    In this series, I will be teaching my Malinois, Arih, Scent Detection. I'll break down each step in a format that is easy to understand, but more importantly, easy to implement.
    In episode six, I will be explaining and demonstrating how to easily teach your dog an indication. This is a clear behavior that the dog will perform the let the handle know that the dog has found the odor.

    Thanks so much for doing this video. Can't wait to work on this. I also watched with my reactive GSD and haven't been able to watch dogs on TV without him barking and lunging for the TV. While he did bark and got amped up, I was able get him in a down, watch you and Arih while I plied him with treats. Will keep proofing that until he gets desenstized to seeing dogs and TV and no longer reacts.

    Phenomenal video as always nate, I love this scent detection series. I've got a few unrelated questions, I noticed on your website that you're based in LA, given that its the movie making capital of the world have you ever trained a dog for an acting role in a movie, like for ex Marley's dog actor in Marley and Me? Would you ever be interested in doing so? Or (probably shoulda leaded with this question) do dog trainers that specify in training acting dogs even exist??😂 It would be super cool to see a series on that I imagine it would be pretty difficult to train a dog to pretend to be bad, while actors are all screaming at the dog not to do the behavior they're actually supposed to do for the role.

    Hiya Nate! First off... thank you SO much for all these super helpful videos. It's so unbelievably kind you shoot and post so many of these for free. Thank you thank you! But I do have training question. How many days should we be training each section before we move on to the next? And also, how can I best get my dog to do a down stay? For my Mal I always have to tell her stay, which I was told is redundant by another trainer. I've tried to get her to down stay without saying "stay" but she just won't. And when I do tell her stay she'll stay for a while... but then break command after 5 or so minutes.
    Thank you again for all your videos!!!!

      Here is a video I put together on adding corrections using either a martingale collar or pinch collar: facebook.com/nathan.schoemer/videos/10213850487672790/
      For additional support, I would suggest joining my Facebook UA-cam community group. This is a group of people that have studied my training philosophies and principles. This is a location to discuss your dog training goals and endeavors with other like-minded people. To help support the group, I will be doing live Q&A’s every few days or so. Here is the group link: facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers
      Lastly, if you are unable to get the results that you need using reward-based training techniques, then you may need to use corrections. Remember, everything our dogs do is based on motivation. They are either motivated to access something pleasant or motivated to prevent something unpleasant. Whichever factor is the most motivating will determine the dog's behavior. If you feel you need to add corrections in your training, here are some online resources that will teach you how to do it correctly to maximize your results:
      Here is an online course that will teach you how to correctly use a remote training collar:

    Please keep making more videos. I have been obsessed with research for dogs for the past year sense one was left at my door steps. I live in a shady neighborhood, and I thought it best to start her on guard dog training, (I know that was wrong) the man who gave me the puppy gave me barbaric advice that through her first twelve weeks I'd smack her butt, rub her nose in her own potty, and even holding the puppy down and biting her ear.. after seeing no results (after her primal learning age) I started research. She barely trusts me but prefers my gf (due to my dumbass trust in the advice I was given) this is my first dog I've ever had being my responsibility. I understand I have messed her up, she exhibits signs of abuse every day and it breaks my heart. When we first got her I slept on the floor next to her crate. This dog is my whole life. I know I messed her up, but I'm also the only one who trains her (only positively) it's just the crucial moments of her life, I know in the dog world, was abused, and it kills me every day. The reason we have our dog at all is because my buddy came over, (acted suspicious) and pulled a puppy out from under his jacket. Said he couldnt keep her (we both live in an apt complex) because he had very young son with another on his way with his gf living in a one bedroom apt. He gave her to me because he said he'd never get an extra room for their family once they find out they had another dog (they had gotten rid of two for the same reason).
    It's just with the advice I was given I didn't feel the need to research.
    So far, I have been doing behavioral as well as training (which is how I found you) every single day for the past 11+ months.
    I am passionate about dogs and it's the only thing I've ever been able to keep an interest with. They deserve more than .. oh I dont want him anymore he does this (without even trying to distract that behavior with another) too many end up in garbage bags and at the end of the day, that's what we see from shelters.. 50 a day minimum from every shelter you've ever heard from (apart from no kills which are incredible but stop excepting pups once they're full then ppl abandon them on the side of the road) I want to be able to learn their behaviors, study it, and do something about a dog being jailed for christmas..
    If I'm able to help my dog, I will help every dog I get the chance to.
    I only have a years experience and a 1000 hours of research.
    Where did you learn? Can you help me?..

      Hi, Jordan. Thanks for your comment and for supporting my channel. I learned to become a dog trainer by attending the Tom Rose School for professional dog trainers. It's a very challenging course, but well worth it, if you're willing to put in the time. The next class will be starting in April 2021. There's a good chance that I may be one of the instructors for that course. If so, I hope to see you there! :)

    I just found this. Really excited to teach my dog. I don’t quite understand the first bit about putting the tennis balls in a container with an odor. Why not just put the odor on the balls. And what do you use for odors? Something like essential oils or some kind of meat or what. Thanks.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому

      I was using lavender, but you can also buy scent kits online for nose work training. If you use any oils, just use one drop and don't put it in a location where the dog can lick the actual oil. Use a container with a cotton ball for the odor. If you want to put the odor on a toy, then put one drop on the inside of a lidded container and keep the toy in the container overnight. This way the toy will hold the odor, but the oil won't be directly on the toy. I hope this helps! Cheers!

    Hey Nate, my girlfriend and I are watching all your videos to prepare for our German shepherd puppy in 3 weeks. I assume things should be trained in order of the Basic Obedience playlist (followed by Advanced playlist), but were not sure how much time we should be dedicating to building a good foundation and to each command. For example, when should I move on from engagement training, or is it something I do consistently all the time?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +5

      Thanks, Chafik! I will usually do engagement training for the first day or so. Before every session after that, I will spend 15-30 seconds doing engagement training to get the puppy in the right mindset to train. Then I start shaping all the commands I would like the puppy to perform with the physical cue (luring, leash pressure, fixed shaping, and free shaping). once I know I can get the puppy to do the behavior with the physical cue, then I name the command. Lastly, I use the leash pressure to reinforce behaviors. The time all of this takes will depend on the dog and the trainer. Don't stress yourself out by assuming the puppy should learn at a certain speed. Just work at the speed the puppy is learning. I recommend training your dog throughout the dog's entire life. I try to get in at least one obedience session with my dogs each day. It helps develop an incredibly strong bond and it also helps keep the dog mentally stimulated, which is very important when it comes to having a balanced dog. I hope all this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. 😁🙏🐶🐕

By moving them around I think hes trying to guess which one it's in sometimes. But then gets up to try the next. I do not reward him. But when he does get it and he knows hes got it, he wont move until "free". Is it your suggestion that we just pull away from the search and start again?

      Yes, I don't reward when they guess wrong. As your dog understands the game more and becomes more confident, then he won't guess as much. With enough reps, he'll stop guessing, because he'll be more confident in the exercise.

    I have a question with training medical alert scent. Would the indication be come to me and do a nose press. I understand the down and the sit indication. I am not clear how I would make the nose press alert on my body work. Should the dog do the nose press to the center block, can, box, and then put the scent tin in my pocket and transfer the nose press to my body later?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 місяці тому

      To train your dog to use a nose press as an indication, start by teaching them this specific behavior. You can use a targeting stick or sticky pads to guide them. Once they've mastered the nose press, introduce the odor you want them to find. After the dog detects the odor, prompt them to perform the nose press just like I demonstrated in the video. Dogs excel at recognizing patterns, so over time, they will learn to associate the scent with the action of performing the nose press.

    Question: if a "bookmark" with an odor is at a height of 1-2 m, how will the dog show the source of the odor if it is trained to lie down? A similar question: how will a dog show if the odor is in a pile of piles or on the ceiling of a car? Thank you.

    Hi Nate, what happens if someone else puts the odor in one of the containers, and you don't know witchone? By telling Arih to down next to the right container she knows where it is. Or if the odor was in two (Or more ) containers. Or is that a next step? Thanks a lot for all your video's!! Love, jb

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +3

      I wouldn't have someone else hide the odor until I know Arih is proficient at the training. Also, I would have the person there to confirm it is the correct location before I rewarded the dog. I'm telling her to down in this video, but over time the dog learns the process and will indicate without the added help. Thanks for supporting the channel! 😁🙏🐶🐕

      Same way I teach her to down as an indication. First you have to teach your dog to bark on command. Once you do that, then ask your dog to bark when getting to the odor. :) ua-cam.com/video/HeVWMcwbf1w/v-deo.html

    Nate. I’d like to train my dog to be a protector like a police dog but not to worry about him being too aggressive. Can a dog learn to be a protector as well as a living service dog?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому

      You can, but most professionals would advise against it. It's just too much of a risk or liability to do protection training with a service dog. However, if you want to do protection training with your dog. Then I would suggest joining a protection club. You can find local clubs with the links below. Cheers!

    Nate, have you yet answered the question of what scent you have chosen in your training process?
    Is the FIRST scent chosen for training important?
    If so, why?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +3

      I'm just training Arih on scent detection for fun and the videos, so I'm using lavender. If I was to train her to be a drug dog, then I would have started on a drug odor. Since Arih is not a working dog, then it's not an issue. If I was training a working dog, then I would only be teaching the odor that the dog will be required to find while working. 😁🐶🐕

      You can teach one odor in the beginning and add new odors later or you can do the cocktail method. This is when you teach the dog all the odors together.

      I’ve watched a couple of UA-cam channels where they work with multiple dogs in the room, yet work one dog at a time. Clearly the dogs can discern if they’re being spoken to, with a little bit of practice.

    Dear Nate I just wanted you to get some feedback from another person using your videos to teach their dog. I have a 3 year yellow lab and he is my partner for work. I am on numerous taskforces as well as a Det. Sgt. in my local Sheriff's Office in Ohio. I am an investigator for only crimes against children, I am part of the FBI violent crimes against child as well as Internet Crimes Against Children taskforces in Ohio. My dog is already trained to assist whenever a child has been through a traumatic event in their lives. He can open doors, get toys, turn on lights as well as get tissues if the child is crying, ect. So he and I have taken on learning scent detection for digital devices such as flash drives , SD cards and any other devices that can store child pornography. I wanted to know that we have watched and learned a lot from these videos and he has been doing very well. We have only been doing this for two weeks but it seem like he has picked it up fast. Thank you again!
