duran duran has one of the best bass players of all time. that is some incredible skill, i am a music teacher, and their bassist jumps out to me in full force. what an amazing talented player
Thank for saying that. John Taylor their bass player is very underrated by music critics. But he has stood the test of time and is better now than ever!
Duran Duran los mejores y más fabulosos de todos los tiempos gracias por compartir con nosotros los fans de Duran Duran este video simón es lindo mi favorito
Please I can literally name a hundred better bassists off the top oh my head. I like Duran Duran and have been a fan of 40 yrs but even John Taylor would tell you he’s an entertainer and not a musicisn and as a supposed teacher should know the difference.
Taylor is a decent bass player and I’m a fan but let’s not go crazy with this. He is no Entwistle, Wilkenfeld, or even Foxton. Even Taylor would agree.
I saw them in March '84 in Florida. We expected them to sound like they did on their albums. They didn't, but we loved them so much, who cared? You knew the words to every song they performed, and you screamed and danced along with them. I'll never forget at one point, John was walking backward, and Andy was too - toward each other. They almost bumped right into each other from behind!! Then there were all the "lookalikes" in the audience. It was a total blast - A fun night!
i became a bass player thanks to duran duran...i started in orchestra 1985 i wanted to start in 83 but there were no programes for 10 year olds at the time so i had to wait 2 years..im now 34 and there isnt a duran duran song i cant play..i still love this stuff D
I am so glad you posted this. I am a long time guitarist of 33 yrs of age. i went over to the Bass side 2 years ago. John Taylor, Peter Hook, Andy Rourke, Carlos Dengler are my gods.
Awesome band, and they're like - 12 years old ;) Wow - most musicians can't play like these guys no matter how experienced they are. Very talented, and the girls might even like 'em.
Actually, he's a student of Bernard Edwards, the late bassist for the R&B group, Chic. Edwards produced John Taylor's other band, The Power Station. Legend has it that Edwards willed his favorite Fender Jazz Bass to John Taylor...PEACE.
It wasn't Edwards' Fender Jazz. It was both his legendary Ernie Ball Music Man bass and the BC Rich bass he used to record Le Freak. Taylor still has both to this day.
I hear you. I was born in 1974 so I came up in the 80s and desite Thatcher & Reagan it was a positive era for pop culture...today we have shit....maybe Intrepol? I am a big Joy Division/N.O. and Smiths fan btw
Very , very good. e vai Duran, duran tanta acqua e passata sotto i ponti ma questa canzone rimane un icona e fa ancora venire i brividi per le emozioni che da'
I see a lot of comments below raving about the basslines, but the real trademark of this song is the synthesizer riff from the very intro.....it's the song's identity!
This must have been toughest song to translate to live up to the vid. I remember exactly where I was standing at Seattle Colosseum when Rio started playing at that show
I agree. The cameraman missed a LOT of opportunities to focus on John and his playing. As someone else mentioned, the cameraman also seemed to forget that Nick Rhodes is in Duran Duran, too. ~odd~
"Rio" Moving on the floor now, babe, you're a bird of paradise Cherry ice cream smile, I suppose it's very nice With a step to your left and a flick to the right You catch that mirror way out west You know you're something special And you look like you're the best Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand Just like that river twisting through a dusty land And when she shines, she really shows you all she can Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV Two of a billion stars, it means so much to me Like a birthday or a pretty view But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand Just like that river twisting through a dusty land And when she shines, she really shows you all she can Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande Hey now, woo, look at that Did he nearly run you down? At the end of the drive, the lawmen arrive You make me feel alive, alive, alive I'll take my chance 'cause luck is on my side or something I know what you're thinking I tell you something, I know what you're thinking Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand Just like that river twists across a dusty land And when she shines, she really shows you all she can Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand And I might find her if I'm looking like I can Oh, Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land From mountains in the North down to the Rio Grande
My take on the "I'm Bored" comment. When he says that, it is during the bridge part of the song which is much more mild for the bass player. The rest of the song he is flying on that bass. I do wish they had produced this video a little less and given us more of the raw video. Great song though.
yeah it does ..weird, maybe just trying something different and was a bad idea, never heard him fuck around on that section before or after that though :)
no im not in a band..and i think it has to do with geography more than anything else..i live outside cleveland ohio, when i read on myspace bassit wanted its usually for some screaming band..there is noting wrong with your "leval" we all have to start some where in life, when i started i was overwhlemd by things..just relax you will eventually get the hang of things, ill give u alot of credit for your inffluences..lets go to bed from the cure is my favorite bassline from them..keep in touch! d

The Bass is phenomenal

Agree 100% percent!
El bassist también...
There is in my opinion no other bass player better than JT. He is awesome!!!
One of the bands that *defined* the '80s, which as far as i'm concerned was the best decade i've been alive in.
The bass in this is EVERYTHING!!
Walking through the shopping centre this morning...this blasting through the speakers...nice way to start the morning...bit of Rio.
I saw them in March '84 in Florida. We expected them to sound like they did on their albums. They didn't, but we loved them so much, who cared? This song is another masterpiece of DURAN DURAN and the awesome '80's music. nothing can be compared with this music.
John Taylor ROCKS on the bass here! I miss these guys!! :D
Simon.John.Andy.Nick.Roger
Those 5 brit guys are the 100% that we can called Duran Duran!!!!
The best live version of Rio is this, tour 84
This song made me fall in love with the bass!!
duran duran always puts on one heck of a show

Wow - most musicians can't play like these guys no matter how experienced they are.
Very talented, and the girls might even like 'em.

incredible performance! lots of energy on the stage, and i loved the "1,2,3,4"! that simon shout...he is so hot!
And how hot he looks playing that bass. He is amazing.
Actually, he's a student of Bernard Edwards, the late bassist for the R&B group, Chic. Edwards produced John Taylor's other band, The Power Station. Legend has it that Edwards willed his favorite Fender Jazz Bass to John Taylor...PEACE.

Finally found it again!!!

Great song and video. The bass lines are just fantastic in this song.
Omg I love Duran Duran, Simons gorgeous x
Dunno how to explain but the bassline of this song is just sexy amarite
So is the bass player JT!!
@doubledragtap all of John's basslines are simply amazing. Even more, if you imagine how young he was a that time!
GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GUYS ❤️!!!!!!
I hear you. I was born in 1974 so I came up in the 80s and desite Thatcher & Reagan it was a positive era for pop culture...today we have shit....maybe Intrepol?
I am a big Joy Division/N.O. and Smiths fan btw
Never admired the bass as much till today in this live version WOW 👏
Very , very good.
e vai Duran, duran tanta acqua e passata sotto i ponti ma questa canzone rimane un icona e fa ancora venire i brividi per le emozioni che da'
STILL rocks and sounds as effing great as the day they did it!!! Whhhooooooooweeee!
One my favorite songs by them .:)
wow...I never would have thought that. Not that I know about great bass players and have been a Rush fan (HUGE) and Duran Duran fan almost 30 years.
after watching a lot of duran durans live clips from their hey days!!. imho durans durans rhytm section (Drum and bass) is often too underrated!!.
This aired on MTV one time in 1985...amazing but lost concert film!! Release this you guys!!
I see a lot of comments below raving about the basslines, but the real trademark of this song is the synthesizer riff from the very intro.....it's the song's identity!
Each to his own. Me, I listen for the bass. You, for the synth. If we are both happy then what else matters?
As The 💡 Turned Down or As A 🕯️ Goes Out!, As The 💡 Lights Goes Down! And U Got It!!!!
their hair is so coooool
Watched them last night in Baton Rouge they were great! Brought back old memories.
Great show!
This must have been toughest song to translate to live up to the vid. I remember exactly where I was standing at Seattle Colosseum when Rio started playing at that show

What I'd yell to the keyboardist would be "PLAY THOSE FLIPPING KEYBOARDS, NICK!!"
Best song forever!!
Quiero una máquina del tiempo y estar ahí en ese concierto jugando con los globos y volviéndome loca🤩🥰
Love this such a classic
Hard working band
I'm really surprised by how well they sound when performing live! Oh, and by the way, they are all 'business in the front and party in the back'.
Gosh!!!! Those were the days. Scary!!!!!
I still love Duruan Duran!
man look at that crowd! i wish i was there....
2:45 best sax solo ever!!
John Taylor is a sick bassist
I miss the 80's, though I haven't been born yet :X

Very good bass
Great song and band!
Cool Tune.
Jesus this was 40 years ago now (2024). Jesus this was uploaded 17 years ago. I'd no idea that I'd drifted this deep into the past.
I was 12 and really crazy for John 💋😘💖💕💞
I was 12 also. JT was my favorite member and after that Simon. And JT is still my guy today too.
Very very good musicians
Que música maravilhosa
Fiz o cover de 'Save A Prayer'... Depois você confira!
Bjs!
@ Mailibu: Yes... Absolutely. The crazy thing is how good he got in such a short time.
Natural talent no doubt. He made his dream a reality! Pretty inspirational!!!
the drummer man...hes like a machine gun lol
"Rio"
Moving on the floor now, babe, you're a bird of paradise
Cherry ice cream smile, I suppose it's very nice
With a step to your left and a flick to the right
You catch that mirror way out west
You know you're something special
And you look like you're the best
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV
Two of a billion stars, it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
Hey now, woo, look at that
Did he nearly run you down?
At the end of the drive, the lawmen arrive
You make me feel alive, alive, alive
I'll take my chance 'cause luck is on my side or something
I know what you're thinking
I tell you something, I know what you're thinking
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twists across a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh, Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand
And I might find her if I'm looking like I can
Oh, Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land
From mountains in the North down to the Rio Grande
they belong in the Hall!!!
John Taylor is a Bass god.
good video
looks have to be looked at in perspective of the era ;-)
Excelente
2020??
Cameraman missed alot of opportunity to film john and nick. John was playing awesome could hear him while the camera was filming something else
I was at this concert
So cool...always wondered why this never got included on the Arena album...somebody got a clue?
My take on the "I'm Bored" comment.

I do wish they had produced this video a little less and given us more of the raw video.
Great song though.
I hope Rio is included on
Rockband 1 on the playstation 3.
I never buy it until now :(
0:30 are all of you watching that strange moment when Roger Taylor actually SMILES?!
Muito bommmmmmm !!!
How many people were in that concert. It seems completly full.
I think Peter Frampton was at the concert at the time ..
Did the camermen forget Nick was in the band or something?
No, i have never been, wish i could someday.
@blabblab1212 Not to mention playing that sweet ass bassline...
hrm is that an alternative bassline in the bridge i heard? think i like it :P
Will Ferrous dude i was a hardcore punk in th e the 80s , but a few queer bands were really tight , this is one of em,
***** um ok?
+Eet Chit that referred nothing to the original comment
Roger Taylor is the most handsome man in the world
its the video for the reflex ffs
John's bass style was influenced by Bernard Edwards, the CHIC bass player
Bernard edwards has influenced several top bass players .. ex guy pratt
haha 80's video editing how silly :) but that show looked epic
I wonder why they never did an official video for this live version?
yeah it does ..weird, maybe just trying something different and was a bad idea, never heard him fuck around on that section before or after that though :)
I want to change my name to Rio now
Dammit Simon! Don't change the rhythm of the lyrics!
