I used the 270 B backhoe on the John Deere 2038R compact tractor to remove this tree stump rather than grind it out.

Had my little 1025r for 9 months now have the hydraulic thumb on the backhoe. I still enjoy digging out stumps. Have spent hours digging holes. I guess entertainment comes in different forms. Might go make another hole today. Thanks Brock. Fun watching you digging holes too.

IMHO even though it took some time to remove, it was still the correct decision.
Down the road if you caught that stump with a bottom plow or tine of some sort you'd most likely break some equipment. And you'd still need to remove the stump.
Good work! It paid off in unknown future dividends.
By the way, the backhoe pallet is awesome 👍🏻

Brock, I have found if I start farther away from the stump than you think, then work inward, you break all the reaching roots first. It seems to make loosening the stump happen quicker, more like an apple core

Instead of always referring to icebergs as having "the tip of the iceberg" with way more underneath, maybe the phrase should be, "That's just the tip of the stump". :)

Those tap roots are always a hard part of a root to get out. Sometimes they go pretty deep and are solid, depending on the species of the tree. Good job getting that out of there. You'll appreciate it not having an expensive baler bounce over an old stump.
Yeah, I’ve only done a couple of these but that’s what I’m finding out. Grinding them is easier

i have dug out a large number of various size stumps by hand when i was younger and the last 5 years i have dug out a large number with my 1025r backhoe. i just got a 1p24 bauma light stump grinder last weekend to grind stumps that are to close to other trees and objects that you cant dig around or destroy root systems on trees next to a stump.

Running the baumalight stump Grinder is definitely faster but sometimes it’s better to dig them out
Lol I could almost smell that fresh dirt. Carrying that stump around in the backhoe while you filled the hole was looked like giving your puppy a new bone lol.

It looks like the bucket is moving pretty slow. You should rev It up.
Most operators run full throttle on backhoes and excavators. It should also give you a little more power.
It depends on the type of tree, the age of the tree, etc.
Some trees have tap roots and some don't.
Apparently patients & time are needed for stump removal with a BH. I can't wait for my weekend to be spent doing just that. Luckily, that will be in a couple of years from now. I am not ready to tackle that project just yet.

What are the draw backs from getting into that hole and chainsawing the stump off below the dirt line and then just burying the chunks?
Is it the dirt clinging to the lower part of the stump?
Couple different answers there.
That would work but as you mentioned it would probably dull the chain from the dirt as you mention. On our property I also tend to run into a lot of rocks in the root system
The reason I dug this out was to not leave a stump underground that would later rot out and caused the ground to sink in but the lower you cut it the less of a problem that is.
Once I dug it pretty far down I figure I might as well finish it off.
The final reason I didn’t do it that way: I didn’t think of it so thanks for the suggestion. That option may come in handy in the future
I'm looking at buying my first tractor. In addition to other work (ditch/driveway maintenance, mowing 5 acres) I have 4-5 old stumps (12") that I need to dig up. What size/HP tractor would you recommend?

What rpm are you doing the backhoe work at?
Idle is around 800 RPM. I do most of my digging between 1000 and 1200 RPMs.
When you rev it up you get a little more power but the controls get really jerky. It operates really smoothly at idle

Thanks. At idle you have about 90% of your max strength on the backhoe. Turning up the PMs just makes it jerky
@@RockhillfarmYT I think you would get used to the jerky movement the more you use it but if that works for you. That's the way to go... I have just found your channel and its a really great one... I have a 2032R with 270 B backhoe got a little over 1100 hrs. on it. Ben Drooling at your Curtis Cab and install There goes more money.. LOL
The Curtis cabs are great.
Before I bought my tractor I watched tractor time with tim talking about why he runs the RPMs low when he’s using the backhoe. Probably just personal preference
That’s a lot of hours. I’m almost to 400 in my first year but I haven’t seen many people with that many hours on One of these
