    I have to build a project for school. We are designing a sensor that detects people approaching. We will be using a basic breadboard for a prototype so we need one that works with low voltage, what would you recommend?

      Hi Eric,
      Most industrial sensors operate at 24Vdc, but sometimes you can still use them. We have a lot of High School robotics teams that use our sensors all the time. What is your "Low Voltage?" Can you use a sensor that is powered from a 12V supply, but interfaces with your "Low Voltage?" If so, we may be able to help. In particular, check out the photoelectric sensors here: www.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Sensors_-z-_Encoders/Photoelectric_Sensors/DC_Rectangular - a number of those will work (you will want sensors with NPN output).

      Thank you for the reply, the link unfortunately didn't work. 12V should be enough for the prototype, the reason why I ask is because we are trying to make the sensor portable and wearable. Trying to not give out too much information about our designed because if we are successful with our design our school could help us get patents. Thanks again.

    Am amazed with the technology of yours... but what will happen if there was a foam above the liquid level.. how will this technology give us the correct reading? can you explain if possible

      Hi Aravindh, most folks put the sensor in a pipe (called a "standing pipe") that runs to the bottom of the tank. That way the fluid inside the pipe doesn't have any foam and the sensor can easily measure the fluid level.

    We purchased one of your UK1A-EP-0E ultrasonic Proximity Switches and it has a +/- 8 degree beam angle. I have proven the concept that it can replace one of the through beam optical sensors we currently have in place for our automated painting process. The issue is that these sensors are used in an array of 16 sensors that are spaced 2" apart over a string conveyor. My concern is the possibility of cross-talk or interference between sensors set at such close proximity.
    All 16 sensors are set 2" apart, and pointing in the same direction. They are tilted at a 30 degree angle to the plane of the product and the product is irregular, so I suspect the signal reflections might interfere with adjacent sensors.
    I see some vendors discuss various schemes to counter this issue; some being the synchronizing of multiple sensors and another using an interlocked electronic timing method that sequences the staggered firing of each adjacent sensor. Another manufacturer; (IFM) uses "sound tubes" to help reduce interference and cross-talk. What can you tell me about issues with or methods to compensate for sensor cross-talk or interference?
    Added: The reason I am wanting to change to Ultrasonic is because our optical through beam sensors typically read through our white plastic parts and the PLC cannot read when to start spraying in automatic. Hence the operator has to run the paint spray guns in manual, which wastes paint, and sometimes they forget, or are slow to set to manual and then we have quality issues. Cross-talk or interference is one of the reasons I haven't really considered diffuse sensors.

      Hi Steve, You didn't mention is how far the sensors are from the target. That is the primary deciding factor because the detection cone gets larger that farther away the target is. Be careful with trying to time the sensors. The switching frequency on those is only 10 Hz and the startup time is a couple hundred ms - so if you try to switch them faster than a few times a second your results may be unreliable ...
      Seems like an optical solution would work better for this application. I believe AutomationDirect has optical sensors that are specifically designed to handle non-opaque materials ... I'll see if I can find an example and get back to you ... Stay tuned ...

      The distance from the sensor to the product is 200mm on the outside, down to about 70mm at the closest. Additionally: due to slight overspray and general ambient dust, (and due to the general lack of good housekeeping practices in our paint department) I am trying to shy away from retroreflective sensors - anything optical. I think I have found a potential solution to my issues concerning ultrasonic signal cross-talk/interference. Basically taking a hint from IMF, but rather than using a sound tube I plan to use 3/4" heat shrink tubing over the end of the sensor to basically create a reverse funnel to block most signals coming towards each sensor at an angle. I ordered a few more of the UK1A-EP-0E sensors to test this idea.

    Hi, I want to know how to adjust the range of an ultrasonic sensor for PLC. They have a default range but how do I modify that range? Is there any other software or al can be done in the same ladder logic software?

      Hi Jamie, These sensors have a "Teach Button" that allows you to adjust the range. Find the sensor you want to use on the webstore (www.automationdirect.com) and you will see all the documentation on how to do that. It's typically something like: Hold the button until the light flashes to mark one distance and then change the distance and hit the button again. Hope that helps ...

    can i use ultrasonic sensor for detecting liquid under high pressure in steel container ? if yes, which type of ultrasonic sensor should i use?

      Prokash, I have used Ultrasonics in this fashion before, and never had a problem. Our line of ultrasonics are not designed for this operation. Our level sensing ultrasonics are only rated for 30 PSI.

      @ b Any of the diffuse ultrasonic sensors should work for detection but the designer will have to specify required distance, voltage and body style to determine which model of ultrasonic sensor to select. These style sensors have been used on similar projects with success.     If the sensor is fixed along a rope looking down, waiting for a load to come up, would the sensor see the rope even if they are parallel.

      There is a possibility the sensor would see the rope - depends on a lot of factors like rope type, diameter, how close the sensor is to the rope, etc. Without knowing more about your application that is difficult to answer here.     I i wanna see some overview regarding to ultrasonic sensors for robotic hobby (not for industrial purpose). there's such a great difference between these types of approaching.....For example, HC-SR04 is strongly dependent by the type of surfaces, colour, geometry and dimenssions of the target. Much more, it's hardly dependent by the environment conditions, especially by the temperature and light. Neither Ping Parallax ultrasonic sensor isn't so independent of these aspects. I don't say these two sensors aren't able to give good result of the distance measurements, but you need to do a lot of software compensations.....

    I saw some videos on youtube in which they use UDS to create a 2D graph of a Room , can that be achieved with a HCSR04 without any special software (matlab) ?

      @ Noman Sheikh, We are not familiar with testing ultrasonic sensors for 2D or 3D scans of products or rooms. It would depend on the input required from the interface. It would probably require an analog signal vs a discrete "on/off" signal to determine distance and product measurements.     Hi there,
    For a project at uni, I need to incorporate a sensor that will sense if someone is walking/moving/standing within a (approximately) 3 meter radius of the product I am designing. If the sensor picks up on the object, a light in the product will fade in.
    There is no need for the sensor to measure the distance, I just need a sensor that will notice objects within a (+/-) 3 meter radius.
    The sensor needs to be as small as possible, as there isn't that much space in the housing of the product. It also needs to be as cheap as possible (but still a durable sensor, as the product is designed for a public space (outside)) as it is designed for a municipality.
    Would you have any recommendations on which sensor to use? I did search the website, but I am not sure on which outputs to use (e.g.).

      Sounds like you are looking for a 360 degree object detection sensor that is inexpensive and works outdoors. That's a tough requirement. I can't think of anything AutomationDirect has that will fit that application. Suggestion: Do a UA-cam search for "360 degree LIDAR scanner" or "Getting started with LIDAR."

      @@automationdirect Thank you for your answer! I did look into LIDAR, but unfortunately, it seems that certain types could be harmful for the eyes, so I am not sure if that could be used in a public space (though I could look into it further).
      However, instead of radius, I actually meant distance (my bad), so the sensor doesn't necessarily have to pick up a 360 degree view. Would it then be possible to use an ultrasonic proximity sensor?

      @@fennietroost5750 Yes, an ultrasonic sensor would be ideal. The main reason is you want to operate outdoors - and sensor that uses light (like LIDAR) will be susceptible to sunlight, glint, reflections, etc. Which explains why automobiles use ultrasonic for their collision avoidance systems. Beware that ultrasonic sensors don't update very fast (they have to wait for the sound energy to go out and come back) so keep an eye on the specs. Some will be a slow as a few Hz, while some are quite a bit faster. And that will correspond to their detection distance capability.

      Hi Saad, Not sure I understand the question.
      Are you asking which types of Ultrasonic Sensors are like Thermocouples? Thermocouples measure temperature, Ultrasonics measure distance. They are completely different ...

      @@saadulhassansyed9686 Gotcha. Nothign like that. The main thing to watch out for with Ultrasonics is the pulse rate. The longer the distance the slower the pulses (it has to wait for the wound waves to go out and come back) and hence the slower the response time. Other than that, they are all pretty much the same.

    I want to check the level of grease in barrel...it possible by ultrasonic sensor?because grease surface is uneven some grease stick at the sides of the barrel..

      You Can, but it all depends on your setup - how big the barrel is, distance from the sensor etc. Check out this video where we use an ultra sonic sensor to measure the height if water in a barrel: ua-cam.com/video/wdciqTJctKw/v-deo.html It might give you some ideas.       David, Ultrasonic would not be a good detection method for uneven surfaces like grease. The uneven surface would not reflect the sound wave in a manner that would give a good reliable reading. Two methods I have seen that works well is a laser distance sensor or using a flat surface paddle that is connected to a chain that sits on the top of the grease and that paddle becomes the flag for measuring.

      I am using a grease lubrication pump and its capacity is 5 &10kgs..i want to set a low level alarm but i have no idea to set...Thats why i am searching for low level sensors...if you have any idea to set low level alarm please share it

      Just got the answer from the manufacture:
      "The nominal tests performed by us (required by the Standards) have been thought for granting immunity against electromagnetic fields from 80Mhz to 2GHz (3V/m). We cannot grant the correct performances when stronger fields are present."

      @amit Kumar, thanks for the comment. I am assuming you are asking "Do we have an ultrasonic sensors with Dry set of contacts?". We currently, only carry PNP and NPN, which would require a simple relay for a dry set of contacts.       That greatly depends, on the type of materials you are trying to differentiate. Ultrasonic, since using sound wave, does work well in differentiation of solid materials. Typically if you are trying to differentiate solid materials, visual or weight measurement is the more precise method.
