To know Phyllis story and then listen to this one can't help to feel her emotion from beginning to end. I wish she would have found help and we had kept that beautiful woman here with us longer 😥
My favorite female singer in my era along with Aretha Franklin. You need to hear more of her music, because of the feelings that she puts in her music and the way her songs touch your heart. That was Phyllis Hyman whistling in that song.
She also did the whistle. A Philly native but we loved her in DC! I've seen her many times and her performances were unbelievable. Blues Alley and the Carter Baron venues in DC seeing her perform was magic. I miss her so much.
Much love to you Lizzie ... when you made that "Scrunch" face, it was clear you felt her in this song. It is unfortunate that, as talented as she was, she suffered with mental health issues much of her adulthood ... culminating in her taking her life shortly before her 46th birthday. She was a gem of an artist (music and theater) ... and she is missed to this day. Another suggestion would be her song called "Old Friend" ... that song was great as well.
Wishing you wellness @Lizzie[edit]! The late Ms. Phyllis Hyman sang that from the depth of her SOUL! She was singing lived experiences. That is her whistling. There is a video of her on a late night show doing the song live and whistling. Prayers for her Soul. #BrainHealth #Learnthesigns #BeKindandCompassionate 💚;🧠🫂
I have an under-the-radar song by her that will make you as a woman cry, because of the message and the way she sings it called "I Refuse to be Lonely"
I absolutely love Phyllis Hyman! You feel every single word she sings very deeply! I must admit I feel sadness because of her life story. Her words are her story and when she whistles it sounds so beautiful! Watch her story. I believe it’s still available on UA-cam.
Lizzie, when you said you hadn't heard of Phyllis Hyman, I knew you were going to absolutely love her! She was such a remarkably talented singer and even performed on Broadway. Her career started in the late 70's with her biggest hit "You Know How to Love Me" released in 79. Others have already recommended other songs and it's a rabbit hole you truly enjoy. Looking forward to more Phyllis Hyman. Take care Lizzie!❤
You need to hear Her sing. This live in front of an audience. That video is out she has on. A Egypt like head on tall hat. The emotion she sings this song with is So real
Whenever I hear this song I always think that I wish she could have seen herself theway her fans did. Oh that whistling was her. Her mom taught her how to do that.
Instant subscriber, and that was just based off your facial expressions. Ive been listening to this song for 30 years, and it still hits me the way it hit you today. I am a super music head, with Soul being my favorite genre. Whether it be natural empathy or personal experience, i truly appreciate someone who can tap into the emotions exuded by artists/songs like this. Phyllis was really one of them ones. RiP. For years, i would check for people reacting to her and there was no1, and today i decided to check again, and have seen several. Im so happy to see people FINALLY reacting to the 🐐, Phyllis Hyman. One of the greatest voices and most soulful singers to ever bless us. She definitely knew how to convey her hurt/pain, and you recognized it. Unfortunately we lost her to depression RIP. That whistle you hear throughout the song, which most would think is an intrument or digitally produced, is actually her. Please check out the 1987 live version of the song. I wouldn't be mad if you did a reaction to it. If you've never seen Spike Lee's School Daze, check it out. It addresses colorizm. She's in it, and performs at a party. There are 2 other performances/songs in the movie that i think deserve reactions. Tisha Campbell (of Martin/My Wife & Kids) - "be alone tonight", and Keith John, "I can only be me." One last long, one that hits my heart in a similar way as this one, is India Arie - Good Mourning. When you can, check out Miss Hyman's Unsung, get to know her and her story. I'll leave you a link ✌🏾 be blessed www.dailymotion.com/video/x6to8il
What a heartfelt response to an exquisite vocalist-and, a tortured soul. The pain this woman felt came out in her songs. There was no frontin’ in her delivery. What a great response to a fabulous artist. I hope you do more reactions to her music.
I love the fact that you hear the arrangements in the songs, piano, guitar, bass, horns and especially strings, as most people take that for granted. You are truly a musical soul. Please consider reacting to Kenny Loggins "The Real Thing" as it has all those elements and a great story as he sings to his kids about his divorce and what true love is about. Keep up the great work, we appreciate you(like me about to turn 60) for keeping the music alive!!!😊
Hey Liz, about time you finally played one of my favorite singers of all times!! "The Incredible Ms. Phyllis Hyman"! Very sultry, sexy and soulful singer, in my opinion very underrated for a person of her vocal skills! I have every album she has made, it's not one song of hers I didn't like or love! I met and talked with her in 85 at a concert before she went on stage to perform! I was very smitten from her beauty and grace, a very classy woman! I was devastated to hear the passing of Phyllis Hyman (06/30/95), it was like I lost an old and Dear friend! You can't go wrong with any of her songs but heres a couple anyway (You Know How To Love Me), (The Answer Is You) , (Betcha By Golly Wow) and (Loviing You----Losing You)! Well my Dear I ran my mouth long enough, you take care and stay safe! Vibe Squad Out!
We know sometimes you can recall back and remember some of these past songs. However this is a great classic treasure from one of the best. I believe you will enjoy. Rip my Angel.
Liz, I enjoyed your reaction to Phyllis Hyman's Living All Alone. Since you asked for other songs by her, here is a list of some of my favorites: Whatever Happened To Our Love Living In Confusion Walk Away I Can't Take It Anymore When I Give My Love (This Time) Don't Wanna Change The World I Found Love Ain't You Had Enough Love Old Friend No One Can Love You More Give Me One Reason To Stay Back To Paradise Waiting For The Last Tear To Fall I Refuse To Be Lonely Enjoy reviewing these! Phyllis was one of the greatest vocalists to ever do it. My favorite female vocalist. Unfortunately, this song was a mirror into her life and soul. She was loved by so many, and she never knew it. Numerous failed relationships, bouts of depression and loneliness lead her to take her own life. She is greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her music. R.I.P. 😪
I know that's a popular opinion, but it states in her biography that Phyllis knew how very much she was loved. The problem was that "she didn't love herself." It's tragic how she was tormented by bipolar disorder & addiction. The biography also points out that during the time this song was written, produced, & performed - she was actually very happy & in a great romantic relationship. You can listen to the epilogue of her biography on my channel if you like. Cheers!
Hi girl! Alkways a pleasure when I come accross one of your videos. You are so honest with your reactions and all you do. You are a stunning beauty and you brighten my day. Keep doing what you do. There's an old British guy here that appreciates you.
If you're familiar with Phyllis' Herstory..... Nancy Wilson was a Mentor and Close Friend... SO, you can understand the EXCELLENCE in Tone and Vocal Phrasing....
Song to react to by Phyllis Hyman Somewhere in My Lifetime Meet Me On The Moon Living In Confusion The Answer is You I Refuse To Be Lonely Old Friend Betcha By Golly Wow Be One from Spike Lee 's movie School Daze soundtrack
Phyllis doesn’t miss but if you want some suggestions here are just a few. You Know How to Love Me; Living in Confusion; Somewhere In My Lifetime; We Both Need Each Other.
There's gratitude all around for this video, Lizzie. My favorite Phyllis Hyman song is "You Know How To Love Me". I really enjoy sharing my experience with Phyllis Hyman's music. I bought her CD because of "You Know How To Love Me", and when I played it every song on it was a treasure to listen to. I would suggest choosing any track from her greatest hits CD, and listen to it. When great women vocalists are discussed, Phyllis Hyman's name should definitely be included. Watching your Phyllis Hyman video is pure joy, Lizzie. Thank you P.S., I've pulled/tweaked muscles and it's very uncomfortable to live with that pain. One of the best ways to help is to soak in warm/hot water with Epsom salt. My best wishes for your recovery, Lizzie.
I first heard her on a Chuck Mangione song, Consuelo's Love Theme. She is hauntingly angel from another world like.I then bought some of her albums in early 80s but was so sad to learn of her passing. Her voice reflects the deep feelings she was able to convey when singing from her lonely dark place.
Sorry to read of this artist's tragic life story. I don’t recall hearing of her. She was clearly very talented. This song is haunting. Captivating. Well produced. Wow !! Merry Christmas to you and yours, Lizzie The Gangster Hippie .
Your “heartfelt” response perfectly mirrors this goddess’s soulful release of song. So…you want more, Lizzie? Ok…here you go: -Why Did You Turn Me On -No One Can Love You More -Meet Me On The Moon -Old Friend -The Answer Is You -Be Careful How You Treat My Love (p.s. Please have plenty tissues handy.)

@@AngelHoll yes… lol I grow up in the 50’s. I hung out with Phyllis when she lived in Philly. We were supposed to come see her perform at the Apollo but it became a day (June 30, 1995) I’ll never forget. 💔She passed just before her 46th birthday (July 6, 1949). Also her cousin is a dear friend of mine. Phyllis was a beautiful, gifted, funny, take no stuff person. Besides being an amazing artist, she designed her clothing. Even had a boutique. Hope you will continue to checkout her music. Phyllis left us an incredible legacy of her music. 💜
The pain and sorrow you hear in her voice is real. Becuz her soul was broken. Not to sensationalize it but she ended her stay on this plane herself becuz of that broken soul.
Hi Lizzie, one more suggestion for you; "Still not over you(getting over me)" by Michael McDonald. It's pure 70s vibe, came out 2007. Great story line and of course that smooth as silk Michael Mcdonald vocal. Thanks for all you do, you're amazing!
How ya doing Lizzie? Nice reaction. The recommendation I'm giving you probably at least I feel can only be reacted to in two parts. Stevie Wonder the short instrumental (Send One your Love) rught after the short interlude the song itself by Stevie Wonder song (Send One your Love). Enjoy and have a blessed one. 👍
I love that song!! However…if you do too??…you need to hear the cover done by Lenny Williams. From one music lover to another-I’d like to know what you think.

Check out "I Refuse to be Lonely"@@bustaknutt5556
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention her whistling on this track! Most people would think it was an instrument (other than her voice). ❤
Phyllis’s voice and music is timeless!

She also did the whistle. A Philly native but we loved her in DC! I've seen her many times and her performances were unbelievable. Blues Alley and the Carter Baron venues in DC seeing her perform was magic. I miss her so much.
