- Unbeaten Middleweight World Champion and Houston-native Jermall Charlo defended his WBC 160-pound title via a UD victory vs Brandon Adams on SHOWTIME.
WBC World Middleweight Champion and Houston native Jermall Charlo couldn’t have been happier to be fighting at home-and the love was reciprocated. A raucous, sell-out crowd of 6,408 at NRG Arena watched Charlo overcome a fearless Brandon Adams to win a wide 12-round unanimous decision.
This was Charlo’s first fight at home since March 2012, when he scored a fifth-round TKO over Sean Wilson. Adams, who won the series five championship of The Contender series, was a far stiffer challenge. Yet Charlo still won comfortably in the main event of the PBC on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing card.
“[Adams] had a chin,” Charlo said afterward. “The contender was real, but this is a different level.”
Indeed. The combatants spent much of the first sizing each other up. A Charlo right uppercut snapped Adams’ head back toward the end of the round, but the challenger simply smiled after tasting Jermall’s power.
Charlo (29-0, 21 KOs) won the early frames via activity but appeared to be pressing, hoping to score a statement KO in front of fellow Houstonians. His eagerness worked against him in the fourth as Adams landed a series of lefts-both jabs and hooks-throughout the round.
“I hurt my left hand in like the second round but I kept throwing it,” Charlo revealed. “It was obvious my jab wasn’t flowing.”
Yet Charlo bounced back in the fifth, working that stick, which has knocked down several previous opponents.
Charlo began timing Adams’ onrushes in the middle frames. Adams briefly halted the momentum with a hard right to begin the ninth. But the champion took over, boxing well behind the jab and unloading combinations once he closed the distance.
A right hand in the 10th stunned Adams and brought the crowd out of their seats. The Los Angeles, California resident used his legs to survive. Still, Charlo dominated the championship rounds to win by scores of 119-109 and 120-108 twice.
“He came out to box. I came out to fight,” said Charlo. “It was a good fight. The city of Houston, I’ll be back. I worked for this. H-Town, I love you all.”
Adams, 21-3 (13 KOs), was gracious in defeat.
“I was coming up here to win. I was coming to try to take him out in his hometown. He did what he was supposed to do, he’s a champ for a reason and I take my hat off to him.”

Yes youre always gonna be correct in a situation like this, that was his only chance to win but he knew hed give charlo more chances to catch him in between during and after though. I dont feel he couldve won no matter what but he def needed to let his hands go more period.
That was his first 12 round fight pacing himself and stamina could be a factor matched with his height and reach disadvantages

Yeah and he did it too. Something most don't do against the " hit man" ...might not like it but you can't deni the fearlessness in which adams fought with. Charlo hit him with shot after shot that's dropped the rest of his opponents and adams kept coming forward. It's just good to see a challenger show up unafraid and actually challenge for a change. Hats off to both fighters

I’m curious, what makes you believe that? Because from a boxing standpoint Jermall Charlo is a tough matchup for Canelo. He does a lot of things that Canelo doesn’t like. Styles make fights.

@@pedromagallanes6999 It’s one of the two or three biggest fights in boxing to make. Canelo is used to fighting at 168. It would be new for Charlo, so that’s an advantage for Canelo. But all things equal, Charlo has the height, the reach, the quicker feet and most importantly the athleticism to be able to beat Canelo. He also has the jab to make life very hard for Canelo. Canelo can counter better than Charlo, and probably has quicker hands, but he is gonna have deal with that excellent jab of a Charlo as he closes the distance. We’ve seen before what a good jab can do to neutralize a big puncher. Errol Spence used it to dominate Danny Jacobs.GGG used it to give Canelo a lot of problems, Austin Trout used it effectively against him. If I had to guess, the fight could be a little like the Golovkin fights were, but. Charlo is more dangerous than Golovkin because he’s bigger, has better footwork and has the ability to throw those devastating little short shots inside. If you haven’t seen it before, you should check out the Charlo/Julian Williams fight. The punch he knocked Williams out with is a perfect example.

So the jab ggg and trout had wont have the same affect on canelo now. I see charlo the bigger man getting walked down. I'm sorry brotha but I gotta disagree. Adams didn't even try to win this fight. When you're the challenger you don't average 27-35 punches per round. Adams had no sense of urgency in this fight. Even in that last round knowing he needed a knockout he fought no different than any previous rd. Reminded me of Jacobs. In the biggest fights against GGG and Canelo he appeared just happy to be there.

Charlo's last opponent Montiel didn't have half the talent of Adams and yet he fought Charlo tooth and nail for 12 rds because he wanted to be a world champion. Broken nose, jaw, orbital bone didn't matter to him. Montiel lost every round but he had heart. He showed a will to win. Adams showed no will at all. I hope He NEVER gets a title shot again because clearly he doesn't want to be World Champion bad enough.

Idk what everybody is saying about him being a good boxer. His stance is too wide and he’s slow moving on defense. Didn’t box smart in this fight to me. Adams clearly was trying to stay low all fight but instead of using uppercuts or punching to the body he kept head hunting for the knockout and Adams head movement was on point. Needs to work on his defense for sure or it’ll catch up to him
