    Back in 85 we were given a dream sheet for Duty Station after graduation, we could only choose East Coast, West Coast or Over Seas.
    Everyone that picked East Coast went to Cherry Point, everyone that picked West Coast went to 29 Palms and if you picked overseas you went to Camp Pendleton. What a pisser, I wanted Pendleton but was stuck in the Stumps.
    It turned out to be a decent Duty Station though, lots of great memories.

    I would suggest you tell your recruiter you want a duty station option and be insistent. I was in Hawaii which has a large infantry,air wing and logistics command. I had a new Marine who insisted he had an East Coast option for a duty station. My Sergeant Major read his contract and the young grunt was correct. The Sergeant Major called the assignment Sergeant Major and told him to cut orders to the Second Marine Div at Lejeune for the Marine. Since he had only been in Hawaii a month the assignment guy pushed back. He picked the wrong Sergeant Major to lean on. Mine told him he had 24 hours to cut the orders or the issue went to his boss. The kid got orders to Lejeune like his contract promised.

    I Joined from 86 to 91 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton at Del-Mar, because of my MOS and my Unit, I had the chance to get deployed on a few good OPS, Turkey, Hawaii and few guys from my Unit got a chance to do a Op in Thailand, so the sky is limit, but you gotta do your reseach and do what's best for your family and yourself, and is the Marine Corps a career on a step to where you're going.

    In 1981, when I went through ITS (Infantry Training School), we were told, “If you graduate 1-3 in the class, we will let you pick your duty station.” Having been born in California and my wife being here, I busted my ass and graduated #1 out of my class. I asked for Camp Pendleton. I ended up in Camp Lejeune. When I went to the First Sergeant, he didn’t even listen to me. Told me to get the f*** out of his office. That was that.

    The best duty assignment during my time was at base special services motor transport, headquarters company, regimental headquarters, 1st Marine Division. It was at 13 area. Our barracks and motor transportation vehicles were next to the Base Special Services headquarters. We were not issued any weapons and there were no formations. There were 5 or 6 of us there. One sergeant was the dispatcher and another sergeant was one of the drivers. We transported military personnel to various destinations on base. We would also take Marines and Marine dependents to places like Disneyland and knotts berry farm and even to dodger stadium to watch baseball games. My tour was almost over and I was encouraged to reenlist but like a dummy I decided to get out.

    Twentynine Palms and Okinawa for the most part. I kinda limited my choices, I told my recruiter I don’t really care much for the ocean or snow. I also scored really high on my ASVAB and other test they gave me. They asked me at SOI about joining force recon and intel. I had been injured twice in MCRD SD for 5 months so I was sick of class work I just wanted to be settled down. If you like being in the woods but have access to the city Big Bear is close by or you can go rack climbing in Joshua Tree National Park and at night watch explosives for ground and during CAX and remember at least it ain’t you this month

He did many training sessions in Yuma. Would drive down on his weekends off. 29 is horrible. Lived on and off base. Seriously in the middle of no where and either hotter than hell or freezing cold. There is nothing much to do unless u are on base. 29 is where they train before war. Huge base but not a fun place to get stationed.

So I went to MEPs last week for the moment of truth bs and I told them that I don’t have any tickets courts etc but in reality I have 2 speeding tickets from 2019 that I paid off this week and also have a pending small claims case but my insurance is taking care of it and even have a letter from the lawyer to the USMC if anything. My recruiter been known this since the day I went to the office but he told me not to worry about it. Is it true?? These speeding tickets are gonna be on my record and I’m worried they’ll send me back home at boot camp for it.. I told him about my concern and he said he’ll probably put them on my contract but he has to talk to his boss first. Do you think that’ll be an issue since they are already paid for but I never mentioned them at MEPs? Going infantry so I’m worried they’ll dig deeper.

    • @pac16
      @pac16 2 роки тому

      So I get station regardless? Yup, you will recieve orders telling you where you are going and be staying there till ur contract ends.
      How does living in these places work? Depending if you are married or not. If you are single you will get put into barracks and have your own room (similar to dorms or motels) you will either have 1 or 2 roommates and from on there that's basically where you are staying and living at. If married you'll get a house with BHA (Basic House Allowance).
      Is there breaks or free time? Yes, it's literally like a 9-5 job. Liberty on weekends and etc etc. Granted you might work more hrs during week days depending on ur mos but overall you'll be working and getting weekends off.
      Am I stuck there the whole time? Yup unless you have a car and drive off base with it.

    If I wanted to go to Hawaii would I be allowed to choose to go there? Would it be completely up to me where I wanted to go for the next 4 years? How would that work?

    • @rcairflr
      @rcairflr Рік тому

      I spent 6.5 years at MCB Kaneohe Hi. Loved it there. Just because you want to go, does not mean you will. First there has to be an opening in your MOS and next others might have requested it as their duty station. So you might get it but you might not, there is no guarantee, Typically Hawaii is 3 year duty station, not 4.

    What's the downside as a grunt at camp Lejeune?

    • @semperfine4442
      @semperfine4442 3 роки тому +1

      Long Floats, good or bad; no really close good liberty, winters suck, ticks, copperheads, Bears [ no shit], never being able to shut the crotch out. I spent a year and a half at Geiger with the former 8th Marines.

    • @vicO1323
      @vicO1323 3 роки тому

      Is there an upside to being a grunt? I was with 10th Marines in '70. Not much off base, took a float to Puerto Rico but I think that's been eliminated. I'm sure there must be float exercises somewhere. The base had bad water back then, there's a class action lawsuit ongoing at Lejeune. I put in for southeast asia because I hated Lejeune.

    I was talking to my friend that is an MP stationed in Camp Pendleton. The recruiter I was speaking to told me about the sheet that you put your preferences on like West Coast East Coast and overseas. And I told my friend that and he said that that wasn’t true. Maybe he heard me wrong but do you actually get to put your preferences?

      @@2xgio In the Marine Air Wing my job was about keeping the Aircraft I worked on able to fly! I only saw my rifle once a month when I checked it out of the Armory to clean it and turn it back in until the next month, or take to the Rifle Range for annual qualifying! Our basic job was to crew, and maintain the Aircraft for combat operations. Most of the time it was like a regular job with times of playing war with real equipment!

      Its okay, even if you get to choose if there is no slot open for your MOS your going where they want you to go. I pick 1 west, 2 oversea, 3 east and I got east because my MOS was full on west and overseas but had like 11 open slots on east. all of my class went straight to east regardless of what they picked.
