Hey Bo! Thanks for linking to our second opinion video! It was a big suspense for us until the last minute, to see what you would come up with! At the end, it seems like we all had a lot of fun with MODOR! 👍🍀
I mean this as nothing but a compliment: sonically this is like a great big, chunky, generously proportioned Volca Drum. Like I say - this is not a slight on it, I love the Volca Drum. Very hard, shamelessly digital, really cool. I looked at one a while back and was disappointed that there was no parameter locking which, like you said, seemed an obvious enhancement. I guess I have to take a closer look again now...
actually I think that the inventor of the Modor DR2 mentioned today on Modwiggler that p-locks are in the works for the next firmware update! Exciting but Rytm still my favorite drum synth currently.
Thank you Bo! Thank you for nagging at Modor into updating with parameter locking! As soon as I was done watching this video, I ordered one from Perfect Circuit!
Was attracted to their synth but dismissed it as to expensive & not analogue. But i understand their a small company. But this drum units got me & in all honesty if youd told me it was analogue id believe you. Although it can certainly do some unique things that would be complicated to achieve without some kinda digital trickery in there. Damn my taste lives on a different planet to my budget 🤦🏻 going to have t wait for an ebay bargain!
I want a drum machine that focuses on percussion, like rims, congas, cajon, tabla, xylophone, type sounds. Something hybrid that had sounds like the old Roland Rhythm machines as well as the 808 and 909 kicks, bass, congas, and rims, even some of the cowbells are cool. I also like the Elektron percussion sounds. I've been thinking of getting a few of the Elektron machines, but I don't really like all of the space that they would take up. I don't like super harsh snares, and I pretty much hate claps and crashes/O-Hats. I like using things like woodblocks or ambient recordings to replace snares and hats. High frequencies that have super harsh noises bother me. I'm basically looking for a drum machine that I can make ambient style rhythms on, that doesn't focus on harsh sounds, like a lot of machines. I get that EDM uses a lot of harsh noise in producing music, and that's what companies cater to, but I don't make or listen to EDM. I like chill ambient music, with mostly low BPM percussion that lays in the middle/background. I know my wants are niche, but it would be cool if a company made a hybrid/sampling capable ambient focused machine with kick/bass/percs, without all of the focus on hats, crashes, snares, and claps.
Just get a sampler like the digitakt and load up all the samples you want to use. Then use the filter, delay, and reverb to mellow them out as far as you want. Or run it through some effects to shape your sounds however you want. You could go with the Analog Rytm and use the built in machines and samples. Just because the examples you have heard sound harsh, that doesn't mean that is all the machines are capable of doing. Especially with the sampling added in.
For the price, I think something like the Elektron syntakt would be a better value for those in the market. $700 cheaper, 12 tracks, digital and analog synth sounds, etc. This unit seems way overpriced
I've been intrigued by Modor since having a play on the NF-1 at Synthfest UK in 2016 - the best sounds in that were also the most unashamedly digital, the tuned noise etc. I get the same vibe from this. Really enjoyed the parameter lock stuff you were doing after the 20m mark or so. It reminds me, in a good way, of a kind of clangy, ratchetty electronica from the early 2000s, Spooky and such. Price is sadly out of my range though. I know Modor made a compact version of the NF-1 but not sure that would work here..?
What id really like to know is are the pots any good? The knobs can easily be changed out. Your the 3rd person ive heard dubious about them so its getting harder to dismiss. Hopefully modor listen & release an upgrade set.
Wonder if the knob scraping can be fixed by just pulling a bit on the plastic knobs. Fixed some eurorack modules with knob scraping the panel just by pulling back clowl on the knobs. Looks like the switches are made by Marquardt, these are quality and feel great. Very interesting drum machine. Thanks for the video!
The Machine Drum is digital and it's probably the best sounding Ekektron gear.IMO what maters is the final result not if it's digital or analog. The Modor sounds amazing and I have several analog machines ( Tempest, Alphabase , Pulsar 23 and Rytm).
@@JS-wd2bk And part of the Pulsar is digital, the bass voice. It says so in the manual. It's high res, and nobody really cares. Good is good, and the Machine Drum is awesome!!!
I hated on this when I first heard it, but now it's growing on me. It's one of the machines that I'm considering. I'm looking at the Pulsar 23, DR-2, Perkons, and Analog Rhtm.
IMHO nothing still beats the Tempest. The Vermona DRM1 MKIV also very good, and the price is not too high.If I would have to buy a new drum machine probably I would buy the DR-2, Perkons or the Jomox. ( I own the tempest, Analog Rytm and DRM1) but a the end of the day is what best fits the music you like doing.
The more videos I watch about different drum machines (including pulsar 23 and Erica synths percons).. The more I find I don't need them 😊 The Roland tr 8s is simply the best drum machine for me. I'm glad to know that 😊
Very dissapointing considering its digital and the price that it only has 6 voices and the build quality isn't immaculate. For the price this should be a truly innovative flagship product.
@@HOLLASOUNDS Sorry, thats not good enough. A small company like Synthstrom released the Deluge at a reasonable price which was actually innovative with good build quality. Excusing these issues becuase its a 'small company' is just enabling consumer behaviour. Its a shame because the front panel has a nice UI but this is so feature starved for the price its impossible to justify it.
I gotta say, that thing looks very old school… no rgb buttons and old-school 2 line yellow lcd, tb-303 red leds, but hey it DOES sound pretty nice! They should buy you lunch for a couple if months to convince them to add param locking… really, really important for an (overpriced) drum machine.
I mean no hate by this comment, but I struggle to hear anything here that Modor is doing better than Erika Synths LXR-02. Not enough to justify the price difference. Especially with no support for polyrhythms.
Pulsar 23 gets alot of love when I work in a DAW Polyend Play is my go to for just doing quick drum stuff when I do dawless Syntakt for drum sound sesign
@@BoBeats interesting. I do not know much about Polyend Play. I lust Abit on the Pulsar. The Perkins looks very interesting too. My drums are mostly TR-8, and DFAM.
For hypnotic and deep techno not trance edm shit. This one is proper. I feel amazing fm like percs out of this. But price.. think i am good with my tr8s and machinedrum..ill take a used tempest or a new mpc x over it. But i find it beautiful and unique and very appealing
It’s amazing you felt the same exact way I felt about it when I decided to find the Ultimate drum synth ( that turned out to be perkons that I’m still waiting for two years later.👽😏
Is it just me or does it sound really muddy, like the output stage is doing something weird? I know YT compresses everything in a horrible way but even compared with other drum machines (Syntakt!) reviewed on this channel.
Yep this is how Drum Machines should be conceptualized , expecially regarding mostly rythm and sound, the most important. Yep but, IF ONLY would have been half the size and half the price there would have been much more rumor about it. Also , knobs could have been encoders (a la Elektron), given some better position to them and at least a pair of encoders more per track set somewhere in this giant layout. To be so big everything could have been better managed. E.G. : LXR-02 (in comparison) results a better purchase. What a potential, Modor: waste !

Noice choice! Overlooked instrument by many 😮

This is like the ultimate Oscillator Sink drum machine!
@@BoBeats please don't say that, we're in the middle of a huge economic crash over here - I can't afford another drum machine!

That can’t be true. It seems like you can actually get a decent snare drum tone out of this thing
The one with the bad snare sound was the Volca Beats, not the Volca Drum.
Thank you Bo! Thank you for nagging at Modor into updating with parameter locking! As soon as I was done watching this video, I ordered one from Perfect Circuit!
one of the best drum machines on the market. love it.
Modor DR-2 is unique and has special character, I enjoy the sliders for raising volume levels and adjusting compression

thanks for pushing hard for parameter locks! DR2 is at another level now
So it's Erika vs. Mo(r)dor in the battle of $2K DMs. Whenever Bo showcases, he saves me a trip to Burbank. Tusen Tack, Bo! 😀
Pair this with a Perkons and Digitone for some mad fun!
Thanks Bo. Been waiting for this.

A bit if felt under the knobs will totally fix the knob scraping, but yeah, that should be done by the manufacturer.
Sickest Drum machine out there… 2 is Jomox Alpha base, and 3rd is Roland Tr8S
I read an interview with Stephan Bodzin, he used one of these on his most recent album. 👍
Nice one, I def like the design, and the overall vibe
Please review the Twisted Electrons Blast Beats!!
I’ve been looking at one of these for awhile. I decided on the jomox alpha base. Also have an lxr-02 which I would happily sell for this!
Looks cool but I still prefer the Elektron Rytm MK2. Erica Synths Perkons is the most exciting new drum synth right now to me.

Pretty cool. Digital is underestimated for its flexibility. She's a beauty, but I can only afford one in this category. Hope they've sold well.

How a digital drum machine ships without being able to program probability per step is beyond me. This is a big miss for a modern sequencer.
Very nice. Quite pricey though.
The thumbnail makes it look like it's NOT expensive
Why is it so big?
Fit more sounds in.
I can only afford to watch this video, Bo. way out of the ballpark...
Its like a DSI tempest if it wasn't as playable, or as fun and didn't sound as good 🤣
In the words of Jordan Peele, NOPE
Lol
Yeah, 1750€ is a bit much for a Volca Drum in a bigger box.
Not really seeing any value here. But sure it inspires someone. But feel the same about the op-1.
With knackered 909s goin for $4000 this machine is a pharkin bargain
I wonder at what point will we have enough drum machines....you can't reinvent the wheel that many time. Get a Digitakt and you'll be happy.
nice machine but nearly 2000 Euro naah
Compared to the Elektron Machinedrum MKII UW, it looks and sounds like e toy...
This sound, I not like.
looks cute yet i think I would go for the Soma if i am spending that much money..
