If you live in japan or if you have that kind a facility on your area then do it. But if you have either of those previledge then goodluck find alternative
I wish they would implement the Gunpla recycling program internationally. I know it's a far fetch, but maybe it'll be a great start for them to start collecting plastic trash for their chemical recycling solution. I'm happy that Bandai is funding research and experiments on alternative plastic, it could be a great solution, but the longevity, quality and cost would be the biggest question.
The best thing you can do is put some plastic cement in a container and let your sprue runners sit in it for a while. It'll turn into something called "Gundam Goo" which you can use for detailing. It's great for recycling and it's actually pretty effective!
its already on the cheaper end of model kits, like most 1/144 would cost you around 10 dollars or less meanwhile a warhammer figure with less plastic and no colors would set you on average 30 bucks and up, gunpla is a relatively cheap hobby kit and that says a lot considering they spent years to master the engineering that goes into each kit and they still maintain a cheap price while also improving its quality over time, if not for shipping which is double the price of the product itself XD
@@ordinaryjoh Not to much you can melt the plastic with acetone. All they have do do from there is make it thick or thin enough to do injection molding.
I also started recently and have 22 kits of runners kept in their original boxes. I have a problem with throwing all of that plastic away so I hold onto it for testing paints and whatnot.
It sure is bad for my wallet environment. In Japan there are special recycle boxes with a Haro on top where you can dispose of your runners so they could be reused in the future.
About the alternative plastic, it also needs to meet the specs of many different types of plastic used in different kits. Modern reprints of older kits still for the most part use the different older formulas for the plastic, so they feel quite different to work with and I can imagine it might be difficult adapting every old kit to use a new type of plastic
I have 11 gunpla as of now and nothing go to waste. I use the box as storage for extra parts, manual and cover box that I will use as wallpapers once I have enough. I use runners as custom stand, custom weapon/parts and even for filling the gaps Plastic also use as bag to segregate extra parts.
The amount of stuff I throw out is insane. I usually keep clear runners and use them for custom stuff. I also keep some relatively clean straight and curve runner pieces and since most of them are 3mm, they are good thing to have. I keep the boxart part of the box and I also try to find other use for the bottom of the box (Like using them as box for gifts or storage). Been waiting for the "Gunpla Recycling" thing to be available in my country and I would gladly give them all the empty runners I have.
I save my runners. Grind them up in a blender and mix them with epoxy. They make great platforms or space filler for my 3d printing projects, shelves, and stuff like that.
I don't dump my runners so I don't really see how it's bad for the environment, if anything is bad for the environment its every brand out there that uses plastic packaging and plastic containers not the sellers of plastic-based products like model kits which hardly take up a percentage of the world's waste products that end up on the environment
Glad to see people talking about this subject. I was thinking about the amount of runners that likely go to waste everyday and it gave me a slight internal crisis lol
I like to scratch build accesories and weapons for my kits by using the leftover runners, like a spear, a small hammer, a double barreled and even a fishing rod.
that is one problem from this hobby. but i just think about recycling it to make 3D print plastic material. because3d print kind popular now and it can make some optional part for random kitbashi.
Get politicians to ban planned obsolescence and you’ll make an effort that is equivalent to the entire planet’s population a hundred times over in ‘enviromental activism’. Yet not a single politician talks about it. Must not be that important then.
I know that Lego recycles Medicine bottles to make their products. Maybe Bandai and Kotobukia and all model kit companies should take a lesson from Lego and follow suit. And maybe even give us consumers an incentive for taking our runners and trees back to them.
I’m only getting into gunpla, but I’m making a scale models of aircraft and i use leftover runners to fix some things and for a little kit bashing. But it would be nice to be able to recycle stuff because realistically you don’t need that much of a spare runners
Me to Bandai: My expectation of you was low but holy shiz, you disappoint me. ( Mainly due to P-Bandai releases since Most of the kits nowadays is P-Bandai or Gundam Base Limited )
Here is a good way to save on money and use the runners. So what I do with my leftover runners is turn them into action bases which is awesome because I don’t have the money to buy the models and the action bases at the same time so this is a great solution
To be fair it's not Bandai's fault. It's the consumers. We keep buying and they keep making. At least they're trying to do something about it. But when it comes to the majority of consumers, I only know 2 other person besides me who actually recycles their runners in a sea of thousands of gunpla builders.
There are hobbyists willing to purchase your runners…they usually use supper glue and melt them down and cast their own custom parts with them. Japan has a history with “garage kits”, that’s how PBandai developed a market. You could also use them as structural supports for other models, just a few friendly suggestions and observations. It all starts when you buy the kit…
If I knew of a local place I would. However until I become aware its out of sight and out of mind. Im all for alternatives as well but theres only so much room in my brain to care about certain aspects of life.
