- The ICON A5 is an amphibious light-sport aircraft designed and manufactured in the United States. The first production aircraft took to the skies and made its public debut in 2014 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.
It reinvented recreational flying, allowing people to experience the joy of flight like never before. Sport flying with the A5 was designed for pilots who primarily fly for fun - it's simple to fly, lightweight, and has low operating costs.
But things changed after 2017!

Yep, hardly failing. Production numbers are up year over year. The airframe is unbelievably safe. Let’s hope MOSAIC rule changes bring more good things to the design.

I am very close to buying a icon a5. I am currently building a 62' aluminum sailing catamaran and I would love to have a rear lifting platform to store the plane on and lift it in and out of the water. The current stage of construction I am at is early enough where I can make modifications to the hulls and re design the lifting platform.
you should actually start a youtube channel about this endeavor, I would totally subscribe and many more people would love to see how the project develops and unfolds. Good luck

Human error
Sounds very dodgy to break up like that. Looks a bit weak in that area. Perhaps they should use fiberglass giga casting to help reduce cost. The current production lines looks extremely labour intensive.
I would like to see how the ballist for the fuel tank are setup because it seems like they struggle when landing and taking off in the water. Fuel sloshing back and forward would cause those issues.

Interesting. I have long done extreme adventure sports, which are by definition (and in reality) dangerous. An 'adventure sport airplane' would also be more dangerous... not because of the plane, but because of the adventurous nature of its use. In most all sports, the equipment almost never fails. Almost never ever. Good to know, as I am interested in one of these babies. Very cool!
These crashes do not have anything in common other than the person operating it.
In reality is ONLY that person's Judgement and experience. the plane gets the blame!
The creator and designer getting killed by his own plane he was selling was probally the most reputation damaging.
This entire question is rediculous. My only concern was how does a plane costing $180 K jump to $400 K. The mismanagement is staggering. a few drunk pilots crashing, cmon. Maybe I was in the airforce too long. but the premise is beyong stupid.
I think it was mostly pilot error. The ICON A5 is one of the most interesting small aircraft because it can also land, which has to be learned. 👍 Its capabilities may lead to cocky pilot behavior. Unfortunately, seaplanes are banned on our lakes in my country (too much boat traffic). 🤔
Many boaters are Idiots, I have had some stop in my water landing path to see me closer!!! Unbelievable!
I would say the "fun n the sun" way they were marketed to consumers if they actually remained affordable (150k ish) would have caused even more crashes. The type of new "pilots" they would attract with disposable income don't seem to typically take aviation seriously enough, definitely a disaster.

The Authorities are the problem, with a Real Amphibian airplane, you need a pilotos licence first and then a Seaplane Rating.. these new Toys only require a recreatonal license.. thus the lack of pilot's experience !
Problem is the "easy to fly" and people get too relaxed. It happens on all recreational toys.

This plane was actually stolen at lista airport, in norway, the two drunk men had never flown before, the plane was dangrously close to ground and they were messing with trotthle. In the end the plane stalled and went in a dive, the nose hit the ground and the plane flipped over, luckily they both survived, they Are now being questioned at police station.
Great airplane. Stupid pilots. Halliday, no matter how many hours he had, was a hotdogger, and likely high. Either way, the way he flew that day showed how well the airplane maneuvers. Halliday just pushed it stupidly too far. The test pilot? Flying up a boxed canyon. Genius. Stop blaming the aircraft.

It's not the planes fault as the video stated the people flying it made mistakes. But if you cant fly to standard. Dont buy any plane

Remember the Icon Buyer order specifically states you do not own the aircraft. Be very careful buying a A5.
