Always loved this song--I'm old--and the other night, listening to Bowie with my daughter, I asked her to play this at my funeral, just to make one of my cousins in particular laugh when she heard "I'm An Alligator!" She has a great laugh, and I know that line would surprise her, because she's not a Bowie fan, and she wouldn't be able to stop the laugh and I think it would make all of my other cousins laugh, too, hearing her, and they would know I wanted that to happen! They'd be a captive audience then and would have to hear that gorgeous guitar solo! My last gift.

@@j.j.4150 obviously but they're just getting into him so they should be introduced to certain hits before moving into his complex repertoire. Plus they were just introduced to the concept of Ziggy so they should listen to that song next imo.
@@danholmesfilm Yeah, by that logic they will have finished getting through the Radio Hits in 10+ years. Would be different, if we would get more than 1-2 Bowie reactions a year looool.
Yes, the whole album and his Ziggy Stardust character was a concept that deserves a complete reaction. Bowie was at the forefront of the Glam Rock style, though his band took a little convincing with the clothes and makeup. They were a bunch of guys from Hull, working class, down to earth, tough Yorkshiremen, but after they saw the attention Bowie was getting from the girls it was..."Pass me that eyeliner!" Don't worry too much about all the lyrics making sense, he was being deliberately enigmatic most of the time. Bowie would use a technique of just writing down snippets and one liners, cutting them up , throwing them in the air, and then seeing what interesting combinations would come up. Some songs though did have a narrative, 'Five years' is a great apocalyptic song from the same album.
Fun fact he used to cut words out of magazines or write them down and put them together randomly to form a line when he was stumped lol i love it and i adore David Bowie. Thanks guys. YES DO THE WHOLE ALBUM wow dude crazy story at the end lol
With so much Bowie out there this was an odd choice, but I'm not going to complain. More Bowie please 👍🏼 Try 'Golden years', 'Heroes' or 'Fame' to be mainstream, or 'Lady Grinning soul', 'Rock' n' roll with me', or 'Wild is the wind' for something a bit different.
NOW WE ARE TALKIN !!!!!!! as good as it gets...period. seeing these guys on tv changed my life. that there. fellas,,,is MICK RONSON on guitar (and string arrangements...and possibly piano). my all time favorite guitarist. that said....when asked the question 'if you could bring on band back ....' this is it for me. the spiders. awesome. you need to check out a LOT more bowie. so much there
An iconic landmark album from one of rock music’s most iconic British artists who overnight invented a whole new genre along with Roxy Music, T-Rex, Iggy Pop etc.
Moonage Daydream is an Absolutely Amazing Song With Bowie’s Vocals and Mick Ronson’s Guitar Piano & Strings Ronson’s Solo at the End blended with Mick’s Strings & Piano just make the Song Other Worldly. Next tap into Ziggy Stardust , another Perfect Song with Bowie & Ronson
I don't think they're ready for T-Rex yet either. Marc Bolan was a genius though. Another great glam band from the 70's is The New York Dolls, but again, I don't think they're quite ready for them yet either
T. Rex has some great stuff, both stellar and interplanetary. The problem I've found with introducing new people to my old-school T. Rextasy is that you have to either embrace that one song everyone knows, or avoid it altogether. Which to do?
@@thatoneguyagain2252 It is true, that song would not be a good intro to T-Rex, that song is only a banger if you've heard how brilliant other songs are, then you can appreciate the fun of banging a gong.
Marc Bolan could not advance from Glam Rock. Bowie was more creative and used Glam Rock as a springboard to a long career. If Bolan had lived, he would have been another Syd Barrett.
Andy and Alex, I envy you two for the the unique combination you have-your musical empathy, understanding of the technical craftsmanship in rock songs, and ... your total innocence of this huge trove of great, classic rock music! I love this eara Bowie he was so creative, his coloboaration with Mick Ronson (its Mick on guitar) was so good, they even produced and played on Lou Reeds Transformer album as well.
"The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" should be a contender for a full album review. A classic album and one of the great concept albums of the 70's. However, nothing will be right in the universe until you check out his masterpiece, a little tune called "Life on Mars?" from 1971's "Hunky Dory." I say "your welcome" gents, in advance :)
I listened to Five Years and Savior Machine and it was weird but I got chills. It feels as if he's talking about our world right now. He truly was forward thinking on so many different levels.
Bowie was a fascinating mix of music and theater. He created a succession of characters that he built albums and supporting tours around. This song and several others were him playing Ziggy Stardust as you said. He later moved from psychedelic rock to more soul/R&B and developed his next character the “Thin White Duke.” I saw him live in the early ‘80’s behind the “Let’s Dance” album and he was terrific. One of the most charismatic rock front men ever. Couldn’t take your eyes off him.
Glad you picked this Bowie track. Would probably make more sense to you if you watch the live Ziggy Stardust motion picture version. The interplay on stage between Bowie and Mick Ronson brings it to life. Suffragette City next please!
Bowie didn’t cover “Under Pressure,” he co-wrote it with Freddie Mercury. That’s Bowie with Queen on the original album cut. Many people only know “Under Pressure” from Live-Aid when Queen performed it without Bowie.
@@new_mercury5367 Oops, you are correct, it is footage from Live at Wembly '86 - without Bowie - that is all over UA-cam. When that footage was combined with footage of Bowie performing the song from a separate concert (without Queen) to supply footage for the studio track, a lot of people assumed that the song they were hearing was likewise a remix. It wasn't, which was my point. Bowie co-wrote the song and is on the original track.

Great lyrics. "I'm the space invader" .. remember, this was written six years before the video game "Space Invaders" was invented. Check out "Five Years" (the opening track to this album), where he alludes to man slowly killing the earth ... this was decades before climate change was even a thing.
Spring 1977. 13 years old, my first listening to an entire Bowie album. Suddenly we are no longer little Beatle loving hippies, we are GLAM!! Next year Punk Rock!!
"Young Americans" for sure. It's the song that made me pay attention to Bowie. After you react to the studio version, watch the live on Dick Cavett video (with a big band that included David Sanborn on sax and Luther Vandross on backup vocals) and imagine a 14-year-old staying up way past bedtime and trying to wrap his head around that performance. Or watch Bowie duet the same song with Cher as part of her TV show.

No offense, but can we get any more generic? He got better stuff.
Entire David Live album is amazing...songs like Cracked Actor, Aladdin Sane, Jean Jeanie, Suffragette City good listen to start to finish
Remember, the liner notes instruct the listener, "To be played at maximum volume"
Nuff said!
THIS would be a great full record for you guys to react to! Literally a masterpiece concept record. ✌️
2022,iam 58yrs old and still feel like iam listening to Bowie all over again for the first time. My absolute Hero and miss him every day.
Definitely do the whole album, you guys will love it, I promise. Loved the bit at the end lol!
It's a perfect full album, should listen to the whole thing. That story was awesome. Keep rockin, freaks! 🤘👹⚔️
Absolutely agree
Andy did Fame without alex and They both did Heroes but i TOTALLY AGREE with the others, and they could do the full version of Lets Dance
MANHATTENMAN ! I've been suggesting Let's Dance for forever! Full version of course
From that album I would have picked Starman.
MANHATTENMAN ! Thanks, I’ll check those out 👍🏼
NOW WE ARE TALKIN !!!!!!! as good as it gets...period. seeing these guys on tv changed my life. that there. fellas,,,is MICK RONSON on guitar (and string arrangements...and possibly piano). my all time favorite guitarist. that said....when asked the question 'if you could bring on band back ....' this is it for me. the spiders. awesome. you need to check out a LOT more bowie. so much there
An iconic landmark album from one of rock music’s most iconic British artists who overnight invented a whole new genre along with Roxy Music, T-Rex, Iggy Pop etc.
Moonage Daydream is an Absolutely Amazing Song
With Bowie’s Vocals and Mick Ronson’s Guitar Piano & Strings
Ronson’s Solo at the End blended with Mick’s Strings & Piano just make the Song Other Worldly. Next tap into Ziggy Stardust , another Perfect Song with Bowie & Ronson
Here is an artist that isn't on your radar, but was a big player in the early 70's glam rock movement, like Bowie, T. Rex. He has some stellar stuff.
@@dynodon9182 Sadly, I have to agree with you. But in the short amount of time that Bolan's star shined, he was brilliant.
Great! 5 Years should be your next to set the album up. Yes full album!
If ever you were gonna do an entire album reaction, this album is the one to do!!!!!
Ziggy is a must listen in its entirety! Recommended songs are Queen Bitch and Life on Mars from the album Hunky Dory.
The Young Americans
Yes. I'm not a big Bowie fan, but that song is so good.
Andy and Alex, I envy you two for the the unique combination you have-your musical empathy, understanding of the technical craftsmanship in rock songs, and ... your total innocence of this huge trove of great, classic rock music! What a fabulous, lucky situation to be in, in the year 2020. Makes me feel young again, to just see you guys react. Fantastic, fantastic channel! The best reaction videos, by light years!
I love this eara Bowie he was so creative, his coloboaration with Mick Ronson (its Mick on guitar) was so good, they even produced and played on Lou Reeds Transformer album as well.
I just did a quick search and I can't believe you guys have never done a Melanie song. Have you heard her? "Candles in the rain-Lay Down"
"The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" should be a contender for a full album review. A classic album and one of the great concept albums of the 70's. However, nothing will be right in the universe until you check out his masterpiece, a little tune called "Life on Mars?" from 1971's "Hunky Dory." I say "your welcome" gents, in advance :)
I get the happiest feeling when I realize that kids will be enjoying Bowie and his band a hundred years from now.
Five years, that's all we've got... After hearing the whole album, all will remain unclear but you'll feel a whole lot better. TMI on the story...
He later moved from psychedelic rock to more soul/R&B and developed his next character the “Thin White Duke.”
I saw him live in the early ‘80’s behind the “Let’s Dance” album and he was terrific. One of the most charismatic rock front men ever. Couldn’t take your eyes off him.
I think album needs to be listened to as an album. Singles are great but the whole piece is a work of art.
Glad you picked this Bowie track. Would probably make more sense to you if you watch the live Ziggy Stardust motion picture version. The interplay on stage between Bowie and Mick Ronson brings it to life. Suffragette City next please!
YESSSSS!!! ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!! Bowie is my favorite artist. Musically and as a person In general
Fair play to you bro 👏
Such a huge list of musical history from him.
Golden Years, Fame, Modern Love, Absolute Beginners, Changes....
The history of David Bowie is amazing.
BOWIE was sooo cool..... Covered under pressure with Annie lennox at the Freddie mercury tribute concert.... Excellent
Bowie didn’t cover “Under Pressure,” he co-wrote it with Freddie Mercury. That’s Bowie with Queen on the original album cut. Many people only know “Under Pressure” from Live-Aid when Queen performed it without Bowie.
@@thecrye6798 And such a missed opportunity, since Bowie followed Queen on the London stage at Live Aid.
@@thecrye6798 under pressure wasn't played at Live Aid
@@new_mercury5367 Oops, you are correct, it is footage from Live at Wembly '86 - without Bowie - that is all over UA-cam. When that footage was combined with footage of Bowie performing the song from a separate concert (without Queen) to supply footage for the studio track, a lot of people assumed that the song they were hearing was likewise a remix. It wasn't, which was my point. Bowie co-wrote the song and is on the original track.
@@johncrye8821 he was also originally on cool cat but asked for his parts to be taken off.
Another great one by my favorite artist. I am so lucky to have saw him 2 times in concert.
Whole album listen necessary to even begin to understand this masterpiece!
One of my favorite Bowie songs guys. EVER!!! You’ve re-hooked me. Sorry to admit, I was almost out cuz of some recent songs. Thanks for this.
Bowie’s Suffragette City would go nicely with that Alex story at the end!
YES!!! Definitely need to do the entire album... also gotta give credit that this came out in 1973... this was the first album I ever purchased! 😍😍
It's ALWAYS fun to watch 'til the end. This one was probably had the happiest ending of them all.
Best comment.
Not for her though.
Thank you so much for this! Great reaction! One of my favorite songs off one of my favorite albums. Definitely have to recommend "Suffragette City." Slaps so hard.
On the Highest Holy Jewish Holiday of
the Year (Yom Kippur), I was praying for the Funk. ."Sly and the Family Stone"
song "Thank You(Falletme be mice elf agin)" circa 70!!! Love Bowie, and he would most definitely agree regarding Sly!! He was a big fan of the Funk which inspired "Fame" !!
Embrace all faiths & races.
Once again -desperate prayers gone unanswered. Why have you forsaken us lord?!
Have an easy fast and a sweet & rockin' New Year! Hopefully better than this last one. : )
About time you got back to Bowie. You have so much more to hear. There's a reason he's the greatest solo artist of all time. OMHO.
"The Width of a Circle"
"All the Madmen"
"Black Country Rock"
"Watch That Man"
"Station to Station"
More Bowie to check out includes, Space oddity, Changes, Suffragette City, Heroes,Fame, Golden Years, Ziggy Stardust, Cat People, Let's dance, Modern Love to get you started.
'Five Years' is more intersting lyrically and isn't just gobbledygook. 'Life On Mars' and 'Starman' are also excellent.
And of course “Five Years”. Predicts the birth of Kanye West - 5 years to the day after the release of this.
And then - damn take a look at the cover of Ziggy Stardust - K West!
🤪
What's wrong with gobbledigook?
@@edwardmeradith2419
Wow! - - interesting synchronicity.
Keep in mind when listening to 'old' Bowie, that most of the effects were quite new at the time, sounds and Mixes we take for granted now.
Great lyrics. "I'm the space invader" .. remember, this was written six years before the video game "Space Invaders" was invented. Check out "Five Years" (the opening track to this album), where he alludes to man slowly killing the earth ... this was decades before climate change was even a thing.
I purchased this album when I was 12. One of the best albums from the 70’s... wham bam thank you ma’m.
The whole Ziggy Stardust album is exceptional
Spring 1977. 13 years old, my first listening to an entire Bowie album. Suddenly we are no longer little Beatle loving hippies, we are GLAM!! Next year Punk Rock!!
“Rebel Rebel and Sufferage City next!!
MUST check out the film boys.
Guys for your women of rock list. Just heard Helen Reddy just passed aged 78. Please please play her feminine anthem "I am woman" Whilst miming, I think her performance on The Midnight Special from 1971, shows what a magnificent strong, proud and talented young woman she was
Suffragette City, The Jean Genie, Station To Station, and Let's Dance
About time! Thanks guys. Check out Aladdin Sane next! There is David Bowie and then there is everyone else. He always challenges us....
Definitely would love to see a full album reaction to ‘the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars’
In terms of next song Life on mars, Rick Wakeman from Yes on piano
