Make sure your your layer has attributes or column that has some label data.
Also make sure you’ve saved your file and that it’s not a temporary layer

The names are usually part of the attribute table.
So if your dataset has some column that contains names, then you can label your polygons by the names in that column. But if your data doesn’t have any descriptive columns that can act as names, then you will have to manually create a name column on your attribute table
