Wow! The fact that those kid’s English is that good without their parents speaking it, and without living in a English speaking country is absolutely amazing.

Dedication and fun
I grew up in a similar environment but I may not be as good as these two kids since I bought a computer and got access to the internet in middle school. My parents don't speak any English at all though my mom can understand English. So I started watching videos of English youtubers and listening to English music pretty late as compared to these guys. Also in order to improve I used to talk to myself in English all the time. That also helped somewhat.
when I was in the elementary school my english was not like those kid's they're amazing and with that American accent LoL GREAT 👍

I wonder if most of the audience watching this understands how cool and impressive those two kids were. I’ve been teaching English in Elementary schools and junior high schools in Japan for over 20 years and I haven’t had any students who can speak like that- except for a FEW cases with kids who’ve come back from living abroad with their families. So… it was a cool interview, but maybe not for the reasons that most people are thinking. (Don’t assume these kids are representative of ‘typical’ Japanese kids!)
That said, their parents are awesome and I want more Japanese parents and teachers to see this video to understand how language learning really works!

Jordan, I'm an American high school French teacher with 2 degrees in French who has lived and worked in France. I TRULY thought that these children were "retournés." Yes, to answer your question. 🙋🏻♂️ I do understand how cool and impressive these two kids are. Their parents MUST speak to them in nothing but North American English at home. They have MAD skills. They sound native. EDIT: I TYPED BEFORE I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO. Parents speak Japanese to them. 😲🙄🤭 6:41
I live in Pakistan and of my cousin's daughter learned English from watching "My little pony" and cocomelon channel and no one spoke to her in English. we usually speak Urdu in our households. I think this will become a norm where kids will be learning different languages just by consuming media. impressive indeed.
HOW IS THEIR PRONUNCIATION SO GOOD?! 😱😱😱 I've been learning English since I were a child too, also music and shows and all that, but I still have a foreigner accent. Those two kids are truly amazing. 👏

@@blacksesamecandies listening and reading. You still have to do some speaking practice. But it's really time spent in listening and reading that can give you that fluency and your own twang.. Also, start young and get immersed in an environment where English is the norm, which these kids did. ESL teacher here.
It was a shock to hear them speaking with perfect American accents, I definitely wasn't expecting it.

His explanation on how they learned English is exactly how it is, kids absorb everything so the earlier you get them watching/listening/reading/speaking in the language and submerged in those cultures the faster they’ll pick up. They even have an American accent even without having studied or travelled abroad
Scientific research has shown that children's brains are wired for language acquisition and that that special ability...that natural ability...basically disappears at around the age of puberty.
adults will absorb everything as well as long as you enjoy what you're watching; probably faster than those kids but minus the perfect accent, it's just no one tries learning that way cause it seems slow
@@owenlogue4634 No,not true. Top scientists have studied language acquisition and have found that children learn languages very easily whereas adults...even very intelligent adults...don't. It's all about brain research.
@@jackfitzpatrick8173: Wrong, it comes down to one thing: the lack of fear from children, and the fear of making mistakes in adults. If you change "avoid mistakes" into "set a goal to make 10,000 mistakes", you'll lose count and therefore remove the only barrier that prevents you from learning like you did when you were a child.
@@5drtfygunjm I worked for years for a Neuropathologist at a world famous hospital. I've held a human brain in my two hands (during a clinical conference). I was exposed to brain scientists daily. I learned a lot.
Obviously,none of that makes me an expert but what you say about "10,000 mistakes" is silly. Talk to brain researchers about language acquisition and get back to us.

It's just human nature
I mean this applies to literally every country, city, state in the world..
NY is a popular destination for people outside and inside the US but to me since i live there it's just the norm.

These kids are amazing. They learned English and speak it so well despite the informal beginnings of learning. It just shows how incredible the power of self-motivated learning can be. We should all learn from this in how to teach and let lessons stick with out students, no matter what the subject is, the language is, or what age people are.

All the stuff is in english (or most of it) and thats how i learned even english lol it never felt like learning english it became like a second mother language.
@FiniksLP very true i wanted really desperately to be updated on a kids show i was watching when i was little and the only way to be ahead of the curve per se was to watch the english episodes so that was what sorta forced me to learn it like you said it eventually became like a second mother tongue

That was an adorable interview. This is my first time seeing an interviewer shows people the perspective of kids and asks them normally like any other adult not just treating them like those cute fluffy kids .

Damn, That's really impressive! English is my second language, but I only remember being a mere B1/B2 level at that age. Not only that, it's how fast, and smooth they switch between languages. I definitely couldn't switch between Dutch and English so easily at that age, even though Dutch and English are way closer to each other than Japanese and English.
Yeah, I thought the same as a Swede. I definitely wasn't that good at their age and Swedish is much more similar to English than Japanese is.

Linguistics state that acquiring languages before the age of 12 will reduce accents drastically. Clearly those young guys learned English before age 12.
Takeshii has an accent but I'm sure his English is better than the Japanese of those who mentioned his accent.
Omg, these kids sound like they grew up in the U.S.! Amazing. Great parents for supporting this type of learning. Knowing another language is so valuable!
These young men are incredibly well spoken in both English and Japanese and come across as incredibly intelligent! I can tell you from first hand experience that level of openness and language skill (especially the English) is very rare in Japan.
As an American, they both sound native to me when speaking English. Sota's answer at 6:50 really shows how comfortable he is with casual conversation, especially using things like "you know", "I mean", "like", "uhh", etc.
Right? Like, there's a difference between being fluent and sounding native, and these kids could've fooled me (also an American). If they'd only spoken in English and hadn't mentioned it, I would've assumed they were brought up in the United States by American parents and I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Major props to their parents. o.o
The middle kid sounds like my pale-ass little brother. It's gotta be the UA-cam gaming and Minecraft.
英語上手すぎる！i agree that consuming entertainment on your target language is a very good way of learning, i've been watching and listening to english movies and musics since i was a little child and it really helped me to be better at English than others. But still these kids are on different level!!
Same here. I've been consuming English media since I was a kid, to the point that I would be able to tell if someone else's English sounded wrong just from listening. Of course that detection is still flawed cuz I didn't properly learn grammar yet but I do think it's kinda impressive if I do say so myself.
Context. I'm not a native English speaker, the English of the majority of the people in my community wasn't that great either.

As an online tutor for Japanese people, I must say their English is impressive!! 😮 I’ve met a lot of Japanese of different ages and most of them are struggling in pronouncing R and L, S and SH, TH sounds. But these kids are amazing! Mostly, it’s the parents choice of enrolling them to English conversation schools. Some students don’t enjoy it but I’m glad to see that these boys love learning English. Also, their parents are probably well-traveled and exposed to different culture that’s why they also wanted their children to be the same.
It’s very interesting learning about other school education ways. Some schools are *10 hours long* and some are only *7 or 6* very cool!

Those kids are great. Very comfortable on camera, spoke extremely fluent English. I wouldn't have guessed that they don't have a foreign parent. All the best to them in their future.
I've been learning Japanese for about a year now. what those two children said hit me so hard "it wasn't like learning, it was more like playing..." maybe I shouldn't stress myself to hard and just enjoy learning Japanese. Thank you for this video, I've found new inspiration.
Keep consuming Japanese content while you’re learning and just always listen for words you’ve learned. If you recognize the word but don’t remember exactly what it means go back and look it up. Keep repeating things to yourself throughout the day, have fun making little sentences up too. It will all add up over time, I’m just now getting to that stage. I find myself picking up things now before I actually get to them in the website that I am (mainly) learning through.
WHAT?? I’ve seen any japanese kids talking so fluently in english!! Just wow!! They have so much confidence!!! I litreally drop my jaw when i saw them speaking english!!!

This is definitely my favorite interview you’ve done so far. The two kids were super natural interviewees and after watching your other videos I was blown away by their English. I wonder if other kids around their age are just as good or if they are an anomaly. Keep up the good work Takashi!

OMG, Takashii-san!! This video is great. So interesting to learn about this aspect of Japanese life. I love hearing how they help out at school. These two are so cute, sweet and smart! 😍 Their English is amazing and gives me hope as I learn Japanese. I think I need to chill and just have fun with it. I also think I need to put down my Kanji flashcards, pick up a pen and start writing and writing and writing. I wish I had a teacher who would draw Charlie Brown on my paper when I do well. 😊
I live in Germany and it's amazing to see that these kids entire school schedule is exactly the same as mine was apart from my school starting at 8:00. Like, I also would get up at 6:30 and we also have 45 minutes class and 5 minutes breaks, it's all the same

I'm from Bangladesh and one of my students(9 y/o) also said that she wants to visit Egypt.I think kids love Egypt because of all the stories of it.

It's funny that it seems that the United States is still a trend among the japanese.. at least in the videos I watch on youtube, it seems that the japanese people still have the idea that the USA is an "amazing and perfect" country 🤔
As a Brazilian speaking, many of us don't have this idea anymore.

It’s due to the media. American movies, TV shows and even magazines are prevalent in Japan.
I'm Brazilian too! after these years i really lost interest in the USA, but i know there are very beautiful places there, one day i have to see with my eyes how the place really is without any kind of media influence.
@@nemuritori I'd ignore the media, every country has its ups and downs, many countries get portrayed as worse. As a native from the USA, I can tell you I have gone 21+ years without experiencing one violent thing, and I've lived in the 3 most dangerous cities in America, never even seen a gun pulled on anyone. It's very safe here, as long as you make "smart" decisions just like you would be anywhere, you'll be fine.

I am BLOWN away!!! These boys are going places. When he said "we didn't think we were learning" it reminded me of my days learning Japanese from anime in middle school 🥺💗 it's always best when it's a hobby! That way it never feels like a chore 🥰
One take from the kids that I can really relate with about learning English, 'It's not like learning, it's more like playing'. They are INTERESTED in English, that's not teachable (hence why other kids find it difficult to master English). I'm not amazing in English but compared to my peers, they consider me above average. You won't be good at something if you don't have the motivation to do it.

Their accent is too good to be self-taught… I’m so impressed.. i mean im French so I learnt English mostly at school but my own interest really made me speak it per se. However I wasn’t near as comfortable at speaking it as them lol. Same with my Japanese.. I have a master degree in Japanese language and sociology and still if I didn’t learn it by myself beside taking classes, I wouldn’t be comfortable at all. Studying one year in a Japanese university really was what set it off 😬

my son went to japanese school in the UK on a saturday morning, he and his whole class passed japanese GCSE a year early, the japanese really know how to teach, and there should be more crossover between UK schools (my son had a scholarship to a private school - whitgift foundation). what i find amusing is that my son's written english, his handwriting is spidery and frankly weird, but his written japanese always looks like it could have been printed, it's perfect.
I was a language major in college. I can't believe how well these kids spoke English! Especially considering they don't speak it at home. Really, this was beyond amazing. And it will have a huge positive impact on their lives.

Yeah I feel like kids are setting smarter. These days 4,5 year olds use smartphone and internet like they were born with it .

These two english ability is phenomenal. Here's my view/preconceptions from beginning to end on their english level:
Beginning:
These two have got to be Japanese-Americans or studied in an eng speaking country when they were little and then their parents moved back to Japan
Middle:
Wait, maybe they go to an intl school where language is prominent
End:
They also have a youtube channel and learned english just by playing and having fun?! I am so subscribing!

Internet in gerneral gets a lot of hate, but honestly, this video is a huge positive for it. We're all so united now that even children who live in totally different countries that speak completely different languages are able to communicate because they grew up in an age where lack of knowledge is simply due to a lack of just existing. My 12 year old nephew has a best friend in Sweden that he only talks to on Playstation... We live in Arizona.

I’m gonna be entirely honest.. I genuinely thought these 2 boys had previously lived in America due to their English. Being able to get that fluent without being in an a whole English speaking country is crazy.. and the thick American-like accent is so cute, lol.
