    On Tiki culture in the US. I'm a big-time Chinese food person. I've sought out Chinese food in New York (upstate), Montreal, Paris, and London. The very best Chinese food of my life was at a kitschy Tiki restaurant in a sketchy motor lodge across the parking lot from a Wal-Mart in Rogers, Arkansas.

    Whappatooly! In college they had Whappatooly parties. They would have a large trashcan lined with a new garbage bag. They would dump in a couple large bags of ice and a bunch of various kinds of fruit & melon. Then, to enter the party, you had to bring a bottle of something and dump it in. At a certain time, they would stir it with a big wooden oar and then start serving.

    • @chunkymurps
      @chunkymurps 4 роки тому

      How could you have never made one with mint? That and a spent lime shell is it's traditional garnish. And drinking through a straw placed within a big bunch of mint is part of the experience.

    • @aneophyte1199
      @aneophyte1199 4 роки тому

      @@chunkymurps I've never made one myself, but when ordering a mai tai, we usually get it with a pineapple wedge or orange slice.

    • @patrickcannady2066
      @patrickcannady2066 4 роки тому

      @@aneophyte1199 that's not a Mai Tai. The bar might call it a Mai Tai, but it isn't. Mai Tai ingredients like aged rum, orgeat syrup, and fresh mint are expensive for bars to keep in stock, so somewhere along the way the original recipe was compromised for cost saving reasons. Any combination of rum and fruit juices is liable to be called a Mai Tai these days, unless you're at a bar that makes a point of sticking to the original recipe.

    Great that you used the traditional recipe and not one of these dive bar Mai Tais, which are a whole different thing. If you've got the time, you could try making your own orgeat, it's fairly simple and you'll notice a huge difference compared to the bottles stuff.

    • @Quintinohthree

      Traditional recipe would be Wray & Nephew 17 and no other rum, but that hasn't been made for ages and the bottles that exist are ridiculously expensive. Appleton is from the same house, so a worthy substitute.

    • @chunkymurps
      @chunkymurps 4 роки тому +2

      Thankfully she didn't use any pineapple juice or grenadine but it still wasn't the traditional recipe. There's no float at all in a traditional Mai Tia nor a white rum. The only white rum she should have used would have been an agricole. Two shots of the Appletons would have made a perfectly acceptable Mai Tai, or one of that and the Goslings if you HAD to use two rums (with what she had on hand).

    So, I used the Meadshine (since distilled mead is technically a rum) and Kraken, and floated just a touch of Kraken (because I was scared it would be too much). It's quite nice. The float actually worked well. I tasted it before and after floating, and the float rounds it out nicely.

      Typically, you would use 15ml of lime juice, as well. I forgot, so I reshook it with about 10 oz, since I had already drank some.

    Hello Ciara,
    The best Mai Tai recipe is Trader Vic's 1944 Mai Tai recipe. He's the creator of the drink. If you want to start making delicious Tiki drinks I suggest you look into Beach Bum Berry's book "Sipping Safari" or Martin Cate's book "Smugglers Cove " these two people have brought back Tiki cocktails by researching the founders of Tiki Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic. Here's Trader Vic's 1944 recipe.
    1 oz. Dark Jamaican Rum
    1 oz. Martinique Rum
    (Or 2 oz. Denizen's 8 year blended Rum)
    3/4 oz. Fresh Lime juice
    1/2 oz. Curacao
    1/4 oz. Orgeat
    1/4 oz. Sugar Cane Syrup
    Garnish with a spent lime and fresh mint
    Cheers!!! Salud!!!

      Great recommendations! And thanks for sharing the recipe :) The 1944 recipe is actually 2 oz aged Jamaican rum. Non-Jamaican rum wasn't incorporated until the 3rd or 4th iteration of the drink (in the mid-'50s), and the Martinique rum that Vic had access to then was nothing like the Martinique rums of today. So a good pot still or blended Jamaican (or Denizen 8 for the mid-'50s version) is still the best bet :)

    This format is FUCKING AMAZING. It reminds me of "the hot ones" challenge where there is an interview and they try hot sauces. You are very bright and energetic as an interviewer. You should do more videos where you interview people and have them help you make drinks. 10/10

    Hey Ciara, If you're interested in making more authentic Tiki drinks then check out the drink recipes from Martin Cate's drink and tiki culture book, Smugglers Cove, and any of the several drink recipe books from Beach Bum Berry. These guys did serious research and Beach Bum Berry decoded s lot of the original recipes which were highly guarded. Contrary to popular believe, the original tiki drinks weren't overly sweet and weak but were on the strong alcohol content side which I think you would like.
