  • Hello friends, today I’m Harvesting Staghorn Sumac and making Cherokee lemonade, ( also known as Sumac- ade) and I’m making Sumac jelly. It’s easier than you think, and has tons of medicinal benefits. It’s super high in vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and potent antioxidants. It’s also great for an anti-inflammatory. It taste like strawberry lemonade, and can be used as such ( that’s how the Cherokee used it), but you can add it to iced tea, Or mixed with apple juice, and seltzer water. That same strawberry lemonade flavor comes across in a Summertime jelly. This is great on biscuits, or pancakes.
    Sumac Lemonade~
    Juice extracted from sumac bobs
    Sugar or honey to taste
    Strain through cheese cloth and ice
    Sumac Jelly ~
    5 cups sumac juice
    1/4 cup lemon juice
    6 tbs pectin
    5 cups sugar

    My wife's Navajo mother uses this to make a pudding and uses the branches to make baskets. The bush is slightly different, Rhus trilobata, or three-leaf sumac. Thank you for other cooking options.

    Awesome! I love sumac. I used to have a tree when I lived farther south. My kids used to call it a monkey tree because it was so fuzzy. Thanks for sharing. ☮️❤️☕️

    Yesterday, at around 10-30 in the morning, me and my family drove to Owasco Lake and visited my actual grandfather. When I say actual, I mean it's my dad's actual dad. I saw a lot of Staghorn Sumac trees and berries. My aunt julia told me that you could make lemonade out of the berries. It's a very interesting plant.

      Sounds like you had a great day! I don't know what lake you are talking about because I don't know which state your in. I live in Washington State. Let me know if you try making the lemonade, or jelly. You will love it!

    I had no idea Sumac is consumable. We have it all over our land. It can be quite invasive.

    • @ChristopherJones16
      @ChristopherJones16 3 роки тому

      Just be careful its not poison sumac.. which is like the most poisonous plant/tree in the united states.. its more poisonous than poison oak and poison ivy. Also the Staghorn Sumac isnt as invasive as you think.. its the Tree of Heaven thats very invasive and quite often confused for Sumac. I have all three growing in my neighborhood.. Everyone hates the trees because they think all three trees are just one tree.. and they think that invasive tree is the one with the fruit and also think its poisonous.. they dont realize theres three different trees that can be found growing next to each other and are almost identical at first sight till one gets closer and examines the leaves and bark.

    So, do you not need to strain the 5 cups of juice through a cheesecloth before adding it to your pot before you start making the jelly? Thanks! This was very interesting, and I'm looking forward to trying it!

    • @TinaGolik
      @TinaGolik  3 роки тому

      Yes Train the Juice like I show in the video. It will have fuzzy bits in it that you don't want in your drink, or jelly. Let me know how it turns out!

    I made the jelly and tasted it after adding 1 cup of sugar & so glad I did cause it was already sweet enough for me! I can’t imagine adding 5 cups!! 😳 Just making sure recipe isn’t a misprint?

      In the washing process more of the lemony hairs on yours may have rinsed away so it's less tart.

    • @TinaGolik
      @TinaGolik  2 роки тому +1

      Did the jelly set up? The amount of sugar is not only for taste, but it helps the jelly set up, and become thick. Id say if 1 cup worked for you, then stick with it. The best part of sharing recipes, is trying them, and making them our own by changing things how we like them. :)

      @@TinaGolik I'm doing this for the first time today. Yours is the second video I watched. The first video mentioned that the sumac berries are sticky when they are ready. Mine are definitely sticky! I don't know if this is true of all sumacs or just whatever kind I have, but that might be a good way also.

      @@TinaGolik Thats awesome. I know the heat would speed the process up I have just always heard not to use heat with sumac. I am hoping to make some sumac spice this year instead of buying it on amazon. I love cooking trout with it and garnishing with wood sorrel which I believe is a Cherokee recipe, but I am not Cherokee so I can't confirm that for sure. I am also hoping the recent rain hasn't washed away all the flavor from our sumac.
      Great video!

    How invasive is Smooth or Staghorn Sumac? I was thinking of growing it along my chain link fence line for privacy, but I have no idea regarding whether it will become a problem plant due to invasiveness. How tall does it get? Could it be a good plant to grow? I wonder if I could utilize it for profit.

    • @TinaGolik
      @TinaGolik  3 роки тому +2

      It can be invasive because it spreads very quickly. (similar to how a vinning maple spreads) I would say if you want to contain it, and grow it in a big pot you could still use the berries, but prevent the plant from spreading. It does get very tall, and a pot would be a good way to control that as well. I have a vinning maple in a whiskey barrel pot for the same reason, and it does great, and has grown well in it for many years.

    • @TinaGolik

      If washed to long, yes they can. You want to just run water over them long enough to knock off dust or bugs. A fast rinse!
