Could you imagine going to a place and being instructed by a heavenly messenger every year? What an incredible experience that must have been for him! Also very humbling - he must have questioned himself time and time again wondering if he was up to the task that God expected of him.
It sounds like Martian Harris was a good friend to Joseph Smith and, I believe, his intentions were to help Joseph in the work he was called to do. With all those who opposed Joseph, it must have been a great comfort to have a friend that supported him.
