    Which rules have you heard when it comes to layering skincare?

    • @warriorsrule9350

      Just finished watching your skin types video. Excellent info BTW. Do you recommend washing the face twice a day with a face cleanser if you have an oily face. I went to get a facial once with an expert ex-dermatology nurse who was into skincare now and who after analyzing my skin told me that I have a good oily skin that helps with fighting aging. If my skin produces all those nice oils that prevent aging, it seems washing them off defeats the purpose. Would you recommend washing my face only once a day? Or just using water instead of a cleanser (at least in the morning)? And how would you incorporate this into a skincare routine involving using Tretinoin at night. You have to wash before you put Vitamin A on, and probably wash the face in the morning to remove it. Can I just put an SPF-15 lotion in the morning without washing the Tretinoin off my face? Thank you Doctor Anne.

      My skin is no longer as oily as it used to be (thanks to Tretinoin and age), and I wash my face only at night. In the summer, when it is very how and I am sweating at night, I use it in the mornings too, but if that doesn´t happen I don´t feel the need and want to keep my skin protected by ist natural oils.
      I also don´t think you need to wash off the Tretinoin in the mornings, by then it has done its thing already.
      Just the SPF 15... I never wear less than 30, most days 50. 15 is not a lot, especially if you, like you mentioned in another comment, suffer from hyperpigmentation.

      @@DoctorAnne Hello Doctor Anne. Thank you so much for your response. I greatly appreciate it. Yes, I think I am going to follow your advice and only wash my face with a cleanser at night. In the morning when I take a shower, I will just let the water drip on it. Nothing beats natural oils. 😉
      Regarding the SPF, I agree with you. 15 is low. (Merely 94% of UV protection). But here is my routine, I use an SPF15 lotion protection because I like the milky consistency of this moisturizer I get from Trader Joe's, but then after, I apply a 22% Non-nano Zinc Oxide Mineral sunscreen which provides a physical UV protection of SPF50. I don't like to apply it over my whole face because I don't want to look like a clown with that white thick paste all over my face, so I only apply it over the Hyperpigmentation areas on my face and neck. And the most important thing I do is: I avoid staying in the sun like it's the CoronaVirus. I used to love the sun and used to stay in it as long as I could until my skin warned me that this was a very bad idea. So I heeded its stark warning and never looked back.

    I saw in a video once a dermatologist say to use organic sunscreens before moisturiser if you are going to use a moisturiser because the sunscreen needs to interact with your skin. I started using a moisturiser before sunscreen though and letting it dry first because I think you are just going to wipe away some sunscreen if you did it the other way. Most people can just use sunscreen as their moisturiser of course.
    My layering would go hyaluronic serum, moisturiser, sunscreen (sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen etc. throughout the day). At night hyaluronic serum, moisturiser, moisturiser (maybe moisturiser again). Sometimes I use a 10% lactic acid serum before the hyaluronic serum.
    A 2% salicylic acid liquid exfoliant (Paula's Choice) arrived today. It is the "anti-redness" one - the extra strength was out of stock which is probably for the better. The only difference seems to be that the "extra" strength which is also the classic one has a higher concentration of penetration enhancers and less humectant ingredients. The pH is also more acidic in the extra strength (3.4 vs 3.9). I have learned that pH doesn't affect salicylic acid and it could function at a pH of 5 even but the lowet pH will just cause more irritation. Used it after shaving today and no stinging or irritation at all; less irritation than any other acid I have used. And I probably would use it in the morning because it could possibly give some minor UV protection.
    When the salicylic acid is finished its job I will likely try tranexamic acid to see if it can fade freckles at all.
    I went to the UA-cam video criticising the UVA protection and it was actually about the UVAPF being 22.6 when the SPF is 89. From my understanding that means you can spend 22.6 times longer in the sun before tanning, which seems like fine protection to me.

      The sunscreen before moisturizer issue has been brought up several times, with both sides having good points. I use my sunscreen last because I let it dry for at least 20 minutes before applying anything else and that would be too much of a wait in between skincare steps for me in the mornings. Truth is that all sunscreens are tested on bare skin for their efficacy, so we can’t 100% say that they will perform the same after a moisturizer (or serum for all that matters). I still think applying it last (and then reapplying throughout the day) is the most practicable way.

      @@DoctorAnne How about the double whammy! A moisturizer that has a sunscreen component. It is what I use.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +2

      That depends on how much moisturizer you use. You need to apply the correct amount to get the protection on the bottle, which is around half a teaspoon. I recommend you measure that out, I did and never apply that much moisturizer. If you apply less, you will get significantly less protection, which is why I tend to go for a separate sunscreen.

    Hi Dr Anne, my routine seems long... I must confess I do have dermatitis or scleroderma overlap dermititis. Do not have the symptoms of scleroderma thanks God. Just the skin playing up with hyperpigmentation and discoloration 🙅🙅🙅. I start start my routine with a cleanser then a toner (clearly corrective exfoliating from Kiehl's and deep hydration rose toner from fresh)... then, black tea kambucha essence, then I mix my hyaluronic acid with vitamin C ( from the inkey list). I then, apply the mixture... Follow by clearly corrective dark spots (from Kiehl's) sometimes I use either the deep hydration rose moisturiser (fresh) or turmeric powder moisturiser (the inkey list) to complete my day routine.🙈🙈 In the evening well, after cleansing my skin I spay it with the (Fresh) vitamin nectar antioxidant then (Caudalie) vinoperfect Essence, then vinoperfect serum and then vinoperfect dark spots correcting cream... I do have dermovate that I am supposed to use but I don't know where to fit it 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ please HELP !!! MAYDAY 😲😲 many thanks...

      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +2

      My first step would be to scale back at the product you are using. Dermovate is a steroid cream aimed at treating acute inflammation, and should not be paired with much else. A gentle cleanser and if needed a fragrance free moisturizer after you applied the Dermovate cream, but nothing else until your skin has healed, and afterwards checking in with your doctor for a follow up.

    I have been applying my products from thinnest to thickest but the only issue I am having is incorporating other serums with my Vitamin C like for example do alpha Arbutin or niacinamide mix well with Vitamin C serum? Also, other than niacinamide is there anything else you can use that will work well with a Tretinoin? Thank you so much for your work as it is so appreciated.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +2

      For Vitamin C it depends on the type of Vitamin C you are using, L-Ascorbic Acid can be tricky, but in general they can be used with both Niacinamide and Alpha-.Arbutin. I have a whole video dedicated to that, if you want to see more.
      And for Tretinoin: No, it is only Niacinamide that has shown beneficial effects, and of course Hyaluronic Acid, but none of the others.

    Hi Anne so do we apply our retinol after cleansing on dry skin then use serums on top . I have been use the ordinary buffet with copper peptides waiting a minute for it to absorb then applying my olay regenerist retinol 24 cream

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  3 роки тому +2

      If you are using a strong retinoid (Tretinoin i.e.) I would not pair it with copper peptides. Otherwise ti depends on what you want - directly on dry skin gives you the most effect, using it after other skincare reduces the risk of irritation through buffering.

      I would not pair any prescription (antibiotics or retinoids) with another active without talking to your dermatologist, so no, I would not pair Dapsone with Vitamin C. And I would not recommend using a menthol cream on top of a retinoid, that might increase Irritation.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +1

      I have not tried it myself, so I can’t really comment on the product itself, but I would mix Vitamin C powder with something like Hyaluronic Acid rather than one of the options you mentioned if we are talking „mixing it into something“. You could of course use the powder mixed in a HA serum and afterward the peptides or the toner.
      I have a video on combining ingredients up if you want to know more.

    Another question, do I need to apply sunscreen even if my daily makeup routine has sunscreen in it? Like would still apply sunscreen under a cc cream that has spf 50?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +3

      That depends on how much of your makeup you apply. If you apply half a teaspoon of CC Cream to your face, you get SPF 50. If you don´t (and I bet you don´t because half a teaspoon of any makeup looks awful on the face), you will not get enough protection. I always wear a dedicated sunscreen and then apply my makeup in a light layer.

    I'm so happy to finally found your channel. Thank you for educated videos.
    My question is that I read somewhere during my research that skincare layering is also by pH order, so am I understand correctly that layering from acid, thin (watery), thick (creamy), and oil last...or mix acid with other skincare to neutralize the pH, by water-soluble acid with watery skincare and oil-soluble acid with oil? still confusing for me trying to put it together in my head. Thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @DoctorAnne

      In my opinion pH doesn´t matter too much if you don´t mix in the palm of your hand - skins pH takes a long time to adapt, so other than using very alkaline cleansers (which I do not recommend) I don´t pay attention to the pH my products have.
