The eerie silence when you get out of the indoor areas in Moon. Just staring at an empty void in complete silence gives me chills. Not only that, it legit feels like you could just start drifting away into nothingness at every wrong move.
@@Somyeol_EP09 Ayo this game was the game that made me know Ascension and Call of the dead since I couldn't get BO on PC, shit slapped aside from the pay to win
I remember as a kid with overprotective parents I had to play with gore turned off and voice volume off so they wouldn't hear the characters swear. As a side effect there were no zombie groans or Samantha announcer which somehow made it way scarier for me. Getting snuck up on and having no light hearted quotes made it feel 10x more isolating and unnerving.
Sheesh, that sounds nuts. When I was super young I played a Spyro the dragon game that had a shadow realm - couldn't get past the greyscale and lack of any normal noise. They did a great job of scaring the pants off my younger self.
There's a glitch that can happen on Shi No Numa where the dog rounds have no introduction. The map just suddenly becomes foggy and you hear the teleport sounds. This happened to me the first time I played so it greatly added to the scariness.
Another small detail about the Main Menu. When you're in the campaign section, it's pretty well known that if you just mash your aim and shoot buttons, mason will break free from the chair and can walk around the interrogation room. When you choose zombies, *You can't.*
no way bro oooooo so spooky and creepy. bruh even in the fuckْing champaign mode you still can't get out from the chair, you think you discovered something new?.
I personally believe that Blackops 1 had the best zombies feel and tone. Every map was eerie and ominous compared to what we have now. The limited knowledge about the plot and characters made things more mysterious and scary in my opinion.
I especially like how the 4 DLC maps make you more and more isolated. Ascension is a Cosmodrome which is likely built in the middle of nowhere, CotD is at an abandoned lighthouse in Siberia, Shangri-La is literally a mythical place outsiders don’t/can’t go to, and Moon is well, the moon and you’re the only ones alive there.
I remember how much BO1's Zombies menu was both really cool and really terrifying when I saw it for the first time playing at my cousin's house. Seeing the interrigator walk away and a zombie take his place, banging at the glass, what they had playing on the tv screens and the menu music. Best. First Impression. Ever. Was the main reason why I wanted BO1 and why I still play zombies to this day.
The funnest thing about the Moonman is that he’ll sometimes use the names of the people on your friend list. Just picture it. Your best friend has turned, and he’s coming for you. And he’ll get you, eventually.

Ever since I first played this game, I always thought that Mason himself turned into a zombie when you selected the Zombies mode, with the colors turning yellow like the Zombies' eyes and that horrific, fleshy noise that plays when you open the gamemode. Now, Mason's first person doesn't change, but maybe that's just because he's early in the infection process. Or maybe young me just had a really hyperactive imagination.

All of the floors in “Five” tell a story, the offices were evacuated and everyone is gone and zombies just got to the floor, the war room looks like some got away but zombies were starting to break out of the basement. The basement lab is where everything started.
What it makes it kinda funny is how literally everyone said “fuck it” and ditched the president to save their own skin Even the secret service said “you’re on your own, sir.” Lmaooo

My buddy and I always waited until round 20 to activate the hidden song. Mowing down hoards of zombies with 115 blasting in the background is a feeling that can not be replicated
Another scary thing from the main menu: it totally shows how alone and screwed you are. Not only there's a Zombie bashing the glass at the top trying to eat you, but then you realize that the pictures the TV's show are from no other place than the Pentagon itself, meaning that you're trapped in there like a tomb. Even if you escaped the zombie, there's still an entire building full of undead you'll have to escape from.
@@polpottopg not gonna lie, this would have been a pretty cool idea, you break out and it activates a unique map, single player exclusive where Mason has to escape the Pentagon
The reason why the zombies in Ascension can dodge your bullets is because some of them are military. They move out of your line of fire, that means THEY STILL REMEMBER THEY’RE TRAINING. I find that really creepy and unnerving. They still… Remember…
The way you described every feeling of horror in these maps was honestly perfect and eye opening. I will forever look at these maps as scarier than I remember because holy shit

The "Void Barrier" is actually just straight up a black room. There is no lighting bug, the textures inside the room are just pitch black. Less scary and more just lazy to me honestly. The barrier in the dressing room with the pounding is easily the scariest part of Kino for me.
I think that it plays on the human mind. It just lets you wonder what's in there, and lets you theorize with what you see around the map too. Tho yet again, you could be right and they just got lazy
I found the spawn room of five to be like a safe room of sorts. No matter how many times you play the game, youll always start in this preserved, undestroyed room, fully lit with lights and knowing that few zombies will spawn. If you decide to come back after turning the power on, youll quickly find that your "safe place" is now completely gone, as the tv monitors show static or error messages, lights flickering between dim lights and darkness, all while the quickly moving and bullet absorbing dead are surrounding you on all sides. Your safe place has become a death trap, and will be your grave should you decide to stay for longer than a few moments. Say goodbye to the room you once called safe, for everywhere you go now, you're running from your inevitable demise, and you'll die tired.
BO1 Zombies really struck a perfect balance between the sheer horror and feeling of dread that WaW had and the off-the-walls mysticism and depth that would follow in BO2 and 3.
I miss how the older maps had new and different animations, pretty much every map from the start of waw to the end on bo1 had unique zombie animations and it was a really cool touch.
for the dressing room stuff, i've always thought that maybe someone locked a zombified friend or something in one of the boxes, and the zombie has been trying to escape since the incident
I never saw the interrogator as a zombie, I always thought he was still human, but he was banging on the glass for help. If he was a zombie you would not only hear the groaning noises but also see his glowing yellow eyes in on his black silhouette, either way it is still terrifying
yeah, but if you catch the right moments you can see his walk cycle is a zombies while the interrogaters is human. Its a cool detail either way and I love sharing opinions with other fans. Have a great day.
I always thought the Grim Reaper was like the entity behind what was happening in Kino. I also always felt like it was watching and that there was more hidden secrets in the map that people hadn’t found yet. That’s another thing I miss and hated about newer zombies. The creepy ness was Gone and the Easter eggs where just thrown in your face. When Bo1 was the newest zombies I used to spend hours on Kino and five trying to figure out the knocking and if there was anymore Easter eggs to uncover
I've heard of people who go into abandoned buildings and explore. The fact that the blood in Kino is red fresh instead of brown and old makes me think that a group of those people went isln and never came out
Interesting... Come back and play!!! If you are not only about the Horror, but about EVERYTHING BO1 Zombies, may I UA-cam suggest:... MY LIFE WITH NAZI ZOMBIES, the Ultimate Guide to BO1 Nazi Zombies!!! The best resource you're going to find on the subject, Not even kidding!
one of the things i wish you mentioned with “five” is some of the easter eggs in the laboratory area. for example, you showed part of where they did testing for the winters howl, but you can actually find prototypes of the weapon on the tables around that area, and you can also see plans for how the americans reverse engineered the ray gun from the nazis at der riese. there are ray guns on shelves that are subtly there. also, if you look through one of the barriers in the labs you can see a teleporter from der riese. it also explains why the teleporters are random on five, it’s because the americans couldnt figure out exactly how to precisely teleport you to a specific location, like the nazis at der riese or kino! it just adds to the overall zombies lore about how after ww2 americans took plans and things from group 935 and tried to reverse engineer teleporters, ray guns etc to help in the cold war. it just adds an extra layer of creepy because you know so many people were here trying to re do what the nazis did but to no avail. all went wrong in the end and that’s why it’s so desolate.
Well, to add on the horror of Kino… the map is set in Berlin, and yes, the wall you see at the end before the next map comes for its review, is the Berlin Wall… I’ve always found that particularly terrifying, that a place like Berlin, which has buildings that still seem to stand (despite being only 15 to 20 years after WW2), is totally empty and all you have is the remnants of Nazis in the form of zombies…
Bro the Black Ops 1 transition to the zombies mode is SOO fucking legendary bro like the music still gives me chills and gives me nostalgia x10 😭 like the shit is so nostalgic it deadass makes me sad and depressed that Im getting old bruh Im currently 20 yrs old this game came out in 2010 LIKE I WAS 8 YEARS OLDDD 😭😭 man the memories and fun video games really brought me is priceless
Moon is the most creepiest and scary map I've played as a kid. When I saw the rockets flying towards earth and seeing it broken apart that was once a home sweet home became a huge mess of flying rocks floating into the infinite abbess of outer space haunted me. Knowing that no one survived the horrific rockets slowly making it's way to earth from the mistakes you cause just for one man to reach his goal on becoming the controller of the walking corpses to rule the entire universe and timeline. You just left there to die with limited amount of oxygen given to you and only so much ammo to keep yourself defended from the hordes of the undead. If the zombies don't kill you then the slow suffering of gasping for oxygen will. Space is creepy!! Why do birds sing even though the world is ending? Zombies Moon Map is really good. (Finished the easter egg by myself in BO3)
It’s atmosphere is on point! Surprisingly though, there were survivors on earth after moon (like the Tranzit characters,) who had to suffer through a new harsh way of life and was also probably very confusing for them too as to why the earth randomly blew up haha
I really like the moon map, but what I dislike about it is how really dark it is especially inside the base, the astronaut (nazi zombie) is the worst to fight against because he headbutts you and steals your perks which I really hate. But what I really like about the moon map is definitely how slow the zombies are lol.
Describing Five as a haunted house is so perfect, it feels like a high end Disney or Universal Studios haunted house, where the first floor is like the queue area where you wait in line and just take in the environment, then the next floor down is like the room where you would board the actual ride or something, and from there you descend into the absolute horror of the Five labs, brimming with human experimentation victims and horrific sights, only to turn on power and escape through the portals. The map is such a unique and intense experience
Ascension has been and always will be my favourite map in all of black ops. Something about the map and it’s isolation, how the zombies are designed, the monkeys and the ee song just blend together perfectly.
This game was incredible. So many times throughout this video I thought to myself “They don’t make em like they used to” When I guess it should be “They can’t make em like they used to” It’s sad but, we can be glad this game did it so well. Ps; please make these videos for Bo2 and 3!
Yeah nothing is gonna match the same horror vibe as WAW and BO1. Also I plan on making more, problem is zombies was transitioning away from horror post BO1. So if I make more I would probably do Tranzit, Mob and Buried in one video (since they are the scary maps from BO2,) and then BO3 would probably just get a stand-alone video about zetsubou no shima considering that’s the only horror based map on that game.

@@TheExceptionalGamer I’m very late to replying to your comment, but I would suggest origins for bo2, something about the desolate atmosphere, medieval crusaders coming to ravage you and the remaining survivors, no one’s coming to save you.
@@lemo_squeeze9890 thanks, I’ll have to think about it. There is something there for sure, hopefully there is enough there to merit it’s own section cos I have a theme or idea for every BO2 map except for origins
This isn't something specific to any map, but Samantha's story in general is terrifying when you think about it. Richtofen was driven insane after only touching the MPD, Samantha was stuck inside it for well over a decade at the point of BO1's story. Plus, we don't know what the MPD was like at that point in the storyline's development. BO3 retconned it into being a device created by the Apothicons as a connection to the Dark Aether, but the original vision for the insanity caused by the MPD could have been much darker. It could've been one of those things where time is warped so even just hours could feel like years. If we look at the EE songs as a potential source of lore, Moon's song is a good look at just how much Samantha was affected if we assume it's from her perspective. We don't even need to look at lyrics, Coming Home is a notably more difficult song to listen to even for metal standards, with the verses standing out for just how "ugly" and harsh the screams sound. It really solidifies just how beyond pissed and completely insane she is.
And don't forget how the Cosmonaut zombie makes the quiet but terrifying breathing noises you always hear when the rest of the zombies are dead. I ALWAYS check my back when I hear that noise
The zombies in the barrels are probably a nod to the film return of the living dead, where the zombie outbreak starts from a dormant zombie in a similar pod. That movie also Used the song partytime by 45 grave, which was later used in Call of the dead. It's a really awesome punk rock zombie film I'd totally recommend it.
The pods also remind me of a movie called The Phantasm. If I remember correctly, the Tall Man, who’s the bad guy has his victims in pods to experiment.
@@robertcortez4956 yes and I believe return of the living dead also might have taken inspiration from that but don't quote me on it. I just figured the corpses in them being zombies and because we know that group 935 was able to subdue some zombies and probably threw them in pressurized barrels to preserve them. The actual model of the zombie in the barrel also just looks really damn similar to the tarman before he escapes the barrel. Fuck I love that movie I should watch it again
The tattoos on the zombie monk in the Himalayans are called Sak Yant abd tied to Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. These tattoos are believed to bring protection and many other factors. Btw cool video I’ve never played this game before so it’s cool watching and learning about it
Cant thank you enough for watching. The tattoos are really interesting just by the designs. But now knowing the meaning adds a scary layer of irony to the zombies. Thanks for sharing!
The containers on kino are actually an early nova crawler design, you can see them for few sec when teleporting in der riese( 2d images flashing sometimes) and we even found a unused model in the waw files "no textures yet sadly". Instead of being failed experiments on pigs they would have been actual humans turned into monsters and storaged in tanks (possibly as a bio weapon, since they are made out of nova 6). Takeo even reference theirs early human designs, meaning they got changed pretty late during developpement.

The containers used for the early nova crawler designs could also be a reference to the move Return of the Living Dead. The outbreak in those movies being released from military containers that had infected test corpses inside of them and when one of them failed it unleashed a gas form of the infection.
@@MamaGrell1992 The gas isn't a disease but a chemical that was meant to be used as a herbicide by the military. Corpses got accidentally exposed to the chemical 245 Trioxin, the military realized the zombies were unkillable, and so just trapped them in barrels instead only for a few of the barrels to get accidentally sent to a medical warehouse.
I believe the reason why the zombies being able to dodge and dive roll in Ascension and only Ascension is because many of the zombies were former Spetsnaz soldiers - they perform specifically Spetsnaz military manœuvres, and the Spetsnaz in the campaign even do this.
My favorite map is moon but the thing that gave me the chills is how everything is just super quite and how you can also hear the ambience really clear even in Area 51 you can still hear the ambience for some odd reasons
8:52 I also like how they took pictures of real life Germans surrendering and then edited it to make them into zombies because a human soldier and a zombie are quite different. Humans have the capability of self preservation, but zombies do not. Zombies don’t care how well armed their opponent is. Zombies don’t care about how injured they are themselves. They will stop at absolutely nothing to try and kill you and their persistence makes them a massive threat.
34:46 "Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling. Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all."
You know in retrospect, the idea that either Hudson (or possibly Weaver) being zombified is still more reasonable to me than his goofy-arse death and Menendez' plot armour
9:54 the poster is really fitting, given that the tale of Faust is about sacrificing your spiritual and moral values for power and knowledge, especially since in some legends/versions of the store, Johann Georg Faust himself was a necromancer, sacrificing his morals and values to bring the dead back to life. Very fitting.
I think Ascension's zombies (i theorize) dodge your shots is because, judging by their outfits, infantry or soldiers. And take in note that only those wearing military fatigues dodge, or at least I never saw a lab coat zombie dodge. The fact that dependingnon their previous knowledge zombies can do different thing is genius and... well.. as we soon find out in CoTD and later on, on moon and then MoTD, this isn't just a one time thing. Romero, Xx_Butdevourer278_Xx, Warden, etc.
For Samantha’s room. Any time we see it(not just in BO1). We usually see/hear someone to close and lock the window. For the trailer of chronicles Samantha quickly closes the door when she enters the room. In the origins cutscene maxis says make sure the windows are locked. In the 2 versions of the room in kino show the window closed(where the room’s all fine) and smashed open(where the room is all dead and horror like)
Honestly black ops 1 is such a good game and this is the game that got me hooked on zombies and has been for over a decade and treyarch does it right and almost always hits with a home run vanguard not so much but thanks for giving this game praise exceptional gamer and thanks for the happy birthday this year I appreciated it
I always found Ascension very scary. It felt intimidating to me on how big it was and how the zombies looked. Wish Tryarch did more like that becusse the zombies face desgin in that map looked so horrific and grotesque. With one being a very bloated and mutilated skull, and another being this twisted swarl to it... Also yeah the loading theme is very creepy to me
Not sure if this has been mentioned but the sickle is probably a reference to the USSR flag which features a hammer and sickle. Since ascension takes place at a Soviet space facility I think that's probably the inspiration. Great video
When I was a kid, my dad encouraged me to play this. He was a Marine who went to Iraq and Afganistan and really loved his experience in war so when these shooter games started to become mainstream especially Call of Duty it was one of his favorite games and he let me try and when we played zombies I would always ask him to hurry and press play so we can exit the lobby room because I was scared the zombie would come out and eat me 🤣🤣
Another thing to note about BO1’s menu is that in the normal mode, you can escape from the chair by hitting certain buttons. You can walk around a room and use a computer. When Zombies is active, you can’t break out anymore. While this is likely a technical limitation, it works perfectly to give the idea that now you’re in deep. No matter how hard you struggle, you’re trapped. Just you, in this cramped room, against the restless dead.
I gotta wonder about the main menu: does someone else know about Mason? He's stuck in that room. There was that original idea if Shangri-La was gonna have Woods and probably Mason. Also, thinking about Kino, the photo is interesting because there had to been some soldiers thinking they gotten lucky in capturing some enemy soldiers, only to get confused by the sight of glowing eyes. I also gotta wonder if the neighborhood even has someone unfortunately nearby.
well for the reels the real reason theyre there is because maxis and the group 935 wanted to weaponize zombies so hitler had an undead army at his disposal
I already saw someone mentioning this, sort of, but if you take a look at the clip in ascension where the zombies dodge your bullets, only the soldiers do that and to follow up and correct them, even without firing zombies in military uniforms dodge your line of site entirely shooting or not because those zombies still have memories when they were human of being soldiers and they notice the ultimis crew have military uniforms and obviously deep down they wouldn't want to harm their fellow soldiers, but obviously they can't control that. they're zombies.
My first map was kino and I’m glad someone mentioned the void barrier, I didn’t know they had glowing eyes when I first played and when I saw the lights I thought they were lanterns of someone coming to help me. Until they started tearing the barricades off and I could see the arms sticking through
With the Grim Reaper Blood stains. They’ve been around since WAW a Friend and I were playing Co-op Campaign back in 2012 and I saw the Blood stain all over the walls. They can mostly be seen on the Russian Missions but they are there! Look for em and you’ll find them. They must be there for when you’re suppose to die maybe? Bit the. There’s the whole cheating death Theme which fights against the death signs all around!
The scariest thing about BO1’s zombies menu was the feeling that the footage was what was going on in the facility you’re in and you’re strapped to that chair, and just waiting for zombies to come through that red door
Thanks! I feel like past BO1, zombies strayed away from horror, so for other videos like this, I will probably do all the scary maps in BO2 (Mob of the Dead, Tranzit, Buried.) And as for BO3, I feel like Zetsubou is the only scary map in BO3, so I would probably make a standalone video about that one
Origins has a different kind of horror to it. But it's more about how insignificant you feel and how oppressive everything around you is due to everything being big or zombies coming from literally all sides with a big bulky metal boy chasing you and can easily take you on. But now that i think of it I think it's not a style of horror, it's just anxiety incarnate.
Fun fact: As a kid zombies had created its own aura of fear for me just with that song that plays on the menu for zombies in black ops 1. It literally kept me from going downstairs, and my brother used it to keep me away from his Xbox when he didn’t want me to use it. To this day that song is still something I dread, but now I’m an absolute horror buff so I love cod zombies.
I was a night shift custodian at an old theater for a while. Amd the whole time I was always thinking of kino, used to scare the crap out of me, especially since I was the only o e there 😂
Hi Exceptional! The theory for why it is only the zombies at Ascension that can dodge bullets and not others has to do with the appearance of the zombies that dodge your bullet. It is only the military dressed zombies and not the scientist researchers that can dodge bullets and it was used to show that Group 935 had some success with training these soldiers not to be just mindless corpses. It was a hint that they were getting close, before things went wrong.
What scares me it is the astronaut in moon ,he just stalks you and walk toward -s you,no noises or anything just slowly chases you around the map,and it is more creppy when there isn't that many zombies or when you are distracting the crawlers for your team to do something
I remember as a kid in Kino, I thought once you go outside there would be a way out and beat the game and just leave. Then you get outside and see cars and streets and was like "Oh. They're coming from the streets welp." I like that hopelessness. Any and all sense of security is blown away
What I think is interesting about the spawn room in Five is how it looks all clean and empty, until these walking corpses covered in blood show up and ruin the flooring and windows.
Man Kino was so scary for me as a kid, I used to play BOZ all the time with my mates, we where all super scared of it but none wanted to admit it, so we just played it with the heart rate of a Chihuahua. If we hadn't unlock Five we would had gotten a heart attack. We never got the DLC or WiFi so pretending to not be scared in a room together is a true memory xD Not to mention the first time we got to round 5.... It took us embarrassingly long..... I never could play alone for long tho, maybe this is the origin of my insaciable paranoia. I've always lived in fear of something grabbing me from the back... Those two hits :V
I always liked to imagine the zombies dodging your bullets on Ascension as the zombies still retaining there human muscle memory. You'll notice that the only zombies who actually dodge are soldiers, not scientist. This theory still hold up for other maps as well, you'll see on Kino that the nazis do a march sort of walk, and on Shi No you see the zombies do this weird type of walk. I think this makes it scarier to make the zombies still retain there human likeness, imagining that they once were truly human.
As someone who played call of duty zombies on the Nintendo Wii I never got to see or hear some of these details and there were no pods on my stage while I played. The mystery box in the lobby was by the upstairs barrier & not in the center of the balcony. Crazy differences.
That knocking in dressing room always made me think someone had possibly accidentally locked themselves in one of those big wardrobe chests on to the left while trying to hide from the zombies…or worse…the relatively small chest makes me think of a child. Obviously a lot of full grown folks could probably fit uncomfortably but then I how’d they lock it from inside? (Barring the latch falling by accident…but you could likely open it from the inside w something thin enough to slip through the gap). In a roundabout way this is why I wonder if it’s a kid who someone locked inside to prevent the zombies etc from easily opening it while assuming they’d be able to come back and unlock it, but they died instead.
Loved the video. BO1 was my first game as a nine year old squeaker. The zombies absolutely terrified me but intrigued me so much. This video was awesome and it brought back a ton of memories. Thanks man. 👍🏻
“i know this seems weird but i wanted to start off with the main menu” nah man i remember being a kid and being terrified of the zombie behind the glass just constantly banging along with that piano. truly shivered me timbers
Imagine a crazy jumpscare if you left the device in idle for too long with the zombified investigator. Maybe breaks the glass and jumps on you, refreshes back to the first screen. Would have been lit.
I'll never forget the first time I played WaW Zombies. I didn't know anything about how it worked, and I was scared, it was Nacht, and the intro terrified me. I recall the first dozen or so attempts I just ran up the stairs in the start area and waited for the zombies, wondering why my colt wasn't killing them, and nearly shitting myself when they got to me. Good times.
Bo1 is one of my favorite call of duty’s but zombies has a special place in my heart, and the detail and how you described was really one of the best ways someone could describe a game.
Main character: *cant survive falling off staircase* Also the Main character when fighting zombies: *can take multiple lethal scratches without being infected*
These videos are incredible! So thoroughly detailed and both well written & edited. Keeps that love of zombies thriving even 14 years later. Your channel will keep growing TEG
What also makes zombies good is the ingenuity of bo1's campaign story in general. The realistic history/fantasy thing they did is so brilliant to me till this day.
Tbh I feel like the Zombies chronicals maps kind of missed the points the the og maps had and didn’t feel creepy any more. I know they may look better (to some extant) but I feel like the og maps look way better then the chronicals remakes. Especially the redesign of the 115 rocks from origins and onward, it’s too bright and not subtle like comparing them on shino numa the og looks subtle and eerie but the remake looks like it’s screaming at you going “HEY LOOK OVER HERE! YES ITS ME IM THE 115! I DID THE ZOMBIE STUFF!”
The thing that makes Five so much more eerie to me is the fact that it takes place in the Pentagon, which is, in the public's mind, one of the most impenetrable buildings on Earth. So to see it ransacked and taken over by the zombies makes it feel like nowhere is safe, that there's nowhere you can run to. Also, it reminds me of the part in a Resident Evil game where your saferoom gets broken into.
Happy (late) Halloween! Thanks so much for all the support. What scared you the most about Black Ops 1 Zombies?
The eerie silence when you get out of the indoor areas in Moon. Just staring at an empty void in complete silence gives me chills. Not only that, it legit feels like you could just start drifting away into nothingness at every wrong move.

Black ops 3 with no sound is pretty similar in creepiness, but ya, I have to agree with you

Best. First Impression. Ever.

I feel so bad for Brock and Gary, never being able to be free and having to repeat that every day. its like big depression.
BO1 Zombies really struck a perfect balance between the sheer horror and feeling of dread that WaW had and the off-the-walls mysticism and depth that would follow in BO2 and 3.

one of the things i wish you mentioned with “five” is some of the easter eggs in the laboratory area. for example, you showed part of where they did testing for the winters howl, but you can actually find prototypes of the weapon on the tables around that area, and you can also see plans for how the americans reverse engineered the ray gun from the nazis at der riese. there are ray guns on shelves that are subtly there. also, if you look through one of the barriers in the labs you can see a teleporter from der riese. it also explains why the teleporters are random on five, it’s because the americans couldnt figure out exactly how to precisely teleport you to a specific location, like the nazis at der riese or kino! it just adds to the overall zombies lore about how after ww2 americans took plans and things from group 935 and tried to reverse engineer teleporters, ray guns etc to help in the cold war. it just adds an extra layer of creepy because you know so many people were here trying to re do what the nazis did but to no avail. all went wrong in the end and that’s why it’s so desolate.
Well, to add on the horror of Kino… the map is set in Berlin, and yes, the wall you see at the end before the next map comes for its review, is the Berlin Wall…
I’ve always found that particularly terrifying, that a place like Berlin, which has buildings that still seem to stand (despite being only 15 to 20 years after WW2), is totally empty and all you have is the remnants of Nazis in the form of zombies…

Describing Five as a haunted house is so perfect, it feels like a high end Disney or Universal Studios haunted house, where the first floor is like the queue area where you wait in line and just take in the environment, then the next floor down is like the room where you would board the actual ride or something, and from there you descend into the absolute horror of the Five labs, brimming with human experimentation victims and horrific sights, only to turn on power and escape through the portals.

@@robertcortez4956 yes and I believe return of the living dead also might have taken inspiration from that but don't quote me on it.

I honestly think this is one of those theories that is most likely true
What scares me it is the astronaut in moon ,he just stalks you and walk toward -s you,no noises or anything just slowly chases you around the map,and it is more creppy when there isn't that many zombies or when you are distracting the crawlers for your team to do something
this was such an amazing breakdown bro, i don’t remember the maps being this creepy 😭
Thanks man! Yeah they have some spooky things in them. So many layers.
when you're focused on the fun gameplay it's kinda hard to notice, but when you know it's there it just sticks in your mind lmao
I used to toggle between Zombies and campaign Mode just to see the Interrogator turn to a zombie and back to normal in like 2 seconds
LES GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Also, the horror aspect needs to come back to zombies, they really peaked in that genre when making verruckt
For sure! Also Verruckt was absolute peak zombies horror
The Friday nights with the boys playing 5 or 6 hours man. What wonderful memories
You said it and you delivired. Can't wait to watch it tonight. :)
And you remembered! Hope you enjoy, put a lot of effort into it! :)
Really good observation! It's like the corruptness of the zombies is spreading slowly around the place i.e, the blood tainting the place
Damn those bastards! That'll never come out of the carpet!
OG zombies had an ambient creepy background noise, especially the WAW game when you turn off the music. Is like a downright creepy vibe.
Man Kino was so scary for me as a kid, I used to play BOZ all the time with my mates, we where all super scared of it but none wanted to admit it, so we just played it with the heart rate of a Chihuahua. If we hadn't unlock Five we would had gotten a heart attack. We never got the DLC or WiFi so pretending to not be scared in a room together is a true memory xD
Not to mention the first time we got to round 5.... It took us embarrassingly long.....
I never could play alone for long tho, maybe this is the origin of my insaciable paranoia. I've always lived in fear of something grabbing me from the back... Those two hits :V
@@A1Authority this is definitely a comment of all time xD
@@mauseratti226 See for yourself!
Zombies was absolutely terrifying. I hated how Hudson would leave and a zombie would comeback banging on the window..
I think this makes it scarier to make the zombies still retain there human likeness, imagining that they once were truly human.
on shi no the "weird walk" is actually a martial arts fighting stance
As someone who played call of duty zombies on the Nintendo Wii I never got to see or hear some of these details and there were no pods on my stage while I played. The mystery box in the lobby was by the upstairs barrier & not in the center of the balcony. Crazy differences.
The scariest part of all these maps is that they will never stop, you can find the best way to kill them but they won’t stop
(Almost all)
That knocking in dressing room always made me think someone had possibly accidentally locked themselves in one of those big wardrobe chests on to the left while trying to hide from the zombies…or worse…the relatively small chest makes me think of a child.
Thanks man. 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words, ohhh the memories 💭
“i know this seems weird but i wanted to start off with the main menu” nah man i remember being a kid and being terrified of the zombie behind the glass just constantly banging along with that piano. truly shivered me timbers
Imagine a crazy jumpscare if you left the device in idle for too long with the zombified investigator. Maybe breaks the glass and jumps on you, refreshes back to the first screen. Would have been lit.
Holy shit that would be sick!
Good times.
I'm not big on Call of Duty, but I love Zombies. I'm a huge horror nut, and classic Zombies has the perfect vibe.
Yesss haha it really does!
Bo1 is one of my favorite call of duty’s but zombies has a special place in my heart, and the detail and how you described was really one of the best ways someone could describe a game.
Main character: *cant survive falling off staircase*
Also the Main character when fighting zombies: *can take multiple lethal scratches without being infected*
These videos are incredible! So thoroughly detailed and both well written & edited. Keeps that love of zombies thriving even 14 years later. Your channel will keep growing TEG
Can’t thank you enough, gotta give the older games some love too
What also makes zombies good is the ingenuity of bo1's campaign story in general. The realistic history/fantasy thing they did is so brilliant to me till this day.
Currently my favourite Cod Zombies series. Feels cozy in its spookyness
At about 17:35 when I was listening to the anxiety frequencies, an ad played in the middle of it and that made me jump a bit lol
I DID THE ZOMBIE STUFF!”
i do not like chronicales
The thing that makes Five so much more eerie to me is the fact that it takes place in the Pentagon, which is, in the public's mind, one of the most impenetrable buildings on Earth. So to see it ransacked and taken over by the zombies makes it feel like nowhere is safe, that there's nowhere you can run to. Also, it reminds me of the part in a Resident Evil game where your saferoom gets broken into.
