Hey Richard, I've watched a couple of videos about this keyboard, but yours was by far the most comprehensive, informative and droll. It's a metronome! Thanks, I learned a lot, and laughed a lot. That's how all videos should be.
Richard, thanks for the great review of the Alesis concert 88-key digital piano. The only video review I could find. I decided to get one for myself and look forward to its arrival. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience!!!
No problem! I was really hunting for one when I first bought it and I realized there wasn't one so I decided to make it myself. I'm glad that I'm able to make other peoples purchases more informed and give them a better experience!
For the first time in my life I'll be buying and attempting to learn an instrument. I have all the time in the world to learn since we just went into quarantine again. Looking at all the options out there was daunting, and I was wondering if I should even bother. But I found this one which looked good and only slightly out of my price range. I still wasn't sure.. until I found this review. This is the one I'm gonna get. Bloody legend mate, thanks for the help!
Thank you so much for this review. You speak so clearly and get straight to the point. My old Casio HT-3000 broke and I might be able to replace it with this one!
Just bought this piano as a Xmas gift for my daughter to replace her 61 key Yamaha she’s been looking to upgrade from. This will be the first video I show her so she gets a sense of its capabilities. Thanks
Thanks for the full review ! I played on wooden pianos for years when I was younger but I had to stop a couple of years ago when I moved out of my parent's place, I want to get back to it and I think this piano could be good ! Not too expensive as well so I think I'll go for this one and eventually move to my beloved Roland FP10 !
Thank you, this was great. I just got this piano and found your video to be extremely helpful in seeing what different functions do. I play guitar and ukulele but am brand new to piano and am looking forward to learning!
Hello This review is great, I just want to buy a piano for beginners, because I want to learn to play it and your review helped me to choose this one Wonderful review, thank you 🙂
Great review. I’m definitely adding this one to my short list. However, I’m looking for a keyboard that’s more professional and is more realistic in touch.
Thanks for your awesome review, I was waiting to hear your comments regarding this model and they were very useful and detailed. I just starting taking piano lessons and would like to upgrade from a Yamaha PSR-e253 keyboard to a Digital Piano. I`ve been considering the Alesis Recital Pro 88 however it only has weighted keys and not GHS action as the higher end Yamaha/Casio/Roland Digital Pianos do. Will this detail affect my development of technique? Please let me know your thoughts on this matter.
Alesis markets their Recital Pro as having Hammer Action keys which is similar to the GHS Action on the Yamaha keyboards in that they both aim to mimic a true acoustic piano. With that in mind I believe that, as long as you make sure you exercise proper technique when first developing your skills, either would be great choices (especially since the GHS system is meant more for beginners both would be great for learning as well). Hope that helped!
I don't know too much about those two pianos but from the admittedly limited research I did they seem to be really solid instruments that would suit most purposes and includes some features that comparably priced keyboards may not have
I want something to use with my DAW when I want but mostly just to learn and play using piano sounds the most often. I'd rather have a handful of real sounding organs and pianos than 500 cheap effects. Hard to decide in this low price range.
See that was my exact issue theres tons of instruments in this range with hundred of sounds you'll never use but I ended up with this one that only has a handful because I liked the sound of the piano the best plus the full sized keyboard is a very welcomed feature
Great video man, I just bought a Roland Go Keys and I'm really digging it, but after finding out about this one I'm not really sure if I should reconsider... which one would you say is overall better?
It depends on your purposes for the instrument. From my (admittedly short) research it seems like the Roland GO:KEYS are non weighted which isn't great if you're wanted to emulate the feeling of a real piano as well as only having 61 keys vs the 88 of the Alesis. However the Alesis does not have the bluetooth capabilities of the Roland nor does it have any kind of performance pads, pitch bend, or modulation capabilities. Overall, I would say the Alesis has more room to grow into in the long term for those looking to learn the piano but the Roland GO:KEYS may have more value for those looking to start creating music with the aid of DAW. I use the Alesis mainly for traditional piano playing and have other controllers for music production.
Congratulations for your video. My 2 questions are: 1. Are the keys full sized like piano keys? Or a bit smaller like keyboard keys? 2. Does it has a local control off, so I can hear only my DAW from its speakers?
Yes the keys are full sized and I'm not too familiar with local control but the volume knob does go all the way to fully silent so when I'm using this keyboard as a MIDI controller I just turn the volume all the way down
Thanks for the video! I just subscribed:) I'm thinking about buying this piano on Sweetwater. Just one question... does the included sustain pedal make a loud/noticeable clicking sound when pressed?
So I just went ahead and ordered this piano from Sweetwater based on your review! The sales app sent me an email afterwards, asking who referred me to them - I linked him to your video 😊
At 0:42 you mention that the keys are "velocity sensitive" and that you can "dynamic on them". You said you'd talk about adjusting the sensitivity later but I didn't see anything about that in the rest of the video. Could you please explain what you mean by velocity sensitive and being dynamic on the keys? I just ordered one based on your review so I can learn to play so thanks for your help.
Dynamics in music is the volume that you're playing at. These range from fortissimo (really loud) to pianissimo (really quiet). Usually these volume levels are marked on the music that is being played. Dynamics are a vital part of the ability for the performer to play expressively and this keyboard has the ability to play dynamics by pressing harder or softer on the keys (This is what is meant by velocity sensitive). I hope this helped you and thanks for watching the video!
The Alesis Recital features 5 sounds and the Concert has 10, The Recital does not come with a pedal and the Concert does include one when you purchase. Those seem to be the only differences I could find. Overall, the two instruments are incredibly similar so I believe that if you were to choose between the two the Concert is the better option because of the 5 extra sounds and the included sustain pedal. From what it seems, the Concert looks like it is intended to replace the Recital but I don't know for sure. Hope this helps!
I would still pick the Alesis Concert over the Recital because they are incredibly similar but they have small differences liekthe Concert comes with a sustain pedal and a greater number of voices to play with. The Concert also seems to have more features than the Donner while still being in the same price range so I would still pick the Concert over the Donner as well :)
After listening to demos of all of them its really hard to pick which is best, they all sound really good and it seems like theres no bad option between the three of them
Not directly no, In order to TalkBox you'll need a synthesizer with a bright sound full of harmonics. Something like the Korg MicroKorg or the Novation MiniNova would be better for talk boxing purposes. I have a whole video on my channel about the TalkBox you could check out :)
They make some slight sound but not enough for me to say its distracting or an issue. It's mostly just the mechanical sound from the semi weighted system and its very subtle, at least on my keyboard
I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem. Mine has a few keys that makes springy sounds and they can be heard when I record videos. Have only had it for a couple weeks 😔
Honestly I still use the rinky dink one that I had in childhood and its able to support the weight just fine so as long as it's sturdy I believe you'll have no issues
This keyboard is nice but the Alesis DG8(which may be a little before your time), blows every one of today's Alesis boards away, none of today's alesis boards can compare
The Alesis Concert does have transpose settings, if you press the Lesson and Metronome buttons at the same time you enter Advanced Settings mode and the manual will tell you which piano keys to press to transpose keys up or down :)
I've never heard the Recital so I can't speak on it fully, but I can say that the Concert has great sounds built in and has more sounds than the Recital
That sounds like it could be a manufacturing error potentially? Contacting the company directly may be the best course of action of you could take so you could get help right from the source

Otherwise, assuming that you have the cable plugged all the way in the port, then sustain pedals should be simply plug and play

I would absolutely agree with that!

Yeah! There's a 1/4 inch headphone jack in the back
Do you have any issues like some of the keys making squeaky/springy noises?
Not really actually once I started using it the springy sound went away
How's the strings voice? I really want one with a good strings voice because I'm really into violin. Hopefully there's a saxophone voice in there too haha
All of the sounds are pretty good but the strings are a string sections and not just a violin so timbres will change as you go through the octaves and there's no saxophone sound with this piano sadly enough

The Alesis Concert has semi weighted keys. So not quite hammer action but heavier than a synth action keyboard

And what do you think about the piano sound quality on this alesis ?
I'm famously picky with sounds among my friend group and I've come to really enjoy the sound quality from this piano its full and rich and obvious it cant fully compare to an acoustic piano but for the price point I believe these sounds are quality
Ok, thank you !!!
