Alternate History of Paraguay: Every Year (1858-2020)

- Hello and thank you for clicking on this video. I make mapping animations on this channel. These animations show the borders of countries over periods of time and any wars that take place. Each belligerent has multiple hues of a colour to distinguish different levels of control. These are:
Darkest hue - Integral territory
Dark hue - Occupied territory
Lightest hue - Gains for the day
Along with this, there are different colours depending on the relations Paraguay has with that country at the time. These are:
Green - Allied in a war
Red - Enemy in a war
Aquamarine - Part of military alliance
Lastly, red borders represent border disputes.

Changes in timeline:
1. Paraguay wins the battle of the Riachuelo. With this victory, Paraguay gains naval dominance in the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. This also allows them to move troops from the Paraná river to the Uruguay, culminating in a decisive victory at Yatay.

As a paraguayan this was very touching to see
Why thank you!
@@arsha1434 Idk it was just my imagination that if Paraguay would've won that tremendous war, maybe the entire nation would've never be the same, the people, the politics would've so different.
It could have been, it all depends on what diverging point is chosen and the creator's choice of events.
jajaja
Very well made video and scenario.
We need more mapping videos about South America.
Agreed, South America has so much potential that's often overlooked in favor of European countries. It's also more difficult for mapping videos on south America to gain views compared to European ones.
@@arsha1434 indeed. Mapping community is pretty Eurocentric in terms of content.

Hello, i love your channel
I was in Paraguay a few years ago. Very interesting people and places. Brasil was also a great place to visit. Good!
I don't actually know anything about South America so it's nice to learn something
I didn't know much either before making this, other than the Paraguayan War OTL. After making this, I've gained a newfound respect for not only Paraguay but south America as a whole.
@@arsha1434 what did you learn?
For one I've learned more about Operation Condor, the US intervention in South america during the cold war. I've also learned much more about the First phase of the Paraguayan war. Seeing their daring attacks against an enemy with a much larger population, I view Paraguay at that time as the failed Prussia of South America.
Paraguayan here. Let's get to the point.
1) The war was lost from the getgo.
2) Argentina and Brazil would not stop even if paraguayan troops conquer Montevideo, which was by the way an impossible task.
3) The Chaco territory was already ours, not a "claimed" territory. Bolivians start invading us in the 1920s killing Lt. Rojas Silva, who is now remembered as a sort of Martyr for us.
4) I have got an entire book about Ayala's life. There is no way he could do a dictatorship.
5) Rafael Franco was not a communist. He was a military authoritarian who was BACKED by left wing movements in late 1930s but he was not a communist himself.
6) Stroessner was not backed by the USA untill the early 1970s. Until then, Stroessner managed to stay in power with Spain's Franco's help and mantaining economic trade with Brazil.
7) Guaraní would be the second official language of Paraguay by the 1960s due historical relevancy.
8) Dude what with that yellow flag, or the white star? That's facfiction.
9) Our country never had anything like a real funtional democracy until 1993 so even if we won the Triple Alliance War the authoritarian system would continue (but no: Ayala will not be a dictator by any means).
10) With our extreme love for catholic church, there're simply no way Paraguay could ever have anything to do with USSR nor Cuba, even without a US backed military dictatorship. I can say by my own experience that anticommunism in Paraguay it's not a consequence of Stroessner's legacy but rather paraguayan "default setting" of beliefs. For average paraguayan hearing a communist talking about religion being an opium it's a cringe situation.
But hey, nice video. Pretty unrealistic but it's clear you admire our country. Blesings from Paraguay.
Thank you for the feedback, it always helps to see it from someone with more knowledge of these events than me. The only way I saw Paraguay winning the war was through a series of quick victories before Brazil could move their overwhelming numbers and industry to the front. Although I do agree that they could just fight a war of attrition to burn out Paraguay. The flag was fiction as its bold change is supposed to show the modernity of the Paraguayan State. As for many of the leaders not being who they were in real life, I used the blanket excuse that the butterfly effect would have caused them to be radically different. It would have been better for me to use random Paraguayan names from the time, but hindsight is 20/20. I didn't know about the Paraguayan mentality of staunch anti-communisim, seeing there was a civil war in 1947 with the communists being a significant factor.
One thing I can disagree with was the claims on the Chaco. I should have shown it as under no effective control, but Paraguay's control was at best minimal with a few forts scattered here and there. Of course I seem to have a (much) more limited knowledge than you so I might be wrong.
The main reason why I made this was because of the underrepresentatipn of Paraguay in the (english) alternative history community. Paraguay lost so many lives in the Paraguayan War and I felt making an alternative history of Paraguay would be a interesting, idealised history to watch. And to restate, thank you for taking the time to watch my video and voice your critique, it really helps.

Really good, congrats!
As a former resident of Uruguay, I thought it was quite well done. OK, Paraguay would not really win all those battles and wars, but, it is an interesting concept. And the author seemed to understand the tensions between the various political groups.
hey your video was very good you can make an alternative history of Brazil :3 (Sorry for my terrible English I don't speak English I speak Portuguese)
I currently don't have any plans for an alternate history of brazil. Nonetheless, ill consider it for a future video.
Something really interests me!
This was really good I wish this was what happened in real life
Very good
Mbatekopa pasaba eso. Pero lo dudo mucho. No eramos un país que esté lo suficientemente armados o avanzado. Recién comenzábamos abrirnos comercialmente. Osea recien comenzábamos a desarrollarnos.
Podrían haberle ganado a Brasil definitivamente.
I’m gonna look stupid but when did southern brazil become independent?
Paraguay by declaring war on the Brazilian Empire, its destiny was defeat. And I say it as a Paraguayan. I don't want to see the insulting comments later.
What program do you use to make your videos?
For the slides I use paint.net. For the editing i use DaVinci resolve.
This was recomended to me after I made a video on Paraguay
Good Video
But I don't see how could Paraguay win the Paraguayan war alone, since they really outnumbered them.
But if Argentina fought in their side... they could have won.
The main reason of this possibility is a Federal government in Argentina, Federals and Paraguayans loved eachother, during the Paraguayan war, the army of entre ríos in argentina refused to fight since Paraguay was seen as their ally.
If López father was not so naive while treating with the Empire...
Now we could have been a Glorious Confederation
Brazilian here. Paraguay doenst have half of Parana and Santa Catarina. I never seen this map. Alternative history says we take that parking lot in 30 min
No Alfredo Stroessner, best future
