SA oil and gas: Prepare to meet thy boom - Mosa Mabuza, State’s chief geologist

  • More than 75 000 people have read last month's BizNews article based on our interview last month with James Lorimer, DA Shadow Mineral Resources Minister where he likened the country's oil and gas potential to the Diamond and Gold booms that transformed the country. At last count, the recording of that interview on UA-cam has been watched by almost 140 000 people. Here's the obvious follow up - the "official" view from the South African State's chief geologist, Mosa Mabuza. His message, based on the science, is equally upbeat. In effect: Prepare to Meet Thy Boom. Good news at a time when the country really needs it.

Africans in general need to be aware of the external forces that are working to gather these resources. It was noticable when Mozambique discovered their gas deposits and all of a sudden terrorist and corporations were waging milita warfare. The like of French Totale, and British Petroluem among others like Chevron etc.
This is something SA needs to be ready for as well.

We import 5/6th of our crude oil. We pay for those imports with dollars. That translates into massive capital outflows and is a major contributor to the strength of the rand. The doom and gloom in the comments section is worrisome. Guys, it's not easy but we have to make sure that we vote the ANC out of power for the betterment of the citizens of this country. I can probably accurately ascertain that all of us regardless of class (Upper Middle Lower from a financial tiering scale) we are all suffering the interest rates hiking up, inflation taking a brisk walk (not a runaway yet) food prices are through the roof and fuel costs are unreasonably high. I wont even start with Eskom. We need a new Government that will have the best interest of the citizens first and foremost. Build capacity to be able to extract shale, and extract the oil we have offshore, refine it and consume what we need and sell the rest and drive a massive infrastructure upgrade and roll out, new cities & new universities. All this wont be realized in our lifetime but at the very least let us see the ball rolling. ANC will sell us out to the highest bidder dont get it twisted. Look at what they have done to Eksom with coal. Imagine what they would do with Supply Chain of Gas/Oil.

Ok, so take the public into your confidence and explain who benefits from the largest gas discoveries along South Africa's coastline, the Ibhubisi Gas Field. The Canadians said they would not build the onshore infrastructure for lack of guarantees. Instead , they would extract, then liquify the gas on the surface, pumping the liquid gas back into the cavern from whence it came.
The implications are, 1. Oversight of the process i.t.o. auditing the quantities o gas processed 2. monitoring the extraction of liquid gas 3. Protecting the offshore stores of liquefied gas. amongst other concerns.
How is or has this project benefited South Africans? Why is South Africa wanting to frac when this resource can provide enough gas? If piping gas to Mossgas is not feasible, why not use State-owned tankers? The State could also put out to tender the transhipment of gas to any suitable vessels rounding the Cape en route.
Meanwhile, the South African coastline has been auctioned of to many Foreign Companies. There is too little coverage and disclosure of these activities. Something smells absolutely rotten.
    imho.

Gas is 5X more expensive than grid-quality Solar - has no one told these people that the fossil fuel industry has a 15 to 25-year life span before it is OVER. these fossil fuel proponets are just that fossil thinkers out of touch with modern technology and a cost advantage in Multiples cheaper, not a few percent but Multiples cheaper.
South Africa's Value lies not in what is inside the ground, but what is ON TOP - 820,000 square kilometers of Desert and semi-desert, just like the area around Beaufort West. Cloud cover in a year is absolutely ideal for grid-quality Solar/ Vanadium GW storage. Following a successful EIA study, they could have 5 or more Gigawatts up in a year 20GW in 2 years; long before any Gas operation could even start being built? money spent on trying to destroy what little groundwater is in the karoo is a waste of time, and it could never compete from a capital cost ..
India installed 2.25GW for $1.4B (2020), a 2.25GW Gas fired-powered generation would cost $ 6 billion (excluding the cost of getting the gas out of the ground) and take at least 5 years to commission - oh sorry this is an ANC run project lets Tripple the Budget and double the installation time $18 Billion and 10 years instead of ONE!

Even if the proceeds are diverted to the corrupt it will still benefit the economy. We import 5/6th of our crude oil. Those imports are paid for in dollars. That represents massive capital outflows that contribute to weakening the rand. These fields can easily make us energy independent and we will probably export as well. Which will represent capital inflows and contribute to strengthening the rand.
