Hi from Australia. Following for the ST journey. As a non-religious guy, it's been interesting to see your take on their music. Their music is inherintly spiritual, but in their own way with their own mythology. But as you pointed out with the garden and the apple with The Offering, they allude to a Christian source material with much of the metaphors and imagery. I've had my more religious parents and some friends feel like the band is 'satanic' because of their look and sound. It's a ridiculous, shallow take on something different that is a man laying out his broken heart through anonymity, community and musical genius. Not everything amalgamating traditional symbolism and lore into something new is 'evil', and I'm glad to see someone as yourself vibe with it. Gives me hope that my friends of faith (which I don't personally share, but respect) can still get down with the new era of cross-genre, cross-influence music.
If you want genre switch-ups, I 100% recommend The Dear Hunter (different from the band Deerhunter). I love love love Sleep Token, but when it comes to stylistic variety while still maintaining a musical identity, TDH have them beat. They have a 36 song, 2.5 hour long project called The Color Spectrum, where they have 4 songs each for the seven colors of the rainbow as well as black and white, and they wrote songs in styles that fit the mood of each color.
You asked what band can switch genres in a song like Sleep Token and I immediately think of Ronnie Radke of Falling In Reverse. That’s the only one I can think of that does that.
