As someone who never got too into Transformers, I found this video super interesting and very entertaining. The Dinobots are one of the few parts I've always been drawn to from the franchise. Vintage Grimlock is one of the few Transformers in my toy collection. Great stuff!

Gotta go into full Dino-dweeb mode for a moment: The Dinobots had a much better origin story in the Marvel comics of the '80s, where they were Autobots awakened by the Ark to deal with a threat after it originally crashed on Earth in prehistoric times. Since dinosaurs were the dominant life form then, the Ark appropriately gave them dinosaur alt-modes before they were buried and rediscovered and re-awakened by Ratchet millions of years later.

Ben Hopper the million years thing I always chose to ignore. Why would soldier survivors be interested in continuing a war that was a million years old stranded on an alien planet?

the comics may have been better overall for both GI Joe and Transformers. I still like Transformers G1 cartoons better than the GI Joe 80s one though. Just so many jokes and hilarious moments (intentionally and unintentionally). Starscream rules!

And that threat to the Ark being Shockwave also explained why he still transformed into a huge Cybetronian flying gun, having been trapped in a tar pit for 3 million years. Also Shockwave fighting the Dinobots was pretty awesome.

Yep. My guess is that the first issue of the comic was written first and shortly after was adapted into the cartoon, and the writers keeping the "4 million years later" angle was an oversight. It really doesn't add anything to the cartoon's plot.

I remember being exceptionally confused as a kid when I got Grimlock after seeing him on the cartoon and looking at the "Tech Spec" bio that was printed on the box he came in.
His quote, "Among the winners, there is no room for the weak." Pretty well spoken for a guy that started nearly every sentence with, "Me Grimlock say...."
Then I remember looking at his actual attributes.
    "Strength: 10" I'll buy that.
    "Intelligence: 7" What. The. F***.

Earlier this month at Anime Expo, I learned that Shoji Kawamori (Macross) designed a lot of the OG Transformers. He also did mech design for Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam 0083 and Armored Core. Truly a Mecha God.

Poor Grimlock would be one of the only dinos to make it into season 3 on a regular basis. The fall might have been their creation in ditching the disguise formula, but by season 3 Grimlock is a bad caricature of his old self setting the blue prints for what would become barney the dinosaur fame.

Season 3 gromlock was awesome. He had way more wins than a mentally challenged Dino should have and we loved his character for it. He saved the day when Tornatron was threatening to rule the universe and he created the technobots when some intelligence got zapped into his brain. Best of all he seemed to always be in T-Rex mode even inside confined spaces. It was glorious.

If I remember correctly, Optimus OK'd the Dino project as a counter to Devastator. I liked what Dream Wave comics did with the Dynobots, actually giving them, or at least Grimlock, some intelligence. It's a shame someone back then did not think about upgrading the Dinos into a combiner.

The only Dinobot I had as a kid was Snarl and his tail pin ended up breaking - though It would stay on when in Dinosaur mode. Many years later I sold my Transformer and G,I Joe toys to local Comic Book Store for a couple hundred dollars. Many more years later, while going through some boxes I found Snarl, which had not been in with the other Transformers. I took him apart, cleaned him up, replaced the pin and touched him up with a little paint. Then I bought the accessories for him on Ebay.

Like someone else mentioned, other continuities gave em better origins. Fall of Cybertron is my favorite, Grimlock and his team were investigating Shockwaves demented experiments that created the Insecticons, and end up being captured and tortured into the Dinobots. Grimlock especially doesn't take this too well and bit off Shockwaves hand, as a way to explain his hand laser. I love that game

Aww, I love the 86 movie. I always sorta liked the Dinobots as a kid, but I came in during late G1 so all I had was Pretender Grimlock and eventually a G2 Slag. I got to love Grimlock from the old Marvel comics and was ecstatic when I found a G2 Grimlock at a thrift shop when I was 18 or so.

RetroBlasting - I think the Dinobots were a good idea for Prime, as the Dinobots provided much needed Muscle for the Autobots.
Remember, in Early G1 the autoboots had no Combiners. It wasn't until Scramble City that Autobots gained Combiners.
that said, the Dinobots should have been made into Combiners, Hound created a Hologram as a Distraction, but was never Realized by Hasbro as the Dinobots were adapted from Diaclone. but Perhaps if Hasbro Released RAIDEN in G1 that Might have worked. but then America did NOT have Bullet Trains.

When I was a kid watching transformers reruns in the early nineties I was already sold on the concept of cars, planes, ghetto blasters, and guns transforming into giant robots but when they gave us robot dinosaurs that transformed into humanoid robots I was pretty much foaming at the mouth with happiness. As a kid that time robots and dinosaurs were each like the coolest things imaginable and rolling those two things into one was just more than I'd dared dream of. I would have loved to get the toys of them as a kid but I did manage to get my hands on a swoop.

I never took any kind of thought to why the Dinobots and Insecticons and later on the road, the Predacons and Terrorcons were different from the other Transformers but then I realized they were purposed. Insecticons were MEANT to be pests of Cybertron who were scorned by all as living embodiments of cancers and the Dinobots, being dinosaurs...were ACTUALLY manifestations of primal RAGE and ANGER of soldiers rushing into a war since you know..Autobots and Decepticons were always at war so its gonna be crazy like that. Dinosaurs are literally the world leaders and warlords of their time no matter how crazy that sounds but it ALL makes sense. The Dinobots' robot forms would be an analogy of hiding their savage natures thus they DISGUISE their true nature but their "TRUE" Robot forms...are INDEED the dinosaur forms. Say what you will but the robot forms of the Dinobots are LITERALLY their TRUE forms no matter how dumb it sounds but it makes sense.
It comes so true to me and I think the same thing could be said about other groups of animal Transformers who AREN'T cassette forms like Laserbeak and Ravage because they took the forms of animals who are domesticated. Slugfest and Overkill, yeah they are dinosaurs but they seem to be taking the forms of baby dinosaurs who would follow their perpetual mother a.k.a Soundwave. That's messed up.
Yeah,it's a kids show at first but wow,I can't believe I've actually made a pretty good theory on why these Primitives came about. Man,I really wished 'Call of the Primitives' had a better story like I described above for you guys. But eh. Oh well.

Yes the Dinobots !! My favorite Transformers ever Grimlock, Snarl, Slag, Sludge, and Swoop. Oh how i loved them.
Okay on to business the dinobots did break the illusion of robots in disguise, however one must remember that all 80's and 90's cartoon shows where created to be a 1/2 hour long toy commercial. That being said one should also take into acount how many times the dinobots appeared on the show. I can only remember about 4 to 5 episodes that they were in. The whole idea of transformer was cool and seeing robot dinosaurs was even cooler when your a kid. I have always loved them and always will.

I loved the Dinobots! They took Devastator head on and left without so much as a scratch. That bad ass factor went up in the movie when all the other Autobot were cowering in fear of Devastator and Optimus just told the Dinobots "Dinobot! Destroy Devastator". The Grimlock just says "Me Grimlock like challenge". I mean outside of Slag getting a good hit on Devastator they were all smack around by him and not only loved to tell about it but acted as if they were not damaged at all. They were definitely the most durable of the Autobots.

I love how this almost started out sounded like you where going to deride the dinobots for existing...but was more of a excepting love of them for breaking the premise and still being cool, which i have to agree..who doesnt like robot dinosaurs?!?
i only had the luck of ever having, or being able to play with grimlock, slag, sludge and snarl...though i could swear i had a friend at the time who had swoop.. but he might have gotten broken. on a side note, I still have glittery memories of transformers the movie, seeing it in it a theatre that still had ROCKY VI banners up, Optimus's dying scene was the first time i remember crying over a fictional characters death along with the ACTUAL death of characters..Ironhide, Prowl, Ratchet and Brawn get outright blown away...and we dont even get to see what happens with Windcharger and Wheeljack...its odd how emotionally scarring this movie was for a child.

Wheel Jack was like “Watch me punk Optimus, he doesn’t know these animals are extinct and don’t look like robots.” Grimlock was fun though. I guess Slimlock didn’t suit him

I've never seen a video about the original designers of the transforming toys. Just think about it, they made them in the late 70s early 80s. Thats just crazy that someone could design a toy the looks like a existing car and a real looking robot. How did they pull that off back then? You could even interview current designers that did the masterpiece line.

I was never a huge transformers fan when I was a kid (more into GI Joe, MASK, He-Man and Star Wars), but I do think the Dinobots were the coolest looking of them all. Well, them and Soundwave.

I still have my original Optimus Prime, minus the trailer.i loved that toy when I was younger. The boxes came with wee holograms on them as well.

Loved the video! Never had a Swoop or Sludge early on but one friend did. Swoop broke for him as well. Only thing missing here is the mention of the dinobots in the Marvel Comics. Grimlock was even leader for about 20 issues there (that's when I was reading it fresh).

The comics have their own video in the future. They, like the Joe comics, will be a dedicated video.

For me my love of transformers was the toy line. As a kid I liked the cartoons but getting the toys was my focus, so I didn't care about storyline inconsistencies. The dinobots and the insecticons were my favorite mostly due to my love of animals. I still have all my G1 figures but I need Swoop and Sludge! I'm also looking for a decent Hound and Ravage. The reissues are cool but I want the G1 originals. Thanks for more awesome content!

you can say the dinobots broke the premises of the show, but they were and still are some of the most popular characters ever in transformers history. it is like with snake eyes and storm shadow's popularity, ninjas and dinosaurs will always be cool, and when Slag says excuse me in the movie i can't help but smile.

***** yes i suppose it is so yes i was agreeing with you. it was not my intent to just reiterate what you said, just expressing my love for the characters,no need to be nasty.

+Mark Demeo (ARCTROOPERMARK) I was being nasty? How?

    • @retroblasting
      @retroblasting  8 років тому +1

+Mark Demeo (ARCTROOPERMARK) your phrasing, "you can say this, but..." Implied I didn't address the positives that you proceeded to outline.

    • @MarkDemeo
      @MarkDemeo 8 років тому

***** when you put the word literally in all caps that is thought of as yelling,i guess that is what i meant as nasty. i didn't want to imply that you didn't address the positives,if i did i am sorry. i guess i just was very excited to give my thoughts on the dinobots and didn't realize i was just re stating what you said in the video,if this caused any bad feelings i apologize for this. i have been a big fan of your channel for years, and enjoy the content very much. this was another well done video as usual,i will stay tune for future releases as they come out, again sorry for any confusion.
