programmes and I think some American ones also. Your spot on about him not being a flashy or showy player Dereck. He plays with joy, pleasure and an economy of effort all marks of a great axeman.

A missed fact in all the written comments ........ 43 years ago David Bowie wrote the song "V-2 Schneider" for the Heroes album. This shows also how signifikant Florian Schneider was.
Please can you check out this Album for a pianist called Roy Fry ......I knew him many,many years ago ...... can you confirm he is playing on this album ????
Some minutes ago I got the record from Poland - so my RR record collection is completed... Now I will hear his great 'Wade In The Water' from Rock Workshop with my friend Bob Downes playing a fantastic cooking tenor solo. Russell fans shouldn't miss this record...
