This is a moment of perfection on so many levels that the remaining 430 characters could not begin to sum up its genius. I mean, come on she is singing "i want to get married" to millions of housewives across The U.S. On the effing View. For God sakes that's on the the level of having Steven Colbert perform at the White House Correspondent's Dinner for the Republican party.
She's terrifically talented. In her attitude there's something complex that I can never quite pin down: she combines shyness and aggression, sweetness and bitterness, in ways that suggest that a lot is going on her mind.
It's positively devlish the way she laughs "with" these ladies from the beginning. They're so clueless... Wow - very smart, funny and lovely all at once. She's great!
what I love is the way Elizabeth Hasselbeck doesn't have a clue that Nellie is putting her on, or that the songs is ironic humour. Joy Behar gets it...Elizabeth believes everything she hears is actual longing for old fashioned marriage.
I feel she is a brilliant artist whose talent as a musician is dwarfed only with her ability to to feel so much of whats around her. Regardless of whether one enjoys her music or not the feeling she puts behind it is enough to move humanity. That why she is amazing...
she enlightens people with her work. these poor host dont get it... the show is called the view and their job is to interview... their questions for her are are so off but the way she responds to it is remarkable. thank goodness.
I just discovered Nellie McKay and i can't get enough of her songs. This one (im thinking of: I want to get married) reminded me of "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" - but this one with a little more positive angle.
1) joy definitely understood it. i knew she would, joy never lets me down... and 2? GET. those sneakers. off. of that beautiful piano. O. M. G. i don't care how clean they are!
Ditto on all of that, except for the album title - I did read somewhere that it was a play on the Norah Jones title, and it would fall in line with her sense of humor perfectly, I would say it's quite plausible that it was intentional atleast in part.
Nellie McKay Fans: She'll be a guest, chatting with Rabbi Sol Solomon, on the "Dave's Gone By" podcast Saturday, May 4, 2019! Watch the show live, 9-11:30am(Eastern) on Facebook: facebook.com/davesgoneby. If you miss it, the show will then be archived at www.davesgoneby.com.
I like how she's being obnoxious but she's sort of embarrassed about it at the same time. And it's hilarious how they assume the song is sincere. She makes me feel horrible about myself; I'm 19 and I can't imagine being as badass as she is in ten years, let alone now.
Am I the only one that thought it was hilarious how the ladies on the View had no idea what the song was really about. It was obvious they had never heard her music.
Kinda like Colbert performing for President Bush. I don't think they understand she's making fun of them. (Woops - I didn't notice someone else had made the same comparison. Great minds).
Hilariously ironic and satirical song! This lady was a class act...even at the age of 19. In some ways she seems like a time traveller from the 1940s...but with that kind of attitude, the music industry wouldn't have warmed to her then, in spite of her considerable talent. Hell...she is still edgy at times even now! "Sui generis"!
They probably were only "prepped" (on paper) prior to the show-taping ONLY of the song-title-- either chosen off the 'track-listing' on the back of the CD, by any one of the four "co-hosts" or by Nelly herself? Interesting to ponder haha
She does look like the First Lady, but I think that she is being somewhat ironic about the whole thing! ;-) Something that the interviewers only really get by the time she sings "my shallow life"!
Not a "Fact". Wikipedia says she's 27 but that is a less than reliable source. An article on NPR, a more reliable source, says she was 19 as of Feb 26, 2004 which makes her 24-25 now. That makes this video from 2004.
I couldn't have put it better. But, man, this is one of the most incredibly bizarre clips I've seen on youtube...which is saying a lot. Doesn't the beginning just make you squirm in your seat?
the only way I would do Hasselback is if I could make it to where she couldn't speak well she could still scream but as far as talking the only thing she would be able to say is harder
I definitely think Joy got it. But, wWhat did Joy say? Right at the end - she makes a strange face, semi-smiling and says..."What a _______________!" Did she like the song, or did she make a disparaging remark? I'm pretty sure Joy is unmarried, been happily "living-in-sin" for about 20 years.
the video blips out/skips the word "you" when she says a "sugar cake for you to take to work in the morning" thus messing up (censoring?) one of the most sarcastic lines. And sissyduck is right - how totally awkward to have to sing with them in her face like that.
@acerbicvoice anti-social is socially destructive; an anti-social person is one who would beat the pulp out of somebody and laugh or someone who would burn down somebody's house for no reason.
At the age of 19 years old and she is so confident , and talented. I'm sure u wouldn't mind her to be a role model of kids these days. Now days, Miley and Selena and the JB are like god like to teens. It's out of control.
A little more research reveals she was born Eleanora Marie on Apr 13, 1984 in London England but she grew up in New York City. That combined with the fact her first album was released in 2004 when she as, as stated in the video, 19, I believe that, without a doubt, she is not 27 but 25. Case closed.
The irony goddess of all time! Love her!
Nellie throwing shade like a beach umbrella 💕

OMG 19!! She is an old spirit :)
This song and Nellie McKay's feminism has obviously gone way over their heads.
Incredible voice, song writing, and piano talent!
You rock Nellie!
thanks for leaving the ad in at the end, couldn't have done without that.
LOL, I love the line 'read Danielle Steele', hilarious.
Nellie's amazing (artistically, politically...).
Bought all of her CDs & gonna buy the next. Thanks for posting.
What a gorgeous piano player
How the hell did they NOT understand the context of that song? "...that's why I was born." Someone obviously did not do their research. Classic!
What a beautiful voice, lyrics, & music.
And i think i was born to hear your song.
listen to the NPR interview of Nellie Mckay with Terry Gross. it is amazing, it was on 11/23/07
Jimmy Dore brought me here
Ha! Me too!
Ha! Me too!
@@sixstringemotion Me too. Conservative too. I'm tellin ya - we can work together. We can do it.
Lol !!!! Me too lol !!!!!
:) this is song is fantastic
she's fantastic.
Nellie is amazing...such a great song!
imagine how confused these chicks would be if she sung Mother of Pearl.
what I love is the way Elizabeth Hasselbeck doesn't have a clue that Nellie is putting her on, or that the songs is ironic humour. Joy Behar gets it...Elizabeth believes everything she hears is actual longing for old fashioned marriage.
Kskdjdjdjdk
She was actually 22 here. Born in 82, album came out in 04, the View always trippin
C´est ce qu´on appelle être complètement à côté de la plaque! You go Nellie!
She's amazing, i love her,
Totally natural, i understand her song, it's like a 'sometimes' XD
The entire song is so tongue in cheek. I was surprised that anyone wouldn`t see the irony.
This wonderful girl has a sense of irony that far surpasses her young age!
I feel she is a brilliant artist whose talent as a musician is dwarfed only with her ability to to feel so much of whats around her.
Regardless of whether one enjoys her music or not the feeling she puts behind it is enough to move humanity. That why she is amazing...
Pure talent.
i LOVE how the one's like funny ur album names get away from me but the songs i wanna get married just not understanding xD
she enlightens people with her work. these poor host dont get it... the show is called the view and their job is to interview... their questions for her are are so off but the way she responds to it is remarkable. thank goodness.

possibly one of the most ironic events in recent history
I know.. and hats off to her for managing to perform with them all sat right next to her grinning inanely.. seriously they never stop 0_o
She's amazing :)
1) joy definitely understood it. i knew she would, joy never lets me down...
and 2?
GET. those sneakers. off. of that beautiful piano. O. M. G. i don't care how clean they are!
She's dazzling.
beautiful
Classic voice!
life is fucking hilarious.
Ditto on all of that, except for the album title - I did read somewhere that it was a play on the Norah Jones title, and it would fall in line with her sense of humor perfectly, I would say it's quite plausible that it was intentional atleast in part.
Under the word "Irony" in the New American Dictionary ... just a picture of Nellie Mckay.
genius yet attractive!!!
Jazz lives on.
haha I was thinking the same thing!
One of the funnier things I've seen lately.
I'm pretty sure Joy laughs, makes an odd face, and says, "What the Fuck's going on?" So, she got it.

Most sources - a lot say 1982 for the birth year. She was 22 in 2004 NOT 20.
Love it, the sarcasm is perfect.
Well said.
"what the fuck was that?" xD
I like how she's being obnoxious but she's sort of embarrassed about it at the same time. And it's hilarious how they assume the song is sincere.

I love her clothes ;~;
Kinda like Colbert performing for President Bush. I don't think they understand she's making fun of them.

I really wonder what her reaction was when she was told about going on this show.... : )
She is an absolute hoot! Can’t tell if she is putting people on or if she is really that dipsy. Either way, great voice!
They probably were only "prepped" (on paper) prior to the show-taping ONLY of the song-title-- either chosen off the 'track-listing' on the back of the CD, by any one of the four "co-hosts" or by Nelly herself? Interesting to ponder haha
I wanna get married too. A blonde genius.
seriously, i think i was almost more amused by there bemused reactions...it was so obvious they did NOT know what to make of it ;)
what's edited at the 3:54 mark? (after the "sugar cake" line in the song? I don't have this double CD yet)
@LoveForPhysics Get Away from Me came out in 2004 so it'd be 04-05 I guess.
both
She does look like the First Lady, but I think that she is being somewhat ironic about the whole thing! ;-) Something that the interviewers only really get by the time she sings "my shallow life"!
Ella Fitzgerald lives again!

"In honor of people dying of heart disease, go buy these shoes." Can't I just give to their medical expenses? "No! Go buy these shoes!"
Anlamazlar guzum anlamazlar.
I couldn't have put it better. But, man, this is one of the most incredibly bizarre clips I've seen on youtube...which is saying a lot. Doesn't the beginning just make you squirm in your seat?
She is so much smarter than those women interviewing her......
awesome stuff.
oh, she's awesome. but that's amazingly creepy to have the view women sitting right on the frickin piano.
"So great, so great" (i think)...
either that or "so brave" or "no way" lol
the only way I would do Hasselback is if I could make it to where she couldn't speak well she could still scream but as far as talking the only thing she would be able to say is harder

No, you're thinking of a sociopath. Not the same thing.
Wow it looks like she says that so much.. did she??
At the age of 19 years old and she is so confident , and talented. I'm sure u wouldn't mind her to be a role model of kids these days.
Now days, Miley and Selena and the JB are like god like to teens. It's out of control.
could it be more obvious that none of those hosts have listened to a single second of her music?
Actually she was born 1967 and she's half black....or half Japanese????
Star wants to get married.

Nellie has more talent in her pinky finger than Adele has on her whole body.
Well, that's completely unfair and bigoted. Or did you forget art is subjective? Hopefully you've grown up in eight years.
Is this the FIRST LADY???
lol.
I don't understand why she looks like she came straight of the 90's?
Comedian
I think Joy got it.
Elizabeth Hasselback isn't 1/10 as bad as Rosie O'Donnell was. In fact she has mellowed out since Rosie left.
After listening to this song, Star Jones got married to the gay guy.
I would give Nellie McKay five stars if she’d take her clothes off!
What the hell are you talking about?
way to quote George Carlin, but i disagree in regards to Nellie McKay
yeah, she is obviously brighter than the mile-a-minute-show-biz-women that clearly love her but unfortunately misinterpret the song a little.
they have no idea what this song is about
You obviously don't listen to Suzanne Vega at all, because she sounds nothing like this girl.
She doesn't like Bush or Trump.
I love her but 'nineteen' my ass.
whoslistening2u she was 22 actually
she sounds like Suzanne Vega... been done and much better before
stupid shoes...
amygdala3290 are you bipolar?
