Interesting to see this mentioned. I'm Brazilian but I lived abroad until I was 13 so I had a NES. I was really surprised when I came to Brazil to that people had the master system.
There was a console called "phantom system" that was manufactured in Brazil that ran nes games. To this day I don't know if they had a license for that. The weirdest thing is that it's controller was shaped like an upside down Genesis controller with two buttons. Totally unergonomic! 😂

The Master System obliterated the NES in Europe, even outselling the NES by 4 to 1 in the UK.
I really don't agree that the games weren't as good for SEGA's box of tricks, games such as Prince of Persia which looked, played and was animated so much better than just about anything on the NES.
The MS had plenty of great games, especially in Europe which saw well over 300 games released compared to the USA barely seeing 100 games released.
Europe was dominated by SEGA during the 8-Bit and 16-Bit generations, mainly due to SEGA releasing games catered to a European audience, and Nintendo treating Europe like a wicked stepmother, it's no surprise SEGA punished Nintendo over here.
Somewhere in the region of half of all SEGA Consoles and games sold was in Europe during that era.
Nintendo just couldn't compete with SEGA's fantastic marketing and quality games like Streets of Rage, Wonderboy III, Castle of Illusion, R-Type, Sonic, and Outrun.
You just couldn't play these titles on the NES.
I prefered the Master System to be honest, the NES had some excellent games for sure, but most were catered to a Japanese or North American audience rather than what Europeans liked to play.
It's nice to see the Master System get some love as it really is an awesome console with a great library of games.
    Cheers.

I used to use Master System and Genesis controllers on my Amiga and Amstrad too.
Also, for the tiny thumb stick, I bought a SMS controller at a flea market once, and the owner had screwed a full sized screw into it, then wrapped it in electrical tape to make a proper joystick. The bottom was also covered in glue, so they must have had it like an actual arcade machine at one point too.

The cards initially came about for backwards compatibility with the SG-1000 which switched from carts(cassette in Japan) to cards because someone at sega thought the carts looked like tombstones. It was kept in the rest of the master system releases because Sega was going to offer my cards as a cheap budget game option.

  • @wingedhussar5528

There was no cross platform back in those days due to the Nintendo monopoly on developers. Essentially Nintendo forced developers to sign a exclusivity agreement with them. Eventually that got squashed and this when you saw companies that once only made titles for Nintendto all of a sudden making games for the Genesis and TurboGrafx-16.

  • @netto6681
    @netto6681 6 місяців тому +3

I’m probably late on this, but I think the card port was for games that ran on the system’s predecessors, which weren’t released outside Japan, so it was backward compatible.

    • @Mark-g7t
      @Mark-g7t 2 місяці тому

The card slot on the Master System was for small MS games (Teddy Boy, etc.). The idea was that cards were cheaper to produce than cartridges, so small games were produced on cards, larger games on the more expensive cartridges. In the end, the cards were discontinued and most of the card games were reissued as budget cartridges.
The SG-1000 did have card games but to my knowledge they're not compatible with the MS card slot. The Mark III in Japan could take SG-1000 cartridges, and SG-1000 card games could be played via a card catcher cartridge. The Western Master System doesn't have the physical means to play SG-1000 games as it uses different sized cartridges.
When the Master System 2 came out the card slot was ommitted to cut costs. The cards had been long since discontinued and the 3D technology hadn't been a commercial success, so it was considered superfluous.

The Sega Master System wasn't my first game console, but it was the console that made me a gamer.
As for the card games, I definitely had one (F-16 Fighting Falcon), and I'm pretty sure the version of Ghost House I had was also a card.
For the games that were available on both SMS and NES, I can't speak for all of them, but I definitely think SMS players got the far superior versions of Rampage, Ghostbusters, and Double Dragon.
I never had the NES gun, so I can't make a comparison. All I can say is that the SMS gun suited me just fine. I only had a couple of compatible games (Missile Defense 3D and Gangster Town), but they were fun.

SMS had a few outstanding games for its generation, and a few of the greatest games of all time: WB3 the Dragon's Trap being an example thays still playable today. The 8 bit Famicom library is enormous: it has more great games AND more terrible ones. In 2023, it's not an either/or proposition: most people will get familiar with both. If you had been a kid at the time you had to decide: with inflation, games cost 100 dollars each!

You should check out the Retro Comparison video where they compare each version of a game that released on both the NES and the Master System. Pretty much literally every single Master System version was superior to the NES - aside from a few that actually was better on the NES. The sound on the NES games was better due to superior sound chip and the games tend to run smoother, but not all. The NES benefitted later in it's life with the MMC chip upgrades that allowed it to do fancier graphics like the Master System, which never had any chip upgrades. I would also note that the Master System did have plenty of exclusive games that were amazing aside from just Phantasy Star (Spellcaster, Golvellius, Golden Axe Warrior, Zillion, Wonder Boy in Monsterland 3....just to name a few). I never actually had the pause button issue that locked the system, and no controller issues either. The same controllers i got back then still works fine now. But i do agree that it is inferior to the NES controller for missing the Start/Select button. Didn't have much experience on any lightgun games on the Master System so can't really speak on that.

@@r3games1985 In the video it sounds like you didn't like the ergonomics and trigger. If so I can totally get that. However quality wise it was quite solid although it is true that it was simpler than the NES design. The NES Zapper had an additional trigger assembly mechanism just to make the trigger feel more realistic before it clicked the switch. The Sega had the trigger directly actuating the switch which is why it has a short simple pull and a weaker click. This design did have some benefits though. It was much easier to click the trigger fast for rapid shots. Also, this allowed for holding the fire button down means rapid fire via software or hardware was possible. The Zapper's mechanism made this impossible.
I also thought the space gun look was kind of cool, but maybe that's just me 😆

Worth noting that the card based games date back to the SG-1000, Sega's first games console. But the SG-1000's designer, Hideki Sato, didn't like the way the blocky, black SG-1000 games cartridges looked, and they wanted a way to make cheaper games to sell on the market. So Sega designed the "Card Catcher," a little white cartridge into which these Sega Cards (or "Sega My Card" in Japan) were inserted. The Master System was designed to be backwards compatible with SG-1000 games, in both cartridge and card format (and even later continuing on with there being a card slot in the Power Base Converter, you could keep playing those games even on the Genesis). There were about 37 or so cards made for the SG-1000 and about 15 for the Master System. Interestingly, Sega continued making new SG-1000 My Card games all the way through 1987, making them alongside Master System card games during the same period, until ultimately they stopped making them altogether in 1987.

Had a SMS as a kid. Yes, some of us bought the games on cards. I had to have gotten it at the same place as they sold normal games, as I was a kid, so..heh.. And yes some of us had the little joystick as well. Probably for the same reason as having a card game. I had F-16 Fighting Falcon as a card. It also came with that little joystick!

The Master System was actually the Mark III in japan and card games were games of the SG-1000 (mark 1 and 2) so that's why they looked a bit primitive compared to cart based games !

Yes, I used one of those earlier controllers. The mini stick in the middle was FUCKING AMAZING! You just placed your thumb on it like you would the pad, and so you had WAY MORE responsive and easy control as opposed to having to slide your thumb around on the larger pad. I remember how sad and pissed I was when I got later controllers and they had removed that feature.

Liked the video but i disagree with a few things.
    1. The sega light phaser was way better than the zapper. The micro switch trigger was way better than the cap gun style zapper.
    2. The master system dpad was softer and 8 directions. I do agree a pause on the controller would have been nice. I never in the decades ive played the system had it freeze when i hit the pause.
    3. The games on the sms looked better than anything on the nes 90% of the time if not more. The color pallette was greater and the detail was way better. Compare the same game side by side. Sms wins easy. I wish this many years later that the difference was noticed in the 80s but nintendo had the upper hand with the license monopoly and such. It made it difficult for sega. They were left to program most of their own software.

      1) I also preferred the the sega light phaser over the zapper, it felt more responsive and accurate in aiming.
      2) I din't like both the sms and nes controller (due to the non rounded corners)
fun fact about the sms Dpad, it was round since Nintendo held a patent on it's cross style dpad, since the watch & game series.
even Sony used (and kept) it's 4 separate button style of dpad for this reason. The Nintendo dpad patent expired in 2005.
      3) Yep, beter: vpu(with more colors and abilities), cpu, ram and vram. Z80 compared to mos 6502 based cpu, 8K+16K compared to 2K+2K of ram for the Nintendo.
Only the sound was better on the nes (except for Japan where the sms had an extra FM sound chip, not available in other regions)
Original SMS games certainly looked very nice, Sega also had a good licencing deal with Disney BTW.
Later Nintendo compensated on the hardware by adding memory mapper chips: allowing for larger carts, enhancing the vpu, and allowing to add more ram and vram.
But i'm still amazed that games like Mario bros and pocket mages where possible with no enhancement chips in the cart (only using 48KB of rom)

@ChristopheVerdonck nice. Good observations! I also liked sega's jewel cases (for lack of a better term) over cardboard game boxes. Liked the soft 8 direction joy pad, and I thought the unit itself was so much sturdier and better looking. You couldn't do Fantasy Zone 2, Golvellius, Phantasy Star and 80 other games on the NES.

Did you compare Altered Beast on both systems? Dude, there were so many games on the SMS that were better than the NES, not just one! But the NES just had way better games overall because of the broad audience Nintendo was able to get early on with their marketing and their Nintendo Seal of Quality to keep the bar raised on what was allowed on the system. Publishers were willing to dump more money into the games made for the NES. SMS had way better hardware but very low budgets per title, so Phantasy Star was probably the only one that made the most use of it, from a technical perspective. The SMS couldn't compete with Nintendo itself. Even as as kid, although I could tell the colours were better on my SMS, I still felt jealous of kids that owned a NES, it just had so much prestige.

4:19 the control stick actually worked quite well and we used them on our controllers. I still have my original controllers...with the stick and they work quite well. I have never heard of anyone having issues with them breaking any quicker than any other controller of the same age. The only controllers I ever had issues with breaking were the 2600 and 5200 controllers. Also, what is your source for your statement that the SMS games that were the same as the NES games were not as good? The general consensus is that they look and play better. Furthermore, your assessment of the light phaser is completely off. The Zapper has better ergonomics? You obviously haven't tried playing a game from start to finish with that hunk of garbage. The tension on the trigger wears your finger out. It's awful. The quality of the library of SMS light gun titles blows that of the NES out of the water.
Disappointing video. Factually, it needs some work. The NES bias is way too strong.

Examples. The SMS had a more accurate to the arcade version allowing you to play 2 characters at the same time instead of player 1 then player 2 after 1 dies then back to player 1 after 2 dies like the NES. The backgrounds were also more arcade accurate on the SMS which has a larger color palette to work with in it's graphics. The SMS wasn't about the same as the NES it was better except for sound, at least in the US. Non US nations had a superior FM sound chip that was better than NES but the SMS in the US came with one that was pretty much the same as the NES.

You could do this all day with the same titles between the 2 and SMS looks better in pretty much all of them. SMS had a pseudo 16 bit processor (2 8 bit in it's 1 cpu while NES had 1 8 bit in it's 1 cpu). 16 bit's in that it could handle 2 8 bit processes at 1 time while the NES could only handle 1. The SMS had a larger color palette to work with as well with more fore and back ground colors available to tap in to. You saying they looked pretty much the same is either you not having cross platform games to compare or laziness in research before making the video. What the NES had was a MUCH larger library and a larger customer base having come to America a year after the NES. At least here. I know the SMS was more popular in other countries than it was here but it's not because it was a same same comparison. The SMS was better graphics and game play wise. It was just late to the market and didn't get as many games.
