That's fair! I saw they have alternate poses for their art, I still wish all their poses had clear contrast/silhouette design but I am SO glad they have the options!
I love rev1999 for the fact they dont follow the same design rules as other gacha games or even anime-adjecent media as a whole. The clothes are easier to figure out since a lot of it is based on practical and even historical clothing so you have less of a headache drawing and cosplaying them with secondhand clothes
medpoc fan here hiii medicine pocket is a cross between a researcher/mad scientist and doctor you got that part spot on! they’re actually based off some experiments done in the 1990s where the university of utah would take beagles from shelters to use to for animal extermination they usually only experiment on themselves and their hair is is beagle colored which is because they’re represent the dogs/beagles themselves (seeing how they bite things and other dog stuff) their leveled up outfit has the brown/yellow underside of the coat turns purple which makes their color palette that of the intersex flag which could just be a coincidence but kinda cool (i actually used to think medicine pocket looked really ugly before the emotional attachment kicked in so your insight definitely helped on why they looked so off😭😭)
I REALLY wanna like their design so I think I'm in the same boat as you 😭 That's definitely the kind of concept and backstory to get attached to I don't blame ya

the comment on the skins upset me. :( ur paying for the work of the people who made the new art, the animations, voice lines, live 2d and battle sprite of the new skin. its like saying digital art commissions arent worth it yk? bluepoch isnt like hoyoverse or whoever made league. its a small company and reverse is their first game
And those skins are decently priced. 10-15bucks. Some gacha games like Nikke are selling skins for 60bucks... That s also the way the company earns a living. That s one of the main sale they have on an otherwise free games. (And pulls of course, but you can manage pulls entirely f2p)

For Balloon Party, I quite like the indistinction for her face! Especially with her voice which is quite flat in tone, I feel like there's supposed to be less focus on the personhood and more on the party aspect. It's what she brings with her, if that makes sense. It kind of ties in with her second story where the opening line is: A strange woman had come to the town. She was wearing a strange costume and talking about strange things, but all the children had gathered by her side. As for her profession, she is asked if she is a doctor and claims "Yes, and no. Oh... Madam... Ms. ... Um, my "mouth friend"! In terms of title, I prefer "Party Animal" or "Party Maniac"! I'm happy when everyone's happy. That's right!" All in all, I highly doubt she has any medical training. In her second story, she cured a boy's broken leg overnight ("From the nurses' chitchat, I learned that Tommy's broken leg was cured overnight; the plaster on his leg appeared in the garbage station outside the town, mixed with balloon pieces"). There is another "doctor" called Kakania and she claims to be a psychiatrist, but that is only because of her arcane skills & knowledge of psychoanalysis and it was confirmed that she does not have a medical license
I agree. Balloon party is less of a 'doctor' and more a 'local healer'. She's basically a nehlected child going around punishing other adults who abuse/neglect their children
AHH Reverse 1999 content! Reverse 1999's art style, story, and overall the general vibe really attracted me towards the game and I'm glad to see other artists standpoints on their character designs! You're critiques and rubric really gave me great insight on what I'm slacking on my own characters, and honestly will probably be using it to gauge my own art :D. As for the possibility of AI, tbh I'm not too sure. So much of the art and design work seems to be carefully crafted, so I'm leaning on the side of disagreeing there's AI involvement (though there may be my personal enjoyment of the story and game giving me bias). Not too familiar on how professionally creating artwork for games like these work, but for some parts I've always just considered they may have digitally just painted over some of the things and due to not being a considered focal point of the design, maybe just never bother to fix it? Personal touch? Though that may be too generous of an assumption? Although, I think that kind of falls flat seeing how Balloon Party's design's vagueness alongside the random tidbits really just make the design a bit flawed. Miss the days when AI art wasn't something we'd regularly have to look out for

Lil funfact, the star thingy on Regulus' design is supposed to represent the star Regulus, which is where her name comes from since it's part of the Leo constellation and she was born in August (August 15th actually, her birthday's soon!)
So about Fragrances - all character profiles in game presented as in-universe magazine articles and some of their pages are scented, like some perfume ads. And a thing about contrast - game itself is mostly dark, more often than not you will see M.Pocket and other white-on-white characters on black/brown/bordo screen and it reads completely different, then on white page.
So balloon party is basically someone who go to children's parties, heal the sick ones, and kill the abusive parents. I'm thinking about instead of gothic outfit, she could've wear something that is a mix between sweet and scary. Black and pink dress. The silhouette of the dress could be exactly like the original but instead of black and white, it's black and dark pink like her balloon color. Her dress would have random candies in random places just like her hair to show her party side. Maybe add some blood-like designs. Her hat should be a birthday party hat but make it stylish and again, both sweet and scary.
During Regulus’s crit someone asked about character design books. The Silver Way by Stephen Silver was actually one of my textbooks for a class! It focuses a lot on character design for cartooning/Western Animation but everything he says can be adapted to other styles & mediums. Stephen Silver was the lead character designer on a lot of American shows like Kim Possible and Danny Phantom.
Ooo that's a good one! I've read it too, most of my book recommendations on the subject are too graphic novel focused to have felt useful here but I second this suggestion
Apple is also a reference to Isaac Newton. Regulus is a radio pirate. It was a thing back in the day where people broadcasts music without having the license to it. She also might have a connection to Nicholas flamel and the philosopher's stone.

I will definitely check up on the channel for more videos like this. Your design teaching talents, critiques and adjustments were showcased in a very easy-to-understand manner. Your review on Balloon Party I agreed completely on, since her first design was very much needing the changes from her upgraded design & splash art (e.g. Eye colour change and size increase/clarity of her bows and pins).
From what I saw in chat, Isolde and Kakania from the current update (1.7) and Vertin herself were definitely the most anticipated for next time. (doesn't have to be next week, hope you're able to stay sane in 2024 and don't feel any form of "schedule, deadline, rush" while producing content you're familiar with and enjoy) I was entertained and felt the knowledge flowing through my mind. Distinguishing pointers that we should always keep in mind when designing character portraits.
Sonetto's eyes are canonically green, surprised you could tell that they were green with just the art alone since many say they look gray. I also wish they made the green more obvious because not all of us, or at least non-artists could differentiate colors that well.
Wanted to say that in the game Sonetto's battle sprite is correct and the skirt doesn't overlap with the laces! Watching this VOD made me check since I thought I would have noticed something like that, and it looks like the chibi on the wiki (which matched the one you used so I assume you got it from there) has the entire torso rotated? Her neck was also affected in a really noticeable way and the collar area also makes a lot more sense in the in-game sprite
I like the concept of what you are doing; I just wish it was a tad more condensed. Trying to sift through the conversations with Twitch chat on a 5hrs long video is a bit difficult.

I believe Reverse 1999 also has multiple artists (real ones). So I'm thinking that's why Arcane is a character, more like modern anime in design choice, where as Schneider looks anime-esque but definitely more similar to 2.0 pixel style like in Octopath Traveler. And I mean their full concept art in cutscenes, if anyone wondering. Not the gameplay artwork. Art can also be very different depending on one's mind. Not just limited to art either, for example H.P.Lovecraft. if he released the books today, people would (imo) say he used AI to create it, because, surely no one can be that strange and creative. That is very unfortunate. I am not saying you are wrong or not, not that you are accusing either, just trying to help with some context of why things could be abit off depending on someon's pov ❤
by the way, about the apple alt skin, i don't think it's a double bow tie + normal tie, but rather, the black one hanging is supposed to be his outer coat (notice how he also has a black collar under the white collar)... like how the default design has a white one hanging that's supposed to be his suit.
Also the insight 2 skins are sometimes the older version of themselves not for all characters but a lot of them the insight 2 skins are their old self and then the default skin is their current
If there ever is a second version of this, here are some designs I think would be very interesting to critique: Tennant, Shamane, Ezra (mushroom enthusiast), Diggers, TTT Those are some of the characters that would be interesting to critique as they are very much Reverse 1999. I would recommend Prydwen for the Reverse 1999 characters and skins.
APPLe is a Newton incarnation-like. So if we re adding accessories to him, i think it should be something in that way. Either a wig like the haircuts back then or a prism or prismaticlight patterns on his clothes. Or a small moon/planet gravitating around him. All his moves also involve either light prisms or gravitation during fights.
melania with red glasses wouldnt make sense lore wise. red glasses stand out. if she neds to be identified it’s easy to remember her red glasses but black glasses are easily forgettable. red tights work because they’re not unusual for the time period and nobodys looking at her legs. also her name is muh-lah-nee-uh not muh-lay-nee-uh

Well, if you'd be interested in doing this for another gacha game, I'd love to see one of these for Limbus Company. There'd be a lot of stuff to do there since they have like 100+ playable units + like 50 ultimate abilities with unique art for each one. Not to mention the many NPCs and monsters. Seeing how long these streams take, maybe focusing on the 12 main characters(Sinners) in their base forms would be wise. I'd personally love to see you talk about them, because unlike most gacha characters, they all mostly wear the same uniform. So, I'd love to see how much about their personalities you can gleam from the way they wear that same uniform.

The animal based characters are the most interesting ones of all.
Even in the 1.8 update, we will be getting Another animal based character.

thousands on genshin??? i dropped like 50 a couple times for birthdays but like ... wow
manzana i get the expensive dresses thing ... i have two angelic pretty dresses that don't fit me anymore and true, second-hand, only a couple hundred for the both, but having £300 dresses in my closet ... sits wrong.
