- It's no secret that I really love Olivia Newton-John. 1971's "If Not For You" was the first song of hers I ever heard. She also did a lovely version of "Love Song" that had similar guitar work that Jim Croce used on "Time In A Bottle" and really made me take notice. I was with her from that point on.
Just when the cute and pretty voiced Livvy thing seemed to be wear a bit thin, she practically shrieked her way back into my consciousness with her vocals in "Grease". The first time I heard "You're The One That I Want" I did not recognize her and thought it was Marie Osmond. Her fuller sounding voice lent itself well to the beefier music tracks. The sexy transformation from blue eyed blonde nymphet to divine sexpot at the end of the movie signalled a change in Olivia.
Her next LP, "Totally Hot" and the first single, "A Little More Love" came out in the fall of 1978. This harder rocking sound furthered her sex siren call by reaching #3 Pop in December of 1979. The follow up to this one was "Deeper Than The Night" which had a very syncopated arrangement but not really "disco" but peaked at #11 that spring.
I love Olivia Newton-John's voice. So sweet and clear. I love her singing on the soundtrack of Xanadu. She can sing a happy tune as well as a sultry one. I love her versatility in her singing as well as her lyrics. And I also remember dancing to her songs. I always felt happy when I could hit the dance floor with one of her tunes. A happy memory for sure. ❤💙💜💛😊

Her voice is indeed silky smooth and has such marvelous timbre. And speaking of Xanadu, when I saw it for the first time I just couldn’t take my eyes off of the album cover that he had to paint. Actually that happens every time I watch it.

ONJ embraced a more sexy, soft pop-rock image ,
Leading to her early 80s run of pop hits that included
“Physical”, “Twist of Fate”, “Make a Move on Me”, “Xanadu”, “Heart Attack” and “Magic”.
Many of these (including ALML) were written and/or produced by fellow Aussie John Farrar,
who had also written her previous hits “Have you Never Been Mellow” and the rousing “Grease “ duet with John Travolta
“You’re the One that I Want “.
We lost this beloved global icon this week. I'm devastated like many millions of people both men and women. As a 10 year old kid in 1974 I was enchanted by her angelic winsome voice and beautiful girl next door looks. With the advent of Grease ONJ's music pivoted to a more saucy image and style. It just so happened to coincide with my puberty. Part of me has been in love with her ever since. RIP ONJ. Heaven has certainly added to it's angelic choir this week

"A Little More Love," "Deeper Than the Night," "You're the One That I Want," "Make a Move on Me," "Magic," even "Physical" were my favorite Olivia Newton-John songs. I played the black "discs" on a high-fidelity components system in the late 1970s. The sound was awesome, and I had a favorite music format or genre as it may be called, "adult contemporary music. I miss hearing it on the radio. This long version is very good.
So happy I grew up with this music, Olivia is a treasure.

This was my first Olivia Newton John album. I remember telling my sister to go to Crazy Eddie to pick me up this album. She refused cause it was a white girl album. So I got it myself n it was a great album it brings back lot of my teenage memories

As a child, I would buy some black vinyl single records and albums recorded by Black and White performers, my young brothers criticized me for listening to "White boy" music. Fortunately, I left that disposition in 1975 and now I can listen to the music as much as I want and as long as I want, with no one else to critize me.

This is a FIRE performance! It was on the charts forever. So glad to hear that a new generation can appreciate the massive talent that she was, no auto-tune just natural talent! I had the great pleasure of meeting her at a cocktail party 11 years ago. So lovely, so beautiful and so down to earth! RIP to this angel among us, for way too brief a time, but not before selling 100 MILLION albums!

John does not get enough credit for transforming Olivia from her country-girl persona to a superstar. Olivia thrived under his partnership.

ONJ went from a "sweet" country/pop to a more "sultry vixon" singer after G's YTOTIW....much like her "tranformation" in G!! (Much like the BGs going from pop to disco kings after SNF!). In both cases for me I like all of ONJs and the BGs songs no matter how they were claasified!!

There something about Olivia’s voice and music that always makes me feel young. I feel like a young tween when I listen. I adored Xanadu when it came out at a time when people called it a flop but I knew it was fabulous and she was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen and I didn’t care. I just loved her. She was such a special human being. So many women today could learn lessons from ONJ. She was sexy without being whore’ish or tarty. She was glamorous without being pretentious or snobbish. She was charming and sweet yet never boring or prim. She embodied the best and most empowering aspects of femininity. In an age when women have degraded themselves into being overly sexualised and sexualising themselves (apart from evil men doing it) Olivia remains as a supreme example of what it’s like to be elevated yet at the same time, completely normal and natural.

I did not become aware of ONJ until she released If You Love Me (Let Me Know), when that song came across the country music channel on the radio my mother always played, I fell in love with it. I was just entering my teens so it was then that I really started focusing on singers, and later, the radio station played Let Me Be There, so I loved that one two. My mom notices and she bought for me what would be my first ever cassette tape--the album of If You Love Me (Let Me Know), and I played that thing TO DEATH. I did not know what ONJ looked like outside of that one album photo, so when she won the Academy of Country Music Female Vocalist of the year, I did not even recognize her when her video taped acceptance speech was played. Well, not until she started speaking and I realized it was not a commercial. I stuck by ONJ until she appeared in Xanadu, and then started to fade away as she was so cringe-worthy in that film I was embarrassed for her.
And real Olivia's fans are embarrassed for such a disgusting comment and for your lack of good musical taste. 🤡🤡🤡
