Thanks. Great DIY video. I used your DIY to change the valve cover on my 2011 535i. Took me a while, but your video was a TREMENDOUS help! Keep up the great work!!!
same here... FCP has became my Mentor with working on my f10.
You still driving that?
Just randomly read about FCP Euro and their warranty. Fantastic team, fantastic terms. Just made my first order this week for spark plugs and coils on my n55 (including the torque wrench and socket) - and I didn't even know they did instructionals.
I will recommend them to everyone.
Thanks, FCP Euro.
Great informative video. Straight to the point. Step by step, and leaves no room for failure (unless you're stupid). Oh and best of all....no stupid 1970's porn music
Thanks, John! We're always working on making our DIY's even better!
Just did a spark plug change on a 16' 640 N55, to get to the 5 and 6 plug you need to remove a bracket directly over 5 and 6 that holds two electrical connectors and the big plastic bracket that cradles wires going over the back of the engine to move it to remove the foam insulation as well also required to do 5 and 6. It seems that was done before you started the video. The fasteners on the pax side are a PITA. Could have referenced that.
Dude thanks I’ve spent so long trying to find the other two coils
Yes bro I’m stumped on 5 & 6 cause they don’t even mention them in this video 😂
Thanks for the tip! Just did the same (removed bracket, just the passenger side, and foam on a 2017). Number 6 plug is a real challenge. I ended up using a short extension and a universal joint on the spark plug socket. The universal joint allows you to "fold" everything down into the spark plug well as you have very little vertical clearance.
Is this guy "The Car Life" on youtube? I remember watching your stuff when you had your E39. Pretty dope man!
That's him!
Excellent video, very help full, nice close up images, quality process of making it look decently easy .
John
Thanks, John! Glad you found it helpful!
I know that Spark Plugs has gotten better and last longer due to the "platinum firing tips that dont erode and with the Advancement of Technology , as older standard plugs use to in the 80's that needed to be change fequently. but why is these plugs ( platinum ) the best plugs changed this early, like 60 + thousand miles ?? i have seen them go 2 hundred and 3 hundred thousand in other types ofvehicles, without much erosion or wear on the tip (centre Electrode) so why is BMW Recommend to change them so frequent ??? i guess $$$$$$. any input please ty
Thanks for mentioning the TSB on the corrosion. I have so much, I was worried. It did flake down onto the valves a bit but I blew it out with air. Thought my seals were bad or something but everything looked good and the coils "popped" with pressure taking them out. Weird moisture can get in. New coils seem better protected with rubber though.
Helpful Tips:
- Buy a LOCKING ratchet extension. The first time I tried this, the socket got stuck on the plug and I couldn't get it out. If I had a locking ratchet extension it would have helped.
- spray some P'Blaster on your plugs and let it sit over night, if they're stuck. Mine wouldn't budge at first, but came out after soaking overnight.
Thanks for the video! Super helpful
That is a very cool tip, will buy that.
Just a reminder, BMW has announced that they have replaced all their previous pin type coils (Bosch, Delphi) for their n54 & n55 engines and all their latest vehicle models to to the newest OEM coil manufacturer brand "ELDOR" since 2016!
*** Ignition coil with boot and updated metal sleeve. Made By BMW - Eldor OEM.

how do you know how tight to tension the plugs/what tool do you use to measure tension. also how do you "gap" plugs? sorry, newbie
Hi, Raul. No need to apologize! We're here to help people learn! You use a torque wrench to tighten things to a specific torque setting: www.fcpeuro.com/products/3-8-drive-micrometer-torque-wrench-30-250-in-lbs-gearwrench-85061
Gapping spark plugs is setting the distance between the tip of the spark plug and the electrode, you can lightly tap the end of the plug to close the gap, or use small plyers to open the gap. Properly measuring the gap can be done with a simple tool like this: www.fcpeuro.com/products/spark-plug-gapper-cta-manufacturing-cta-3235
What is the part number for the tube that commonly breaks when attempting to change the plugs?
Nice "professional" video. 100--100 , i was just wondering, at how many kilometers should sparkplugs be changed out on a 2013 bmw x5 35i ,3.0 litre turbo? I know these newer technology sparkplugs can go a couple hundred thousands kilometers before changing, as for my bmw ,are the originals/ the factory installed Bosch r?? or NGK ? ty
@@itschase Bosch it is ty. continue with excellent video 100---100
Nice job guy, I watch a lot of your videos and your quality of work is like dealership style so nice.
Thanks for watching Ravi, Gareth has a plethora of knowledge to share!
Bruh if y’all don’t get my mans some AC or at least a fan! Lol also bring warranty returns to Mesa pleeease 🥺🙏🏽
Get that man some A/C! Lol
Things get hot in here!
The V8 is a bit more difficult. The rear plug on each cylinder is a pain to reach. Also, makes sure you have the correct coils, of you are replacing thoses as well, and hell, you might as well do them. If you have the wrong coils, they wont plug in correctly, and even if you do get them installed, your BMW won't start. It will crank, but it won't start. So, pull a front coil, get the part number off of it, and order them that way. Don't just the parts store, or even FCP, Pelican, ECS, etc..... Check your part numbers!
Thank you so much.
.
Note that I changed
My bugs
coils
sprays
I used BG cleaners with oil and gasoline.
I also used Lucas cleaner with gasoline twice.
.
I cleaned the air sensor
The sensor comes before the air gate
refrigerator sensor
Cleaned the fridge
And clean the solenoid valve
And the sensors of the bear (Shakman)
And I cleaned the air gate
.
The taffeta is still and the tensioner is weak.
.
Of course, the lights were changed and installed used.
Could it be the reason?
.
Of course, I get a malfunction code P0302
Although the bogie, sprayer and coil are new, original.
.
Can you help me with your experience?
BMW X5 E70 N55
2011
6 cylinder
Sooooo, the history of 330i and people wanting weight savings:
bmw gave people aluminium in E series - people said, that they don't want aluminium panels, so bmw gave people plasting engine parts in F series, people said again that they don't want that so bmw gave people 2 cylinders less in 330i G series - CHECK MATE ;)
@FCP Euro I got X5 2008 N52 Engine. Do you recommend taking out the Engine partition cover to reach spark plug #6? In most videos I see people struggling to remove the coil and spark plugs and no one thought to remove the engine partition above them?
If I buy the spark plugs from FCP Euro like they come ready to Install ???
Yep, pre-gapped and ready to install!
Get that hot air sucker of that motor wasted money
Planning to go with NGK 97506 1 step colder spark plugs on a stage 1 BootMod3 tune.
What should I gap my spark plugs to?
3:42 that Corrugated plastic pipe connector, I literally broke mine, as I tried to move the large intake pipe. Also, I think there is a plastic mount that is located above your left arm, that you didn't mention.
Omg I just now did that too! Mine cracked in the middle of the hose. After I had just done my ignition coils myself. I’m so mad right now.
What is the name of that piece. I broke mine too and trying to figure out what I need to buy as a replacement
Thanks! Keep it going, Can y'all do a winter tune up inspection next?
You're welcome! That's a good idea, Jerry!
Wow i remember when changing spark plugs in M54 E46 was a breeze.
Times have changed a bit 😂 it could be worse though!
Nicely done with good tips that will come in handy when doing spark plugs.
Thanks, Preetpal!
BMW wants about $1500 to do all 6 plugs and coils on my N55 engine for parts and labor. I purchased all of these parts on FCP Euro for $240 WITH LIFETIME WARRANTY and installed them myself in an hour. Local independent mechanic only wanted $150 to install them if i decided to not do it myself. Moral of the story stay away from the dealership!
Glad you found a better deal!
Yes, Dealers are just like GOV corrupt, just took my X5 to the Dealer cause my suv mix coolant in to the oil and they told me engine was bad and needed to be replaced a 2013 .
But a friend mechanic who knows BMW ways of triple they’re money love to use lies and shut your mindset to a negative mode and an expensive disappointment. Was just the seal at the filter housing that failed. Why they are so corrupt.
@@TheLaurenlee20 not sure but ive owned several BMW’s and have never stepped foot in a dealership and dont plan too.
yeah but how do you get the cover with the 2 hoses going over the last plug out of the way?
I bought the BMW Ignition Service Kit KIT-12138616153KT5. This video says the gap is on the box but this is incorrect. What a disappointment. I think I gapped then wrong and now need to pull at least one to confirm the plugs were gapped correctly. Please update your video.
Hi Carolyn, manufacturers can change the packaging on items like these. However, you will note in the description of the listing that these spark plugs come Pre-Gapped and do not need to be gapped before installation. If you are still having trouble please reach out to our team at Service@fcpeuro.com and they can help you out with anything you may need!
thanks
Thank you for making this video
Great video with lots of details, however where do you explain the most complicated part, gaining access to plugs #6 & #5?. This video is misleading in representing ease of replacement.
Hi, Eran. Glad you liked the video, sorry we didn't show enough of removing the plastic cowling to gain access to the number 5 and 6 spark plug!
Great video! Can you or anyone else help though please, what is the pipe you’re holding at 4:40 called? I’ve tried searching inlet pipe but can’t see to find the same one. Thanks!
It's often called an Intake Charge Pipe, or Charge Air Duct. What model is your BMW? We'd be happy to find you the right part!
FCP Euro this seems to be it here, but this is the only one showing up when I type in what it’s called on eBay : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254558988265
I have a 2011 f11 535i , thanks for your help!
FCP Euro I think ‘air duct’ seems to be working 👍🏻👍🏻
You are Awesome. Very informative !!
Hi, is it ok to use a one step colder ngk plug on a completely stock engine? Will it hurt anything? Thanks for this video.
We always recommend running OEM equivalent spark plugs if your cars engine is not tuned. Colder stepped spark plugs are more specific to tuned engines.
@@fcpeuro thanks very much, I'll be ordering the ignition kit from fcp actually and changing the plugs, coils and valve cover all at once and doing it with confidence thanks to your videos, it's really appreciated.
One step colder spark plugs would most likely leave you at risk of reaching soot fouling when doing many cold starts. The Center electrode has to reach temperatures above 400°C to de-carbonize. Although, if you drive a bit more aggressively than the normal person you might benefit from colder spark plugs. Also another risk with one step colder spark plugs is lower power combustion stability. Although NGK says that their HR8 is equivalent to Bosch HR 5 I think, NGK heat range 7 might be the more OE type heat range, or for instance DENSO heat range 24 would work as well.
Also an FYI, always use a torque wrench when replacing spark plugs. The ceramic is very brittle and sensitive to overtightning. The ISO standard for M12 x1.25 spark plugs in an aluminum cylinder head varies from 15-25Nm. The maximum tightening strength resistance of spark plugs are usually measured from above 35Nm, never go above this on M12 spark plugs, stick to the ISO standard (15-25Nm).
Also, do not relighting the spark plugs if they have a compressible washer/gasket.
Great video thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed the video Noah!

I know this video was posted a while ago, but what intake is that, I cant find anything on the market that is just a metal pipe with what appears to be a K&N filter on it??? Super curious as I would like to not have to buy Burger's intake nor would I like to pay 500+ for one. Thanks.
Thank you for making this video it helped me out a lot!
Hi bud, you are BMW master mechanic with lot of experience and knowledge. Question for you buddy. I have BMW X5 2012 E70, few days ago I disconnected battery to work on alternator. Once, I replaced bad Alternator and re-connected battery but somehow it fried my FRM3 module. Now, I have to replace my FRM3 module from dealership... what will be the cause that fried my FRM3 module when I re-connected battery. as, far I know my battery had no issues or any error codes etc.?
the whole purpose for cold intake suck colder than engine bay air. this one sucks directly from underhood which is even hotter than the regular one. what a stupid setup.
Awesome video!!! I wonder how you did for clearance on the last two AFT spark plugs im not sure if #5&6 or 1&2 . I have a couple connectors and insulations on the way.
In addition to only replacing one cylinder at a time one more trick and again just me.....
As you open the box and install the new plug, place the used plug in the same box and mark 1-6 for the cylinder number. I do that and place all the old plugs in the boxes and if busy you can read the old plugs at a later time. Also allows you to compare plugs with burn charts and isolate any problem plug to a specific cylinder. Simple and only a few extra seconds. You could even go so far as marking the boxes with cylinder number before removing the new plugs from the box.
As for checking gap....despite what the box may say always verify proper gap before installation. The box can get bumped or jarred during packaging or transit to the store and even the slightest bump could throw gap off.
Having had another vehicle with the 14mm spark plug sockets before I will advise be EXTREMELY careful when loosening and tightening the plugs. I had one that felt like it broke in half and was expecting to pull half of a plug back when I used the magnet to remove the #1 cylinder plug. Fortunately it came out as one piece but be very careful. There is not a lot of tolerance and plug tight and breaking can be a matter of 1/16th of a turn. Use Torque wrench for this one.
As with pretty much any spark plug removal don’t use air or electric tolls to break torque. Note regular ratchet/socket to break torque and then the electric ratchet.
Thanks FCP for the video
What are the recommended spark plugs especially if I wanna go FBO for my F10 2013 535i
Great video but yea screw that gonna take it to bmw lol I’m bad with plastic clips and stuff breaking lol
I wonder if any genuine BMW spark plug needs calibrated before install or those coming ready to plug and play? Thanks
Great instructions!! Bought the parts from FCP Euro. Good prices. Fast shipping. Took me 2 hours. But I’m not the fastest.
Great video, thanks a lot but I have to confess I have problems to change the plug on cylinder 6, this is missing here despite comments below
Thanks for teaching you are awesome.
You're pretty awesome too Hai!
You are really just going to flat out ignore five and six? It is not cut and dry.
He forgot the last two sparks smh
Just did a DIY in my n55, but got thrown an SES. Common for e92s?
If I have an X6 with N55, I assume I won't have to mess with the air intake?
Thanks, great video. Usefull for my BMW F25 35i
Whats the vacuum line that connects to the Intake pipe? Asking for a friend
Is it okay to use NGK iridium spark plugs? Or is it a waste of money?
Do iridium spark plugs work on a 3.0i x5 e53 engine
The tight fitting plug socket also stop people cross threading them when reinstalling them😀
These guys are cool at FCP Euro. Advise for newer Bosch spark plugs.. Be mindful of loose aluminum on steel screw on terminals. They tend to come loose with heat cycling and will cause your ignition coils to overheat and fail. Possible cause MOSFET failures in DME. Bosch decided to crimplock them on the thread without loctite. If your racing or looking for long term reliability please pay attention to this.
I am watching this in the southeast during mid 90 degree june weather and watching progressively get sweatier and sweatier makes me feel like i am out in my garage right now doing it with you haha
What spark plugs should i use for my 2013 f10. N55
I was driving my bmw 335i n55 and then my service engine light came on and my car started shaking. Is that a sign of worn out spark plugs and coils? It’s at 100k miles?
You will want to get the vehicle scanned as it can be anything, included the parts you mentioned. Depending on the service history of your vehicle, a simple plug change may be all it needs.
Great video, that corrugated hose with the 4 clips, what is that, I need a new one. Thanks
+1
Great video. Thanks!!
You're welcome, BB!
Great video. Thank you.
how do you know how much torque youre using??
Do we have to disconnect the battery for this job?
I read some advise that people recommend NGK spark plugs but in my location, i just can buy Bosch. Which one is better for BMW N20. Of couse, Both are BMW OEM.
If you can only purchase Bosch in your location, that will work perfectly fine!
For the F10 535i Msport option, are the plugs different? Also us there any fcp bundle that has plugs and socket sold as a kit?
Hello Great Gardengnome, the plugs are going to be the same for your N55, be sure to use the vehicle selector on the site to see our available kits!
No dielectric grease?
We do not apply is as these coils are press fit, and most people overuse the grease causing the coils to pop up off the spark plugs.
Perfect music when you have to turn a lot of bolts . I will use it when I work . Thank you for video !
Don’t go on flatrate dude at a dealer you will have a stroke lol

FCP Euro for the win!
Where can I find the socket?
Hey Kevin, we updated the description to include the link to the thin walled spark plug socket. Thanks for the heads up
FCP Euro Thank you. I was unable to find it using the search feature.
Do I need to gap the spark plug myself or does it come pre gapped and ready to install? Don’t know if this was already mentioned in the video
They are already gapped, he mentioned it in the video :)
7:41 do you need an angled 14mm??
Please provide links to both parts that you said were fragile. I’m 1 for 2 so far. The vacuum line part didn’t make it.
Hey J. here ya go! They can be fickle brittle pieces over time, and a pita to remove. www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-vent-hose-11127584128 , www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-vacuum-pipe-11657588771

If you have a stage 1 MHD Tune, would you use the same plug or go a step colder?
You may want to look into a one step colder plug, it would be best to check with your tuner of course.

I don't know why ECPeuro still don't sell the best coils out there for the F10 which are the ELDOR ignition coils! Fixes all issues that Bosch & Delphi have!
They do sell them..?

Are NGK laser iridium premium plugs good for this whip?
yes
I have a 2014 x5 35xi bone stock. 52,000 miles . When would you recommend changing the ignition coils ? I was thinking about doing it with the spark plugs soon or do you think that’s to early to do the ignition coils with 52,000 miles ?
If you aren't having any ignition issues at the moment, you should be fine for a little while longer, but if you want to avoid any future issues, you can certainly replace them now. If you do start to develop any misfires, then replacing them all at once would be the best move.
Appreciate the reply y'all very much. My bimmer is running perfectly but I'm gonna do the ignition coils to when I do the spark plugs. Like you said preventative maintenance never hurts.
