About Active Duty Outdoors:
I started this channel to prove to my son that I could get to 1000 subscribers...check! I am was an Active Duty Air Force member with over 23 years of service and now retired. My career has brought me to some awesome locations that I was able to call home, from the Rocky Mountains to the Swamps of South Georgia and everywhere in between! After retiring we moved to Navarre Florida where I can fish right out my back door...almost. My family and I have a strong passion for the outdoors from hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, to SCUBA diving and spearfishing. Where will we go next?
We crushed 5,000 subscribers!! Thank you to all of you who have clicked the subscribe button, you all are AWESOME!

the more you talk about how good lion fish are, the more I want fish taco's :)
😂. They do make some awesome fish tacos!!
@@ActiveDutyOutdoorsI’ve only found Lionfish on a menu once.
@@slider903 that’s one of the issues we are trying to fix. The more we can convince restaurants to add them to their menu the higher the demand will be.
i like all of it and your saving the reef as well, doing a great job.
Thank you! Just went out and did again today!
Good job! These fish do a lot of damage on the reef
Thank you! It is fun to take them out.
Keep up the the fantastic work you are doing 👏
Its nice to see people who have not fully perfected this yet. I plan on a few trips down to Florida this summer to hunt (never had done it before but need to jump in somewhere. Would love to meet up with a group!
Everyone says it’s super easy…and it may be after a few trips, lol. What part of Florida are you heading to? We go out fairly often with Shark Quest Dive Center out of Destin.
Hey look it’s me. I’m watching your video and commenting.
Hey, thanks!
Great video... thanks for sharing
For sure! Thanks for watching!
Nice! This was an absolute pleasure to watch. Are the waters there really that murky?
Thank you! Sometimes, especially towards the end of summer the visibility gets kinda crappy.
Rob from ACTIVE DUTY OUTDOORS puts out YET ANOTHER VIDEO that is EASILY WORTHY OF MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF VIEWS! Upon watching this video I have learned things about the lion fish that many men could only hope & dream of learning one day! I hope to catch that Goliath grouper! & I look forward to watching your miss Louise dive! I actually use to kayak fish for red snapper on that wreck!
Thanks buddy!! It would be an easy wreck to get to on the kayaks. Not far out at all.
Hi Mark, How are you doing? Are you going to the Emerald Coast tournament in May?
@@Lionfish-Scuba-Fishing-Travel I will be there but only as a volunteer to teach this year. Next year I will be a participant.
Good Video, Very Informative for those not in the know. A shorter spear definitely works better on top but not as good underneath the barge. Gary at Gulf Divers in Orange Beach makes the best ones. Also you cut the pectorals off and indicated they have spines, but they don’t.
I ended up getting a shorter spear. Hopefully it will work out, though the long one was nice to reach inside. Correct, the pectoral does not, I meant the pelvic.
Cracking me up. You must of been drinking when you did the voiceover. 😂🥃
Ok…maybe a class of bourbon.
My brother in law had a Lion Fish in Calufornia.
They are beautiful fish. If I had a salt water tank I would have one.
Great vid! Looks like fun
Thank you! It is a blast and really gives diving a purpose. I love it.
Great job! How many did you get? Also, how deep is the barge! There is not much meat after you fillet them.
I ended up with 8 of them. Would have been more if I would have not lost a few. The little ones do not give much for fillets, the bigger ones have way more meat. The barge was about 78 feet to the sand and about 60 feet to the deck.
Watching and commenting! I wanna party with you man!
Hell yeah! Thanks for watching and come on and let’s do some diving.
Whats your suggestion in the Pensacola area to get the gear? I really want to get started lion fishing.
Shark Quest across from the Gulf Breeze Zoo. They are awesome and have everything you’ll need. I am also an affiliate with Zookeeper (just recently) if you get your Lionfish gear from them use the code: ADOutdoors it will give you 10% off.
Just moved to Pensacola area recently. You know anywhere you can spear these guys in shallower water (maybe 15-30 ft)?….somewhere that might be a little easier for freediving
I just moved down here this past September and am still learning the area. I am still trying new areas and haven’t found any shallow spots with them yet. I am thinking about diving the Navarre Reefs to see if they have any on them.
Turbo fins are fun bro. Take care and "glide".❤ Dont forget your anti venom shot in the med kit.... glider on the currents!
I do like these fins!
Yeah I used to dive with those, you need them when all the air compresses out of your suit and sea pressure makes you weigh heavier after 10 meters Hey. I got a Lionfish Predator update from the Caribbean Apparently Groper, Sharks and Moray eels will eat them. I should think they will significantly increase in numbers around your Lionfish Parks🤘😊 Rock on Bro. Lionfish prey could eat them all eventually. I'd watch the sharks, octopus, Eel and Grouper they should get plenty of food to increase their numbers. That Lionfish problem could evolve into a better Marine life explosion. So I would let them be eaten by these other species and get in the Florida food chain yea.
Just dove there a little over a month ago, and only saw three lionfish, guess that lionfish tournament is working.
I would like to think so. Someday we go out and barely see any and other days they are everywhere.
im gon to destin in june. is there anywhere near shore i can kayak to or dive from shore for lion fish or mangroves etc.? do they hang out around the jetties/is the water near the beach diveable?
Kayak to and dive, yes. The lionfish though are a little further out than what I would take a kayak to. Destin has some really good artificial reefs that they deployed just for kayakers. Navarre has some as well. Just look up Destin near shore fishing reefs and it should give you a bunch of numbers.
How far from the fish do do release the spear? Thanks
That depends on the length of the spear. I have shot them point blank and I have shot them from about 3-4 feet away depending if they are really tucked into structure.
How can I schedule for spare fishing and to get the prices? Thanks so much and I will be in the last week of December… nice video.
Thank you. Hit up Shark Quest. They are based in gulf breeze but their boat goes out of Destin. They will get you on some Lionfish. Tell them Active Duty Outdoors sent you.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors
Thanks so much, buddy.
Lived in Destin, FL, lovely place. Nice to know one can fish these invasive and tasty bastards there.
Oh yeah, they are pretty thick here now.
I would love to do this, but I'm so creeped out by diving. I have no problem with land critters, but there's something about diving that freaks me out
It is a fear that a lot of people have. It gets easier with good training and practice.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors I've gone snorkeling in a bunch of places, but always clear water like the Caribbean,Hawaii. I went on a shark snorkeling trip off the Bahamas and the reef tips instead of being at the bottom 40 feet down immediately came up and swarmed us. I have pictures I took with them a couple of feet away, I wasn't scared of them, but the ship mates started screaming at us to come back. But the thought of diving down into any deep water, or water that isn't crystal clear does freak me out. It's not the animals, it's the lack of visibility, mostly. I see guys diving like you and have all the respect, but i would need to go slow. I could do it under the right conditions. Did a night snorkel with mantas off Hawaii at night and that was legendary. Still had that feeling like something was going to come up and bite my leg though, lol.
Great info
Thank you!
Good job!
Thank you!!
Camera angle needs to be adjusted so we can see what you're doing better (the upper part of the viewing area was cut off).
I noticed that in this video. I have adjusted it now and record in wider view. Hopefully the newer videos look better.
Like your commentary
Thank you!
Get in my ZOOKEEPER
Lol, no. Just trying not to be monotone. A Zookeeper is actually the name of container for Lionfish.
nice video😄
Thank you.
love the videos, camera work during the cleaning and filleting needs some work!!!
You’re not wrong about that. I need to set up a few cameras to get better angles.
Careful bro two daysin bed paralysed if they "brush you".❤ training sharks and an army of biologists, you'll save some sting-victims before it happens and check with your local nurses - any anti venom ready to go. You might need a shot in the med kit. Love it.Dive safe.❤
Yeah, these things are no joke.
Get in my zookeeper 😂
😂!! It’s my go to saying now. 😂
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors love it!
Why its called lion fish and not tiger fish, they have stripes like a tiger
That is true. That’s a good question
Is it other lion fish? Or at birth or their eggs. Yes their eggs have a predator.👍
Yes, Lionfish will eat baby Lionfish.
I love seafood. It's 😋
Yes it is! And Lionfish are my favorite.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors I have had shark n gater n crawfish. All so tasty. I miss the Cajun restaurant back in my home city. I ordered the same thing each time n loved it. Crawfish Etufee. Side of red beans n rice. Cold Pepsi or Coke zero w a lemon wedge. Oh,yeah! Need an adult bib tho. Messy good. Then there r the gater fingers,n mean green hot wings. Buzzard Billies Flying Carp Cafe in LaCrosse Wisconsin on 4th st. If I get back home,I am so there! U r doing a great thing n eating it too. Lol. Have a great weekend n keep up the good eating.
@markcraig4036 that all sounds awesome! I ate a lot of Cajun food in Louisiana and gator tails when I was stationed in Georgia.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors Ah,u r a veteran too. Semper Fi and HOOAAH brotherman. I did 4 yrs Army. '89-'93.
Awesome! I just retired last year after 23 years in the Air Force. And just as I left my son took my place.
They sound dangerous but they must belong somewhere.
South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
The lion fish has natural habitats around weed, sand and jetties. So the other fish species could be the natural predator we haven't seen, maybe an eel or an octopus. Research is needed.😎
They are native the the South Pacific and Indian Ocean where they do have natural predators. In our oceans nothing has been known to eat them. They are prolific breeders laying millions of eggs everyday, some eggs are eaten but not nearly enough to make a difference.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors I know the are not out of control in West Oz. That's where I saw them living under the Jetty. There are pretty high numbers of carnivorous fish there. So because of the habitat you have a problem in I think an introduction of a lot of artificial reef and the sea grasses would be interesting. It could be a species will adapt if given a home...really enjoyed your diving clips anyway. Thankyou and I'm pretty interested in designing an artificial reef habitat for a lionfish predator with you.
Reef hunters. Be Safe!
@@Anthony-fd3lz thank you! It would be interesting to design a habitat that would be inviting to a predator species that would target Lionfish.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors How did you go? Was there some other creature of the sea feeding on the eggs?
@@Anthony-fd3lz "The lion fish has natural habitats around weed, sand and jetties." ? I have rarely read such nonsense... You also contradict yourself, first you talk nonsense that lionfish live around jetties, sand and weed, then you want to introduce artificial reefs. Oh man... Lionfish are inhabitants of coral reefs and rocky reefs or similar habitats (ship wrecks for example) where they hide during the day and hunt for prey at night. And this applies to both, the species Pterois miles and the species Pterois volitans - both already exist as invasive species in the western Atlantic and the Caribbean, Pterois miles as an invasive species also with us in the eastern Mediterranean, immigrated via the Suez Canal from its natural habitat, the Red Sea. Groupers, morays and also sharks are natural predators of lionfish in their natural habitats. In habitats where these predators (there are also grouper, moray eel and shark species in the Caribbean) do not know lionfish as prey, they will not hunt them for the time being. To do this, they must first get to know lionfish as prey.
Talk less and focus, you have too many misses
Thanks for the feedback. You’re definitely not wrong. This was my first attempt at hunting Lionfish, really any spearing. A little bit of a learning curve but I have it down pretty good now.
