Personally, the older appliances are the kind you keep until they break (and can't be fixed), most of the "cutting edge" pieces would get chucked in a few years. A chrome toaster? Dibs. A weird, pole-lamp-light thingy? No thanks.
The old-school appliances here (Toaster, Radio, etc) were more like 50s/60s generation. Computers get outdated and replaced REALLY fast, but a toaster keeps for 20 years. Mind you, that Toaster Oven would be cool, too.
It's ironic, at the very least the toaster, lamp, and Kirby vacuum would likely still be used or passed on to another owner. A computer from the 80's would be in a museum or scrapped
@Ryan Those old vacs are pretty dusty, so unless you're using it as a garage/shop vac, a modern one would be preferable. But toaster, desk lamp and clock radio are basically beyond obsolescence. The most exiting new development for toasters was adding a setting for bagels. clock radios are basically all the same too, if it has an FM tuner, it would even be good now. Desk lamp is a desk lamp, slap a CLF or LED in it and it's good to go. The computer would be trash in a year or two in the 80's, the Hifi when CD's become mainstream, same for mr boom-box. The early touch-tone phone would be done in favour of cordless and phones with caller ID. Toaster ovens tend to expire fast, same with cheap "As seen on TV" mixers. Blanket though, that little guy is definitely a fire-hazard, probably stuffed with asbestos, and also likely pretty smelly and gross. Electric blankets have a very limited life span due to being hard to launder. That and they used to be very, very un-safely built.
For those saying this song doesn't work because of how quickly the "new" appliances became obsolete while the older ones are just as good now as they were decades ago... ...That's deliberate.
it is pretty ironic. The machines from years ago were ment to last... and do. The "modern" machines from this song were actually built to wear out so that you had to go buy more.
Additionally, out of all the "new" appliances, the only one with any value nowadays is probably the computer. Imagine how many retro collectors and techie nerds would want that thing. MAYBE the lamp too, that could still be of value--hell, he's not even really much of a replacement, Lampy's a desk lamp and Purple Guy there is the type of lamp you put on an end table, both are perfectly useable at the same time.

The funny thing is that the more complex a machine is, the easier it is to replace. Would you throw out a toaster just because it was old? If it fried your circuit breaker each time you used it sure, but if it was just old? No, you throw it out when it doesn't work anymore A computer on the other hand, they become outdated so quickly, because we're constantly finding new ways to to improve them.

i love how real-life kinda vindicated this. Like, most of the "cutting edge" tech, especially that computer, looks entirely outmoded. The average person replaces their computer every 4 years. Their phone? Every 2. But, stuff like the Toaster himself or the vacuum? You could see stuff like that TODAY, in all likelihood. I know people who use 50-year old toasters or vacuums, but stuff like TVs are replaced constantly.

Ironically enough, all those "cutting edge" 80's technology appliances are outdated now and probably in the junkyard being chased around by the giant magnet. Meanwhile, older model toasters, lamps, and vacuums like the ones seen here actually still hold up today and can still be functional. Old but not obsolete.
The computer would be one of the more valuable items though, being those old computers are kind of collectors items now. Rest might be thrift store shelf stuff. Maybe the lamps, because people are into 80's stuff all the sudden.
I could see the lamp still getting use, that type of lamp is still pretty common. But yeah, basically the only one who'd be truly valuable now would be the computer--even after being long outclassed, I could easily see it selling for a good price to some nerd on ebay or enjoying a spot of its own in a technology museum or something.
the toaster oven, food processor, sewing machine and lamp all seem pretty common even today, like you could walk into a target or walmart and get items virtually identical to them today. now some may be found in thrift stores but you could still buy them new today.
Something I think is interesting is that despite the fact that these "cutting edge" appliances are completely outdated by now, many of them would still be in working condition today. Technology simply evolved faster than these machines could break.
A lot of it comes from planned obsolescence. Most of the biggest electronics and tech companies today design or market their stuff to make you want to buy (or have to buy) new ones all the time. Its a concept from at least as far back as Henry Ford in the 1920s, but it has been key to the rise of companies like Apple (which, incidentally, was around during the time of this movie; that computer may be based on an Apple II) and Samsung (which was also around back then but was limited in what they sold outside of Korea). For instance, software updates render some apps unusable after just two years. Samsung in particular will not update Android after about 12 months after the device's release, giving you no choice but to but a new one to keep up.
Cheap toaster ovens tend to break rather fast, same for cheap mixers. Aside from vacuum and blanket, the rest of the old guys were more or less set. How foes a toaster become obsolete? A desk lamp? Even a clock radio is fine as long as it has an FM tuner. Vacuum isn't so lucky, since upright bag vacs tend to be very dusty, maybe a second life as a shop/garage vac, since he's robust, but having a rug-beater built in, I doubt that. And electric blankets just get really gross over time, because you can't easily launder them. All the new ones are doomed, except the ugly purple lamp, but it's an ugly purple lamp that will get tossed when it's no longer fissionable.
@@kauske Not exactly. That sewing machine pretty much looks the same as any sewing machine you'd find today. As for the stereo and phone, my family has appliances that are around the same age as this movie and still work just fine. Can't really go wrong with that several-bulb lamp either.
It depends on its features, I'm guessing it was supposed to be a "deluxe" sewing machine with "Advanced" features. A lot of those break down or are crappy. A nice machine, that does stich patterning based on metal cogs and a metal follower will last forever. That one looks like it might use cheap electronics to control the stitch pattern. Those ones went out of style and we went back to cogs, though shitty plastic ones that will break down with use. I always thought the tall post thing was some kind of party strobe light, basically just a part of the HiFi that would get trashed along with it when it's obsolete.
Yep That computer's voice still freaks me out after all these years. Imagine yourself asleep then you wake up seeing him on top of you saying "Everything you wanted and MOOooore!" That would be beyond unsettling.
When I was a kid, we had an old toaster that looked like the one in this movie. Then my mom got a brand new toaster that was modern and white with a big dial on it for changing the heat setting, and she tried to toss out our old toaster. I bawled my eyes out. lol Happy ending though: the new toaster kept overheating and never made a good piece of toast. She returned it, and we kept using our old toaster (that I had save from the trash and hid under my bed). My parents are still it today. :)
A lot of older toasters used a bimetallic strip and temperature sensor while later toasters used a timer which was more unreliable/unpredictable. So not only was the older toaster better, it was also SMARTER.

Same. In my family, we'd rather pay more for stuff that will last decades than accumulate cheap stuff that breaks after 2 years. For instance, I still got in my room the good old reading metallic lamp my mom had as a child, a model similar to Lampy's.

My family still has a vacuum like Kirby, it's heavy, but it works fine. Besides, those lamps like lampy are way better because you can move them around how you want. Sometimes the added technology just added headache, the old crap works fine.

You'd have to be pretty stupid to replace a Kirby vacuum. Those are high dollar machines. Typically ranging from $500-$1000. Which is probably more expensive than that green canister vacuum.

For they still have a purpose and still desirable and likely always still have a purpose, no matter how advanced technology gets around them for people always wanted toasted or heated slab bread and pastries and wanted to stay warm during winter and always need a light on a desk (of course Lampy will get the latest light bulbs available). But sadly Radio might be consider obsolete for radio signals are becoming digital as smart devices could pick up those signals or podcasts. Sorry Radio.
For years I never noticed they were fifties/sixties appliances. Toaster has the rounded rectangle and chrome style popular at that time. Radio is especially resemblant of that time period, with an art deco style popular during the prewar era and revived in the fifties but passe by the seventies. Blanky uses a dial while the modern appliances use buttons. The segment seems to imply that canister vacuums were in fashion at the time, while Kirby is an upright. Lampy's situation is confusing. He is a desk lamp while his "replacement" is a table lamp. Certainly both would be perfectly fine at the time.

You could say there is a karma punishment in the fact that later, we see how sad the lamp is when the Master turns down the idea of taking the "Cutting Edge" stuff with him. Even with how cruel they are to the Toaster and the friends, you have to have empathy for them for before they know it, they will become the "old" appliances, and before they know it they will end up, to quote the next song we hear in the movie, "Worthless"
Somehow ended up revisiting this part of my childhood... damn did I completely miss how anti-consumerism this movie was when I was a kid and it's somehow darker now that I can read the lyrics to the songs.
While the song takes a few jabs at consumerism, I see its theme revolving more around obsoletism. It's a real issue that a lot of older people face with each new generation. The prospect of being replaced and forgotten is a terrifying one that hits harder with each passing year. Using such a theme in a movie about sentient appliances is brilliant. The movie itself dives further, showing how people can desire something that is more sentimental and personal over another thing that is newer or functionally superior. It demonstrates that, even if you feel inferior to those that are better than you, to those you are close to, you are irreplaceable. One day, these new appliances will be in the same boat, and will be sung the same song by laptops, smart phones and LED lighting. One can only hope that they leave a positive impression on Robert "The Master" McGroarty and develop a sentimental bond with him so that they won't be forgotten either.
@@vysethegallant638 I have a smartphone, the newest consoles, a "cutting edge" PC, new VR headset, mountains of storage, etc. But But I still have every old MS and Sony console, an old wheel to go with them, old disc games, DVDs, VHS tapes, a VCR, etc. I have a sentimental bond with the technology I grew up with and even some I didn't. There s just something about feeling the click and humm of a VHS, the myriad of menus on DVDs, among other things. It just feels...right. Mechanical. They have worth to me because they are built to last a long time if you care for them.

It doesn't turn on properly (won't display anything and just SCREAMS a loud, continuous beep when you activate it), but I hope to extract its files when I can find a computer repair guy. You forgot the Keurig Coffee Maker, Smart-Fridge, Nintendo Switch which can be a handheld or big TV gaming device (it also has Hulu+ and UA-cam), and the Smart Watch which is designed to make you feel bad about not walking enough and also give you sort of accurate readings for your blood pressure and heart rate. 😜

These appliances became outdated themselves, so they might've been cutting edge for a while, but they soon were in the position of our main heroes. This whole scene is a metaphor of "you may be hot shit now but just wait, because your replacement is coming soon".
So at 2:28 they show Kirby’s “modern successor” when really it’s just a different style of machine. Kirby is a fan first upright vacuum cleaner where as the “new” one is a clean air canister. Kirby’s set up is more serviceable and cleans carpet better, where the canisters more versatile it cleans carpet okay and is more difficult to service as the brush roll motor and suction motor are in two separate pieces.
It would be interesting if Pixar remade this movie. Can you imagine all the appliances from the early 2000s meeting all the technology from today and getting this song sung to them? Most of the new stuff would point out that they don't need cords anymore. Only difference is that they would meet the fictional movie version of Siri who would be called the 'The Queen'.

This pretty much sums up animation now vs. then. All the subtle, poetic animation from the past is being shouted down and smothered under all the loud, in-your-face overblown movies that are out now with all their buzzlines - 'Super hi-def 3D!' 'More real!' 'Bigger!' 'Louder!' More more more indeed.
I don't know what cartoons you're referring to, but you can't say that when there were movies in the 80s and 90s like this one. And even the bad ones had moments of subtlety. The emphasis in most animated movies now is all on noise, action and bangs.
@@timcollum5015 there's a few versions on here ripped from the VHS. The DVD is available but there's a couple subtle edits oddly enough during "worthless". Not noticeable just the verse "there were bikinis and buns, there were weenies" was changed to "there were bikinis and hotdogs, there were weenies" and the photo of the topless woman that TV pulled out had a top added. Like I said subtle and pretty much unnoticeable but still I hate when that stuff happens.
When you consider the song Worthless this takes on a crazy meaning. By now all those appliances have made their last confession and gone through the crusher.
i don't think so. the song worthless shows that appliances don't die when they're broken, they die when they are completely destroyed. unlike cars, the appliances can be thrown away with regular garbage and unless they get crushed (i'd imagine the lamp would get this if he doesn't just go to a secondhand store) they'd just sit in piles of garbage for eternity.

Well done for entirely missing the point. EVERYTHING new will be outdated someday. Kids seem to think that their Ipads will last forever even though companies literally put updates in them to make them run slower in just a couple of years. Same with any tablet and phone.

Most people don't sew or even use lamps that often, since screens glow on their own and we do most of our reading there now. Even the vacuum could be replaced by a Roomba.

All in all, I don't think the idea that the then-cutting edge machines would become outdated quickly was intentional, since, looking through the past 30 years, only some of them have actually become obsolete. One by one, I'll go over each of them: The computer: This is the one most commonly said to be obsolete, and while it is, they've had something of a resurgence with retro being the trendy stuff nowadays...but I would still deem it as obsolete, as people are getting these computers for their obsolescence. (YES) The table lamp: Definitely not obsolete--table lamps are still produced with this design, as it's highly practical (heavy so it doesn't budge so easily, round so it can be easily carried if needed, and a fabric/paper/plastic lampshade), though ones in this shade of purple have become less common. (NO) The boom box: This one would get replaced quickly, and the retro fans seem to be going for vinyl record players over cassette players like this. In addition, magnetic data storage degrades pretty rapidly if not maintained well. Currently, a few organizations have switched back to magnetic data storage due to the INSANE amount of memory that can be kept in one (I'm talking dozens of terabytes per tape), though it's not used for audio the way this boom box would be used. (YES) The TV: Though he's on the side of the Master's cabin appliances, this guy has since been pushed to the margins, though he hasn't completely gone out of date. They mostly fill up space in thrift shops now (trust me on that, as I worked in one and saw it happen with my own two eyes), but there is still demand for them from videophiles (because they have no lag the way flatscreen TVs do) and from filmmakers as props due to their iconic look. (YES, MOSTLY) The push-button phone: Landlines are on their last legs currently when cell phones became more popular. And now we have smartphones. (YES) The entertainment center: Some parts of this have become obsolete, while others haven't. The lights, speakers, and projector are still in heavy use today, but the other parts have had much better, smaller models come out since. (YES and NO, but as a whole, YES) The colored lights: A product of the 80s. I don't know anyone who has one of these things anymore. (YES) The sewing machine: The OPPOSITE of obsolete, this design of sewing machines is among the most popular today. Anyone who is into sewing in any capacity has a sewing machine that looks like this, though rarely are they pink. Ask any serous cosplayer, and they'll tell you all about their sewing machine. (NO) The electric mixer: Anyone who cooks food and uses an electric mixer will not give it up without a fight (or if it stops working). This thing streamlined cooking like nothing else, and some foods would be impossible or incredibly labor-intensive without one, such as frosting and icing. So far, there have been better electric mixers, but nothing has truly replaced them. (NO) The canister vacuum: For the record, Kirby is an upright vacuum, and this one is a canister vacuum. Both are still popular today and coexist due to their different strengths: Uprights are less expensive and more powerful, while canisters are more flexible and versatile. Upright vacuum cleaners last a lot longer than most canister vacuum cleaners, but take good care of a canister vacuum and it can last you the 30 years. (NO) The ceiling spotlights: Did anyone catch them? Definitely still in use, but I don't think it was that popular to begin with. This specific kind is threatened by LED-powered ones, but it is possible that the one in this was already using LEDs, albeit unlikely as white LEDs were rare in 1987. Still, if someone has one, they're not likely to get rid of it. (YES and NO depending on the owner) The food processor: Still a staple of kitchens today, to where cooking shows, and web videos of cooking, assume you have one. I live in a household without one and I feel it every time I see someone explain how to cook something and a food processor comes up, and I should eventually go pick one up. Definitely beats using a mortar and pestle for these things. (NO) The toaster oven: Groceries today still have instructions for toaster ovens, with some of them designed with toaster ovens in mind. They coexist with traditional toasters too, as one will work better than the other depending on the shape of the food being heated. Toaster ovens also remain useful for being faster than traditional gas-powered ovens while not making your food soggy and flavorless the way microwave ovens do (though good food CAN come out of a microwave oven, but only if it's meant to go into one). (NO) All in all, I think the intention was not to point out that these machines will become obsolete before the main characters (it's half-and-half to me), but it's simpler than that: All of them are more advanced counterparts of the main characters, with the exception of Blanky (as electric blankets have remained largely the same since they were invented). The food processor, electric mixer, and toaster oven are newer cooking tools than Toaster; the canister vacuum and sewing machine are newer maintenance appliances than Kirby; the table lamp, ceiling spotlight lamps, and the colored lights are newer lamps than Lampy; and the TV, the entertainment center, the boom box, the push-button phone, and the computer are newer entertainment and communication devices than Radio.

@@Teknanam This was likely supposed to be a satire of 80's consumerist culture, so the hot air part probably refers to the fact that these devices are not NECESSARY and the old stuff still does it's job, while these new appliances are trying their hardest to boast about how much greater they are which is nothing more than hot air.
Two things. First off, you can now buy wifi-connected ovens, stoves, vacuums, and thermostats that you can control from your phone. Those features aren't _everywhere_ quite yet, but they're ubiquitous enough that when my parents recently remodeled their kitchen, they managed to buy an oven, a stove, a refrigerator, and a *kitchen fan hood* with WiFi connectivity completely by accident. They were all mid- to low-range models. Hell, a family friend has a WiFi-connected barbecue grill. Second, I kind of found that line in the vacuum's dialogue hilarious. "I've never seen contraptions with so many buttons and dials!" Ever since the iPhone hit the scene, an electronic gadget is seen as more advanced the _fewer_ buttons it has. Manufacturers are now in constant competition to get rid of all buttons and cram touch/gesture control into everything from phones to appliances to cars to lamps.
Smartphones make pretty shitty desk-lamps, just saying. Also, they take forever to toast my bread and do a lousy job cleaning the floor... Good alarm clock though, sorry radio, you'll just have to go back to being a fat, dumpy film critic.
You know, I don't think the purple lamp should be tooting his horn. Even for an 80s cartoon, he looked pretty outdated to me; I'm surprised the other appliances didn't kick him out sooner. Yup. They're insisting that they're so much newer and better to distract themselves from their short life spans. They may be doomed, but at least they're not as old as those other appliances. Whereas really they're in more or less the same boat, and they could work together.
I am always amazed with how advanced appliances seemed to be back at that time! While most of those appliances are considered outdated, some are still around with newer features.
Me watching this on my 10 year MacBook Pro which still feels brand new... some things are just insanely reliable. I think we've reached the point that most modern technology is also in the same position as the "old" appliances in this cartoon. Literally decades still remaining in their lifespan, ready to do some crunching, but their users and owners have just left them behind. *this scene is pretty much why my old computers and laptops become servers. 10 year old laptops with Linux do a REALLY good job as light load servers for things like small websites and Minecraft servers.*
I think that the Greatest irony is that the Toaster,Lamp, Vacum Cleaner, and even the old Radio, would still be useful today. Hell i have an electric blanket older than the movie.
The wonderful irony of this is that we still use toasters, vacuums, electric blankets, desk lamps and radios, whereas all the cutting edge appliances are long since outdated and forgotten.
For a video that was uploaded 17 years ago from a movie made even years before, this is still a catchy tune. Yet, consider how many “cutting edge” appliances have been outdated since then only to be replaced only a year or two from now by a new, more “advanced” piece of hardware.
The lamps are kind of doing the same job lampy is. The kitchen appliances criticizing toaster should realize they still can’t make toast. The vacuum criticizing Kirby only has one thing on him he can reach high places however Kirby’s model lasts hell of a lot longer then his making him more valuable. And last I checked blanket did a different job then all of them. Idk where they got the idea a blanket was obsolete.
Yep, I'm sitting here typing this on my 2010-era laptop, by the light of a desk lamp I've had for over a decade, and tomorrow morning I'll probably turn on my radio and make some toast using my toaster, and probably get around to vacuuming the floor with a floor vacuum like Kirby. You just gotta love the irony in this song. Flash forward twenty years, and Toaster and his friends will say: "Who's cutting edge NOW?"
It's interesting how the more complex and cutting-edge and "modern" the devices are, the worse they've aged over the years. The lamp is probably the simplest device, and the one that aged best - the only flaw today is a bit of an outdated aesthetic, but that's not really an issue. Similarly, the microwave oven has a pretty simple function, and probably aged fine. The boombox and computer, on the other hand, are far more complex and state-of-the-art, but the only reason someone would use them today is for their retro aesthetic - if they still worked at all. Everything else seems to be somewhere in the middle. On another note, I remember bagging groceries as a teenager and hearing this song in my head as I tried to keep up. "More-more-MORE! Everything you wanted and MORE!"
Such is the paradox that is the Cutting Edge: Once you're on it, your replacement is already on the drawing board. Right from the start, every cutting edge device is obsolete in concept, and presently, in practice as well.

The old-school appliances here (Toaster, Radio, etc) were more like 50s/60s generation. Computers get outdated and replaced REALLY fast, but a toaster keeps for 20 years. Mind you, that Toaster Oven would be cool, too.
It's ironic, at the very least the toaster, lamp, and Kirby vacuum would likely still be used or passed on to another owner. A computer from the 80's would be in a museum or scrapped

Those old vacs are pretty dusty, so unless you're using it as a garage/shop vac, a modern one would be preferable. But toaster, desk lamp and clock radio are basically beyond obsolescence. The most exiting new development for toasters was adding a setting for bagels. clock radios are basically all the same too, if it has an FM tuner, it would even be good now. Desk lamp is a desk lamp, slap a CLF or LED in it and it's good to go.
The computer would be trash in a year or two in the 80's, the Hifi when CD's become mainstream, same for mr boom-box. The early touch-tone phone would be done in favour of cordless and phones with caller ID. Toaster ovens tend to expire fast, same with cheap "As seen on TV" mixers.
Blanket though, that little guy is definitely a fire-hazard, probably stuffed with asbestos, and also likely pretty smelly and gross. Electric blankets have a very limited life span due to being hard to launder. That and they used to be very, very un-safely built.

i love how real-life kinda vindicated this. Like, most of the "cutting edge" tech, especially that computer, looks entirely outmoded. The average person replaces their computer every 4 years. Their phone? Every 2. But, stuff like the Toaster himself or the vacuum? You could see stuff like that TODAY, in all likelihood. I know people who use 50-year old toasters or vacuums, but stuff like TVs are replaced constantly.

Ironically enough, all those "cutting edge" 80's technology appliances are outdated now and probably in the junkyard being chased around by the giant magnet. Meanwhile, older model toasters, lamps, and vacuums like the ones seen here actually still hold up today and can still be functional. Old but not obsolete.

Something I think is interesting is that despite the fact that these "cutting edge" appliances are completely outdated by now, many of them would still be in working condition today. Technology simply evolved faster than these machines could break.
A lot of it comes from planned obsolescence. Most of the biggest electronics and tech companies today design or market their stuff to make you want to buy (or have to buy) new ones all the time. Its a concept from at least as far back as Henry Ford in the 1920s, but it has been key to the rise of companies like Apple (which, incidentally, was around during the time of this movie; that computer may be based on an Apple II) and Samsung (which was also around back then but was limited in what they sold outside of Korea).
For instance, software updates render some apps unusable after just two years. Samsung in particular will not update Android after about 12 months after the device's release, giving you no choice but to but a new one to keep up.
That was the point of the song.
I still remember that small article about some car repair shop in Poland, I think, that was still using a Commodore 64. No joke.
My grandmother still uses her frypan and microwave she bought in the 80's, it's outlived ours at least three-fold.

Cheap toaster ovens tend to break rather fast, same for cheap mixers. Aside from vacuum and blanket, the rest of the old guys were more or less set. How foes a toaster become obsolete? A desk lamp? Even a clock radio is fine as long as it has an FM tuner. Vacuum isn't so lucky, since upright bag vacs tend to be very dusty, maybe a second life as a shop/garage vac, since he's robust, but having a rug-beater built in, I doubt that. And electric blankets just get really gross over time, because you can't easily launder them.
All the new ones are doomed, except the ugly purple lamp, but it's an ugly purple lamp that will get tossed when it's no longer fissionable.
@@kauske Not exactly. That sewing machine pretty much looks the same as any sewing machine you'd find today. As for the stereo and phone, my family has appliances that are around the same age as this movie and still work just fine. Can't really go wrong with that several-bulb lamp either.
It depends on its features, I'm guessing it was supposed to be a "deluxe" sewing machine with "Advanced" features. A lot of those break down or are crappy. A nice machine, that does stich patterning based on metal cogs and a metal follower will last forever. That one looks like it might use cheap electronics to control the stitch pattern. Those ones went out of style and we went back to cogs, though shitty plastic ones that will break down with use.
I always thought the tall post thing was some kind of party strobe light, basically just a part of the HiFi that would get trashed along with it when it's obsolete.

When I was a kid, we had an old toaster that looked like the one in this movie. Then my mom got a brand new toaster that was modern and white with a big dial on it for changing the heat setting, and she tried to toss out our old toaster. I bawled my eyes out. lol
Happy ending though: the new toaster kept overheating and never made a good piece of toast. She returned it, and we kept using our old toaster (that I had save from the trash and hid under my bed). My parents are still it today. :)
A lot of older toasters used a bimetallic strip and temperature sensor while later toasters used a timer which was more unreliable/unpredictable.
So not only was the older toaster better, it was also SMARTER.

You'd have to be pretty stupid to replace a Kirby vacuum. Those are high dollar machines. Typically ranging from $500-$1000. Which is probably more expensive than that green canister vacuum.

But sadly Radio might be consider obsolete for radio signals are becoming digital as smart devices could pick up those signals or podcasts. Sorry Radio.

For years I never noticed they were fifties/sixties appliances.
Toaster has the rounded rectangle and chrome style popular at that time.
Radio is especially resemblant of that time period, with an art deco style popular during the prewar era and revived in the fifties but passe by the seventies.
Blanky uses a dial while the modern appliances use buttons.
The segment seems to imply that canister vacuums were in fashion at the time, while Kirby is an upright.
Lampy's situation is confusing. He is a desk lamp while his "replacement" is a table lamp. Certainly both would be perfectly fine at the time.

Somehow ended up revisiting this part of my childhood... damn did I completely miss how anti-consumerism this movie was when I was a kid and it's somehow darker now that I can read the lyrics to the songs.
While the song takes a few jabs at consumerism, I see its theme revolving more around obsoletism. It's a real issue that a lot of older people face with each new generation. The prospect of being replaced and forgotten is a terrifying one that hits harder with each passing year. Using such a theme in a movie about sentient appliances is brilliant.
The movie itself dives further, showing how people can desire something that is more sentimental and personal over another thing that is newer or functionally superior. It demonstrates that, even if you feel inferior to those that are better than you, to those you are close to, you are irreplaceable.
One day, these new appliances will be in the same boat, and will be sung the same song by laptops, smart phones and LED lighting. One can only hope that they leave a positive impression on Robert "The Master" McGroarty and develop a sentimental bond with him so that they won't be forgotten either.

There s just something about feeling the click and humm of a VHS, the myriad of menus on DVDs, among other things. It just feels...right. Mechanical. They have worth to me because they are built to last a long time if you care for them.

So at 2:28 they show Kirby’s “modern successor” when really it’s just a different style of machine. Kirby is a fan first upright vacuum cleaner where as the “new” one is a clean air canister. Kirby’s set up is more serviceable and cleans carpet better, where the canisters more versatile it cleans carpet okay and is more difficult to service as the brush roll motor and suction motor are in two separate pieces.

@@timcollum5015 there's a few versions on here ripped from the VHS. The DVD is available but there's a couple subtle edits oddly enough during "worthless". Not noticeable just the verse "there were bikinis and buns, there were weenies" was changed to "there were bikinis and hotdogs, there were weenies" and the photo of the topless woman that TV pulled out had a top added. Like I said subtle and pretty much unnoticeable but still I hate when that stuff happens.

When you consider the song Worthless this takes on a crazy meaning. By now all those appliances have made their last confession and gone through the crusher.
i don't think so. the song worthless shows that appliances don't die when they're broken, they die when they are completely destroyed. unlike cars, the appliances can be thrown away with regular garbage and unless they get crushed (i'd imagine the lamp would get this if he doesn't just go to a secondhand store) they'd just sit in piles of garbage for eternity.

@@stormgirl09 Yeah most of these either got replaced or fell out of use. Computers, radios, and telephones aren't used much anymore. Most people don't sew or even use lamps that often, since screens glow on their own and we do most of our reading there now.

All in all, I don't think the idea that the then-cutting edge machines would become outdated quickly was intentional, since, looking through the past 30 years, only some of them have actually become obsolete. One by one, I'll go over each of them:
The computer: This is the one most commonly said to be obsolete, and while it is, they've had something of a resurgence with retro being the trendy stuff nowadays...but I would still deem it as obsolete, as people are getting these computers for their obsolescence. (YES)
The table lamp: Definitely not obsolete--table lamps are still produced with this design, as it's highly practical (heavy so it doesn't budge so easily, round so it can be easily carried if needed, and a fabric/paper/plastic lampshade), though ones in this shade of purple have become less common. (NO)
The boom box: This one would get replaced quickly, and the retro fans seem to be going for vinyl record players over cassette players like this. In addition, magnetic data storage degrades pretty rapidly if not maintained well. Currently, a few organizations have switched back to magnetic data storage due to the INSANE amount of memory that can be kept in one (I'm talking dozens of terabytes per tape), though it's not used for audio the way this boom box would be used. (YES)
The TV: Though he's on the side of the Master's cabin appliances, this guy has since been pushed to the margins, though he hasn't completely gone out of date. They mostly fill up space in thrift shops now (trust me on that, as I worked in one and saw it happen with my own two eyes), but there is still demand for them from videophiles (because they have no lag the way flatscreen TVs do) and from filmmakers as props due to their iconic look. (YES, MOSTLY)
The push-button phone: Landlines are on their last legs currently when cell phones became more popular. And now we have smartphones. (YES)
The entertainment center: Some parts of this have become obsolete, while others haven't. The lights, speakers, and projector are still in heavy use today, but the other parts have had much better, smaller models come out since. (YES and NO, but as a whole, YES)
The colored lights: A product of the 80s. I don't know anyone who has one of these things anymore. (YES)
The sewing machine: The OPPOSITE of obsolete, this design of sewing machines is among the most popular today. Anyone who is into sewing in any capacity has a sewing machine that looks like this, though rarely are they pink. Ask any serous cosplayer, and they'll tell you all about their sewing machine. (NO)
The electric mixer: Anyone who cooks food and uses an electric mixer will not give it up without a fight (or if it stops working). This thing streamlined cooking like nothing else, and some foods would be impossible or incredibly labor-intensive without one, such as frosting and icing. So far, there have been better electric mixers, but nothing has truly replaced them. (NO)
The canister vacuum: For the record, Kirby is an upright vacuum, and this one is a canister vacuum. Both are still popular today and coexist due to their different strengths: Uprights are less expensive and more powerful, while canisters are more flexible and versatile. Upright vacuum cleaners last a lot longer than most canister vacuum cleaners, but take good care of a canister vacuum and it can last you the 30 years. (NO)
The ceiling spotlights: Did anyone catch them? Definitely still in use, but I don't think it was that popular to begin with. This specific kind is threatened by LED-powered ones, but it is possible that the one in this was already using LEDs, albeit unlikely as white LEDs were rare in 1987. Still, if someone has one, they're not likely to get rid of it. (YES and NO depending on the owner)
The food processor: Still a staple of kitchens today, to where cooking shows, and web videos of cooking, assume you have one. I live in a household without one and I feel it every time I see someone explain how to cook something and a food processor comes up, and I should eventually go pick one up. Definitely beats using a mortar and pestle for these things. (NO)
The toaster oven: Groceries today still have instructions for toaster ovens, with some of them designed with toaster ovens in mind. They coexist with traditional toasters too, as one will work better than the other depending on the shape of the food being heated. Toaster ovens also remain useful for being faster than traditional gas-powered ovens while not making your food soggy and flavorless the way microwave ovens do (though good food CAN come out of a microwave oven, but only if it's meant to go into one). (NO)
All in all, I think the intention was not to point out that these machines will become obsolete before the main characters (it's half-and-half to me), but it's simpler than that: All of them are more advanced counterparts of the main characters, with the exception of Blanky (as electric blankets have remained largely the same since they were invented). The food processor, electric mixer, and toaster oven are newer cooking tools than Toaster; the canister vacuum and sewing machine are newer maintenance appliances than Kirby; the table lamp, ceiling spotlight lamps, and the colored lights are newer lamps than Lampy; and the TV, the entertainment center, the boom box, the push-button phone, and the computer are newer entertainment and communication devices than Radio.

@@Teknanam This was likely supposed to be a satire of 80's consumerist culture, so the hot air part probably refers to the fact that these devices are not NECESSARY and the old stuff still does it's job, while these new appliances are trying their hardest to boast about how much greater they are which is nothing more than hot air.

Two things. First off, you can now buy wifi-connected ovens, stoves, vacuums, and thermostats that you can control from your phone. Those features aren't _everywhere_ quite yet, but they're ubiquitous enough that when my parents recently remodeled their kitchen, they managed to buy an oven, a stove, a refrigerator, and a *kitchen fan hood* with WiFi connectivity completely by accident. They were all mid- to low-range models. Hell, a family friend has a WiFi-connected barbecue grill.
Second, I kind of found that line in the vacuum's dialogue hilarious. "I've never seen contraptions with so many buttons and dials!" Ever since the iPhone hit the scene, an electronic gadget is seen as more advanced the _fewer_ buttons it has. Manufacturers are now in constant competition to get rid of all buttons and cram touch/gesture control into everything from phones to appliances to cars to lamps.
Smartphones make pretty shitty desk-lamps, just saying. Also, they take forever to toast my bread and do a lousy job cleaning the floor... Good alarm clock though, sorry radio, you'll just have to go back to being a fat, dumpy film critic.

some things are just insanely reliable. I think we've reached the point that most modern technology is also in the same position as the "old" appliances in this cartoon. Literally decades still remaining in their lifespan, ready to do some crunching, but their users and owners have just left them behind.
*this scene is pretty much why my old computers and laptops become servers. 10 year old laptops with Linux do a REALLY good job as light load servers for things like small websites and Minecraft servers.*

For a video that was uploaded 17 years ago from a movie made even years before, this is still a catchy tune. Yet, consider how many “cutting edge” appliances have been outdated since then only to be replaced only a year or two from now by a new, more “advanced” piece of hardware.

It's interesting how the more complex and cutting-edge and "modern" the devices are, the worse they've aged over the years. The lamp is probably the simplest device, and the one that aged best - the only flaw today is a bit of an outdated aesthetic, but that's not really an issue. Similarly, the microwave oven has a pretty simple function, and probably aged fine. The boombox and computer, on the other hand, are far more complex and state-of-the-art, but the only reason someone would use them today is for their retro aesthetic - if they still worked at all. Everything else seems to be somewhere in the middle.
On another note, I remember bagging groceries as a teenager and hearing this song in my head as I tried to keep up. "More-more-MORE! Everything you wanted and MORE!"
Such is the paradox that is the Cutting Edge: Once you're on it, your replacement is already on the drawing board. Right from the start, every cutting edge device is obsolete in concept, and presently, in practice as well.
