Hi, this is my review for the Logitech MOMO Racing wheel, a sim racing wheel that came out in 2005. Can this old generation hardware still handle today's racing games? And how good is it really? Let's find out as we take a close up look at this classic wheel and pedal set, and test it in a number of popular driving games!

My advice as a g29 user. Dont buy it if you already have the momo. Its a good wheel but imo whole point of buying a g29 is if you're not sure if you really are into simracing or not and after buying the g29 you will either like simracing and buy better one or not be into simracing and you can sell it easily and im pretty sure the momo will do the same. I bought g29 3 months ago and i already bought csl dd and fanatec pedals and shifter.

Just dug it out of my parent's attic. Found it in the dustiest corner underneath a pile of boxes and it still works perfectly like I remember it as a kid. Started getting back into racing gamed and sims recently, and remembered that I used to have a wheel somewhere, I just needed to find it, and I'm not disappointed. Wound up on this video just because I wanted to see how it compares to modern wheels that I've never tried, and while I can't say anything about those other wheels, I would say this video sums up the Momo wheel pretty perfectly, and mine was not well looked after. I abused it as a child, left it to rot in an attic, found it again and it still works exactly as the video describes.

Very fair review of old hardware. I own one, was sold it back in 2006 for some RFactor racing and was glad for it at the time but recall it having all the issues you mention. I still have it but haven't been into racing sims much, although feeling like getting back into it. I think I will pass it onto someone else who wants to get into racing but doesn't have much money and start to save for a entry level logitech wheel, or something similar.

Using a borrowed one from a friend. Was fine for Forza Horizon 5, but feel like it is holding me back in ACC. Currently looking at the T300RS GT set from Thrustmaster, but still hesitant to actually buy one :/ And yes, when your backend starts sliding it's basically game over with this wheel.
Edit: Following some of the suggestions in the comments really helped. Left overall strength at 100%, reduced spring effect strength to 0%, set damper to ~30% and disabled centering spring. Much better experience now, albeit with less pronounced ffb. Worth it though.

  • @attilapuskas
    @attilapuskas 4 роки тому +11

I still use one like this for PC and AC. A piece of advice if I may... default support for this wheel in more modern games got pretty bad in regards to FF, but if you do a proper setup for it then it will make a very significant change. I have to argue that feeling the cars slip and countersteering is very much doable by feel. I don't know how ACC does it, but for AC it needs a wheelchecker log file to generate a custom LUT file for the game. Set gain to what is comfortable and not to weak (140-150 for me), also drop all other sliders (roar/kerb/slip...) to 0 otherwise they will be overpowering and do not use the "Enhanced Understeer" option. If you have a copy of AC give it a try it will make this wheel usable, and you will feel a lot more detail from the FF (like you said for the kart game, it does have the motor for it, it just needs the proper setup).

    • @attilapuskas
      @attilapuskas 4 роки тому +4

It looks like he's not interested (no reply) so I'll try to explain as best as I can:
First, you need to generate and use a lookup table that is specific to your wheel.
Just follow the instructions on this page: www.racedepartment.com/downloads/lut-generator-for-ac.9740/
This will make sure that the force-feedback is linear so you won't have any deadzones for the effects, so it helps you feel the small things that normally aren't present with the MOMO steering wheel by default.
Make sure to set Logitech profiler before you generate the LUT file:
      Effects Strengths set to 100%
"Enable Centering Spring in Force Feedback Games" UNTICKED!
      "Report combined Pedals" UNTICKED!
"Allow Game To Adjust Settings" TICKED!
The second part is making sure that the correct settings are used in-game.
For me, the game settings are the following:
Gain 140% - You want to set this to the highest value that is not bothering you when you try to countersteer
Filter/Minimum Force/Kerb Effects/Road Effects/Slip Effects 0% - These are all present even with 0%, these slides just amplify the effects. If you want more then you could set them higher, but don't go overboard with them. 5% for most effect will be too much and will have distracting effects or will result in unwanted wheel movement that will affect your lap times in a negative way.
ABS Effects 2% - this was the only one where I needed more than 0%. Remember that this will be felt only when you are driving a car that has abs and it is turned on
For a bit more detail of each effect, you can read this: www.reddit.com/r/assettocorsa/comments/5l64g8/this_is_how_the_ffb_worksand_how_to_set_it_up/
The LUT file does help with any steering wheel so it is highly recommended. And remember that every wheel is a bit different so play around with the values and use the ones that are best for you. The ones that I provided are the ones that work best for me.
One more thing that might be important:
Download DXTweak2 ( www.avsimrus.com/f/misc-24/dx-tweak-2-v4-30-229-1506/download ) and make sure that your pedal sliders are not acting in a strange way. My potentiometers are not always setting back to 0 (in the software that would be 255 since the axis' are reversed) so I had to set the calibration for the Accelerator and Brake to Min=0, Cen=113 and Max=225. Otherwise, I got unwanted brake and/or acceleration input from time to time that made the cornering unstable ( hugely upsetting the balance of the car ).
I hope this helps you to enjoy racing with your MOMO :)

I'm still using this, though the internal switch for one of the shift paddles is broken so I can't shift using that paddle. And yes, there is a fair bit of resistant from the gears when turning the wheel. So if you need to change directions quickly in races, either turn down the force feedback, or use more strength from your arms....lol.

Hello, I take out off the box my MOMO Racing after 15 years and is in perfect chape, the last week I start again my racing games and a lot off Racing Room from Steam. It works and yes the force feedback is poor I need to put the breaking sound and the tires sound louder to get the input of the car. and I get the time that is impossible to improve because of the pedals. No feeling on the break and constant lock tires. So for me this is one off the best racing wills for the time, for our days is great to start to learn, to get in to this world. A really peace of hardware to understand the evolution to our days.

I downloaded ACC + Nordschleife DLC because they are on sale. I remembered having a wheel back in the day so today I went in the shed and found a Logitech MOMO Racing wheel with pedals stashed in a box. I downloaded the drivers, which to my surprise were still available on Logitech's website. I fired up ACC and tried the wheel. Didn't really like the feel at all, so I looked for tips on YT and found yours. Many thanks for posting the review. I didn't know e.g. that you could fasten the wheel like you showed. One thing you forget to mention is that you cannot access "Steering Wheel" -> "Axis Properties" unless you set a Game Profil first. Now it's time to do a lot of tweaking so it's hopefully somewhat usable to play ACC with.

I have a Logitech MOMO and until a week ago it was my racing wheel. It was good but like you said, on more serious racing sims the counter steering is its biggest drawback on games like Assetto Corsa and Project CARS, really... it's nearly impossible because you always give it more turn than you need to correct. Now I have a Logitech G920 which is still an entry level wheel but worlds apart with its 900 degrees of rotation and a more refined force feedback effect. For less serious games like Forza and Gran Turismo (yes, it works on PS3) it works nearly perfect, since those games are more forgiving and dampen a bit your movement.

Assetto corsa has a wheel gamma setting (makes the virtual wheel turn more progressive on higher angles while still being able to make small adjustments around the center). On the momo this makes a big difference. 1.3 is what i'm using.

I had the "for PS2" Driving Force Pro with 900 degrees back in the day and that one had the heavy feel to it as well. Wasn't until the G25 that they figured that out. To this day that's the biggest constraint of that wheel and the MOMO, the wheel being slow to rotate when countersteering. Pedals actually look really similar to the DFP and DFGT ones, wouldn't be surprised if they're compatible.
With that said, I still LOVE the aesthetics on this one. I dare say I prefer how this looks compared to all the modern Logitech wheels and some of the Thrustmasters. I wish Logitech did like a remake of the MOMO with the modern internals and pedals.

I still have my MOMO. There is so much resistance when trying to turn the wheel that if you start to loose the back end in high speed and have to snap the wheel quickly to save from spinning out, the wheel will not turn fast enough due to this extreme resistance. You can over power this resistance but then something inside the mechanism slips and the wheel becomes off-center. Even with all force feedback turned off (much less resistance) there is still enough resistance to get the wheel off centered in a snap-steer situation. Great wheel in it's day but the high resistance and noisiness are quite strong negatives.

i got a momo like 5 years ago for $50. i used it for old arcade racers like cruisin usa, then got bored and put it away until 2020 when i got into sim racing. it does the job well enough to have fun as a rookie. the pedals are very soft so i modded mine with rubber bands, and added a wedge under the brake spring. it helps reduce the floating foot feel.
ffb is rattley and loud. i set mine to focus on tyre force and grip (slip effect) instead of road bumps.

I bought mine pretty much when this wheel was released in my country, so reckon I've had this wheel for close to 18 years. Sadly my pedals finally called it a day and no longer work, and now looking for something new.
Just an Update, this wheel isn't officially supported on Windows 11, you can install the latest Windows 10 drivers, but a lot of the tweaking that you could do in Windows 10 like you showed is greyed out. Now you can only adjust the base FFB settings, and set the pedal to combined pedals (I prefer them as individual). You can no longer tweak the inputs like you could in Windows 10. But yes, all the latest games do work, except Dirt 5, but Dirt 5 is so much of an arcade game you're better off using a controller anyway.

PS my GT is used and works nicely, but every once in a while it doubles my downshifts on the paddle. The force feedback is fantastic in GT4, but slightly underwhelming comparitively on Enthusia with the high setting. I love the 900°, gets frantic and realistic on hairpins.

The only disadvantage in Logitech Momo is the small rotation , only 240 degrees , however they have great grip in the wheel and great Force feedback , the quality come from the good Logitech from the past , because the last years the quality from Logitech products is not good.
I have Logitech Momo 15 years and working perfect with no issues . Also i have the Logitech G29 and is very disappointment. The G29 they have very poor Force Feedback , very bad grip with thin wheel , and quality is low , the only advantage from G29 is the 900 rotation degrees and the good pedals , nothing more .
