    I would prefer not to have background music because of my hearing impairment. It is slightly distracting for us old folks (85!)

    Jaysus that is just silliness. 5 minutes to get the train ready and everything is just overly stringent.

    My dad was a duty schedule compiler for the Underground, in pre-computer days .A 'dark art' indeed...

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  6 років тому +3

      thing is the schedules were better when produced by a human. The computer maybe efficient but as soon as things start to run late and there are delays, that efficiency means that there inst enough "wasted" time to get things back.

    As a bus driver we have the same thing with regards to start times etc, the start times are very precise

    video suggestion: do the shifts work around the drivers needs maybe they have kids to look after etc , or are you forced to do certain shifts that no one else can cover, has any shifts effected your sleep patterns perhaps

  • @Briancollison

    it is similar on the buses about times being down to the minute, I am a retired bus driver, only difference was I had to pay cash in at the depot at end of shift.

    Once on the way back from Battle to Hastings during the hot summer of 2015 I must of dozed off I just remembered the train been announced it’s going back to Charing Cross I shot out of my seat and off the train I don’t nap in the afternoon as a rule.

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  2 роки тому +1

      It’s happened to many people! We use to have to wake people up on the last train of the night that had overslept and missed there stop. We once had a man we woke up, when we asked him where he wanted to go he said Charing Cross. We asked him where he got on and he said Hastings then asked what the time was. Turned out he got on at Hastings and slept all the way to London and back again!

    Do you think it would be difficult to become a train driver, without the pre-experience in the industry?
    Your VLOGs have been fantastic and I'm keeping an eye open for roles with operators... but I'm trying to figure out how to get ahead and get a chance to become a trainee driver. Cheers

    We are generally given 20 mins from book on to departure as guards at my company (although this can vary depending on circumstances).
    0453 book on today for an 0513 departure. And yes I'm still awake (not working tomorrow).

    It has always amazed me that the railway industry (notorious for delays, late running and cancellations because of the VAST number of things that can, and do, go wrong) insists on sticking to such a strict and tight schedule.

    I said to my self i m impressed about the vlog, i just found it and i have already watched 3 episodes, i do have a lot of replays but since it is a half a year old video i'l try to be short.
    In last blog where it was about the horn...I think you should visit Slovenia...here we do have some gudience when using a horn, but we basically can use it whenever we want...the friend that is driver in Germany (they can't use horn except emergency or if there is a sign requesting it) said that Slovenia is heaven for train lovers, the only problem is that we are a step behind with other parts of Europe like with our speeds, organization...witch brings me to another thing...our shifts...they all start in a 00/15/30/45 and last up to 12h, in some circumstances longer. And we basically do it old fashioned way, no higher math... like sometimes you have 15 min to prepare a train for service and you re ruining as crazy another time there can be up to 2 h of time, for compleatly prepared train witch is already on the platform.

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  6 років тому +1

      Hi, Thank you for your comments. Thats interesting to here how the railway works in other parts of the world. I didn't know that about the horn in Germany. We are not allowed by Law to work longer than 12 hour shifts, although individual companies normally set lower maximum working times as a work and union agreement. My maximum day for example is 9 Hrs 15 Mins We also have to allow 12 hours between shifts rest time.

    • @sz541
      @sz541 6 років тому +1

      Dad Rail
      Oh here is simmilar 12 h is max effective work time, and bettween the sifts we have to have free time in at least 2x time of previous sift...basicly we work in system day sift, night sift, the day we finish night sift, free day...

    As a truck driver, the hours we can drive/work etc, are strictly regulated. Do you have similar rules and regulations as a train driver? If so, what are the maximum hours you are allowed to work/drive in a day or week etc? Excellent vlogs btw. There are loads of truck vlogs on UA-cam but not so many train driver ones so it makes for really interesting viewing. Good job. :)

    You said you wouldn't need the 5 minutes to get the cab ready if you were relieving another driver. Would this apply only when taking over the cab that is in use? Or would it also apply when relieving at a change of ends? Or when opening up the cab of the second unit when a train is being split? (Some railways achieve very short dwell times these circumstances.)
    Interesting videos. Thank you.

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  6 років тому +1

      Hi Paul, Thanks for your comment. the 5 mins to get the cab ready is only required when you need to do a full cab setup. When releving another driver then then time required and allowed is minimal as the cab is all ready set (radio, brake test, headlights, destination displays ect) so you only need the time it takes to change drivers. Changing ends is slightly different and the times are worked out depending on the train length.

    • @paulkennedy8701
      @paulkennedy8701 6 років тому +1

      Thanks, but my question is whether the 5 minutes applies when there's a driver changover but the relieving driver ISN'T taking over the same cab. For instance, when stepping back. And also when the new driver is taking the cab of a (portion) train being detached at a station on route.
      In other words, I think, is there a component of the setting up time which is not necessary in (either of) those circumstances? Some railways manage to reverse a train in less time than that. And, obviously, reversing a train in revenue service should be done quickly for the sake of passengers. (Even on the country service from Middlesbrough to Whitby, the time to reverse the train at Bathersby is given in the WT as 3½ or 4 min (including time to walk the length of the train, given it isn't a relief point).

    Do trains have an odometer on the speedo to record the mileage the train covers?

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  6 років тому +1

      Good Question, I believe some of the older trains did, but on the more modern stock it is recorded by the on-board computer. The millage has to be known as trains are booked maintenance exams based on there millage.

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  Рік тому +1

      Some depots and companies have a "cover drive" for this situation.
      A: The train will run late
      B: The train will be cancelled
      C: The cover driver will take the train
