I tried rooting Rose of Sharon last year by just trimming some cuttings and putting them into moist soil. Most all rooted and this season they are looking great.
I keep a large pot full of soil, doesn't even have to be "good" soil... & as I prune, I poke the stems into the soil. Keep it watered throughout the growing season. I'm in zone 7, NE Oklahoma. I do not bring this pot indoors for winter. It sits on my East facing, barely covered front porch. My cuttings even bloom in the pot.
I loved your video. I'm not sure if a follow-up video exists. I was hoping to see which method(s) worked well because I plan to try propagating my Rose of Sharon shrubs next summer. Thanks again!
My nana planted a huge one 20 years ago and I now live in her house. She passed away 6 years ago and I inherited the house and all the acres. She has a huge one in the backyard. It comes back every year and I’m looking to propagate it to move it by my garden in the front yard! Thank you so much for this video!!! Followed on instagram!
Did your cuttings grow. I put some in water in August, they rooted and I transfer them to soil in November. I kept them outside in my little greenhouse. I thought they died because all the leaves were gone. I was about to throw them out bit noticed they were still alive. I now have 4 plants growing. Mine is rose of Sharon Althea with the pink center. Please give us an update.
I’m catching this video for the first time 5 months after it was posted. I’m curious to know if you had success with any of the methods! I live on a rental property with beautiful pink and white rose of Sharon and would love to take some clippings someday when I move!
At first I wasn't a fan, but when they bloomed.....😍💕😍 I wanted to dig them all out and give them away when we moved here in December and by August I was propagating them so I could have more!!!😂
I had a Rose of Sharon that was growing beside an oak tree that had excellent soil to grow in because of the Leaf mulch. It would put out seedlings underneath the tree. So, I would recommend putting good compost all around the base of the Rose of Sharon, no mulch, and see if any volunteers pop up. I just bought some in the Chiffon series & they are sterile. So I am very interested in how your cuttings turn out. In zone 9.
It’s on her home page. She did so good. Plus she dug the original one out and planted it in a different spot with a third video on home page. She did a great job!❤
I have done air layering as I find that easy because you just cover a low growing stem with soil, make sure to take the leaves off were it will just be under a couple inches of soil and forget about it for a couple months and let mother nature take care of her baby. Once the baby has rooted cut away from the mother plant and give it a new home. I do this with my other shrubs as well. Hydrangeas, rhododendrons, blue berries, citronella plant….all the same process and you don’t have to change out the water and you don’t have to buy soil or rooting hormone. I learned this back in the 80’s in my horticulture class. By the way I just found out that they don’t offer horticulture classes anymore In Highschool. I am saddened by that because kids could learn to grow food, medicinal benefits, companion planting, poisonous plants…so much knowledge being stripped away. Wood-shop, mechanics, foreign languages, home economics. All being stripped from education. I really hope we can bring this back…these subjects aren’t be talked about for education…other things that are destructive is be pushed… I don’t wish to say but those with common sense and are rooting for good education will get what I am saying. Have a blessed day and happy propagating!
The Rose of Sharon on my property propagates from seed, and I have tiny plants everywhere! I am going to try starting some in water too. Anxious to see how yours turn out.
My neighbors one did this right next to the fence so I just "stole" some cuttings off of the part growing over onto my property. I just stuck the cuttings right into the ground where I want them in my yard and we'll see what happens!
My cuttings dipped in ‘take root’ then planted in potting soil seed cups did sprout. I’m about to do a white Rose of Sharon bc Storm took our fence down and someone originally planted in a corner close to a part of fence still standing but not enough room for them to replace the fence so the plant has to be removed😢. I hope this works. I have a question. My house stays 67 degrees all year indoors. Should I find a safe place outside for the new cuttings since there will be a temperature change putting them indoors then back out if they root in order to plant. Afraid of plant shock which I have had with other plants by bringing them inside to root or sprout. I don’t want a rain or storm to blow them away outside either?? Where is the best place for my cooler house in North TX? Thank you❤
Thanks so much for watching! I'm so happy I tried these methods. Definitely recommend the water propagation and saving seeds ua-cam.com/video/7O2pZoW3D_M/v-deo.html
where I work, some lady was chopping down her rose of Sharon. I walked by and said how beautiful why are you chopping away such a beautiful tree. She said I don't want it, it grows to crazy. Smh ppl just don't appreciate the beauty of nature. I felt so sad..she said you like here. She pulled the flower off and said stick it in the ground and leave it the seeds will fall off and next year you will have this tree in a few years. I never heard of plucking a flower at the base putting it in dirt. I have to ask is this possible? With this particular plant.
It does grow a lot, but all it takes to maintain is a yearly trim. I cant imagine sticking a fresh bloom in the ground would produce a seedling, but if what she handed you was a dried seed pod, or a drying flower, then its very possible if you stick it in the ground it will grow. The plant is very good at reseeding itself and very resilient.
They absolutely do. I have a video transplanting the entire huge shrub a year later. ua-cam.com/video/1S69VNRUNI4/v-deo.htmlsi=8rRCIOiFyHp0YfB5 There's an updated Rose of Sharon video coming later this week
I'm moving from Ohio to North Carolina and am thinking of trying to propagate some stems of our Rose of Sharon outside our home to the new place in NC. I've never done this before and I'm assuming I'll just kill anything but curious which technique worked the best? EDIT: Just saw your follow up video: ua-cam.com/video/7O2pZoW3D_M/v-deo.html
I've been looking for someone to show me how to plant this tree. My husband brought me one a month ago, she's still in her original pot with no flowers yet. Still healthy looking green leaves. I want to just plant her in a pot and not the ground. Any suggestions?
I propagate Rose of Sharon also have had great success. Decide where you want to plant your plant. Plant it in the ground water the first two months it will live. Not to close to anything I like to start as a centerpiece then adding small plants near by makes it fun! God bless it

I can't find the next of this, and it looks like it's been 8 months. Did none of them take? Have you tried air layering propagation?

They ones i had shot out roots and spread. but yes they do make seed on every bloom. I have 3 cuttings now i just got in water.

Best of luck! If all else fails grab the seed pods at the end of the season. Works everytime!

How did your propagation project go?
@@BroadwayGardener I ended up not going through with it. Will be looking for a local nursery instead.
