@@vnach299 she won two oscars 1970 and 1973 for the best actress but she didnt show up. You should see her perfomance in women in love. Its outstanding 😍
To those who say Art Carny did not deserve this Oscar I would suggest that you re-watch the two scenes in Harry And Tonto in which Harry tells his cat about how much the world has changed since his youth, how his wife suffered before she died and how much he misses her. They are not flashy scenes, just beautifully acted and moving. Art Carney's Oscar win for this film takes nothing away from the other nominee's amazing performances. Great acting comes in many different shapes and forms.
LOVE that ART CARNEY won the Oscar for HARRY AND TONTO, an under-rated little gem of a movie that I appreciate much more now that I am getting older. Also, never believed ANYONE should win an Oscar if they can't be bothered to show up for the ceremony, and only he and Jack showed up, and it wasn't Jack's time yet.
The producers obviously didn't think Art Carney would win. Look at that far back, crummy middle of the row seat. I bet Jack (and Pacino, if he would have showed up) are on the aisle in the first or second row.
YES! I REALLY WATCHED IT and he did not deserve the Oscar! In fact, it was probably the worst best actor win in academy history with Cliff Robertson winning for Charly in 1968, a close second.
Art Carney deserved this award he was a great actor and entertainer that film made me cry when the cat died it just breaks your heart the picture was fabulous !!!!!
Many times I read that Al Pacino didn't deserve an oscar for Scent of a woman, but I never read that Art Carney didn't deserve this oscar when this oscar was deserved for Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson or Dustin Hoffman. So f**k the Oscars.
Nowadays everybody who wins an acting Oscar gets a standing ovation. In those days they were extremely rare--the fact that the audience rose to its feet tells me that the voting wasn't even close. I was so happy at the time that Mr Carney won--he was brilliant in Harry and Tonto. (and BTW at age 55 he played a 72 year old).
Gene Hackman should have been nominated for The Conversation over Albert Finney. Al Pacino in The Godfather 2 is my favorite male acting performance. In hindsight, the wrong person won.
Worst Best Actor winners in my opinion- 10) Jack Lemon, Save the Tiger over Marlon Brando, Last Tango in Paris 9) Al Pacino, Scent of a woman over Denzel washington, Malcolm X 8) Peter Finch, Network over Robert DeNiro, Taxi Driver 7) Tom Hanks, Philadelphia over Anthony Hopkins, The Remains of the Day 6) Jack Nicholson, As good as it gets over Robert Duvall, The Apostle 5) Cliff Robertson Charly over Peter O'toole The Lion in Winter 4) Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur over Jack Lemmon, Some Like it Hot 3) John Wayne, True Grit over John Voight, Midnight Cowboy 2) Roberto Benigni, Life is Beautiful over Ian Mckellen, Gods and Monsters 1) Art Carney, Harry and Tonto over Al Pacino, Godfather 2
You only need to see the reaction of the audience to see what a popular choice this was. He was a brilliant actor, a beloved star, and richly deserved this award. See the film. It's a beautiful performance.
It shows Glenda Jackson's amazing class that she turns up to PRESENT the honor (which is expected of the winner of the previous year) but is absent for the two times she won the leading actress award. She has no ego and zero tolerance for the glamourous hobnobbing that goes with a movie career - an amazing woman!
Humble, gracious,-well deserved. His performance is one of the most heart-breaking I have ever seen. Hard to watch-but a must see classic performance by one of the greats.
How was this even the least bit justifiable? Pacino said he was going through a rebellious stage in his young career so perhaps he wasn't in the good graces of many voters at this point. Regardless, he was perfect as the dark-souled, pragmatic star of hands down the best film released in the last 50 years.
Art Carney was in WW2 as an infantryman and machine gun crewman. During the Battle of Normandy serving in the 28th Infantry Division, he was wounded in the leg by shrapnel and walked with a limp for the rest of his life. As a result of the injury, his right leg was 3/4-inch shorter than his left.
It just astounds me how brain-dead some of these commentors are... absolutely trashing Art Carney, moaning about how HE robbed Pacino and the gang out of their Oscar wins. Hell, there are even whole blogs about how Carney winning this award this year, ended up "destroying" the balance of future Best Actor wins (and supposedly still a factor, 40 years later!). What they don't get is that ART CARNEY DIDNT PROCLAIM HIMSELF THE WINNER! His win was decided by the Academy voters, so if these idiots feel the need to blame someone, blame them! Art Carney was a great actor, who gave a great performance, and was awarded for his work. Period.
I agree. Art Carney gave a great performance in Harry and Tonto and earned that award. He was one of those rare actors who could do both comedy and drama, and, in this case, he did both of them wonderfully in the film. Furthermore, that man was a television legend.
But here’s the thing. How many people remember Art Carney’s performance or even the Movie itself as much as Al Pacino in Godfather 2 and Jack Nicholson in Chinatown?
Why does that matter? The best performance can be seen by 7 people and still be the best. The award isn't for the most popular performance. You can see by the reaction of the audience what a happy choice this was. They NEVER gave standing ovations to winners back then.
I am one of the supporters of Art Carney winning an Oscar for HARRY AND TONTO, this was one of the most unexpected, surprising, and delightful Oscar victories of all time. Art Carney was one of the most under-rated actors who deserved far more recognition than he ever got in Hollywood. I'm glad he won.
I know the very popular choice was for Pacino to take it. However, this was an incredible achievement for a very lovable and aging actor of that time. This is actually a very good story that came out of this ceremony. The audience shows us this after he was announced the winner.
That one too. Pacino was robbed for a lot of his best oscar-nominated performances like The Godfather: Part II, DDA, and Serpico. And he should've been nominated for Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco and The Insider.
You didn't see as many Oscar winners get standing ovations back then as you do today. Say what you want about Pacino being the favourite but Carney turned in a wonderful performance. And no one in the building was happier for him than Sinatra...
I understand that some people have a crush on Al Pacino, but Art Carney was good in this movie. The movie has no explosions, or murders, or car chases, or machine guns, or histrionics in general, so some people might be bored by it. Art Carney's job was to play a lonely, old man. He did a good job.
dude, artr carney was one of the greatest comedians of all time...if not for this movie ..he deserved to have his moment ,...dont ya think? and he passed away soon after ...and the other actors nominated went on to win many awards ...things sometimes happen for a reason we do not know at thge time ..i believe he was due for a moiment lik,e thnis & got it ..LOOK HOW HAPPY AND PROUD HE WAS! way to go art@!
Renee mason Art Carney didn't pass away soon after? He died in 2003, nearly 30 years after winning this Oscar. He also continued to work steadily until 1993, when he retired at 75.
oh..lol...i didnt rea;lize thAT said 1975..he looked so old! but my best friend is his neice and she told mew he was also very very large when he passed ...he had gained aLOT of weight ..soi i was way off
A few years prior to this, George C. Scott refused to accept the Best Actor award for Patton because he said he didn't become an actor to be in competition with other actors for awards. It's been said that the only way you can truly judge who was the best in a particular year would be to have all five actors play the same part. And, yes, politics and sentiment have always figured in the judging. But with that said, Art Carney was just as deserving as Pacino or Nicholson that year, and if you don't know that, it's probably because you're too young to realize what people face as they get old.
Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson must have split the vote in such a manner that it gave Top Honors to Carney. How else can you explain two of the greatest, most iconic performances of all time losing to one that is largely obscure and unseen.
One of the great mystery of this world: how on Earth did this guy win an oscar over Al Pacino (The Godfather 2)? Al Pacino as Michael Corleone was the best peformance ever in the history of cinema.
All of the actors were great. But how many of them had to practically play a role by himself with a cat. And make it compelling. That's why Art Carney won.
Art Carney was awarded for a winning performance. All nominees "deserve" an Oscar, but only one is voted by peers to receive the Oscar. Pacino didn't think he got "robbed"...why should anybody else think so? Like the saying goes..."He EARNED it!".
And considering the Oscar that Al Pacino did win for in Scent of a Woman in 1992 was another of those undeserving Oscar's that too many actors&actresses get when they win an Oscar for the wrong role or performance.
The Oscar should of went to Jack or Al Pacino, my vote would have definitely went to Pacino. It is one of the greatest screen performances ever! My guess is his performance in GF2, though wonderful, was too depressing and moody for the Academy to have noticed unfortunately. I'm sure he would have won today if this were done over again.
I think Art Carney got the Oscar because everyone knew he would show up! I'm old enough to remember the early 1970's and actors were snubbing the Oscars. In 1970, George C. Scott refused his Oscar for "Patton". In 1972, Marlon Brando refused his Oscar for "The Godfather" and sent a surrogate to decline it for him. If you look at this clip, three of the nominees are "no shows": Dustin Hoffman; Albert Finney and Al Pacino. (If Pacino was there, the camera couldn't find him because all they had was a photo of him when his nomination was announced.) The Academy was fed up with "no shows" and actors refusing the award. So . . . voila! Art Carney! Everyone knew he would show up and he wasn't going to refuse the award.
You confuse anger with poise. Glenda has always been an extremely refined and intellectual lady - let's not forget that she's a working class girl from Merseyside. She gets to the point. She's salt of the earth.
Many times there is a special diamond among other diamonds .Art Carney (Honeymooners) is that special diamond in "Harry and Tonto'.He deserved this win.Good for him.
Critics and a large part of the public consider it unfair that Art Carney won the Oscar, but for me this was one of the fairest awards. Few films for me are as tender and touching as Harry and Tonto.
All of Godfather 2, Michael Corleone conveys so much in just subtle glances. It’s some of the most thought provoking acting ever put to film. Art Carney is a G, but this Oscar belonged to Al Pacino
Serpico was the performance that Pacino should have won an Oscar. He owned that performance. He was probably in almost every scene and you forgot you were watching Pacino.
+Renan C. Maia Ha. Interesting. And both of them don't have any use apparently for the Academy Awards, as neither ever showed up at any of the ceremonies when nominated and/or won. If actors have that much disdain for the Oscar, then why don't they just reject the nomination or the win altogether, like George C. Scott did? Really shocked to see that Glenda Jackson ever showed up even to present. She was about as elusive as Katharine Hepburn at the Oscars.
No, actually, he wasn't. If you watch when Benicio Del Torro (I should've checked the spelling on his name first) won that year, you'll see that Finney wasn't present when the lineup of nominees for Best Supporting Actor were read off. Also, later in the ceremony, when Julia Roberts won for Brockovich, she said nice words about Finney and there was heavy applause from the audience, but no reaction from Finney because he was a no-show.
+roscoegino Who says? Art Carney was a true GENIUS. Look at his work in "The Honeymooners" and other work. His range was astonishing. Anyway, it's silly to compare art. Sports, yes; art, no. And neither actor was better than Dustin Hoffman, as well. They were all great.
An amazing win considering the competition, however Mr. Carney deserved it! A wonderful performance. If you haven't seen the film, I encourage you to do so.
I saw that movie once in my childhood and never forgot it. Very touching, realistic especially in today's time. Love the cat too. So glad I googled and discovered the correct title of this movie. Going to watch again.
INTERNETWORK Wow. You’re entitled to your opinion, but how anyone that can watch the abortion scene in GF2 especially and interpret that as Pacino simply going through the motions is beyond me.
I would not go that far, but his performance in the first Godfather was more interesting. The second was much more about DeNiro's character. I think people get passionate about it because to them The Godfather movies are like the best movies ever, so they should have gotten all the statues. No movie should ever get all the statues. Because that's boring.
Then why was he there? Didn't even have an Indian or something ready to accept the award for him. I tell you this much, his speech would have been a lot longer than Carney's. They'd have had to play him off the stage. If they dared. He got all the acclaim he deserved for his body of work over the years, and he really did deserve it. Personally, I'd have given it to him for The Insider, or maybe Looking for Richard. We all have our favorite Pacino moments.
I think Pacino in the early to mid 70's probably had the best run of any actor that I've seen, and The Godfather II was his best performance. How he didn't win one Oscar (especially this one) is beyond me.

Many screaming "Al should have won it" but have never seen Harry & Tonto. It was a great movie too.
Pacing was much more fascinating in the original and should of won then, but not for the sequel
No body talks about Harry n Tonto...! But everybody knows The Godfather . Ask a native African from the masai tribe they will tell you who Michael Corleone is.
Glenda Jackson's one and only appearance at the Oscars!
Exactly!!
thank god for that. she was a biitch.
@@bicwhittle7820 why?
Al Pacino gave like the greatest performance ever in the godfather 2, how in the world would they give it art carney is just beyond me.
Because Art Carney was great
Did you ever watch "Harry and Tonto"? I mean, REALLY watch it?
Sorry but Al Pacino in Godfather 2, never amazed me… you have to respect everyone taste
That standing ovation says it all.
Art Carney deserved this award he was a great actor and entertainer that film made me cry when the cat died it just breaks your heart the picture was fabulous !!!!!
A snub if I have ever seen one, ever since this I could never take the Oscars seriously
Many times I read that Al Pacino didn't deserve an oscar for Scent of a woman, but I never read that Art Carney didn't deserve this oscar when this oscar was deserved for Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson or Dustin Hoffman.
So f**k the Oscars.
Yep every time they screw an actor they have to make up for it and screw another later.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I'm so grateful. This is one of the most deserving wins in this category ever.
To receive an Oscar from Glenda Jackson's majestic hands. Now, that's overwhelming.
Art Carney's performance in Harry and Tonto is original and brilliant. He deserved an Oscar, no doubt. So did the cat Tonto!
Art Carney also won five television Emmy award plus I think a Tony award on Broadway so he had to be a great actor to be that be able to do all that.
Loved his 'Norton' moves as he was walking to the stage
Everybody still remembered, Ed even in 1974
This oscar is so deserved. A brilliant performance.
Gene Hackman should have been nominated for The Conversation over Albert Finney. Al Pacino in The Godfather 2 is my favorite male acting performance. In hindsight, the wrong person won.
I agree about Hackman. Also, I think he should have actually won had he been nominated.
Wasn't Albert Finney bisexual?
Someone here said that Art Carney passed away shortly after the Oscars. He lived another 28 years.
Worst Best Actor winners in my opinion-
10) Jack Lemon, Save the Tiger over Marlon Brando, Last Tango in Paris
9) Al Pacino, Scent of a woman over Denzel washington, Malcolm X
8) Peter Finch, Network over Robert DeNiro, Taxi Driver
7) Tom Hanks, Philadelphia over Anthony Hopkins, The Remains of the Day
6) Jack Nicholson, As good as it gets over Robert Duvall, The Apostle
5) Cliff Robertson Charly over Peter O'toole The Lion in Winter
4) Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur over Jack Lemmon, Some Like it Hot
3) John Wayne, True Grit over John Voight, Midnight Cowboy
2) Roberto Benigni, Life is Beautiful over Ian Mckellen, Gods and Monsters
1) Art Carney, Harry and Tonto over Al Pacino, Godfather 2
I agree. Al Pacino totally deserved the oscar for the Godfather part 2. I feel the academy are overlooking memorable and powerful performances.
I would add Julia Roberts (Brockovich) over Ellen Burstyn (Requiem For A Dream)
How was the movie an insult? It was powerful, funny, devastating and showed the inhumanity of war and the holocaust? Did you even see it?
Peter Finch, John Wayne, and Art Carney are worthy of their Oscars!
John Wayne did fuck all in True Grit. Oscar should've gone to Voight or Hoffman that year.
You only need to see the reaction of the audience to see what a popular choice this was. He was a brilliant actor, a beloved star, and richly deserved this award. See the film. It's a beautiful performance.
Even Pacino himself would of voted for Carney's performance that year
It shows Glenda Jackson's amazing class that she turns up to PRESENT the honor (which is expected of the winner of the previous year) but is absent for the two times she won the leading actress award. She has no ego and zero tolerance for the glamourous hobnobbing that goes with a movie career - an amazing woman!
Humble, gracious,-well deserved. His performance is one of the most heart-breaking I have ever seen. Hard to watch-but a must see classic performance by one of the greats.
Seeing Sinatra at the end smiling was worth it even if Al didn't win.
A richly deserved award (yes, I've seen the others !)
Thank you pal!
He carried the whole movie, he was in every scene and didn't hit one false note. And was only in his mid-50s, playing an old man.
I am one of the supporters of Art Carney winning an Oscar for HARRY AND TONTO,
this was one of the most unexpected, surprising, and delightful Oscar victories of
all time. Art Carney was one of the most under-rated actors who deserved far more
recognition than he ever got in Hollywood. I'm glad he won.
Saw Harry & Tonto when I was young such a great film.
Godfather part 2 si much better
@@jacksonderas8247 that's why it won Best Picture, but Art Carney was out of this world in H&T
@@SwimmerPrince al pacino desearve that Oscar, no this fucking old man
All the salty people in the comments up in arms over Art Carney winning.
Everyone of of those guys should have won. I watch the Oscars these days and think, my god what happened
Pacino was robbed. His performance in Godfather 2 was by far the best that year... and one of the greatest performances ever.
He was also robbed for Serpico as well
Al Pacino should have won for Godfather 2.
I know the very popular choice was for Pacino to take it. However, this was an incredible achievement for a very lovable and aging actor of that time. This is actually a very good story that came out of this ceremony. The audience shows us this after he was announced the winner.
I know many feel Pacino was robbed, but look at the audience’s reaction. They clearly felt Carney’s win was deserving.
Pacino gave arguably the greatest performance of all time
brando in streetcar is the most important performance in cinematic history
That one too. Pacino was robbed for a lot of his best oscar-nominated performances like The Godfather: Part II, DDA, and Serpico. And he should've been nominated for Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco and The Insider.
Very deserved win for a wonderful man.
Where's the award for Tonto!?
Also great man, so deserving.
Tonto is Cat DUMBASS!!!
@@1986SSMONTECARLO It took 4 years to reply and you call him an idiot?
Great cat
Rest in peace, Glenda Jackson!
dude, artr carney was one of the greatest comedians of all time...if not for this movie ..he deserved to have his moment ,...dont ya think? and he passed away soon after ...and the other actors nominated went on to win many awards ...things sometimes happen for a reason we do not know at thge time ..i believe he was due for a moiment lik,e thnis & got it ..LOOK HOW HAPPY AND PROUD HE WAS! way to go art@!
I agree you, except that thirty years later is hardly "soon after." :)
he meant that he passed away soon after these awards were given out ...my best friend is his neice.hje was asn amazing man
Renee mason Art Carney didn't pass away soon after? He died in 2003, nearly 30 years after winning this Oscar. He also continued to work steadily until 1993, when he retired at 75.
oh..lol...i didnt rea;lize thAT said 1975..he looked so old! but my best friend is his neice and she told mew he was also very very large when he passed ...he had gained aLOT of weight ..soi i was way off
+Brad Filippone. Great movies, movies, all of them.
I was happy to see Art Carney win an Oscar after all those years after having been Jackie Gleason's sidekick.
His cat TOTO should've won too .. Hehe
Tonto !!!!!
Tonto didn't win an award for being the best animal actor in a movie
My talk text got that all wrong Tonto did win an award
I just watched Harry and Tonto and loved it. Art Carney deserved this award.
@ Max Terra --
You're not wrong!!!
Absolutely, he was amazing in it and he was only 55 when he filmed it
Carney did deserve it. It was a more subdued and subtle performance than the others because that's what the character required. He nailed it!
One of the great mystery of this world: how on Earth did this guy win an oscar over Al Pacino (The Godfather 2)?
Al Pacino as Michael Corleone was the best peformance ever in the history of cinema.
So true , the award had Al pacinos name written all over it
All of the actors were great.
One of the biggest mysteries of the universe is Al Pacino not winning this Oscar!
My guess is Carney winning is a combination of the other nominees splitting the vote and Carney being well-liked among older Academy members.
And considering the Oscar that Al Pacino did win for in Scent of a Woman in 1992 was another of those undeserving Oscar's that too many actors&actresses get when they win an Oscar for the wrong role or performance.
The look on Jack's face says it all. I love Carney, but Chinatown was and still is, a classic.
Brilliant and definitely one of my favorite movies as a child. But every time I see this man, I can't help but think, "Hey...Ralphie boy!"
This was Glenda's sole Oscar Appearance to date.
This was for Pacino. Period.
The show only had 39 episodes, but it remains an iconic symbol of Comedy.
them 4 and those stunningly written 39 are poetry on a whole other plane -- even lucy can't touch it
I think Art Carney got the Oscar because everyone knew he would show up!
Al Pacino should have won :((((
fuck him ! I'm sick of movies that glorify mafia scum !
Kushal Srinivasan Somehow I think you'll live
INTERNETWORK fuck off
You confuse anger with poise.
I will forever love and be greatful for the classic 39 episodes of the honeymooners. Best sitcom ever. You go norton!
All of Godfather 2, Michael Corleone conveys so much in just subtle glances. It’s some of the most thought provoking acting ever put to film. Art Carney is a G, but this Oscar belonged to Al Pacino
Art Carney deserved the Oscar.
Serpico was the performance that Pacino should have won an Oscar. He owned that performance. He was probably in almost every scene and you forgot you were watching Pacino.
Glenda Jackson and Albert Finney were born in the same day (May 9th, 1936).
+Renan C.
Just like Andy Griffith & Marilyn Monroe on June1 of 1926.
Pacino should won that Oscar for Godfather part 2
Art Carney's performance has stood the test of time.
Every time I see it I enjoy it more and more.
Academy delivered a very wise choice here.
lol Glenda Jackson is so quick, she doesn't even lets everybody finish to aplause Al Pacino and rushes out "aaaand the winner is."
Pacino may have deserved it but Art was so special in Harry & Tonto.
For Chinatown? Naw. It was a writer's/director's film. Plot driven
Sky Blylevin Art Carney gave a class performance for Harry and Tonto and he truly deserved the award.
No it wasn't a sentimental "gesture."
Going to watch again.
this was basically a lifetime achievement award and the academy knew he would definitely be at the awards
The Academy fucked up on not giving my boy Al Pacino that Oscar.
He got a legacy Oscar much later. And Al doesn't give a shit about awards or award ceremonies.
INTERNETWORK Wow. You’re entitled to your opinion, but how anyone that can watch the abortion scene in GF2 especially and interpret that as Pacino simply going through the motions is beyond me.
He's your man?
I've always wondered--is he a generous lover?
;)
How exciting, to see Glenda Jackson, and all those very strong other nominees.
