It's a pastiche of horror movie cliches, some given a British twist, many a surreal twist.. It's also extremely metropolitan-centric propaganda in a sense.. It's very anti small town life, cruelly caricaturing it. It's kind of Little Britain with more joined up storylines for each character, all set in a horror movie. A few actors played all the characters, and they're all strong characters too. It's a masterful example of the mundane turned into intriguing mystery and lots of laughs black comedy.
Should definitely watched as whole it’s like a sitcom with sketches that all join up to make a surreal comedy drama, which is very dark in tone and can be very creepy! It is one of the best BBC comedies ever made!
Roy Chubby Brown wasn't one of the writers. It was written by the cast and a guy called Jeremy Dyson, who is part of the group but doesnt appear on screen. It originally started as a BBC Radio 4 show called "On The Town with The League of Gentlemen", but Tubbs and Edward weren't in the original radio show.
Just to add to this comment ,the town in the show is named after Roy "Chubby" Brown's real name Royston Vasey. He appears in one( maybe 2) episode as the town mayor. But that is the only connection he has with the show.
KB, the show is like a dark comedy / part-horror soap opera. Some of the characters are easier to get into than others on first viewing, but after 1 or 2 full eps you will almost certainly get swept into the dark madness of it. Overall it is an outstandingly funny and clever series. The three main actors have talent oozing out of their ears. The actor in this clip you recognized from Game of Thrones is Mark Gatiss, he co-created the BBC series Sherlock (2010-2017). League of Gentlemen has lots of horror film references in it too. That 'We didn't burn him' sketch with the Scottish police officer investigating a missing person is a nod to Edward Woodward in 1971's cult horror film 'The Wicker Man'.
Thing is The League of Gentleman needs to be watched in its entirety rather than in clips. There’s an ongoing narrative throughout the whole set of craziness
The actor that played the Police Officer is called Mark Gatiss he has played a fair few characters but his most notable would probably be Mycroft from the BBC iteration of Sherlock but he's also been in shows like Dr Who and Game of Thrones.
Absolutely love The League of Gentleman, I grew up in a village in the Ribble Valley in England and it just reminds me of the local shop there. For locals don't you know!
0:16 So glad the King finally hit puberty ! 😂 Mark Gatiss is the actor you were talking about and yes, he played Tycho Nestoris, the Iron Banker. He also played Sherlock Holmes brother in the BBC series, Mycroft, he also wrote on the series with Steven Moffat. He also wrote and acted in episodes on Doctor Who. Reece Shearsmith (who plays Edward, the pug-nosed shopkeeper) also appeared in Peter Kay's Car Share and appeared in Spaced with Simon Pegg, along with many other things.
Hi there Didithathurt here and thanks for playing both the clips I suggested. I was supposed to be Didthathurt but had a keyboard stutter when I made the name but I didn't bother trying to change it when I realised it had the extra 'i' in it. Its my gaming name and I'll be streaming on Twitch soon with that name. The series really needs to be watched each episode in its entirety else its difficult to keep up with all of the dark sort of scenes, the taxi driver Babs is one thats really strange, its a bloke transitioning and he/she dresses as a woman in pink but has a hairy chest, really big dockers hand and a really deep voice. The vet Mr Chinnery ends up killing every creature he goes to save, the tortoise one is brilliant and funny plus another scene I can remember when he sets off on his bike and a dogs lead is caught in the bike and he drags it along, later on he's still riding and the lead is dragging along with one big bone still attached.
I'm glad that you suggested this to King Boomer, but you know now that Roy 'Chubby' Brown had nothing at all to do with the creation of and writing of this incredible show? It is on a level way above anything he ever did.
Chubby Brown's real name is Royston Vasey, which the towns name is named after in the program (the writers are fans of his). He did abit of acting in it as the Mayor. The three main actors you saw wrote the storyline for all of the program, along with one more that doesn't play a character (I think he is in one as an extra). The wife is Steve Pemberton, who plays Mick Garvey on a comedy/drama program called Benidorm. Full episodes can be reacted to and put on here, I've seen atleast two channels do it. If you want something even more weird and kinda funny in a weird way by the same people, try 'Inside No.9'.
Are you sure that the writers are fans of Chubby Brown's? I think they just named the town after his real name because they thought it was a funny name? Or am I wrong?
@@JGG3345 I've heard both, but I think they started saying that after people heard who it was named after. He's not really that politically correct and some people being.....

The guy playing the policeman was Mark Gatiss, an actor and writer. You are right, he was in Game of Thrones (Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank ) and Wolf Hall (King’s secretary ).
Great series, but Chubby Brown did not have anything to do with the writing as it was written by the three main actors plus Jeremy Dyson. He did appear in one episode as the Mayor of Royston Vasey. The three in that clip are Reese Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss who are the writers and play most of the characters. Gatiss has also written for Sherlock and Doctor Who.
I believe that these clips only work if you’ve seen the entire thing, in which stories evolve across the run of the series, and there are a colossal number of threads. Same with season 2 and ‘the special stuff’ plot. Series three are self contained episodes that only resolve at the end of the series. The Christmas special is a portmanteau of Hammer influenced comedy/horrors linked by ‘The Curse of Karit Pur’ which explains why the local vet, Mr Chinnery is so hapless and unfortunate (and funny). Good luck these days with getting Papa Lazarou on a YT reaction, although he is the stuff of nightmares and most fans favourite character. Me? Seriously dude, generally speaking, British shows hold more weight per episode because our "seasons" are considerably shorter, and there's zero throw away scenes from each episode. I'm not saying American shows are throw away, but with 25 eps per season generally speaking, there's a lot more room for filler. Where's British shows have a tighter budget and are a lot more focused on the story threads, especially in serialised shows like League of Gentlemen, where there's an overarching story woven within the episodes and even the separate seasons. Just for reference, my favourite American shows are Quantum Leap, Married With Children and Friends, maybe even 3rd rock from the sun, from the 80s and 90s. Sometimes watching a clip from a British show can be like watching a clip from Michael Jordan, having a bad game in the 72 - 10 season.
Whoever told you Roy Chubby Brown "helped write" the series is completely wrong. He appears in season 2 a few times but never wrote anything at all for the show.
This series is dark and an acquired taste, not one that's easy to just drop into for clips. Its set in a fictional town called Royston Vasey, which is Chubby Browns real name. The actor you recognised is Mark Gatiss, he has been in many films and TV series, including the ones you mentioned.
The police officer is played by Mark Gattis he also co writes the show with the rest of the cast. He also writes for Doctor who as well as acting in it as several different characters and he also co wrote and co starred in Sherlock as Mycroft Holmes brother of Sherlock Holmes. He has also acted numerous tv dramas / shows most of the the cast have been in episode of of doctor who and other comedy & dramatic show.
It's just one of those shows which doesn't clip well, but it's a work of genius, hence it's HUGE cult following, easily on my top ten all time UK favourite sitcoms list, to get into it though you really need to start with episode one and immerse yourself into their dark and unsettling world. I used to visit my grandmother about once a fortnight as a kid in a town like the one in the show, so for me it's like reliving my childhood, yes remote UK towns can be a little like this, that's why I find it so funny! 🤣
This is one of those shows where you need to watch it from the start to get the context of it, the 3 actors you seen in the clips, play multiple characters throughout the series. It's brilliant
Erm, who on your Discord said that Roy "Chubby" Brown helped write the series? That couldn't be further from the truth if anyone tried! Shocking disrespect to the LOG! He did turn up as an actor in series 2 though as a minor character, and was very funny. The actor you recognise is Mark Gatiss, and yes, he was playing the young man in the earlier sketch - he is indeed that character in Game of Thrones, he's also appeared in Sherlock, Doctor Who and many more.
His name is Mark Gatiss, he’s been in loads of programs and films and is a prolific writer too. Very talented guy. The league of gentlemen was really dark and strange but I loved it. Was one of my favourite shows.
This is a very Northern England show. So some of the humour may go over your head because it may not be universal. But it's a great show and just watch the full episodes.
You need to watch the whole series from the start. It's a series of sketches but has a story arch. One of the funniest and darkest things that's ever been on british TV
as has been mentioned, I'd suggest watching a full episode and seeing how you feel. this show is a little too random too make sense in clip form. but definitely worth a watch.
You seem somewhat confused by this show, it is absolutely hilarious, so brilliantly written and acted, but it is an acquired taste. it's black humour combined with superbly executed 'ham' acting, if you ever watch a Hammer Horror movie that meets dark comedy. l just love the way she blurts out, "we didn't burn him" . Stick with it, it's quite theatrical comedy gold.
It's the best show! Mark Gatiss is the guy and he was in Game of Thrones in the iron bank, in my opinion Little Britain stole a lot of ideas from the league of gentleman so to me it will always be the best! You need to see legzakimbo and Pauline in the job centre!! :)
Had a fall slipped in footed onesie, in so much pain, relying on your recaps to keep me cheerful. Hope recover soon as Christmas could be ruined. Sympathise with you as you have back pain too.
Dodgy info KB- the town does take its name from Roy Chubby Brown's real name, but he had absolutely no input into the writing of the series. It's really not CB humour. 😂 A great series though.
Yeah you saw him in GOT. He was also Mycroft in Sherlock if you've seen that and he was in Doctor Who where he played a WW1 soldier. He's a great actor, very under rated
That guy is Mark Gatiss. He is the guy in the Iron Bank in Game of Thrones. He co-wrote Sherlock and plays Mycroft Holmes in it. He also wrote a lot for Doctor Who, he and the rest of The League of Gentlemen have appeared in Doctor Who episodes. The League are him, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson. They wrote and play most of the characters. Royston Vasey IS Roy Chubby Browns real name and stick around for a guest appearance, but I don't think he wrote any of it.
You're right, the guy playing the cop played the first character you see coming into the shop. That's Mark Gatiss who, alongside this was indeed like you said in Game Of Thrones and you were right about the character he played. He also was in a show called Sherlock plus tons of other stuff.
This episode has references to the film "The Wickerman with Edward Woodward. Edward Woodward played a Scottish policeman who goes to an island to search for a missing child. The stars/writers of this series always have influences from many british series, and hammer horror films.
I wouldn't worry about Bottom. It's "comic" violence, I'm sure UA-cam isn't bothered about that. The only thing is the copyright, because it's BBC. But I've seen other reactors upload their reactions, so I don't think it should be a problem.
Mark Gatiss (the hiker and the policeman), Reece Shearsmith ( The male shopkeeper, Edward) and Steve Pemberton (The female shopkeeper, Tubbs) are the main 3 actors who play ALL the main characters in the show. They also co-wrote all the series too along with Jeremy Dyson. Chubby Brown didn't write the series but did star in a few episodes as the Mayor. To really get the show, you need to watch it all from the beginning but like with most BBC stuff you won't find full episodes of it on UA-cam. In fact BBC stuff can be quite hard to find on UA-cam, aside from a few clips here and there. A shame really because there's lots of TV gold from the BBC.
Roy Chubby Brown had a cameo role in the show as the town Mayor but the writers are the three actors from these clips (they play almost all of the characters) and the shows director Jeremy Dyson. You were right about the actor playing the hiker and Policeman, Mark Gatiss. He was in Game of Thrones and also acted and wrote for Doctor Who and the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock series.
It's a sensational show and if you get it, it's a thing of beauty. Wacky, surreal and hilarious. It is only several actors who play all the parts. It's worth checking out whole episodes to get a handle on the characters, although it's probably too long for reactions?
The actor who plays the rambler and policeman is called mark gattis and is one of the writers, he specialises in horror, he has had a few dark dramas on tv
Roy Chubby Brown wasn’t one of the writers of the show, although the League Of Gentlemen named the town after him. He also appeared in the second series.
Roy Chubby Brown's real name IS Royston Vasey, but he definitely wasn't involved in the writing of the series. As a side note, I grew up in Alston, Cumbria (Northern England), which is the inspiration for the town in the show lol
That actor you recognised is Mark Gatiss - he's been in a lot of series. One you didn't mention that you might have seen him in is Sherlock. This series is basically where he made his break in television. And yes, he played Tycho Nestoris in Game of Thrones and was in Wolf Hall.
Mark Gatiss, the cop/hitcher. His work includes writing for and acting in the television series Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Dracula. Together with Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson, he is a member of the comedy team The League of Gentlemen.
This is definitely a show that should be watched as whole series to make sense.
It doesn’t so much shock you as creep you out
Yeah, you can't watch bits of context.
It's still funny but somehow less disturbing.

He is the iron bank actor. He’s in a lot of things!
Before I even react... The LoG is a story and both requires and is fully deserving of full episode reactions.
This series is dark and an acquired taste, not one that's easy to just drop into for clips.
Its set in a fictional town called Royston Vasey, which is Chubby Browns real name.
The actor you recognised is Mark Gatiss, he has been in many films and TV series, including the ones you mentioned.
This series and Bottom are my 2 favourite shows from my childhood. Reminds me of my dad who passed away
Please keep on with it KB! I think it will really grow on you… there are a lot of wild scenes! Very very funny.
Once you’ve watched The League of Gentlemen, you’ll never leave 😂😂
Scared the life out of me this when I was a kid😂😂😂
Scared the life out of me when I was an adult 😂😂
OMG Thank you!!! you finally got to the League of Gentlemen!!! yay lol Anyone who has seen the show do you remember the Greek 444244 :D
Bottom is extreme slapstick. League of gentlemen is dark in the extreme. Far more dangerous. 😁
This is one of those shows where you need to watch it from the start to get the context of it, the 3 actors you seen in the clips, play multiple characters throughout the series. It's brilliant
Papa Lazarou is a great character in League of Gentlemen
'...Maybe there's a less injury prone clip of Bottom?' ......Er, no! LMFAO
The police man is mark Gatiss , a brilliant actor. Sherlock Dr who and Dracula 🧛♂️.
You need to watch the whole series from the start. It's a series of sketches but has a story arch. One of the funniest and darkest things that's ever been on british TV
A modern classic in every way . A carnival of grotesques for the ages !!
as has been mentioned, I'd suggest watching a full episode and seeing how you feel. this show is a little too random too make sense in clip form. but definitely worth a watch.
Attempt 6: 'Facejacker' or 'Fonejacker' are worth a watch 👌
This is a local channel for local people!!!
And there is ABSOLUTELY NO familial resemblance between Edward [ shop proprietor ] and 'Tubbs' .
You're right, the guy playing the cop played the first character you see coming into the shop. That's Mark Gatiss who, alongside this was indeed like you said in Game Of Thrones and you were right about the character he played. He also was in a show called Sherlock plus tons of other stuff.
Not seen this since I was a kid, so dark and twisted I loved it. Still game would be a good show to try
Roy chubby brown dancing and rap a must watch King boomers
Just to confirm, Chubby Brown was not a writer, he acted in the show as the towns mayor.
The actor who plays the rambler and policeman is called mark gattis and is one of the writers, he specialises in horror, he has had a few dark dramas on tv
You’ll love this series. Please do an episode reaction 😊😊
Roy Chubby Brown wasn’t one of the writers of the show, although the League Of Gentlemen named the town after him. He also appeared in the second series.
You both need to see the tortoise sketch 😅
