  • This is what the interior of the Chinqua Penn Plantation looked like when it was still fully furnished. The contents of the house have since been auctioned off.
Federal agents seized the property and assets in September 2010.
The items inside the mansion were sold at auction in April 2012.
Chinqua Penn went into foreclosure in September 2013.
This footage was used for location scouting and planning purposes in 2007 for the films "Mandie and the Secret Tunnel" and "Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure." Because this video served as a visual storyboard for the films, there are numerous 360 degree shots of many rooms and several real-time walkthroughs of the routes taken to get from one room to another.
"Mandie and the Secret Tunnel" filmed on location inside the mansion in 2007. Dean Jones appears in the movie and filmed scenes at Chinqua Penn.
"Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure" filmed on location inside the mansion in 2010. Hayley Mills appears in the movie and filmed scenes at Chinqua Penn.
The mansion is now completely empty. The footage presented here was recently discovered on a vaulted hard drive and I am making it available as quite possibly the most complete visual record of the contents and layout of the mansion.

I just found this Channel. I grew up several houses from this Mansion. I used to help my Mother when she worked at the Office there.
    I surely miss it!

I toured the home and grounds when I was in Jamestown Junior High School in the late 1960's. It made such an impression that I wanted to take my children and grandchildren but now only to find it is gone as I saw it. From the powder room from Versailles .to the reproduction of one of Tut's throne chairs, it all made such a memory. Thanks for the video.

Even though it's been 3 years since this was posted, I just found it!!!
Thank you so much for posting this video.
We used to tour this wonderful place when I was a kid. I was telling someone about it the other day.
It breaks my heart to see what's happened to this property.
But, I hope whoever recently bought it will restore it to its former glory.
I will always remember the pair of spaniel looking Staffordshire Dogs that sat on one of the mantles.
I credit Chinqua Penn for my lifelong love of antiques and anything eclectic❤
Thank you again for posting this video

Wow! It was a beautiful place! My daughter’s wedding was there in 2009! Many of her wedding pictures show the how magnificent the mansion was. Also, the wedding guests were allowed to tour the home before the wedding. We have many pictures of the inside and outside gardens! It is so hard to view the abandoned place and surroundings of now. Thanks for this video and the memories!

Thank you so much for this. We've lost a great piece of history in NC. And we were never allowed to photograph the inside when touring. Glad to have this video!

A true tragic moment in NC and American history. A National Landmark is gutted because of some guy's bad business practices and the IRS wants their money. PLEASE !! the University was very irresponsible in not making a safety net to cover the property in the event of a financial failure. It should have been declared a national landmark and entered in the National Historic Trust. Then it would have been a lot harder to just gut it. We truly have lost another of America's great castles. The thousands of hours of craftsmanship that went into this mansion is beyond the imagination.

I saw Chinqua-Penn in 1966, the first year it was open to the public...and continued to visit during its various incarnations of ownership. Thank you for this video record. The people of North Carolina through the University of North Carolina University system, once owned this eclectic mansion and its contents, the gift of Betsy Penn and her heirs. We just weren't willing to support it. Very short-sighted of us...and now, it is gone...

Thanks for posting! The very eclectic and regal collection of the Penn's was inspired! I toured the house many times. The sale to the Phelps was a huge mistake. The seizure of the house and furnishings broke my heart. Someone lacked the vision and integrity for the estate's future. One can only hope the Phoenix rises from the ashes..... let's hope....for a new beginning.🌿

Tragic loss for North Carolina! I visited here as a child and it has always remained a memory that I hold onto. it was such a beautiful place. Rich in style and furnishings from all over. Breaks my heart to see it lost.

Thanks for the memories, my uncle was Bob Boyles, the chauffeur for the Penn's for many years. In my youth I had the opportunity to stay with my Uncle Bob and Aunt Nanny. I made many visits to the "Big House" and had the opportunity to swim in the pool by the Chinese Pagoda. Truly an American treasure lost.

I'm not even American and I think it's a terrible shame, what has happened to this grand estate. I first came across it on UA-cam when I saw a fantastic exploration video that was recorded in it's abandoned state. Sadly, that video has now been removed at the request of the new owners and the original uploader won't answer my request for a personal copy. :-P The new owner should not have the right to demand the video's removal. The person who filmed it should have the right to share it, as it's an American historical treasure. I really regret not downloading a copy of the original video when I had the chance. I really loved looking around the empty house through the footage. It felt as if I was there!
Calvin Phelps destroyed this beautiful piece of Americana.

That was a great video!! I was telling coworkers about it today and I was checking to see if he ever reposted. Calvin Phelps is a piece of work and it’s a shame his wife wasn’t punished as well.

I've been looking for a video like this since i first saw another video of the house (in that one it was already empty) and i always wonder how did it look like when it was fully furnished! I looked everywhere for pictures or videos but nothing decent showed up. THANK YOU for taking time and sharing it, i really appreciate it.

+Chattanooga Like a Local I hope you realize it is sitting empty and very run down now, not to mention recently purchased this year and Privately owned ! Another video you may want to see is here on you tube showing the shape it's in now , as mentioned in Mr. Smiths description above .... he also left the link to the video. Very sad indeed to see it in the condition it's currently in. Mr. Smtih, thank you for sharing this well done video of the plantation house in it's heyday, so nice to see/remember it like it was back in it's prime . I find it somewhat odd that in the Mandie movies the interior of Chinqua Penn led you to believe it was the interior of Moses Cone Manor but hey, the movies ARE fiction and am sure you had valid reasons for portraying it the way you did !

Yes Sir I am unfortunately aware of that. I also have family that live nearby to the property so that is another excuse for our trip. I am hoping to get a good look at it in the current condition. Thank you for the heads up either way.

Yes I found out that is true. Someone was testing the clock tower bells when we arrived. I believe good things are happening at the property although it is private. Awesome video!

The ship was a prop brought in for the film so it wasn't present during the initial location scout. You can see the ship here: ua-cam.com/video/naOCYuN0eJM/v-deo.html

What a terrible thing to do with original contents that were donated to the people of North Carolina from the original owners. There should've been a way to keep the contents in tact for the future. What a waste.
